As expected, Harry Kane was at the centre of Fantasy Premier League drama as Spurs beat Cardiff at Wembley.

After being heavily backed as the best captain candidate for Gameweek 8, he served up just one point.

We’ve got more details on why that happened and all the other FPL talking points from the match in this latest edition of Scout Notes.

Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 Cardiff City

Goals: Eric Dier (£4.8m)

Assists: Davinson Sánchez (£5.8m)

Harry Kane (£12.5m) let down his 380,000+ new owners by recording just one FPL point in Tottenham’s 1-0 win over Cardiff. The forward spent a lot of time dropping deep and, according to our Members Area, his average position for the match was nearer to the centre-circle than the penalty area. Even Lucas Moura (£7.4m) and Erik Lamela (£6.4m) registered average positions closer to the Cardiff goal than Kane.

He still had more shots than anyone else at Wembley on Saturday afternoon, but Moura outperformed him for efforts inside the box. Three of Kane’s team-mates registered more touches in Cardiff’s box too, two of whom played fewer minutes than him. With Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal on Tottenham’s schedule in the next six Gameweeks, many of those who signed Kane for Gameweek 8 may be looking to immediately remove him from their squads.

England’s captain was not the only underperformer for Spurs, who did not look like they were in control of the match throughout. They were sloppy in midfield and their poor passing, in the absence of Christian Eriksen (£9.2m), Dele Alli (£9.0m) and Mousa Dembélé (£4.9m), allowed Cardiff to spend large spells camped in the Spurs half. The Bluebirds’ tactic of high pressure on Spurs certainly had its desired effect.

“Being honest we need to improve a lot. We need to kill the games and have more control. We need to be calm. When you’re at home you must control the game. I am happy, the effort was fantastic and it wasn’t easy after the defeat to Barcelona.” – Mauricio Pochettino

Son Heung-min (£8.3m) was another Spurs asset to disappoint. He had just two efforts on goal and has now gone 18 matches without a goal for his club. Furthermore, he was taken off in the 72nd minute when manager Mauricio Pochettino was still chasing goals.

Danny Rose (£5.8m) was withdrawn with a groin injury in the closing stages, and still needs to be assessed.

“It was the same as it was after Huddersfield, a problem in (Rose’s) groin. He felt it again. Hope that nothing important but of course we need to assess. He needs to go to the national team and see what happened. He needs to check in with the national team.” – Mauricio Pochettino

The Gameweek 7 injury to Jan Vertonghen (£6.0m) allowed Davinson Sánchez (£5.8m) to make his second successive start. He demonstrated his set-piece threat once again, his first-half shot leading to Eric Dier‘s (£4.8m) goal. That was his second assist of the season.

Cardiff showed off some neat approach play but it was another match where a distinct lack of quality in the final third was obvious. Junior Hoilett (£5.2m) was the prime example of the problem, as he found himself in great positions down the left-wing on multiple occasions and still failed to deliver. He was reticent to use his left-foot, consistently looking to cross with the outside of his right or attempting to cut inside, all with little success.

Utility man Callum Paterson (£5.2m) was deployed up front and did cause Spurs some problems with his hold-up play. He set up several decent chances for Cardiff, with Hoilett and Josh Murphy (£4.8m) going close. Hoilett was especially unlucky not to score a first-half equaliser as Toby Alderweireld (£5.9m) produced an exceptional block on the line. However, the fact that Neil Warnock has now named five different options at centre-forward in eight league matches is indicative of the attacking problems facing the Cardiff manager.

Sean Morrison (£4.9m) proved his goal threat from set-pieces yet again and he nearly scored in the 63rd minute with a back-post header from a free-kick. Hugo Lloris (£5.4m), back in the side for the first time since Gameweek 3, kept the Spurs clean sheet intact with a great save. That allowed the brave Fantasy managers who captained Kieran Trippier (£6.2m) to collect a 14-point haul, thanks to a shut-out and a bonus point.

