The Captain Poll is now open for votes ahead of Gameweek 4 and you can watch our video on the best candidates for the armband below or on our YouTube channel.

The early favourite is Sergio Aguero (£11.2m) who faces an appealing home match-up against Newcastle, a side he is very fond of.

The Manchester City striker has scored 11 goals in his last five home meetings with the Magpies and has already netted a hat-trick in front of his own supporters this season.

With the champions set for the most attractive fixture of the week, options such as Benjamin Mendy (£6.3m) will get consideration as well as David Silva (£8.5m) and Raheem Sterling (£11.0m) if he can hold on to his place.

Also with an appealing match-up is Chelsea, who host the porous Bournemouth defence in Gameweek 4. The Cherries have only allowed two big chances so far in 2018/19, although that does include facing a goal shy Cardiff and they have still conceded three goals in as many matches.

Eden Hazard (£10.6m) is obviously the standout candidate with two assists and goal from just one start and two subsitute appearances in the first three Gameweeks of the season.

However, Pedro (£6.6m) is also an option for those unable to shoehorn the Belgian international into their sides.

As ever, Marcos Alonso (£6.7m) will form part of the conversation now that he has registered a minimum of 11 points in every match so far and has had more shots on goal than any other defender.

Of course Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) has to still be in the conversation as he’s joint-top for shots amongst all players and has created more chances than anyone else.

I like the way they try to hide the obvious favourite halfway down the voting list

So the other day with the community questions one of the answers talked about ignoring ownership completely - and whilst I read that at the time and agreed, I can't help but allow it to factor in to my captain decision this weekend.

Hazard and Aguero are both good picks and I would find it hard to predict who will outscore the other. In cases like that, I think using ownership as the deciding factor is more than reasonable; ie. I should go Kun, because it would hurt my rank much more if he does well and I don't C him. Having Hazard in my team is differential enough given he's not that well owned.

I had the same thoughts last week 2 - I really wanted to C Mitrovic but not going Salah just felt a bit stupid in case I was wrong, and my Mitrovic differential still helped my rank a ton anyway.

If it’s really close and you can’t split them then I guess it’s a good way of making a choice. Not sure how close your Mitro / Salah dilemma was in reality though 🙂

haha yeah truthfully it was always going to be Salah - I did have Mitrovic as VC though ahead of other good options that week so I did have decent faith in him 😛

    2. MTPockets
      7 years, 10 months ago

Obviously debateable, but ignoring ownership and captainship assumes being right in the minority and that the majority is wrong. Can happen but working from assumption of knowledge that everyone else has missed seems an unlikely route to consistent success.

Surely Salah vs. Mitrovic captain was not an ownership dilemma -- Salah was more likely to score more points.

Depends what are your goals in FPL...always go for the player you think will do good - it’s a learning curve and no one can tell which one will do better. Have Mitro in my team as well but would never consider captaining him ove likes of Salah or Aguero...of course he can outscore them on the occasion but in general - I wouldn’t even consider...it’s like people captaining defender over forward...it’s “wild” move that usually doesn’t happen - but exception justify the rule 🙂

Captaining a defender is hardly a 'wild move' I think FFS has just preconditioned users that it is wild.
It is far from it particularly with marauding wing backs/full backs or centre backs that give a goal threat in a good defence or against poor opponents.

I have gone hazard over aguero:

      1) Midfielder gets more points for a goal
      2) Newcastle will defend like mad leading to a tighter game - sitting deep
      3) Bournemouth don't know how to defend

I get where your coming from. Can’t say ownership ever enters my head in terms of selection or captaincy.

I go with who I think will score better. Aguero v Hazard is a bit of a closer call and can’t say I would have had a decision to make between Salah v Mitro barring hindsight.

If you get wrapped to much in terms of ownership, you will miss opportunities. Timing is key to differentials, selections and captains

    This is my gw4 team

    Kepa
    VVD, Trippier, Mendy, Luiz, WB
    Salah, Hazard
    Mitrovic, Aguero(c), King

    Bench: Stekelenburg, Neves, Fraser, Masuaku

Planning ahead; VVD and Luiz to TAA and Alonso next week. Then saving free transfer in gw6 and then getting Kane in for Mitro/King for games against Hud and Car by downgrading Salah for Richarlison who gets back and plays Fulham and Leicester while Mo has Chelsea away and City at home. After those two weeks I switch it back to the state before. What do you think abou that? Could be maverick but could also backfire...

    Updates

    1. Niemi let me know last week that he hasn't had the time online and onsite that he thought he would, as other things are taking up more time than he expected. He is stepping down as a mod, at least for now, but is welcome back on if he wants to be reinstated - thanks Niemi!

