We have revised our Watchlist player rankings for goalkeepers and defenders following Gameweek 6.

The Watchlist can be found in your sidebar on a desktop, or via your slide-in menu on mobile or tablet. It acts as a collection of our current thoughts on player selection for each position, also citing the factors that affect their ranking on the list.

As a general rule, we try to commit to just one player per position per club. However, in some cases we where we believe double-coverage is advisable, two players will be listed instead.

Goalkeepers

Ederson (£5.6m) remains top of the Watchlist after securing his third clean sheet and a fourth return of the campaign in Gameweek 6. However, the Manchester City man loses his Favourable Fixtures factor with two particularly tough matches in their next four. Home matches against Brighton and Burnley sit alongside trips to Liverpool and Tottenham.

Alisson (£5.6m) also retains his place in the Watchlist based on his impressive form. The Liverpool man has kept a clean sheet in all but two matches so far this season. Neither of the fixtures factors applies to Alisson though with two favourable matches against Huddersfield and Cardiff coming after Chelsea and Man City.

Rui Patrício (£4.5m) and David de Gea (£5.9m) are two more non-movers on the Watchlist with no change in their respective form or quality of fixtures.

Kasper Schmeichel (£5.0m) and Petr Cech (£5.0m) appear next to reflect their continued good fixtures. Neither side has been particularly adept at keeping clean sheets in 2018/19, but they still have the potential. Schmeichel sits a little higher for an increased certainty of a start.

Joe Hart (£4.5m) is the first of two new inclusions in the Goalkeeper section of the Watchlist. His clean sheet against Bournemouth was his second of the season as the Clarets work towards improving on a poor start. Neither fixtures factor applies to him with Cardiff and Huddersfield up next but Man City and Chelsea after that.

Wayne Hennessey (£4.5m) drops a little bit despite recording a third clean sheet of the season in Gameweek 6. Just below him is our second new entry Martin Dubravka (£5.0m). Newcastle’s fixtures are on the turn now and apart from a trip to Manchester United in Gameweek 8, have several with clean sheet potential between now and Gameweek 19.

The popularity of Marcos Alonso (£6.9m) has pushed Kepa (£5.5m) off the Watchlist. The left-back is heavily owned for his offensive potential, and the current state of Chelsea’s fixtures do not encourage double-coverage of their defence.

Asmir Begovic (£4.5m) also dropped off after yet another match in which Bournemouth conceded more goals than their underlying numbers suggested they should have done.

Defenders

Alonso remains the top pick in defence. The Chelsea man has returned points in all but one match thus far in 2018/19, with three clean sheets, a goal and five assists to his name.

Kieran Trippier (£6.1m) has received a boost after registering his second assist of the season in Gameweek 6. He rises up the ranks as a result of other premium options facing injury and/or tough fixtures. Conversely, Spurs rank second for defence on our Season Ticker over the next six Gameweeks, and Trippier has a role in set pieces.

Andrew Robertson (£6.2m) just about holds onto his place but Trent Alexander-Arnold has run him close. The Scottish left-back has shown more consistent attacking returns over the course of the season so far, and we believe he is more likely to continue that during tough fixtures. Robertson is also more adept at picking up bonus points with Alexander-Arnold already earning three yellow cards this season.

Aymeric Laporte (£5.5m) takes Benjamin Mendy’s place on the Watchlist with a fair bit of uncertainty over the wing-back’s fitness. There is no return date on him currently and until we know more, we have to take him off. Laporte is the most reliable replacement considering he has played every minute of the league campaign so far and has some goal threat too.

Matt Doherty (£4.4m) tops off the best of the rest with Wolves’ defensive potential, appealing fixtures and his budget price. Jose Holebas (£4.9m) loses his price-related tag now that he has risen in price again but still stays in our thoughts with Watford’s relatively kind run and his role in set pieces. The Greek also receives a ‘Sus’ factor as he is one yellow card away from a one-match suspension.

Luke Shaw‘s (£5.1m) return to the Man United team keeps him in the Watchlist and he manages to lose his Rotation Risk factor. Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.3m) sits just below him. His slight increase in value has reduced his appeal a little for non-owners and only one of Crystal Palace’s next six fixtures looks like one where a clean sheet is likely for him.

DeAndre Yedlin (£4.5m) moves onto the defence Watchlist for the same reason as Dubravka. The American has a goal and an assist to his name so far this season and is the most assured of a start out of the budget options available at Newcastle. Jamaal Lascelles is arguably a bit too pricey while there is competition for places at left-back and centre-back between Ciaran Clark, Fabian Schär and Paul Dummett.

