The Scout Squad crew return to offer their long-list of candidates to be considered for our regular Scout Picks selection on Friday.

The 72 nominations will be narrowed down to a squad of 15 (with the starting XI not exceeding £83m and no club represented by more than three players) ahead of the Gameweek 5 deadline at 11:30 BST on Saturday.

Peter Kouwenberg – who has three top 300 finishes to his name – joins our regular panel of Scoutcast regulars/site contributors Az, Joe and Paul to expand on their notable selections and omissions in the article below.

Liverpool’s tricky-looking fixture at Tottenham Hotspur sees their assets fall from favour, with Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah getting only three votes between them and Andrew Robertson being overlooked entirely.

Marcos Alonso and Benjamin Mendy are backed across the board, as are their team-mates Eden Hazard, Pedro and Sergio Aguero. Alonso, Hazard and Aguero are, in fact, the first names on the teamsheet for all four of our panelists in their respective positions.

Southampton and Wolves assets are also popular this week, most notably in defence and between the sticks.

The first match of the Gameweek, Spurs at home to Liverpool, plays a big part in shaping my squad.

Factor in Man City and Chelsea’s favourable home matches and I’m willing to overlook Mohamed Salah and co. for once.

By avoiding those two teams, there’s an argument for tripling up on City and Chelsea against promoted sides, while Arsenal’s trip to Newcastle could also deliver goals.

The Gunners have netted eight times in the last three Gameweeks, doing so at least twice on each occasion, and are finding their scoring touch ahead of some nice fixtures that could elevate interest in Unai Emery’s regulars.

As most of my attackers are obvious candidates, I have again looked to defence for some differentials.

Jannik Vestergaard could pose a threat for Southampton at home to Brighton. The big centre-half bagged seven goals for Borussia Monchengladbach over the last two Bundesliga seasons and faces a defence ranked third worst for efforts conceded from set-plays.

A clean sheet could also be on the cards. Brighton – along with Cardiff – are one of just two sides yet to score on the road. That echoes their issues from last season, when Chris Hughton’s men scored ten goals away from home.

Matt Doherty’s delivery from right wing-back offers a cut-price option at £4.4m for Wolves’ home clash with Burnley. He’s their top performer for successful open play crosses (11), while five efforts in the box is just one less than Marcos Alonso.

Although they’ve mustered just a single clean sheet, Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have conceded just four big chances, the third most resilient record in the league.

Diego Rico is a slight risk but I reckon he’s done enough to keep his place at home to Leicester, even if Charlie Daniels is passed fit.

Crucially, he took four of Bournemouth’s six corners at Chelsea in Gameweek 4 and created two big chances. Furthermore, no side have allowed fewer big chances than the Cherries’ two. If he’s given dead-ball duties, the summer signing is clearly one to watch.

Manchester City’s continuing fine run of games sees me once again turn to Pep Guardiola’s assets.

Key players such as Sergio Aguero and David Silva were not involved in international duty and should be fresh for Fulham’s visit. With more goal attempts (20) than any other player, the Argentinean striker looks near-essential and the key captaincy option for Gameweek 5.

Meanwhile, David Silva sits at the summit of my “Assist Imminent” table in the Members section, to give me confidence he can turn his strong underlying statistics into tangible returns.

The Sky Blues’ rampaging full-back Benjamin Mendy did feature for France during the international break, but I’m betting his fitness levels will be able to cope with Saturday’s clash with a Fulham side that has conceded nine goals and not managed a clean sheet yet this campaign.

Elsewhere, I like the look of Leicester assets against a Bournemouth outfit that has only managed one shut-out this season. Jamie Vardy’s return from suspension makes him a strong pick. If money is tight, I’ve put forward the Foxes’ creator-in-chief James Maddison, who has taken more corners and delivered more key passes than any of his team-mates. The former Norwich man is also joint-top for shots among Claude Puel’s charges.

Romelu Lukaku’s impressive start to the season has also caught my eye. The 7% of FPL managers who own the Belgian should feel optimistic of returns away to Watford given that he has found the net three times so far and is the second-best player in terms of shots in the box, on-target efforts and big chances.

I sometimes struggle with these Scout Squad selections, but I actually found this one relatively easy to write. There are some really good fixtures out there for us to tap into, although I am not sure there are going to be many clean sheets outside of the obvious Chelsea v Cardiff game.

My biggest selection was going against Mohamed Salah and picking Sadio Mane. Although Salah’s stats are impressive, you can’t ignore the form of Mane and if I were to pick one it would be the Senegalese international. I’m really looking forward to the Spurs game, as it gives both of these teams a chance to make a case for themselves as title challengers. I do think Liverpool have enough to see off Spurs though, which is why I haven’t got any Tottenham assets in my selection.