Warnock and Kane’s owners were dealt a blow in the 58th minute when Joe Ralls (£4.8m) was sent off for a foul on Moura. It was a wild and cynical challenge, which stopped a dangerous Spurs break, but was still 40-yards from the Cardiff goal. Naturally, Warnock was incensed by the decision, especially with Kane getting involved in the aftermath. His reaction earned the Spurs man a yellow card.

“I was disappointed. All afternoon there were plenty of busy people around him. He said it was a group decision. I don’t think Mike Dean needs earplugs to tell him what to do. He’s a top ref. I don’t think 15 white shirts around him helped.” – Neil Warnock

“(Kane) plays for England and is a top player, I love him, but I don’t think you should try and get other pros sent off. He’s the England captain for goodness sake. He didn’t need to do that. Just because Kane was having a poor game himself. He was determined to score today because we’re the only Premier League side he’s not scored against, but I thought our centre-backs handled him well.” – Neil Warnock

FPL midfielder Danny Ward (£4.5m) made another appearance as a striker, this time coming on for Paterson. However, he had to be substituted minutes later with a calf injury.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR XI (4-3-3): Lloris; Rose (Davies 88′), Sánchez, Alderweireld, Trippier; Winks, Dier, Sissoko (Wanyama 85′); Lucas, Kane, Son (Lamela 72′).

CARDIFF CITY XI (4-2-3-1): Etheridge, Bennett, Morrison, Bamba, Manga; Ralls, Arter; Hoilett, Camarasa, Hoilett (Harris 78′); Paterson (Ward 78′, Reid 84′).

    1. Trippier or Mendy? I’m on a WC and Aurier is on his way back, as is Mendy

I agree, but it's like wow, what the hell am i doing wrong season after season? Just can't see it, i play seriously, yet can't ever stay at a decent rank. A lot will change after tomorrow's games sure, but it still annoys me, just don't know how people do it.

          Sorry Zico,
My rank is not much better than yours either. Don't worry, this game is all about luck and avoiding chasing points.
I used to take hits all the time chasing the next best thing. Sometimes if you just leave the team alone you get better results.
Make sure you have a cheap bench and mixture of big hitters and some lesser known players who don't have European games to tire them out.

I've got players from 12 different teams. No Arsenal or Man Utd. Get a wolves player in. Cheap and hungry for success.

That's ok, and i've realised i've taken a few more hits than i presumed, but i thought they were all worthy and most have paid off.
I do have a cheap bench, but i only have more or les teh same players as every good performing FPL team.
Don't have any Utd, or Arsenal.

Think i may just hand over my team to someone and pay them to take charge of it lol

            https://fantasy.premierleague.com/a/entry/47131/history

Just going with the rolling template/community q&a team will give a reasonable rank most years, but it's boring. If you choose the template you can never outperform the template. If you choose differentials there's a high probability you'll underperform the template.

Was 7k at start of the gw and kinda miffed I didn't get Doherty (had a ft but thought Shaw would do well)

I've learnt that a early WC is the best strategy to do well (gw2 even). Back performing players (even if they haven't hauled big yet - had capt Haz and Fraser when they hauled) and capt the most popular player. No hits unless I can't put out a strong team (took a hit for Alli and Lloris when they got injured for Haz and Hennessy)

Other than that I'm quite safe

I was 2,5k 2 seasons ago using these principles

I 'll take note of this cheers GG. I missed out on the Fraser haul and didn't capt Haz when he hauled. I'm yet to have a captain fail yet though, and i have a strong team, all the more mindboggling as to what i'm doing wrong.

I'm at 113k, was 147k before the game week started and I am happy with that at this stage, could be better but could be worse. It is way too early in the season to judge, 31 weeks to go yet, same as prem, table means little this early. I have noticed there is little difference between the ranks from what people are posting and will change so much in the next few weeks. It is not worth the worry this early.