Ben Chilwell (£5.0m) takes the place of colleague Ricardo Pereira after the latter was dropped for Gameweek 6. Pereira was held accountable by the local press for the manner of Leicester’s heavy defeat to Bournemouth in Gameweek 5. It appears that manager Claude Puel was in agreement as he deployed Daniel Amartey in his stead against Huddersfield. Meanwhile, Chilwell held onto his place and continued to post encouraging underlying statistics.

He has looked pretty rubbish so far tbh. But he looked a bit more like his old self after scoring his penalty, said he felt happier afterwards, and has the 2 worst teams in the league back to back. Plus he’s shown in the past he has hat-trick potential.

      nice options!

I really like the prospect of 1. for these two coming GWs and after the IB Kane to whoever seems best at the time (Arnie//Mitro/Gray/Denney etc) and Richarlison to Salah (if you can afford it)

Think you can get the most out of all of three of them that way, maybe all four even

Cheers. Yeah too many options, still loads of changes I want to make. I definitely wildcarded too early. I’ll be getting in Mitro and Arnie pretty soon anyway. And probably Hazard and Maddison as well as Richarlison. I’ve already got Salah by the way.

Wgat do you think about this for next gw?

    Ederson
    Trippier, Doherty, Alonso
    Hazard, Richarlison, Fraser, Maddison
    Kane, Aguero(c) , Mitrovic

    Bench: Stekelenburg, Fellaini, TAA, WB

Getting Salah back for gw9, and still thinking should I maybe captain Kane..

I just think I am going to. Brighton don't look as bad as Huddersfield this season, and Kane will play the whole match while Kun will probably get 60 minutes. Last season Brighton were tough to break and Kun scored in 60th or 70th minute, and at home he did not score against them. Spurs trashed Huddersfield exactly a year ago away from home 4-0 with Kane scoring twice and adding an assist in first half!

So yeah, I'm probably going with Kane(c)

I’m really considering going all in with Kane to be honest. Could should start but could easy have his minutes managed again. Yes he could also get a hat trick but so could Kane. It’s a tough one actually.

I don't own him unfortunately, however as a Liverpool fan I would say that next GW is better for that if you want to 'take a punt' at him (if you can all it that). Liverpool generally don't score many goals vs Chelsea, and especially not away from home. Of course that may be different under Sarri, but I still see us having a better chance of scoring goals vs City because Peps style of play suits Klopp's perfectly and they never sit back, which leaves ton's of space for liverpool's front three to dance around in..

This game week it "has to be" Aguero.

      good luck!

I had Fabianski last week, didn't move before he scored 11. I JUST looked at Fabri and thought, though he's close, he's a GK, so not moving too fast... 🙁
Instead of rotating two 4.5s, I'm now using the main or nothing strategy. Probably worthwhile unless a trade and 0.1 is convenient.

    A question for gw9 onwards.

Would you rather have Salah, Hazard, Richarlison, Maddison and Fraser with Kun and Mitrovic or a bench fodder in place of Richarlison or Maddison and a decent third striker?

    1. Sharpe Shuffle
      • 9 Years
      7 years, 2 months ago

See how Maddison goes. If he continues as he is, keep him. If he drops off, could look at Arni/Zaha/Ings etc. I think Richarlison will be worth keeping

    2. SC not pearls before swine
      • 15 Years

So basically the question is Richarlison or Maddison vs a striker priced somewhere between 5.5-7? I think I slightly prefer the strikers (I like Ings the best, maybe Arnie) to Maddison, but it's a close call and worth watching how everyone you're considering plays the next two weeks.

Yeah its tough. My situation is I have both and might get rid of one for Kane. losing Mane gives me less money so have to settle for Bennett instead of Doherty but Hazard has a better fixture next week. Still have WC to sort team out in a couple of weeks for fixture swings so fancy a punt on Kane

I like the Kane punt, as you’ve seen below I’m wanting to do the same.

Would you be playing the defender much? I really do think (maybe being biased) that Doherty is worth the extra over Bennett but if you aren’t planning on playing them often the difference won’t really matter as much and I do think Hazard is a better option than Mane as it stands.

I feel like Pool's defence is just going to shut hazard down and not allow him to have the ball.

I'm going to go Mane because 1) I have him 2) I don't see Chelsea's defence containing both Mane and Salah the whole 90

How are Newcastle’s and Brighton’s defensive prospects currently looking? I want to bring in either Yedlin or Duffy but I really can’t decide which one is best.

I know the weeks I’ll play them as it’s part of a three way rotation with Doherty and AWB and Newcastle’s fixtures are at home while Brighton’s are away. Would this make Yedlin the better pick?