My midfield is actually quite differential-heavy this week. Eden Hazard is being bought by a lot of people and he’s the man I fear most this week. Neil Warnock has already made some excuses for Cardiff’s inevitable defeat and I can see this being a real rout. If I had Hazard, I’d captain him. I’d also be confident if I owned Pedro (who scored off the bench last week) and Kepa (who has already got a couple of clean sheets to his name). I’m also a very happy Marcos Alonso owner, of course – I wouldn’t want to be without him for this one.

Up front, Sergio Aguero is a no-brainer. He normally starts at home and Fulham won’t sit back; this is going to be an open game and I expect him to bang a couple of goals.

I was really impressed with Alexandre Lacazette leading the line for Arsenal against Cardiff. He looks in great shape and goes up against a Newcastle United side who I still think are in a bit of a crisis.

James Maddison, Jamie Vardy and Ricardo Pereira are my Leicester picks. Over the coming weeks, I expect all three to be in the points and their ownerships to rise. If you don’t own at least one of them, I’d get them in. Pereira loves to maraud forward, Maddison is going to prove his worth as chief creator in the team and Vardy has had a nice rest and should be back to his best. Wildcarders: make sure you’ve grabbed a couple of their assets, is my advice.

It’s a nice mix of premium and budget defenders this week, all of whom I feel have great attacking potential. Marcos Alonso and Benjamin Mendy form two of the three towers constituting many managers’ R-A-M defensive strategy and I suspect their inclusion needs little justification, with Chelsea and Manchester City hosting Cardiff and Fulham respectively.

Huddersfield have had fewer attempts (25) than any other side so far this season and only Leicester have notched the same miserly shots in the box tally (14) so I wanted defensive cover from Crystal Palace in the hope that James Tomkins will be back to help shore things up. Jeffrey Schlupp would probably get the nod if I knew he would be getting the full 90, but I’ve gone for Patrick van Aanholt, who has fired off an effort every hour thus far.

Even cheaper and with potential at both ends are Cedric Soares and Matt Doherty, whose goalkeeping team-mates I’ve also backed against a Brighton side yet to score away from home and a Burnley attack which doesn’t inspire. Diego Rico also deserves an honorary mention after his mouth-watering debut against Chelsea.

I’m just not ready to release Mohamed Salah yet amidst debate as to whether he can repeat last year’s form and whether it’s a myth that the Reds perform best against the top sides. I can’t deny that, for different reasons, both Gylfi Sigurdsson (form) and Raheem Sterling (rotation) could be considered punts, but it’s impossible to resist the temptation of those inviting West Ham and Fulham defences which, along with Huddersfield and Burnley, currently “lead” the goals conceded chart.

My striker selections largely follow the form guide. Short of Pep Guardiola issuing a legally binding assurance that he won’t be starting Sergio Aguero, the Argentinean is likely to carry the hopes and armbands of many an FPL manager this weekend. City’s opponents, Fulham, carry a not insignificant threat of their own in the shape of Aleksandar Mitrovic, who continued his rich vein of form for Serbia earlier in the week and will be aware that the Citizens have not kept a clean sheet since their opening-day victory over Arsenal.

Callum Wilson, meanwhile, is in the form of his life, whilst the aforementioned clash at Goodison Park should be open enough for Marko Arnautovic to get on the scoresheet, despite West Ham’s general malaise.

The Community Champion

This week’s champion is zophar, who has an exceptional track record with seven top 10,000 finishes – the best of which was an overall rank of 17 in 2010/11.

The Community Champion who has the best lead over the Scouts during 2018/19 will win a £100 Amazon voucher (currently we can only offer Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com vouchers).

Last week’s champion, AA33, beat our Scout Picks 41-37 with a 3-4-3 line-up of De Gea (6); Mendy (5), Coleman (2), Alexander-Arnold (2); David Silva (2), Sigurdsson (2), Mkhitaryan (1), Lucas Moura (5); Aguero (6), Aubameyang (8), Tosun (2)

Eden Wizard’s Gameweek 2 victory over the Scout Squad crew by a score of 77-68 remains the deficit to beat.

Couple of doubts in my starting 11, what's my priority here?

    Patrico
    Alonso / Mendy / VVD
    Salah / Mane / Fraser* / Mkhy*
    Aguero / Arnie / Ings

    Foster / W-Bissaka / Schneiderlin / Tomkins*

    1FT - 1.0 itb

    A) Mkhy > Pedro/Maddison
    B) Tomkins > Rico
    C) Hope Mkhy starts and let the bench cover Fraser

Would like to keep Fraser if he's only out short term.

