Harry Kane (£12.5m) and Lucas Moura (£7.1m) are certain to feature heavily in Fantasy Premier League transfers ahead of Gameweek 4.

They were the goal-scorers as Spurs were 3-0 winners over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

While Mauricio Pochettino’s men are looking top side in 2018/19, the Red Devils are becoming seriously unappealing Fantasy assets.

In this final Scout Notes article of Gameweek 3, we take a look at the key talking points from Monday Night Football.

MANCHESTER UNITED 0-3 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

Goals: Harry Kane (£12.5m), Lucas Moura x2 (£7.1m)

Assists: Kieran Trippier (£6.0m), Christian Eriksen (£9.5m), Kane

Lucas Moura‘s (£7.1m) brace against Manchester United should make waves in the transfer market ahead of Gameweek 4. The Tottenham man has now found the net three times in 2018/19 and is similarly priced to popular transfer-out target Richarlison (£6.7m), who will miss the next two Gameweeks. Moura was deployed in a very advanced central position at Old Trafford, almost playing off Harry Kane (£12.5m) as a second centre-forward, and in the first-half actually had an average position closer to the United goal than the England captain. With Erik Lamela (£6.5m) picking up a hamstring injury in the warm-up and Son Heung-min (£8.3m) still away on international duty (more on that below), Moura is looking like a sure starter for the time-being. Pochettino certainly heaped the praise on him after the match.

“Many many praise he is going to receive now. But for me I want to say to our chief scout Steve Hitchen and all the people that worked with him, because they advised to sign him. When the people sometimes criticise because always it is tough now, I think I need to say well done, because today’s performance from Lucas Moura, for the people that advised and feel responsible too, they need to be praised too. That is why I want to congratulate them. There are always people who are working behind and it was a fantastic job because today I think Lucas deserves a lot of credit.”

Kane has now registered two goals and an assist in August, but is still a little way off his FPL best. As mentioned, his average position in the first-half was closer to that of his central midfielders than Moura’s and he had just two shots, his lowest match tally of the campaign so far. One of those was from a set piece. His season total of eight so far averages out at 2.67 per game, still well below the 4.97 he averaged in 2017/18. However, if he keeps delivering points, Fantasy managers may very soon require his services once again, especially with trips to Watford, Brighton, Huddersfield and West Ham all coming up between now and Gameweek 9.

However, options such as Christian Eriksen (£9.4m) and Dele Alli (£9.1m) may see their stock fall this week with the success of Kane and Moura. Eriksen touched the ball in United’s box just once and created fewer chances than Trippier. Meanwhile Alli actually had more shots than any of his team-mates, but crucially did not score.

Once again, the Spurs back-line has become an area of rotation risk for Fantasy managers. Ben Davies (£5.9m) only as an 82nd minute substitute after missing out on a line-up for the first time this season. It was Danny Rose (£5.9m) who came back in for his start of the campaign, although was withdrawn with a knock. Kieran Trippier (£6.0m), still one of the top three most popular defenders and still on corners and free-kicks, got his second goal involvement in as many matches, keeping himself in the conversation about premium options in his classification. However, he was also pulled off with a slight knock and replaced by Serge Aurier (£6.0m). Accordingly, on both flanks there is far too much uncertainty for the liking of Fantasy managers.

Hugo Lloris (£5.5m) looks set to continue to keep his place in the Tottenham goal despite being recently arrested for drink driving.

“No, I never considered (dropping him). What happened, I was in contact with him, such a bad experience for him. He feels so sorry. He apologised to everyone, but not only apologised to our fans, us, the club and I think he shows his regret and apologised to the whole country, because that responsibility is massive. I think it was a good lesson for everyone, a massive lesson. He’s punishing himself. He feels so sorry and so bad because he knows that he made a big mistake, but in the same way I think he’s a man out of character. We are going to, of course, support him but knowing that we cannot justify of course. There’s no sense to take some decision like you told me.” – Mauricio Pochettino

Almost all areas of Manchester United’s squad are looking like a no-fly zone in FPL at this point, but the defence more than the attack. David de Gea (£6.0m), the goalkeeper who kept more clean sheets than any other in 2017/18, appears to be more and more of a useless luxury with each passing Gameweek. In three matches he has no clean sheets, has been beaten eight times and ranks 18th for saves made.

