The Gameweek 6 captain debate looks set to be the most difficult of the season so far.

The top three candidates according to our poll all have favourable fixtures and can also boast impressive underlying numbers.

While there are alternative options worth considering, this week we seek to answer which one of Mohamed Salah, Eden Hazard and Sergio Aguero should get your armband.

Captain Poll

Gameweek 6 could prove an incredibly dramatic one as the most-sold player is the current captain poll leader.

Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) has already been transferred out by 219,000+ Fantasy managers but has a 30% share of our vote (at time of writing).

The Liverpool man has blanked for two weeks in a row, and five midfield options have registered more points than him so far this season.

However, it would seem that those who have voted in our poll are keeping faith in Salah based on some impressive underlying statistics that we’ll touch on below. A home fixture against Southampton is hugely appealing, too.

Currently occupying second place is last week’s hat-trick hero Eden Hazard (£10.9m), who has been backed by roughly 22% of voters.

The Chelsea man is now the only FPL asset to register returns in every match so far, despite not even starting the first two Gameweeks.

His next opponent West Ham are still without a clean sheet, and their defensive frailties should prove easy for Hazard to exploit.

Last week’s runaway captain poll winner Sergio Aguero (£11.4m) has to settle for third place this time around with 18% of the votes.

Large numbers of his owners will admit to being disappointed that the Manchester City forward only registered two assists against Fulham and no goals. That may be one of the reasons why more are trusting Salah and Hazard.

Also, the Argentinian picked up a knock in that match but returned to action for a substitute’s appearance against Lyon in the Champions League midweek.

The fact that he did not start on Wednesday night suggests that, at the very least, he will lead the line on Saturday when the defending champions visit a vulnerable Cardiff City side.

Not surprisingly, Fantasy managers are considering Sadio Mané (£10.0m) as the best of the rest, with an 8% share of the vote. The Senegalese midfielder offers a cheaper route into the Liverpool attack than Salah, is in good form and may relish a match against his former employers in Southampton.

Romelu Lukaku (£11.0m) and Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.8m) both sit in the 3% bracket while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.9m), Jamie Vardy (£8.9m), Ryan Fraser (£5.7m). Harry Kane (£12.5m) and Roberto Firmino (£9.4m) are the only other options currently above 1%.

Does anyone have any thoughts on banging ZAHA as captain? I reckon he's gonna smash it this weekend.

I probably wouldn´t put Salah as (c).. in bad form looks mentally and fysically tired and frustrated and good chance he might get the rest now before tough 4 games ahead (Chelsea x 2, Napoli, ManC) so there is a doubt for me if he will play or even perform too well.. Shaqiri might get his starting debut this week to get Slah some fresh legs for tougher fixtures.. just a feeling

Am thinking about doing a short pod (2-5 mins) per week around Blackbox Thinking (basically because I've just read the book and loved it).
That is keeping track of my successes and failures throughout the season and trying to learn from them, while also considering what makes a successful decision and what makes a real mistake.
I figured come the end of the season, I would have a big pool of successes and failures all documented which I could then learn from next season, to try and build on and learn from.

Wondered if people would be interested in this type of thing?

So for example, my success this week:

Benched the player who was at risk of rotation (decided to play Jonny over Gundogan due to fears of rotation. Jonny delivered 6 points, and Gundogan was benched by Man City)

    Failures

Not listening to own advice (avoided Hazard despite talking him up on the FPL show and on Scoutcast as being the top captaincy option)

Brought in rotation risk (brought in Pedro, a player I knew was a rotation risk and don't really like as an FPL option just because he had a strong home game against Cardiff)

Wasted FT when should have saved (was not 100% sure on what to use my FT on, ended up using it when saving it would put me in a much better position for GW 6)

Brought in player for short-term (despite knowing that I wanted Richarlison back in I still went for Pedro - so knew bringing in Pedro was going to be another transfer out waiting to happen

Doesnt Mark do this type of thing - written pearls of wisdom that he stores in a jar to reflect on at season’s end? Would be great for individual assessment, however, not sure it warrants a good podcast as every individual has a very different set of circumstances and decisions

Does he? Will have to ask him.
The point of it would be to categorise and show the frequencies of what makes a mistake and a failure.
So for example "went with gut feeling" could be a success, or could be a failure. Be interesting to see at the end of the season how many were successes and how many were failures, and then I could hopefully learn from them next year (e.g. if they were all failures, don't make so many gut decision moves)

this is why I wanted to see what the perception was, it is quite an individual thing, but I guess people might want to watch to learn from them - and if it was only a few mins long, wouldnt eat up too much of peoples time.