I'd go with Newcastle due to a very long run of good fixtures. Not a good team (Newcastle fan) but always the chance of a clean sheet with the way we play

Thanks. I take it Yedlin is nailed? Who’s his position at threat from and does he look a decent attacking threat?

Newcastle are very short of options in both full back positions. when Yedlin is out we often have to use defensive mids to cover. so yeah he's nailed. He has the potential for the occasional attacking return as he can hurt teams with his pace on counter attacks but don't expect too much in that sense

Ok. Thank you, that’s really helpful. I suppose even with little threat he’s still a decent enough pick considering the fixtures.

I would only ‘plan’ to play him two or three times in the next ten anyway.

No I don't think so when you factor in Cardiff (H) for Kane after that. Never fancy Lukaku personally, doesn't explode like Kane can

This (while it may be true) doesn’t really come into my thinking as I think Lukaku is different as a player, playing for a different team with a different attacking style. And while he has done well against the Hammers and may well do this weekend I don’t think this is a factor I like to include in my judgement of a move as I’m unsure of the actual gravity of it.

Fair enough. I’m a West Ham fan, and have seen him bang then in for fun against us, no matter the team nor the form he is in. But hopefully he proves me wrong this time.

Yeah that’s worrying more so then. Hopefully you can do what you did to Chelsea and keep tight at the back. Especially with Man Utd having a less ruthless attack than Chelsea.

Then you can open the floodgates to Kane a few weeks later 😉

Yeah the never exploding part was a big part of my thinking too. I only brought him in a few weeks ago but Man Utd haven’t turned the corner I thought they had and despite Lukaku’s stats he’s now blanked in two games in a row (including today) and the two results just seem to suggest Man Utd are still struggling.

It would be Mendy and Lukaku to Yedlin and Kane.

I’m already set on wanting to do the defender transfer, pretty much regardless of Mendy’s injury situation as I want to free up funds and also start being able to play Doherty and AWB in my starting eleven.

So then I can ether keep Rom or switch to Harry for a hit.

Also I would then get Salah in GW10 for Kane most likely so rather than a switcharoo like in your case it’s more of a daisy chain.

    Mendy, Alonso, Robertson, AWB, Bednarek
    Salah, Hazard, Maddison, Richarlison, Fraser
    Aguero, Mitrovic, Kamara

    0.5itb 1ft

I had lined up Bednarek > Doherty. I don't think i'll find out about Mendy before Doherty rises or if even get a concrete answer at the press conference. Is it daft to stick with the original plan and address Mendy the following week?

Yeah if you’re happy to keep money in defence then I’d wait on Mendy another week and get Bernadek turned into a playing defender which while not the most glamorous move it will mean that in future weeks when you sort Mendy out you will have a more overall stronger squad due to having more starters.

As an owner of Doherty I’m super happy to have him so I can see the appeal.

I’d personally be happy enough to make the move. It’s nice to wait until pressers etc but I wouldn’t want to have to pick second best in Jonny it you will be getting priced out.

Mendy and zaha to Doherty and mitrovic?
    Rest of team is
    Ederson
    WanB Mendy Robertson
    Hazard salah Maddison Fraser
    Aguero king zaha
    Bench: hammer cook pva Stephens.

Move gives me money in the bank for either pva to alonso or aguero to Kane (c) next gw depending on how Kane does this week, also helps me to start getting rid of palace players before their death run of fixtures starts.
Zaha hasn’t done poorly but I think mitro is the better long term pick, and zaha looks like he will get a red card soon enough, doesn’t get bp, doesn’t score multiples...

Kane would be temporary if I even get him. Not convinced by him, but if he tears it against Huddersfield I need to be able to jump on him for the Cardiff game. After that I go back to salah/aguero cap rotation. Don’t see any strong capt options that particular week with hazard away and pool v city.

Alternatively I can just do Pedro--> Richardlison but then I will have a massive benching headache.(Need to drop one of Haz,Salah,Lucas,Fraser, Richa or Wilson). Doesnt help getting Kane in for GW8 either.

current front 8: Hazard, Salah, Lucas, Fraser, Pedro; Mitro, Kun, Wilson.

Who knows. Wouldn’t have thought he would have played tonight if he was, but it’s a lottery.

I couldn't believe he started last night, it certainly clouds this for us now.
Can easily see him being benched unfortunately.

Im looking at Shaw now, Young playing against Derby and not being great could be good news for Shaw

          Nice podcast triggerlips.
I’d be a bit wary of Shaw after tonight. He was sat with Pogba in the stands and it almost seemed like taking sides against Mourino. While Young was given the captains armband. But I’m probably reading too much into it.
