Meet the Manager #3 – Will Thomas

Will Thomas is among Fantasy Football’s rare polymaths, with the ability to excel in two different formats, Fantasy Premier League and Sky Fantasy Football.

In FPL he has five top 10,000 finishes including overall ranks of 753 and 82, while on Sky he has breached the top 100 on four occasions.

But as Will explains in our latest Meet the Manager video interview, juggling two different formats can have its pitfalls as well as its advantages.

He chats to me about his strategies for success and how to achieve a top finish. We also look back on his 2017/18 campaign, in which hedging his picks across two formats cost him dearly in FPL.

In addition, he reveals how Sky’s patient approach, due to limited transfers, as well as its focus on fixtures with multiple captaincy selections allowed, has helped Will to excel across most of his FPL career.

Will’s views on the current season also prove illuminating, including why managers need to take advantage of an unusually high number of budget gems this term.

He also reveals why he is shunning Harry Kane and is instead pinning his hopes for success on another, far cheaper, striker.

With a current FPL rank of 26,711, he looks to be already on his way to another strong season.

The chat with Will is available to view on Youtube here and in the embedded video below.

The first Meet the Manager video, featuring Triggerlips can be viewed here, while the second, featuring Philman, can be seen here.

    Best 4.4 / 4.5 option in midfield?
    Masuaku or Hojberg?
Or are there anyone else I don't know about.. 🙂

Westwood? An assist each in the last 2 games. Started and played the full 90 minutes for every game so far except one.

Camarasa/Obiang other decent options. Wouldn't go Masuaku as he is playing at LB and not getting forward much with Anderson playing infront of him

That’s tough. WHU are on the up and Yarma and Anderson clicking, Arny could score huge over the next 10-12.

In situations like this which end up being essentially 50/50s, I prefer to go with the player that I prefer personally. This may include character, style of play, team he's in - in general, do I like him. It's not always right on the coinflip but at least you can stand the player you chose. If I had to choose I'd go for Arnie as I remember the Mitro of NEW days and I fear he'll end up back headbutting people.

I have both but personally prefer Arnie slightly more (from a biased West Ham fan). Although I do think Arnie is more clinical. Only needs 1 or 2 chances to score

    @Zico

Finally decided for the FH, final team:

    Hart
    Alonso Trippier Smalling
    Hazard Ozil Lamela Knockaert
    Kane Lacazette Lamela

    Hamer; Doherty, Westwood, 3.9

    Good luck to all

Interesting - assume the last Lamela is Vardy?

I reckon you get more change out of Gudmundsson than Knockeart if you can squeeze him in

Wow, I typed my team quite wrong.

      Knock > Gudmudsson
      Lamela > Arny

Smalling because Newcastle have conceded the most set pieces and 2nd most headed shots.

Hmmm, I'd go for Vardy and/or Maddison in there over Ozil/Arnie. Ozil sucks and rarely ever hauls

Ozil in form and likely to claim his CAM spot back, in a game where he’ll see plenty of the ball.

Vardy against Everton doesn’t suit him in my mind, much better against a high line.

Everton don't exactly sit back. Probably one of the most susceptible teams in the league to runs in behind

Talked up far too much on here.

Leciester have LESS than one expected goal / game at home.

Everton have right around 1 xGoal against away from home.

Regression will happen, but this is of course just how I see things.

One week shouts can always go either way.

A bit better, and Brighton are a bit worse, but I suppose I’m just nitpicking because I’m
Likely to go with them haha, that’s an easy thing to do.

                      No, it’s not.

                      Leciester at home 2.64

Ah, I counted 4 away for West Ham. My mistake. I think it's 3.00 in 3 games though, so not sure where 3.17 came from

Leciester 3 games, 2.64 expected goals.

WHU 3 games, 3.17 expected goals.

With a FH you really need to nail the starters imv and not risk any possible 10 minute off the bench cameo players in your starting 11 ... will be interesting if your starting 11 are all in the team line-ups

Good luck with your strategy, great to see some different thinking 🙂

    Need some advice. Current team:
    Foster
    Alonso AWB Shaw
    Hazard (C) Mane Walcott Fraser
    Aguero Vardy King
    Bench: Hart Mendy Robbi Odoi

    I have 2 FTs

Option 2: Trippier for Mendy and Lamela for Walcott
    Option 3: something else?