Just try not to worry about it, time spent worrying about something is time wasted and makes situations seem much worse than they are. If you start 2nd guessing your decisions you will make more mistakes. Best advice is to always follow your gut instincts, your mind gets confused from so much information from so many sources. I find when i follow my gut and I am wrong I don't feel that bad about the lost points or bad transfer, and feels great when right. Just don't let it bother you mate, sooooo long to go yet, so much will happen, just enjoy the ride! Good luck for the season!

No worries mate. I find it's helpful to take in all this information to see varying opinions and try to watch as many games/extended highlights (not just MOTD) as you can. But make all your decisions when you have time to think properly like when out walking for example and you don't have things distracting you. Makes thinking so much easier. Haz could easily get a few tomorrow, well I am hoping as I have him as captain as well.

It's ok, People should help each other instead of laughing at their mistakes or calling them stupid or casuals like some do on here. That is a perfect time to have a think and make decisions, when your out walking your dog by a lake or river. I find my mind is at its clearest when in places like that with nice scenery. Never make a decision in front of a screen, so hard to think with the TV on or looking at a gadget! Way too much information coming at you, and the screen light does no't help, sun light much better. I can't wait for tomorrows game, got a good feeling, Haz looks great so far, will score another wonder goal!!

A lot of people on here started with very similar template teams which performed well GW1 and 2. Those that didn’t WC’d early to similar teams. I got to 20k by week two and slowly up to 8k with 2 hits and no chips. So it really came down to having the right players at the very beginning. I took a 8 point hit this week to cater for the fixture swings and it’s backfired so far, dropped to 20k. If your players are the same as everyone on here then you should be climbing OR most weeks.

Yeah i agree with all what you say, it is about getting on the right players from the start, guess most were unlucky with KDB like myself as well.
I should be climbing the ranks with the same team but not doing, this is why it gets frustrating.

The only thing I do differently than all the experts advise is I don’t carry bench fodder. Having said that I just brought in billing. But for example in GW3 my cheapest player was 5.5m and on my bench were Maddison, Richarlison and PVA. I prefer to have a strong set of outfield players and bench them based on fixtures. It doesn’t always work though, week one I scored 86 but had mendy (15pts) on the bench.

A lot of teams are very similar atm so it will be more difficult to make up huge ground until the template changes. At this stage it is important to play sensibly and not make any rash decisions.
Predicting template changes or evolution is obviously the best way to gain ground.
Doherty will be massively owned now so maybe doubling up with Jonny or Patricio is one way of exploiting Wolves assets and gaining on the masses.
Getting on 3 Liverpool next week should be an advantage over most players too.
Play the fixtures and you will do well.

He noticed his mistakes very quickly and reacted to them straight away. It's why he is better than most of us.

That's why I'm only bringing in Patricio for now, I'll let him play the next two and then look to upgrade Hamer to Fabianski. They rotate very nicely.

When you're backing the premium defenders there's no need to swap to Doherty.
Doherty, Jonny, the wingers and Jimenez are our main attackers so if we don't keep a clean sheet but we score goals there's every chance they'll be involved.
We haven't played well the last couple of matches but we've managed to grind out two wins, so take from that what you will.

I have the exact same defence as you and I've found it frustrating avoiding Docherty in as a means of not having to bench or get rid of alonso/Robertson/Trippier. Casuals in my MLs get him in because FFS tells them to, they save loads of money and get tonnes of points, while my guys pick up 2 pointers. It's making a big difference.

My rationale is that the run wolves are on (i.e. clean sheets and wing back attacking returns) isn't sustainable and I'm hoping managers keep playing them for longer than they should. I rarely need to use transfers on my defence which is nice.

I will be quite happy with 100k rank at this stage of the season. Like many said there are still alot of games to come and chips to play. You should be able to close 30-50 pts gap from now till season end.

I am not a top player (10k last year, 27k the year before, currently on 33k), but below are some key things I do to improve my game:

      1. Try to be patient and plan for 5-8 weeks ahead. FTs are valuable - have a look at top players game history using FPL statistico, most good players can average 2 pts immediate gain from FT. Try to minimise hits - have a look at FPL discovery excellent research, most top 10k players dont use more than 3-4 hits a season.