His status as the most popular goalkeeper (25 percent ownership) has largely been based on the fact that he was the only route into the United defence. Not that it looks one worth investing in anymore, but that pillar of his Fantasy appeal does still, admittedly, remain.

Eric Bailly (£5.5m), who was one of the chief suspects in the Gameweek 2 defeat at Brighton, was not even on the bench against Spurs and his absence from the match day squad is not believed to have been as a result of injury, given some of the comments below. It was Chris Smalling (£5.8m) and Phil Jones (£5.3m) who started against Spurs but they were used in a three-man defence alongside midfielder Ander Herrera (£5.0m). This was, according to Mourinho, not an enforced decision but a tactical system the team had been planning on using against Spurs.

“We work very well during the week. We prepare the week very well. The players had a fantastic attitude. At half-time the score should be two goals different minimum. (One the back-three with Herrera involved) We work all week. From a strategic point of view we didn’t lose, from the tactical point we didn’t lose but we lost the match.” – Jose Mourinho

Jones was then withdrawn with an injury in the second-half to be replaced by Victor Lindelof (£5.0m), so it’s no surprise that Mourinho gave this answer when asked in his post-match press conference if he knew what his best back-four looked like.

“No. Because in first game, it was Lindelof and Bailly. Today we had Smalling and Jones, and Jones went off with injury. In the next match it will be Smalling and another one. When Rojo is back he is another option too.” – Jose Mourinho

In one of his television interviews he gave this update on Jones.

“I don’t know what Phil Jones has. I didn’t speak to him. We still have Smalling, Lindelof and Eric Bailly.” – Jose Mourinho

The only defender who, at this stage, could prove to be a cheaper alternative to De Gea, if United can start keeping clean sheets again, is Luke Shaw (£5.1m). He was the only survivor from the back-four which was heavily criticised at Brighton and was name-checked by one-time detractor Mourinho as one of the better performers from Monday night’s defeat. It sounds like he may keep his place for Gameweek 4 after he looked a good threat going forward.

“I saw Luke Shaw, with the result 3-0, having fatigue and cramps and still keeping in the game, with that pride and dignity that the fans applaud. So I think a magnificent reaction for the boys. I don’t know if you play any sport, I played at a lower level, but goals are an amazing vitamin and goals conceded are an overdose of fatigue. When you are the best team and at half-time you think ‘why are we not winning’. When you concede two goals, it is an overdose of fatigue.” – Jose Mourinho

Mourinho also rang the changes higher up the pitch, demonstrating that United are a very unsettled side right now. Juan Mata (£6.4m), Anthony Martial (£7.3m) and Andreas Pereira (£4.9m) were all substituted against Brighton, and all three were left out of the squad to face Tottenham. Nemanja Matic (£5.0m) made a return to the starting line-up, as did Jesse Lingard (£6.9m).

In defence of one or two of his controversial press conference comments, Mourinho was correct to assert that his side were aggressive in their attacking play. Only Fulham took more shots on goal in Gameweek 3 than the Red Devils, with no side bettering their 16 efforts in the box. Romelu Lukaku (£11.0m) was the chief threat with all five of his shots in the penalty area, and Jesse Lingard (£6.9m) wasn’t far behind with three in the box out of his total of five. With Burnley, the most generous of the Gameweek 3 defences in allowing 25 shots and conceding four goals, up next for Man United, it may not be all doom and gloom for Lukaku and Lingard at least.

Elsewhere, Son made further progress at the Asian Games, making another step towards avoiding military service. The only way the Tottenham midfielder can avoid being called up to the army is to win a gold medal at the summer tournament and he is now just 90 minutes away from competing in the final. Up next for South Korea in the semi-finals is Vietnam with one of either Japan or United Arab Emirates awaiting in Saturday’s final. Son’s involvement in the last four rules him out of any involvement in the Gameweek 4 trip to Watford and he’ll be touch and go for Gameweek 5 as well. As previously mentioned, this boosts the appeal of Moura for the next few Gameweeks.