If there sno interest in watching me prattle on though, i'll stick to my excel sheet!

Failures and what you learned from that is interesting.

I take myself as example: I do not want to hear anyone say they had a good gameweek if I did not have a good gameweek myself. So I would not listen if I had a disappointing week if you get me

haha yeah i'm the same tbh.
The idea would be completely about me not boasting or shouting about great decisions, it would be focused on the decision itself.
So it wouldn't be "Look at me i brought in aguero for a hit i'm so clever" - it would be more "took a hit based on stats" - if I could show that move has more successes than failures over a season, it might show that kind of move is better to do than not do - if you get me.

I don't listen to any FPL podcasts, but I think I'd give this a go. The shorter format appeals to me.

I like the idea of aggregating anecdotal evidence. I think we all try to make decisions based on past mistakes or successes, but without properly recording them it's prone to a number of biases and flawed thinking.

          Thank you!

I studied a lot of stats in college and work in data but for some reason never put much work into FPL research. Generally speaking I can't stand anecdotal evidence or flawed reasoning, but inexplicably find myself drawn to nostalgic picks, mavericks for maverickism's sake, eye test over stats etc... I play like a casual but put in the time of an addict.

Anyway my meandering point was that a podcast like this would be a nice way to combine the fun anecdotal side of FPL with the more useful rigorous statistical side. I would definitely listen.

I’d be interested in that. Helps to try and sort out our innate non-statistical biases with hindsight!

One thing though - video might be fine, but maybe consider (also) doing an audio-only format, like Applebonkers does for FPL Toilet? Not with the sound effects and jingles (unless you want to...!), I mean how he uses the Anchor app to record and publish it. That way it’s a bit more accessible for everyone at any time, rather than having to sit with YouTube playing open on my phone. (Or maybe that’s just me that prefers audio to video?)

Irbox just said to me re: Salah, "Form is temporary, class is permanent" so, here is the data.

Mo Salah league goals per game:
    Fiorentina 14-15: 0.38
    Roma 15-16: 0.41
    Roma 16-17: 0.48
    Liverpool 17-18: 0.89
    Liverpool 18-19: 0.4

Form indeed is temporary and, one of those seasons looks to be an anomaly...

N.B I'm going to captain him (so i hope to be wrong) but, having watched him a few times, he really has lost his shooting boots.

i'm wondering whether he's completely over his injury. still strapping on his shoulder.
with that price tag need to be captaining him most weeks.
do think last year was an exception and is he going to be 3m better than the likes of Sterling.

I don't want you to base it on anything else, but the fact is that 2018/19 is a very small sample set.

Had salah got the pass from mane on Saturday and slotted it home, his 2018/19 GW avg would be 0.6. A brace and he is up to 0.8. As I say, the sample size for this season isn't big enough yet.

Last season was undoubtedly an anomaly and regression is expected, however, he is a much more developed player now in a very fluent and attacking team. I don’t expect him to match last season’s heroics but the stats are still very positive for another strong campaign. Thanks for the stats - always interesting!

        • 7 Years

Interesting stats for the big picture indeed! I hope he finds his feet but, he has one of the worst conversion rates of any player this year!

If he regressed to the mean, you'd expect 15.9 goals in 38 starts, not enough to merit £13ml!

        1. IRBOX ⚽
          • 8 Years

I think he will hit 20-25 and plenty of assists which strictly speaking is not good value. The true value lies with the captaincy, but is it enough?

          1. Eden Wizard
            • 7 Years
            7 years, 5 months ago

That would be ~225 + bonus so, yes, i'd say so with Captaincy!

      2. Eden Wizard
        • 7 Years
        7 years, 5 months ago

        Broadly calculated to:
        16 * 5 = 80 for goals
        38 * 2.5 (appearance + clean sheets) = 95
High chance creation approx. 10 assists = 30

        ~205 predicted on this basis!

    considering a late WC.
    Goalkeepers currently FAb/Fos which i don't like.
Thoughts on a set and forget keeper or rotating keepers?
On fixtures Etheridge and Ryan look decent as a rotating.
Dubravka has great fixtures as a set and forget - know they haven't started well but 4 tough fixtures to start with and Newcastle are fairly defensive.
