Meet the Manager #3 – Will Thomas

Will Thomas is among Fantasy Football’s rare polymaths, with the ability to excel in two different formats, Fantasy Premier League and Sky Fantasy Football.

In FPL he has five top 10,000 finishes including overall ranks of 753 and 82, while on Sky he has breached the top 100 on four occasions.

But as Will explains in our latest Meet the Manager video interview, juggling two different formats can have its pitfalls as well as its advantages.

He chats to me about his strategies for success and how to achieve a top finish. We also look back on his 2017/18 campaign, in which hedging his picks across two formats cost him dearly in FPL.

In addition, he reveals how Sky’s patient approach, due to limited transfers, as well as its focus on fixtures with multiple captaincy selections allowed, has helped Will to excel across most of his FPL career.

Will’s views on the current season also prove illuminating, including why managers need to take advantage of an unusually high number of budget gems this term.

He also reveals why he is shunning Harry Kane and is instead pinning his hopes for success on another, far cheaper, striker.

With a current FPL rank of 26,711, he looks to be already on his way to another strong season.

    Who would you rather have in your team for the next 4 GWs?

    A) Mane - MCI, hud, CAR, ars
    B) Aguero - liv, BUR, tot, SOU

    Trying to decide whether I should get rid of Aguero for free to get Kane, or Mane (and Wilson) for a -4 to get Kane.

      Mane but I dont think its a fair comparison. You should have both (or at least both a City and a Liverpool big hitter) from gw9

        Probably, but it's difficult to fit in Salah unless I downgrade Kane/Aguero/Hazard.
        And Mane hasn't been in very good form either so it might make sense to get rid of him to bring in Kane even if Mane has good fixtures coming up.
        I'm also considering the fact that I'll probably never captain Mane, whereas Aguero is a serious captaincy option in home games.

            I dunno, it would feel strange for me to captain Mane when Salah gets many more goal attempts / creates more chances. Of course I don't have Salah, but I like captaining the most likely player to get attacking returns (e.g. Hazard at Chelsea, Aguero at City, Kane at Spurs)

          7 GWs into the season and Mane has 6 more pts than Salah.
          Obviously Salah has better underlying stats, but he was also subbed off early vs Chelsea when they were chasing the game whereas Klopp kept Mane on.

            Mane doesn't score hat tricks. And you did ask for specific fixtures. If Liverpool score 5, Salah is more likely to be involved in 2-3 than Mane.

    Anyone tempted with a Jimenez, Mitrovic and Arnie front line.?

    It allows a strong midfield and can cover city with KDB and also allows an extra premium defender like Mendy.

          I think he will at some point (maybe a pick up in Jesus' form) although plan to wait until it actually happens.

    Hi.

    Back to the captaincy conundrum, Cardiff's away def stats are actually pretty similar to Southamptons home def stats. Games were (bou, hud, che) vs (BUR, LEI, BHA).

    Southampton also have a horrific bias for conceding chances down the inaide left channel at home.

    Might not be so clear cut.

            Understandable. I have 2 FT and am considering ditching Walcott, Dilva and Zaha for a hit to bring in Kane. I really don't want him other than Cardiff though and think the transfers could be spent in other ways for long term planning. Would be a shame to miss a massive Kane haul though.

        You can't keep Tottenham Wingbacks unless you can tolerate Trippier playing only against the best opponents and Champions League while Aurier gets the cupcake games. To keep Trippier "rested"

      Hazard as he is on form and should get a goal, but seems to be much better at home so you could be brave and go Vardy as he is at home and loves goals against the bigger teams. Not Lucas.