MANCHESTER UNITED XI (3-4–2-1): De Gea; Jones (Lindelof 58’), Smalling, Herrera (Sánchez 55’); Shaw, Fred, Matic (Fellaini 61’), Valencia; Lingard, Pogba; Lukaku.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR XI (4-2-3-1): Lloris; Rose (Davies 82’), Vertonghen, Alderweireld, Trippier (Aurier 76’); Dier, Dembele; Moura, Eriksen, Alli; Kane (Winks 89’).

      Hi Joe, can I ask;

Should WE all be jumping on the latest must have bandwagon at any expense to number transfers made in any given week?
Or hold back & assess then use FT, seen people looking at -12 & above surely this is madness?
Can you see an end to this as we are only approaching wk4, previously things seemed more calm?

I think certain things (the KUN hat-trick for example) has made the gulf seem much worse for some folk than it is.
I'm never a big fan of taking huge hits - Id rather either make small changes and ride the rest out - or Wildcard if it is that bad.

I think people are too anti hits - if you get it right not only can you gain more points anyway but you can immediately improve your team!

I did a -8 Kelly, Coleman and Zaha to Bennett, Wilson and Alonso. Gained me 13 points, so 5 more than my hit and I much prefer my team/squad now. Hits aren't bad if you get them right!

          Agreed,

Strike while the iron is hot, if you are right picking up the right player for a hit who has form the points loss is not an issue, plus you gain sv.

If hits go bad i does hurt, a blank from a player you took a hit for is awful.

Took a hit first gw1 to get Mane in as i could see he was better option than Firmino.

          A perfect example.

Give it a few weeks. 4m+ are playing currently, that will be halved and probably halved again by October. Those who pack it in after a months are also the ones more likely to do 3 or 4 transfers a week. Prices always fluctuate before first Int break.

Thoughts on this Salah-less wildcard draft?

        Ryan

        Mane • Hazard • D.Silva • Mkhi
        Aguero • Mitro • Zaha

        (Button / R.Pereira / Awb / Stephens)

A team with Salah would mean:

        Mane, D.Silva, R.Periera & 4.5mid ➡️

Fantasy Football Scout Daily Hot Topic

Salah, Mane, Robertson, and TAA have all performed well so far, as have some other Liverpool assets, and many of us have tripled up for the opening fixtures. This has paid off nicely.

The fixtures now turn a bit until GW8, with lei, tot, SOU, che MCI before a nice run begins.

        What are your Liverpool plans?

Are you thinking of shipping Salah? Why or why not? Is Mané a better option to hold onto, or should those of us with Salah and Mané keep both? What about the defensive options?

GW9 is the beginning of a fixture shift for a few teams and a WC for GW9 could be a good strategy, allowing us to ditch Liverpool players knowing we'll have them back again in a few GWs. Is this a strategy you're looking at? Why or why not?

Previous to last year Klopp had the best record against the top 6. While Spurs and Chelski are tough matches away not fussed about City as its always an open match and Klopp's record vs Pep is the best.

I reckon it's only worthwhile to sell Dmen as Mane and Salah will be just as likely to score as those 3 clubs won't park the bus.

There's not enough value to consider dumping Salah. If Aubameyang, Kane, Hazard, Sterling all of a sudden look amazing then maybe, but the mid price options are the high performers so it doesn't make sense to get rid of Salah right now.

I'd be looking to prioritize the triple-double over the coming weeks.

          Robertson - Salah
          Mendy - Aguero
          Alonso - Hazard

I like the strategy of ditching Pool players now and wildcarding them back in for GW9.

But since I have already wildcarded im definitely contemplating dropping Salah for next 5 but having Mane & TAA/Robertson to cover Pool.

Although to warrant dropping Salah the money has to be spent wisely and you should definitely have a plan to get him back if already used wildcard.

Have been debating this a bit earlier on this article. I think there is still going to be hauls from both Salah and Mane regardless of fixtures at the moment. Currently 1st and 3rd in the Midfield OP view. Salah returning on every GW so far even though he has been considered out of form to a degree. Theres a chance he rises to the occasion - we know Liverpool are strong Vs the top 6 recently so I'm not going to be too quick to shift at present.

