The international break has given us the chance to analyse our recently updated Live Hall of Fame – and analyse the strategies of those managers who feature in the top ten.

This ranking system is applied to everyone who takes part in either of our Fantasy Premier League mini-leagues (free or members), with managers’ performances over the seasons then tracked to give a Hall of Fame (HoF) rating.

The live version has been updated to take into account Gameweek 4’s results and can be viewed by Members via this link.

Further information on the FFS Hall of Hame is included at the bottom of this article, but alternatively, you can view this movie to listen to our very own Mark and Rate My Team’s Chris Atkinson discuss the feature.

The career version, which shows the standings at the end of last season, is free to view here or via the HoF tab on the home page.

The Updated Top Ten

Not only do we have four new entrants in the top ten from the standings listed at the end of 2017/18, but we also have a new leader.

Grant Barclay is our new number one, deposing Career Hall of Fame front-runner Jay Egersdorff from top spot.

Grant has three top 1,000 finishes and a further seven inside the top 10k, with his best overall rank being 105 in 2016/17.

Jay falls to third, with his current overall rank of 691,177 costing him first place.

Like Grant, Jay has three top 1,000 finishes to his name, with two just outside the top 100 in 2009/10 and 2016/17.

Matthew Jones sits comfortably inside the top 50k after Gameweek 4 and rises to second place as a result. There is a common theme developing with our podium places: Matthew has three top 1,000 finishes in nine seasons as an FPL manager.

Marlen Rattiner is a non-mover at four, after a solid start to 2018/19: Marlen can boast four overall ranks inside the top 1k, with his best “OR” being 194 in 2014/15.

Richard Clarke and Owen Walker are the other two FPL managers to remain in our Live HoF top ten from the Career table compiled at the end of 2017/18, sitting in fifth and ninth place respectively.

Owen is a relative newcomer to the game, but has an impressive three top 1k finishes in just six seasons of competing.

Richard, meanwhile, is a high-performing veteran of some 12 years, with two top 1,000 finishes to his name during that period.

The four entries into the top ten have, of course, had excellent starts to this campaign.

Kenneth Tang, The Magician (aka TorresMagic) and Bruce Savage all sit in the top 20,000 after Gameweek 4.

Kenneth has an enviable five top 1,000 finishes in 12 years of recorded data, while price rise king TorresMagic has six overall ranks inside the top 3,000 in ten seasons – two of them inside the top 1k.

Bruce meanwhile can boast the best finish of any of our top ten: 54th place in 2009/10.

Paul Godson has had the best start to this season of any of the above managers, currently sitting in 4,361st place overall. Paul, like so many of his fellow elite managers, also has three top 1k ranks to his name.

The legends that are Paul Gee (last year’s runner-up) and Ville Ronka slip out of our top ten despite fair starts to this season, while the 2018/19 ranks of Lester Cheng and a certain Mark Sutherns – both currently sitting outside the top one million – have also come at the expense of their places in the top ten.

A special mention to Stephen Harrap, in 20th place in our Live HoF, who currently sits in 255th place in the world.

Top Ten – Strategies and Teams in 2018/19

Two of our Live HoF top ten have played their Wildcards already: Owen in Gameweek 3 and Jay in Gameweek 4. The rest, including all of the above managers currently sitting in the top 100k, have held their Wildcards back – though there remains the possibility of this chip being used during the international break.

At the time of writing, none of our top ten has made a transfer for Gameweek 5 – though any Wildcard deployment would, of course, be hidden from view.

Unsurprisingly, no other chips have been used by the ten managers in question.

Marlen and The Magician (headlining the John Peel Stage next year) are the only two of the aforementioned managers to take a transfer hit this season, meanwhile.

All ten of our managers captained Sergio Aguero (£11.3m) in Gameweek 4, while all bar Jay and Grant own both Sadio Mane (£10.0m) and Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) – the Senegalese midfielder is  missing from their 15-man squads, with Jay selling him on his Gameweek 4 Wildcard.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.1m), Benjamin Mendy (£6.4m) and Andrew Robertson (£6.1m) feature in all ten of these squads, though Marcos Alonso (£6.8m) has surprisingly been overlooked by five of our elite FPL managers.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan‘s (£7.2m) “one-pointer” at Cardiff was bad news for seven of our featured Fantasy bosses, while six were affected by Wilfried Zaha‘s (£7.0m) non-appearance at Selhurst Park last Saturday.