    2. Before hearing this, we had 'Rotation's Alter Ego' lined up as a new member of the team as a Content Curation Moderator. Among other things, Rotation's Alter Ego did a great job helping us redirect users to the pre-season RMT articles. Rotation's Alter Ego will be on board as another set of eyes on the boards to watch out for comments that deserve to be highlighted, either with Hot Topics or Stickies. His appointment is less to address moderation needs than our desire for more 'content curation', helping highlight the important topics. Welcome Rotation's Alter Ego!

    3. And finally, I'll be looking to expand the Hot Topics widget to more than 10 Hot Topics. The Hot Topics are supposed to be the pressing questions of the week yet, right now, after a day they sometimes slide out of the widget. A Hot Topic about Richarlison replacements, for example, shouldn't disappear after only 24 hours. (A reminder that users can use the flag button under a comment to flag content they think deserves to be a Hot Topic.)

Additionally, I am looking into having the Hot Topic widget sorted by rating instead of by date. This should allow users to see the most talked about and most upvoted Hot Topics more easily, which is beneficial as these conversations are likely the ones that are most relevant. Some Hot Topics, like the weekly Hot Topic requesting users to submit applications for the weekly Community Champion, don't need to be as visible as, for example, a Hot Topic aobut good Richarlison replacements.

I’ll provide updates on this as it becomes possible 🙂

Would prefer Hot Topics to stay date sorted, unless it's e.g. by ratings of hot topics in past 3 days.

        Sorry, should have been clearer.

It wouldn't be all time Hot Topics and there will still be a limit (15 or 20) to the HTs in the widget. When a new one appears the oldest one will leave the widget, regardless of rating.

The set will still be controlled by date but the order of the set will be displayed by rating

Isn't sorting Hot Topics by rating only useful if you only come on the site every few days? I tend to come on every day and head straight to the HT widget to see the latest ones posted. Sorting by rating will mean they're all jumbled.

I think I agree. Won't the newest and unranked HTs start at the bottom of the list of 15 or 20. Meaning we'll have to scroll to the end to see what's newest? A filter by rank option or a visible rank next to the HT could be useful, however I like the current chronological approach, otherwise am liable to miss low ranked HTs.

Good point. The newest Hot Topic will be the lowest rated which will automatically put it at the bottom of the list. But surely you want the one just posted to be at the top?

I'll play around and see what I can figure out. I take those points and I'll put it on hold.

The worry for me is that people don't comment on Hot Topics lower in the list as often, for whatever reason, even though they are often very new.

I'll expand the list first and give it a think

Exactly. It should be sorted by date but the one with lowest rating leaves to make room for new ones.

Fabianski? I mean he's scoring points every game despite how bad defensively they are - sure they will get some CS at some point against the weaker teams too. Then again pre WC might be better to get Hennessey just bc of fixtures

    The wc-team looks very tasty.

Patricio (or other 4.5) - Hamer

I mean there's no point switching to a 4.5 unless you can use that money elsewhere... and can't really see where with that team... maybe 1m extra for Ederson but that's it.

What I did was to have Fraser and Ings to rotate the last attacking spot and also to ensure I have a playing bench which is important during winter months. That extra cash could be used go upgrade Benette or GK. Flexibility is most impt I guess.

Tony Coppen, the new world #1, has already used three of his chips (Bench Boost, Wildcard and Free Hit).
I wouldn't be surprised if he plays his Triple Captain chip in GW4.

His chips have turned out pretty well for him in the short term, possibly better than some of ours who are keeping them for the double game weeks at the end of the season.
But how long can he hold on to the #1 position, and where is he likely to finish at the end of the season?
    Was it worth it?

Anyone else tempted to play all their chips in the first few game-weeks in the hope of becoming world #1 for a short time?

Double Game Weeks usually occur towards the end of the season, when matches are played that have had to be rearranged because of clashes with the League Cup Final and FA Cup quarter-finals and semi-finals. They can also occur because of matches that have to be rearranged for miscellaneous other reasons such as the weather.

Last season there were 3 double game-weeks - GW22 (a Spurs match that had bee postponed because of New Years Eve traffic problems), GW34 (when there were 4 additional matches) and GW37 (when there were 6 additional matches).

This season GW35 will almost certainly be a double game week, and there will probably be others.

Teams that reach the quarter-finals or semi-finals of the FA Cup are likely to be involved in one or more double game weeks, and so will the teams that they would have played on the FA Cup quarter-final and semi-final dates.