I have both of them plus Robbo. He could be a bit of a different case for me. I may downgrade him to TAA or suchlike or bring in someone with better fixtures. For example I could probably squeeze in Mendy or Trippier etc.

I'm not going to be ditching S&M UNLESS I see them looking flat against either Leicester or Spurs

I can't see Robertson > TAA really. If I play a Liverpool defender in the hard games I'm going to want attacking threat, and I think Robertson will continue to be a better option.

But Trippier is tempting me if I think he'll start.

Salah's lack of bonus makes captaining him less appealing

I think though TAA does offer a threat - he gets forward although doesnt have the crossing that Robbo does.
He does get some Set Piece action but I think the 1M saving could make up for the difference.
I have to say a trippier could be more appealing.

Definitely an options and a threat, I just mean that if I'm playing a Liverpool defender in a hard game I want it to be the best possible option.

If I think a CS is possible I'd be more likely to go with TAA

Might be tempted to lose TAA despite the much improved Liverpool defence in the last six months.

I think although the Brighton was a modest performance, I genuinely believe people like Salah are fixture proof in the biggest of games.

Fixture proof, I agree.. but I won't captain him and he doesn't seem to get bonus. Kane or Hazard for a few weeks until the fixtures clear? Or do you think the other options aren't going to match?

Tot poses a bit of a problem, but both Chelsea and Man City have been vulnerable at the back to big sides. I don’t see a reason to get rid of at this point.

To be honest I wouldn't be surprised at 3/5 clean sheets coming up for Liverpool, which is enough for me to keep Robbo until the fixtures turn, and Salah can score anywhere really plus he's good for captaincy rotation with Aguero.

              IMO they should be kept:
Liverpool’s results against other Top 6 sides in 2017/18:
              Arsenal : 4-0, 3-3
              Chelsea : 1-1, 1-0
              City : 5-0, 4-3
              United : 0-0, 2-1
              Spurs : 4-1, 2-2

Chelsea (Under Conte) and United play a very organised, structured brand of football meaning the games were much tighter and Liverpool didn't have the space. However Liverpool don't play United until GW17 and Chelsea go into the group below due to their high press and possession football under Sarri. Therefore there is no point analysing these teams results.

*Liverpool played with 10 men in the 5-0 thrashing by City which massively affected the game so i'll ignore that below.

Arsenal, City and Spurs all play open, expansive football which favoured Liverpool's attack. They scored 14 goals in 5 games against them (2.8 goals per game). They also conceded 12 (2.4 per game). This shows they should score plenty but concede plenty. However Liverpool have massively improved their defense since these fixtures with the arrivals of Alisson and VVD aswell as the development of Arnold, Gomez and Robertson.

Liverpool's attack all relies on exploiting space in behind or in the midfield and they are given this space against teams that press high which Spurs, City and Chelsea do. When Spurs and City press they leave space in behind for Salah and Mane to exploit. When Chelsea press they leave space in the midfield for Firmino and Keita to exploit and create overloads in the attack. This means they score much more goals as reflected above.

Conclusion - In 2017/18 Liverpool scored 2.2 goals per game but averaged 2.8 against the teams above. This is a massive increase and is why I wouldn't be thinking about selling Pool attacking assets but actually getting in another one! As for the defense although it's improved I wouldn't expect any CS pts. Robertson and Arnold could very likely pick up attacking pts but I wouldn't count on it. There is also a chance of CL rotation after GW5 but I wouldn't expect Klopp to rotate against these teams. This is another plus as other teams such as Chelsea/City will rotate with CL while Klopp can’t really do that under the circumstances!

                Great post, interesting.

I agree that they'll still be good picks I'm just not sure they're the best picks. Hazard's fixtures, for example, push me that way over a second Liverpool mid. I'll keep one of Salah and Mané, but I'm not sure which. I'll also keep both this GW probably so we'll see what happens

I’m planning on fitting Salah, Mane and Hazard together. All three are super options and it’s affordable without going defense-heavy which I think is worth it. For ME 2 Pool attackers is essential for the upcoming fixtures (Non-Biased)

Can only afford one of the Spurs mids for Mane for not worth it.