Half of our managers made the Richarlison (£6.6m) to Theo Walcott (£6.8m) transfer for Gameweek 4, though Owen and Kenneth are sitting on Everton’s Brazilian midfielder for the time being.

Bruce and Marlen – both of whom own David de Gea (£5.9m) – are the only two managers who have opted for a premium goalkeeper this season.

The maverick picks are few and far between, though Grant does own David Luiz (£5.5m) and Alexandre Lacazette (£9.4m) – both of whom excelled for him in Gameweek 4.

Further analysis of our Live HoF’s teams and strategies will follow during the season.

Hall of Fame FAQ

How is my rating calculated?
The “HoF Rating” is based on your points scores from previous FPL seasons, with the latest season weighted the heaviest and each corresponding season weighted at roughly 80% that of the previous season. So, in other words, those who performed best in 2017/18 will receive a bigger HoF Rating boost from those who did best in 2007/08. The “HoF Ranking” even allows for those with missing years, adapting the formula accordingly to allow to rank alongside the veterans of the FPL.

How do I join the Hall of Fame
Simply sign up to our leagues next season, either the Fantasy Football Scout Classic League or if you’re a member, the Members Classic League – the code is available on the dashboard of the Members Area.

How do I find myself in the Hall of Fame?
The search box at the top of the ranking tables allows you to search by surname or by FPL id.

What if I don’t want to be listed?
Either notify us via support@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk or simply leave the Fantasy Football Scout league and you’ll be removed on the next update.

When does the Hall of Fame get updated?
The Career table is available to all and is updated at the end of each season to display the latest rankings. The Live version of the Hall of Fame is updated throughout the season to reflect the scores of the current campaign.

    Would you WC this?

    Fab (Foster)
    Alonso Mendy Robbo *Shaw (AWB)
    Salah Mane Mkhi *Walcott (*Cairney)
    Kun *Zaha (Kamara)
    1 FT 0 ITB

I can get this team instead:
    Patricio (Fab)
    Alonso Mendy Perreira (AWB Bennett)
    Hazard Mane Moura Maddison (Fraser)
    Kun Laca Ings

    1. Bruce Lee
      8 years, 1 month ago

Nope. Wait on Zaha and Shaw news. Then a potential hit to sort out Wally + Shaw/Zaha

No need to think about taking Mkhi out. He is probably nailed for upcoming games

        Thanks mate
        Sounds reasonable
Its just that every day I wait, another one of my players gets injured..

  2. Bruce Lee

Mkhi to anyone seems like a downgrade when looking at the stats.

Salah to anyone is the exact same (apart from Hazard probably).

A few weeks ago I thought how boring it would be with everyone having the same team, bit bandwagons like that make me laugh and create separation.

    1. diesel001
      8 years, 1 month ago

Are you sure Mkhi will play?

Rumours (and just that - nothing official) that Ozil is playing due to his wages and to protect his sale value as the Board don't want to lose lots of money on him.

      1. Bruce Lee
        8 years, 1 month ago

Even if that's the case, Ozil can play as a number 10 and Mkhi on the right

    2. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
      8 years, 1 month ago

I still have high hopes for Mkhi. But if he’s benched v Newcastle & owners have 2 FT’s, the firesale will start, rightly or wrongly.

      1. Bruce Lee
        8 years, 1 month ago

I'd definitely consider too, but I can't see why he wouldn't start. He is one of their best players

I think Cardiff are a rugby team and he was almost protected from that game

      Can you see him starting?
      Who will be benched?

It’s a bit like the relationship between oil and petrol.

Oil prices rise, petrol prices rise. Oil prices fall, petrol prices rise.

Jesus misses out for Brazil, Kun benched speculation. Jesus plays for Brazil, Kun benched speculation.

He does look quite chunky for a professional athlete. It's not so much a problem for an attacking battering ram like Deeney, but it's not great for a left back who is supposed to fly up and down on the flank.