    Play W-Bissaka over VVD?

    Thanks

Save transfer. That's what a solid bench is for. Fraser still looks a great option and Bournemouth have great fixtures

Really tough this one. Would lean towards Mkhi to Pedro though, given that you don't have Hazard.

Could be a 4-0 type game for Chelsea so you'll want to try and get as much of that action as possible.

Wait on Fraser / Tomkins news though.

How risky to go with Bennett to increase budget, would be short term in addition to AWB and Peltier?

The points are in def - Alonso, Mendy, Trippier, Shaw etc.

would be to allow Fraser -> Pedro. Trippier , Shaw or Robertson will have to wait (have Alonso+Mendy)

I did it. Coleman ->Bennett with Peltier, AWB, Mendy and Alonso. Add some free money to upgrade Tosun next week to Vardy or Laca. Or even Lukaku for a hit. Will see how it works.

    Shaw - Robertson - Mendy
    Salah - Mane - BSilva - Mikhi
    Zaha - Aguerro - Ings

Subs; Hamer - Neves - AWB - Daniels

I have 2FT and looking at doing Daniels,B.Silva and Mikhi > Hazard, Bennett and Billing.

Wouldn't take a hit if it means getting players like Billing. That basically leaves you with a lot of sub-5m players like Neves, Billing, Ings.

Just ditch one of Salah or Mane if you want Eden.

Gather some courage and give one of them the boot.

I don't see the point - 23m tied up in 2 players with not so great fixtures + rotation risk as hinted by their gaffer.

At his price, he offers tremendous value even if he doesn't start every game.

And with his quality in Sarri's system, I expect him to start most games ahead of Willian.

I think Hazard will do well over next few weeks. At the same time I can’t dump Salah with Southampton at home. Plan was to do Salah > Hazard but I don’t really need the extra cash and selling Salah is just scary.

Originally thought I would WC next week (before GW6), but looking at my side I can only really see 4 big issues in my starting XI:
    Mkhi / Bilva / Arnie / King.

Would anyone else just use a -8 across 2 gameweeks to sort these, exercising some patience?

My team needs some fixing too. I’m doing 4 transfers for -4s over the next 2 weeks. Late WC in November would really be helpful for Xmas time rotations. I’m trying to hold WC for as Long as possible

Seen a few mention the christmas rotations on WC discussions - does that mean WC-ing so your bench is stronger for that intense run of games & just making sure you don't end up fielding 9/10?

I'd probably just switch Mkhy this week, Arnie & King could do well for you this week. Bilva a good fixture but if you wanted to do a hit, I'd do it for the two mids.

I'm planning Arnie > Mitrovic next week.

Yeah those are players I'm thinking of moving on in a GW6 wildcard as opposed to this week, apologies should have made clearer!

Arnie -> Mitro for me as well next week, definitely. Just not sure on the other moves, and whether they're worth either a hit or a WC.
Looking at Maddison, Laca, Wilson, Dilva, Alli. Usual names really.

If those are your only issues, keep your WC. Take one hit next week if you still want to.

Richarlison returning could be a good reason to keep Bilva one more week.

Wilson has form + fixtures. He plays upfront with King who is unselfish unlike Wilson which is great because that bodes well for his FPL prospects.

Mitrovic has a few tricky fixtures mid term. And having watched him over the years, he has a tendency to get booked when things aren't working in his favour.

And this is coming from someone who has owned Mitrovic at the start of the season.

May I ask what would you do with 1.2 ITB or just leave it?
Could upgrade bench if Silva is rested or Shaw is going to miss more than one gameweek.

I would have Doherty in place of Bennett just in case he ends ups losing his place.

Hojberg to Hughes or any 5m mid sounds like a good idea.

This leaves you with a great starting XI, solid bench and 0.3m ITB. And possibility 2FTs the week after, bar injuries.

Talisman, everything goes through him, in form, fixtures are quite good after City IMO, once you consider the fact that Everton and Arsenal cannot defend.

They're tough games for Fulham, granted, but I can see Mitro scoring in defeats/draws.

He's far from a Talisman at Fulham.

They have great quality in the form of Schurrle, Seri who are capable of delivering the goods. I agree Mitrovic would be more involved than the other two but when you say Talisman - we're talking about someone who's the only source of points in a team; like Sigurdsson during his Swansea days, Josh King during that incredible spell of form a couple of years back, Payet at West Ham a couple of seasons back.

Bottomed, so here we go again. Pick the best trio for a WC team:

    A) Shaw + Moura + Ings (Two 4.5 keepers)
    B) Shaw + Pedro + Mitrovic (Hamer + 4.5 keeper)
    C) Holebas + Pedro + Mitrovic (Hamer + 4.5 keeper+ 0.3)

(AWB or Bennett would have to cover for Shaw if he misses this GW.)