If going Trippier/Mendy/Robertson, it means a 4.0 keeper, and a 4.3 midfielder, not optimal I think?
    Mid+attack I'm happy about.

Fab / Pat | Great rotation
Alonso - Trent | Doherty / Yedlin / Wan Bissaka | Great rotation too
    Salah - Hazard - Richard - Maddison | Hojberg
    Aguero - Arnatovic - Mitrovic

    Any flaws, and thoughts?

Nearly same with my planned wc team for gw 9 but only go with 1 playing GK and go with double Liverpool in defense.

      Fab or Patricio
      Alonso, Robbo, TAA
Salah, Haz, Maddison, Rich Kun, Arnie, Mitro
      (Button, AWB, Bennett, 4.4m mid)

It's interesting that there's so much clamour for Kane v Cardiff but little for Lacazette v Fulham. Both in similar form against similarly weak defences.

Spurs players must be physically and mentally drained after the Barce game .... Kane & Spurs in for a subdued game against a fired up Cardiff ?

Perhaps, however these are professional footballers. Kane drags around all game anyways.

No amount of overthinking will put you at ease. Either don't get him and suck it up if he tears it up, or take the hit and get him. There is no point in over-analyzing and second-guessing a match against a team like Cardiff.

    Cheers

Struggling with team selection this week, almost tempted to go with five at the back. How's this looking at the moment?

    Hennessey
    Alonso - Robertson - Holebas - Wan-Bissaka
    Hazard - Mane - Richarlison
    Kane(c) - Mitrovic - Arnautovic

    Ryan - Doherty - Fraser - Hughes

    1. Respect My Authoritah

I'd start Doherty over AWB and Hughes over Holebas

yeah struggling to pick between Doherty and AWB, I could easily see that game being 0-0. Although I do think Holebas has more points potential than Hughes, set-pieces + potential clean sheet points

    Hennessey
    Trippier Alonso WB
    Hazard Mane Fraser Maddison
    Aguero Laca Jimenez

    Patricio Cedric Billing Mendy

This is my current team...any changes you guys suggest?

    A) Should I sell Laca and Buy Arnie?
    B) Mendy with Shaw or Someone?
    C) Jimenez with Ings?
    D) Cedric with Doherty?
    E) Save my FT?

If you want to do A I would wait, Laca has the better fixture this week. If you're happy with your team this week no need to do B as he cold be back next week. C is a bit sideways but D looks like a good move in general. So either D or E

Hazard or Salah for the next two weeks?

Haz has Southampton (a) then United (h)
    - on top form
    - max baps almost guaranteed even if he gets an assist imo
    - on pens
    - saints look poor at the back and united are simply rotten...will mourinho pull one out the bag against chelsea?
    - anyone know hazard's scoring record again saints and united?

Salah has City (h) then Huddersfield (a)
    - pool and salah not fully flowing but salah's stats are still good.
    - however, they beat city 3 times last year...pep would have learned by now so is due a win against pool?
    - huddersfield fixture is about the same level as chelsea's fixture against saints away

Just to add another layer of complexity,
    - If i keep salah, i will do mendy >> doherty to raise funds for kane...so it will be doherty + salah for two weeks
    - if i get hazard, i will do salah > hazard to raise funds for kane..so it will be mendy (with awb on bench) + hazard for two weeks

    1. Bggz

    Hennessey
    Alonso Robertson W-B
    Salah Rich Maddison Pereyra
    Aguero Zaha King

    Hamer Doherty Mendy Gunnarsson
    1 FT, 3.3 ITB

Already set to do Kun out for Kane(C), then WC before GW9. Would it be crazy to take a hit to bring in Arnie for King or maybe a Man Utd defender for Mendy? Something else perhaps?

I would say he is. Team has been a lot better since he's been in it. The only changes the last 3 has been Arnie in and out when he's been injured. Also think Wilshere threatens Nobles place when he is back rather than Obiangs