If many of the big six reach the later stages of the Cup, then many of the leading players may play twice in these double game-weeks.

There will also be short game-weeks that clash with the FA Cup quarter-finals and semi-finals, and some players from the big six may have no matches in these, so one of these may be the ideal time to play the Free Hit chip.

Just BB for me in GW1 because thats the most painful chip to plan for and considering my TV is unlikely to go above 102.5, my bench will always be poor.

TC in normal GW can work but DGW has comparatively higher potential, so better to keep it imo.

Free hit was very useful to navigate BGW last year, better to keep for that period I think.

Obviously the players that have used their chips (BB, TC) were doing it to try and either get top overall for a few weeks and try and stay there, or trying to win monthly prizes.

The crazy thing is that they continue to use chips like free hit and wildcards when they don't need to. Using BB and TC in GW1 and GW2 will probably almost not be bettered in DGWs (if you got 25+ and 20) from my (outdated now) experience.

Once they got those crazy double 100+ game weeks they should have started playing seriously. If they had dropped down to 100-200 overall and not used any chips they would be serious contenders as those who have surpassed them probably did it using wildcards or free hits. Guess the lure of being at the top makes people do silly things.

No. The world number 1 at this stage is always got to have quite a lot of luck, played a couple of chips etc simply because of the small sample size. It's not like we're talking about the other managers ranked way lower whose strategy failed.

      Outliers vs averages 🙂

The guy at the top has played BB, WC & FH in that order.
        #2 has played 2 chips
So #3 is the 1st who has played no chips. Roxrite_89
Id consider him the pack leader just now.

I'm never tempted to spunk all my chips at the start. It falsifies the position you get after doing so and you end up getting your lead (if you have one) chipped away over the coming weeks and months.
I'd rather be strategic than try throw it out there rather recklessly.

Well done. Hope you keep going. If you look thru the teams, you'll be in the 10-15% in the top 250 that haven't used a chip. So in good shape.
Here I am out in 23K and happy as Larry too haha

Thanks. I hope I don't mess it up later like I usually do!

I played Bench Boost in GW 1 because I found it added constraints and hindered flexibility around DGW season, which cost me points in other areas. Give it's a bit of an overrated chip anyway, there was relatively little risk involved in doing so.

The other chips are better geared for that time of year though.

it happens every year, the top 10,000 quickly changes as the season develops - the cream rises to the top in the end

Next season will be interesting as with the winter break is expected to last approximately two weeks. According to Goal.com the break will be staggered over two weekends. Ten teams will be playing the first weekend and the other 10 teams will be playing the following weekend, hence allowing all clubs to have a two-week break from football.

Definitely see a mix of planned transfers and free hit will be required get the maximum amount of points. Can see this being a season deciding period separating more dedicated managers from the rest. Unless we get a new 'Winter Chip' of course.

Does this mean there will be an extra gameweek? If it counts as one then it will just be a 10 day gameweek with all teams playing one game

There's a good argument for playing BB in GW1 and using the WC early (not that I've done either) but the FH and TC are best saved imo.

What a nutter. Hard to see why he is being taken seriously on here.

I doubt if anyone here is taking him very seriously.
None of us expect him to be challenging for the top place at the end of the season.

But it is interesting to speculate whether others might also be tempted to jeopardise their final ranking in exchange for their 10080 minutes of fame, as Mysterion puts it.

Problem is that were not really in any position to call him out for being wrong. Although his tactics at the very least can be called questionable , the results have been outstanding.

The way it looks, hes made approximately 25 pts from his free hit, 23 pt from his bb. His wilcard should not be assessed for a couple of weeks, but he made atleast 15pts in gw2 as a direct consequence from the changes he made.

At least the BB and the FH should be viewed as well spent. Although he will loose ground when others cash in those chips, theres reason to believe that he has done better than what the average will do with those chips. Points in gw1-3 are just as valuable as pts in gw36-38.

I wouldn't criticise his early Bench Boost and Wildcard - other more experienced players have done the same - but he was very lucky with how well his Free Hit in GW3 turned out. The odds at the start of GW3 must have been strongly against it being as effective then as in a Blank Game Week later in the season.

If his main object after reaching world #2 after GW2 was to be world #1 after GW3 though, then for him using another chip in GW3 was the right thing to do.

he may not be the best example, but quite a few started the season with bench boost and then went on to triple cap aguero with great success. (multiple cases of 50+ points for 2 chips) After last seasons BB and many TC failures during the DGW, maybe its an approach worth considering? It would be interesting if a manager who knows what they r doing rather than someone who may stop playing after a few months took this approach.