    Cheers!

It's a close call as Moura(with son back) ,Pedro(Willian lurking) both are rotation risks.

Also shaw's injury needs to be monitored

A will be my choice,as I think Moura is playing very advanced & son will need some time to rest

Most have been working on the assumption that Luke Shaw will miss the Watford match.

Shaw has been excellent for Jose Mourinho at the beginning of the 2018-19 season.

Shaw has started all four Premier League matches, while he’s scored and assisted in those games.

Moreover, Shaw, who was omitted from England’s World Cup squad, earned a recall to the national team during the international break.

Against Spain, Shaw started at left-back. He also set up Marcus Rashford for England’s goal against La Roja.

But Shaw’s Spain game ended abruptly after he suffered a nasty head injury in a challenge with Dani Carvajal.

Concussed, Shaw needed oxygen and a stretcher to exit the field against Spain.

But, in a shock update from the BBC’s Simon Stone, it’s been revealed that Shaw may play for Man United against Watford.

I may score 100 points this gameweek, but I'm 99% I won't. No quotes, no source, just a handwavy statement about the United medical centre meeting requirements. It's shoddy journalist clickbait targeting fpl managers. No different from the Jamie Jackson article.

        Correct. The protocol is:
"The guidelines work on a step-by-step basis, with a player only allowed to progress a step every 24 hours - although this process can often take longer. The steps are: No physical activity, light aerobic exercise, sport specific exercise, non-contact training drills, full contact training, return to play (after an all-clear from the club's medical officer)."

It is but there are certain exceptions to it which the United medical staff are believed to have met.

Jose and the staff will take the final call tho (as per the report).

        1. Son is Rising
          • 15 Years

Nope. The exceptions are to a 14 day rule. In this case because the United facilities meet the "enhanced care setting" criteria he follows the pathway above. If he was an amateur or at a club which didn't meet those criteria he would have 14 days of rest prior to the light aerobic exercise.

‘If I drink I don’t have one or two i have 15’ - Troy Deeney

He’s given up drinking and got in a good training/diet program to get better on the pitch. His performance so far speak for itself. Anyone on wildcard should consider him as an enabler.

What to do with Walcott who is probably gonna be out this week

    A) transfer walcott out for 6.7 m mid, I have Maddison & I don't see many good options whom I wold like for long term.

    B) play AWB for walcott this week & have 2FT next week to get richarlison & upgrade other positions.

Currently very confused but slightly inclined towards B

He was a 2 week punt for me, but it has massively backfired.

        1. Mo Mané Mo Problems
          • 11 Years

He was never going to start. If you are punting on 4.5m midfielders that aren't going to get into your XI, without being harsh, you need to re-read the FPL for dummies chapter on 'picking a 4.5m bench midfielder'.

Was always going to be picked up by the casuals, not play, and be sold by the casuals using non-wc transfers because they don't realise making a transfer on your 4.5m fodder midfielder is pointless, or having a front 8 is a waste of cash.

Hudson-Odoi falling to 4.3m was probably the most obvious thing that could have happened in FPL this season so far.

          1. Licious Lizard
            • 13 Years

Yeah I admit I didn’t think it through properly.
My thought was than I would rather have him as a higher point potential punt compared to someone like Stephens, who is a certain 1-2 pointer.
Obviously I didn’t predict it correctly and was prepared for .1m price hit, but I am honestly surprised with his second fall.
Who uses their FTs for HIM???

            1. Mo Mané Mo Problems
              • 11 Years

Casuals. They can't resist a 5m Neves, 5.5m Fraser, etc., and love benching headaches.

I started with Stephens knowing in all likeliness he will never get off my bench, especially the first 5 game weeks when I've got a fresh squad.

My only requirement for a 4.5m midfielder for the first 5 game weeks would be not to fall in value.

When I wildcarded I went Stephens to Westwood as I thought Stephens would fall soon. This was amateur as most Stephens owners were non-casuals and were using wildcards to transfer him out, and therefore his -99% on FPLStats is not accurate. Yet, no way I'd pick him right now as he could fall anytime. Still see him in wildcard teams though.

Yeah you might the right call obviously. Just pick a nailed starter with no likely price falls.
If Hudson-Odoi had even featured in one of the first 2 matches, he would probably have risen instead of falling.
Oh well. Lesson learnt. Will probably just keep him for a while now.

I am keeping for now. Depending on price status, I might not even drop him on WC. 4.3m is fine for a 3rd bench player and you don’t really need him to play .