Guys, I know it will cause all manner of benching issues, but what do you reckon about this wildcard draft?

    Schmiechel, Hamer
    Mendy, Alonso, Robertson, Wan-Bisssaka, Bennett,
    Hazard, Fraser, Neves, Mane, Seri,
    Aguero, Lukaku, Ings

I could also do Begovic in for Schmiechel and Ward in for Seri allowing Kane in for Lukaku.

    1. the axolotl

I'm starting to think benching head aches may become a more familiar scenario for me this season, as painful as points on the bench are, personally I'd rather have a bench that is capable of getting some returns should a player in my starting 11 get rotated. I've avoided 'fodder' so far. Nice team.

Cheers guys - all good advice. Doherty really does look good value.

i think that we are in a bit of an odd position this year, with genuinely interesting options at around 5.0 -5.5 ish in midfield and two pretty nailed 4.0 defenders.

My pick for the interesting 4.5 mid would be Ward. I still think he can take a regular starting spot and might even be OOP.

Not sure how useful this is, but I thought it would be interesting to look at the average BPS needed last season to get bonus points in any given match, as well as some other stats relating to BPS and bonus points.

Average BPS needed per bonus point level:
    3 BP: 40 BPS
    2 BP: 32 BPS
    1 BP: 28 BPS
    0 BP: 11 BPS

Highest BPS score recorded for each BP:
    3 BP: 102 BPS | Aguero vs Leicester (H) in GW 27 | 4 goals
    2 BP: 64 BPS | Coutinho vs Brighton (A) in GW 15 | 1 goal, 3 assists
    1 BP: 49 BPS | Lamela vs Leicester (H) in GW 38 | 2 goals, 1 assist
    0 BP: 44 BPS | Mahrez vs Spurs (A) in GW 38 | 1 goal, 2 assists

Lowest BPS score recorded for each BP:
    =3 BP: 20 BPS | Eriksen vs Watford (A) in GW 15 | 1 assist
=3 BP: 20 BPS | Dembele vs Watford (A) in GW 15 | no other returns
    2 BP: 20 BPS | Shaqiri vs Leicester (A) in GW 28 | 1 goal
    =1 BP: 18 BPS | Kabasele vs Spurs (H) in GW 15 | 1 goal, 1 yellow card
=1 BP: 18 BPS | Fuchs vs Bournemouth (H) in GW 29 | no other returns
    0 BP: -15 BPS | Benteke vs Liverpool (A) in GW 2 | 1 yellow card

Fastest to achieve each BP level in terms of minutes played:
    3 BP: 4 minutes played | Andy Carroll vs Stoke (H) in GW 34 | 1 goal
    2 BP: 8 minutes played | Locadia vs Swansea (H) in GW 28 | 1 goal
    1 BP: 10 minutes played | Martial vs West Ham (H) in GW 1 | 1 goal, 1 assist

Most points scored in a match without receiving any bonus points:
=13 points: Sterling vs Crystal Palace (H) in GW 6 | 2 goals, clean sheet
    =13 points: Mahrez vs Spurs (A) in GW 38 | 1 goal, 2 assists

Least points scored in a match despite being on bonus points:
=3 BP: 5 points | Gross vs Man Utd (A) in GW 13 | no other returns
=3 BP: 5 points | Dembele vs Watford (A) in GW 15 | no other returns
=3 BP: 5 points | Trippier vs West Brom (H) in GW 13 | no other returns
    2 BP: 3 points | Bellerin vs Man Utd (A) in GW 36 | 2 goals conceded
    =1 BP: 2 points | Duffy vs West Brom (A) in GW 23 | 2 goals conceded
=1 BP: 2 points | Diame vs Bournemouth (A) in GW 28 | 2 goals conceded, yellow card

    Least owners per BP level:
3 BP: 0 owners | Niasse vs Bournemouth (H) in GW 6 | 2 goals scored, yellow card
2 BP: 0 owners | Gazzaniga vs Crystal Palace (H) in GW 11 | clean sheet, 3 saves
1 BP: 1137 owners | Hoedt vs Crystal Palace (A) in GW 5 | clean sheet

Number of times each BP level was obtained:
    3 BP: 413 times
    2 BP: 386 times
    1 BP: 413 times
0 BP: 9240 times (at least 1 minute played)

I'll make a similar post a couple GWs from now using this season's data. Also, Aguero occupied the 3 highest BPS scores, and Benteke the 2 lowest BPS scores.