City, Chelsea and Spurs all have some very favourable fixtures in that difficult period for Liverpool. A double-up of Salah and Mane is therefore too much for me as Hazard/Silva/Alli could score some great points. I think I'll drop Salah instead of Mane ( what seems to be the popular choice) due to the 3.5m price difference and I'm not convinced Salah is worth the extra 3.5 in the coming weeks.

With that in mind, losing Salah for GW7 and 8 and getting in Kane for hud, CAR and captaining him v Cardiff while city and pool face off looks a good way of getting the weeks best captain from GW4-GW8 to me. (Aguero v new, Aguero v ful, Salah v sot, Aguero v bri, Kane v car, all at home).

Please somebody talk me out of this -8p trade.
Season has started nicely, current OR ~6,5k, but I'm having issues: Dunk and Richairlison.
I really would like to have Alonso in for Dunk. Alonso is fixture proof, solid FPL trackrecord etc. But he's so damn expensive.

            Here's what I'm thinking for -8p:
            Ederson -> Hennessy
            Dunk -> Alonso
            Richairlison -> Walcott

Need to find cash from somewhere to allow the Dunk -> Alonso trade. Don't want to lose either Mendy or Robertson so I need to look elsewhere.

            Current team is:
            Mendy, Robertson, Kabasele, Dunk, Wan-Bissaka
            Salah, Mane, Moura, Richairlison, Romeu
            Aguero, Ings, Arnautovic

I’d just switch out Richarlison. Dunk coming back and not worth a -8 for a defender in my view.

Yeah I hear you, I don't like taking hits for defenders. But the thing is that with the points hauls Alonso is getting he's virtually an offensive player. Therefore the hit would be justified in my opinion.

I apparently forgot to mention my keepers which are Ederson and Hamer currently.
So this trade would leave me with a duo of Hennessy and Hamer.

Ederson to Hennessy is a downgrade though so that makes the hit worse. Alonso has looked great but you can’t have everyone, your team though so go for it if you like the idea 🙂

Yup, the keepers I'll be stuck with are probably the most negative thing about this trade (along with the point hits :)).

Usually I’m not one for a -8, but I do like those moves.
Not a fan of Ederson and I think your team looks much better going forward.
You could consider keeping Rich and just do the -4, but I think the -8 will pay off over the next 2 weeks.
FYI, Rich may fall tonight, so make a decision before.

The fixtures Richairlison will be missing are very tasty, therefore I think I need to get rid of him. Didn't know about him dropping, already missed Walcotts rise!

            B.Silva to Walcott/Mkhitaryan worth a FT?

It could be but if not sure you're probably better over rolling the transfer and having more flexibility next week.

Yeh it’s whether he gets dropped or not, my bench has Pereira, Dunk and Romeo so not brilliant. 2FT for the after the break would be quite good as well as you say though.

Just do Walcott to Pedro (although I prefer Walcott).
Bsilva out for a hit before New at home can end up bad.

I have 2FT sorry, going to do Pedro in for Rich and then it’s whether saving the other or Walcott in for B.Silva, or even Mkhitaryan.

Have learnt a lot from the last two seasons and humbled myself. Took that experience and have opened up with two back to century scores and a decent gw3 score. What is your overall rank and end of season target?

            Overall rank 2k.
End of season target top 100.

Targeting a top 100 finish is extremely ambitious even after a strong start. I'd be looking for top 10k, maybe top 1k. A top 100 finish has a lot to do with luck and I say that having done it and finished consistently in the top 10k back when I was playing seriously.

Good luck getting into top 100, you need luck and lots of it. I finished 37th about 10 years ago and that was because Bellamy and Viduka went nuts week after week and I got so lucky. Target for me is always top 10k. Anything better is out of your hands imo.

Shocking week this week. But didn't look good for many so not panicking just yet. Just did a -4 Richarlson+Morata for Hazard+Ings to have the following team for this weekend.

              Fabianksi
              Mendy, TAA, Luiz, Bissaka
              Salah, Mane, Hazard(C), Mkhi
              Aguero, Inga

              Foster, Boly, Hughes, Madine.