      2. Make rational decisions based on expected value analysis over the long term. I try to aim for 55 ppg (before captaincy), that should lead to a good total score to get into top 10k (hopefully I can do it this season!). Every transfer decision is aimed at maximising my team ppg over 5-8 gameweeks.

      3. Understand how to maximise team ppg with a 11 playing budget of ~83m for my entire team.

      4. Keep a flexible team structure with good alternatives for each price pts, to manage any mishaps and unnecessary transfers.

I am trying to improve and be a better player, hope the above is helpful to you too.

I did the same as you and had planned to get him back after IB. However not sure now. Don't want to get a 12.8 player back in if he is bang out of form. Getting subbed early, shooting in to the upper stands, dodgy shot/pass decision making, I need to see something against City to convince me. This is now conflated by :

      - Mendy return (for me he is a must have if back and on form again)
      - KDB back at 9.7 (if straight back in form, again for me a must have at that price)

We've got two weeks to decide though, see what internationals throw up in the way of injuries too.

Wait till tomorrow for salah, personally think he's been awful as a pool supporter. Not even in comparison to last season just in general. Don't think he'll warrant his price this season, be more focused on Liverpool's defence they've only conceded 3 goals

Not sure if I want to change my defence of Alonso Robbo Doherty Dummet AWB. Except AWB, they all have got nice fixtures.

But with those juicy fixtures and as Liverpool is 2nd best attack in the league overall, I guess Salah has to score regularly now?

Mane has that drive in him, hes a season keeper.
Salah looks too tired and heavily marked. Wait for 2nd half of the season when teams drop thier guard against him, it will be time to get him in.

Nice team, but i will consider moving
      dummet > shaw
      Knockeart > brooks?

Spreading my risk around, if im playing a wing back on a “under the radar” team it would be utd.

Knockeart is a fighter but his age and legs are gonna show from here on, hes gonna get those alittle niggling injuries.

Get quaner out of there for jose...?

      1. Dušan Citizen
        • 12 Years
        7 years, 10 months ago

Dummet has nice fixtures ahead, I think he can bring some cleanies. I think the only change in the defence would be to get rid of AWB as his fixture turn awful.

Just bought Knockeart this GW, gonna give him some chance.

The only dilemma is should I get one of BOU forwards for Quaner or Salah for Silva or Rich. What do you think?

So didn't do Salah & Ings to Madison & Kane (C) or change my team due to alcohol related amnesia 😉

My 2 rivals both transferred out Ageuro for Kane who they captained. They have both benched Robertson and neither have both Mane & Salah. I'm now rubbing my hands in anticipation of a high scoring Liverpool v Man City game with Sergio (C), Mane, Salah and Robertson getting hauls later today.

I'm currently looking at this WC draft:

    Arnie, Jimenez, Mitro

I saw the Spurs match live and I was shouting at the telly what are you doing back there Kane you gobsh1te he looked like a poor man's Wayne Rooney.
He did not look right at all and if he did go into the box he would have done better then Lucas.
I don't understand the thinking of M Poch. He seems to be making it complicated for the sake of it.
Also Spurs were very slow moving the ball, they keep going side to side, backwards.
Made it easy for Cardiff to defend.
Maybe Spurs were pretending it was a Champions League game and practicing for that?

        Thanks.
It is bad. No movement whatsoever basically standing still.
It is a criminal use of a player of his quality.
Hopefully it won't be tried again because he was that poor.
I don't mind him dropping back occasionally, but to stay there is baffling.

        Very good point.
I had forgotten about him not playing.
That makes a little bit more sense now at least.
But, it was against 10 men of Cardiff - most teams would work the ball wide at speed and run them ragged.
        Spurs not capable of that?
Maybe they should get Aaron Lennon back from Burnley!?

It's easier to double up on the flanks when there is little creative theat centrally.
I doubt Warnock was too worried about Sissoko in the hole.