      Cheers Stats. Is this right?

The average bps points needed to get 3 baps is equal to the average bps points that scored the player 2 baps, right? In other words, if you score the same as second place, tou have done enough to get 3 baps.

40 seems very high, but I could just be misguided.

      1. Deulofail
        8 years, 1 month ago

And you don't have to score any bps points to get 0 baps. Perhaps the wording is off?

      2. stat
        8 years, 1 month ago

On average, players who got 3 BP in a match picked up 40 BPS. Players who got 2 BP in a match picked up 32 BPS on average.
I'm not sure what you're asking exactly.

And yeah, you don't have to score any BPS to get 0 BP but I decided to include it to see how many BPS players who don't get any bonus points get on average.

        1. Deulofail
          8 years, 1 month ago

You say these numbers are the bps points needed to achieve 3 baps, 2 baps, 1 bap. But actually I think it's like this:

          3 BP: 32 BPS
          2 BP: 28 BPS
          1 BP: ? BPS

Which is different from the average bps points that players with 3 baps got, vs 2 vs 1 vs 0. The player who got 40 bps points didn't need 40 to get 3 baps. They needed the same as the player who came second in the bps, aka 32. In which case, both would get 3 baps.

Although it doesn't really work with the mean, but perhaps you get the idea.

          1. stat
            8 years, 1 month ago

Oh yeah I see what you're saying. They only needed 1 more BPS than the player who came in 2nd - that's a good point.

Really disheartening that I waited until gameweek 4 to get Alonso.

Just been re-reading the preseason articles and he was written off under the new manager. Why did I listen?!

Missed out on 3 gameweeks of big points hauls. It's like those people who moved late on Mahrez/Vardy and Kane/Alli 3 or 4 seasons ago.

I think the reasons stated to expect less from Alonso were valid. But there was a misunderstanding of Sarri and how his tactics allow for a player like Alonso to flourish. I'm gutted I fell for it too, even after the first 2 I assumed it wasn't going to last. Then I actually properly watched how Alonso plays in the system

Mane currently has a 40% goal conversion rate.

The best last season was Vardy at 28% which is exceptional.

    Mane will regress.

Not many people can be called an FPL Expert. I may be one of the few fantasy managers who justify this label.

Ask me anything and I will give you an answer you won't hear on any pod or stream.

This is why people are crying out for me to be on the scoutcast. Only one man can save it. Yes the viewing figures are up year-on-year but given how many millions play the FPL now the views should be comfortably into the six-figures by now.

People are complaining that the scoutcast is "too nice" and "everyone agrees with each other". Get me on there to (respectfully and politely) shake things up.

Start your own podcast as an audition. If it's any good, people will tell you vs imaginary ones.

Wow. These so called ‘experts’ certainly aren’t self proclaimed unlike yourself. You’ll never be in the elitest category

As long as the net worth of FFS is in 6 figures that’s all that matters 😉

Hold Bellerin through his good fixtures?

You're holding Bellerin purely for his attacking returns. Clean sheets are going to be a very rare occurrence for Arsenal. "Don't sell, don't buy" for me.

Cheers. Got an eye on Trippier (with AWB/Bennett as cover). Will see how next few go.

If Trippier is nailed - and as a goalscoring semi finalist in the World Cup - I suspect he may be, he will be in the top 3 scoring defenders of the season.

      Oh just stop it.

You've heard other people already saying that about Mane's stats. Jay definitely has. How can you try to pass it off as your own?

It's exactly what he does, there's nothing remotely original in anything he posts on here.

    Team...
    Pickford
    TAA, AWB, Mendy, Alonso
    Fraser, Salah, Haz, Lucas
    Jimenez, Aguero
    Speroni, Zaha, Kabasele, Odoi

Worth getting rid of Odoi incase of price change or wait?
