As expected, Harry Kane was at the centre of Fantasy Premier League drama as Spurs beat Cardiff at Wembley.

After being heavily backed as the best captain candidate for Gameweek 8, he served up just one point.

We’ve got more details on why that happened and all the other FPL talking points from the match in this latest edition of Scout Notes.

Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 Cardiff City

Goals: Eric Dier (£4.8m)

Assists: Davinson Sánchez (£5.8m)

Harry Kane (£12.5m) let down his 380,000+ new owners by recording just one FPL point in Tottenham’s 1-0 win over Cardiff. The forward spent a lot of time dropping deep and, according to our Members Area, his average position for the match was nearer to the centre-circle than the penalty area. Even Lucas Moura (£7.4m) and Erik Lamela (£6.4m) registered average positions closer to the Cardiff goal than Kane.

He still had more shots than anyone else at Wembley on Saturday afternoon, but Moura outperformed him for efforts inside the box. Three of Kane’s team-mates registered more touches in Cardiff’s box too, two of whom played fewer minutes than him. With Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal on Tottenham’s schedule in the next six Gameweeks, many of those who signed Kane for Gameweek 8 may be looking to immediately remove him from their squads.

England’s captain was not the only underperformer for Spurs, who did not look like they were in control of the match throughout. They were sloppy in midfield and their poor passing, in the absence of Christian Eriksen (£9.2m), Dele Alli (£9.0m) and Mousa Dembélé (£4.9m), allowed Cardiff to spend large spells camped in the Spurs half. The Bluebirds’ tactic of high pressure on Spurs certainly had its desired effect.

“Being honest we need to improve a lot. We need to kill the games and have more control. We need to be calm. When you’re at home you must control the game. I am happy, the effort was fantastic and it wasn’t easy after the defeat to Barcelona.” – Mauricio Pochettino

Son Heung-min (£8.3m) was another Spurs asset to disappoint. He had just two efforts on goal and has now gone 18 matches without a goal for his club. Furthermore, he was taken off in the 72nd minute when manager Mauricio Pochettino was still chasing goals.

Danny Rose (£5.8m) was withdrawn with a groin injury in the closing stages, and still needs to be assessed.

“It was the same as it was after Huddersfield, a problem in (Rose’s) groin. He felt it again. Hope that nothing important but of course we need to assess. He needs to go to the national team and see what happened. He needs to check in with the national team.” – Mauricio Pochettino

The Gameweek 7 injury to Jan Vertonghen (£6.0m) allowed Davinson Sánchez (£5.8m) to make his second successive start. He demonstrated his set-piece threat once again, his first-half shot leading to Eric Dier‘s (£4.8m) goal. That was his second assist of the season.

Cardiff showed off some neat approach play but it was another match where a distinct lack of quality in the final third was obvious. Junior Hoilett (£5.2m) was the prime example of the problem, as he found himself in great positions down the left-wing on multiple occasions and still failed to deliver. He was reticent to use his left-foot, consistently looking to cross with the outside of his right or attempting to cut inside, all with little success.

Utility man Callum Paterson (£5.2m) was deployed up front and did cause Spurs some problems with his hold-up play. He set up several decent chances for Cardiff, with Hoilett and Josh Murphy (£4.8m) going close. Hoilett was especially unlucky not to score a first-half equaliser as Toby Alderweireld (£5.9m) produced an exceptional block on the line. However, the fact that Neil Warnock has now named five different options at centre-forward in eight league matches is indicative of the attacking problems facing the Cardiff manager.

Sean Morrison (£4.9m) proved his goal threat from set-pieces yet again and he nearly scored in the 63rd minute with a back-post header from a free-kick. Hugo Lloris (£5.4m), back in the side for the first time since Gameweek 3, kept the Spurs clean sheet intact with a great save. That allowed the brave Fantasy managers who captained Kieran Trippier (£6.2m) to collect a 14-point haul, thanks to a shut-out and a bonus point.

Warnock and Kane’s owners were dealt a blow in the 58th minute when Joe Ralls (£4.8m) was sent off for a foul on Moura. It was a wild and cynical challenge, which stopped a dangerous Spurs break, but was still 40-yards from the Cardiff goal. Naturally, Warnock was incensed by the decision, especially with Kane getting involved in the aftermath. His reaction earned the Spurs man a yellow card.

“I was disappointed. All afternoon there were plenty of busy people around him. He said it was a group decision. I don’t think Mike Dean needs earplugs to tell him what to do. He’s a top ref. I don’t think 15 white shirts around him helped.” – Neil Warnock

“(Kane) plays for England and is a top player, I love him, but I don’t think you should try and get other pros sent off. He’s the England captain for goodness sake. He didn’t need to do that. Just because Kane was having a poor game himself. He was determined to score today because we’re the only Premier League side he’s not scored against, but I thought our centre-backs handled him well.” – Neil Warnock

FPL midfielder Danny Ward (£4.5m) made another appearance as a striker, this time coming on for Paterson. However, he had to be substituted minutes later with a calf injury.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR XI (4-3-3): Lloris; Rose (Davies 88′), Sánchez, Alderweireld, Trippier; Winks, Dier, Sissoko (Wanyama 85′); Lucas, Kane, Son (Lamela 72′).

CARDIFF CITY XI (4-2-3-1): Etheridge, Bennett, Morrison, Bamba, Manga; Ralls, Arter; Hoilett, Camarasa, Hoilett (Harris 78′); Paterson (Ward 78′, Reid 84′).

    Hi All,

Took a -8 to get Kane in and triple captained him so now I 100% want him out! Looking at doing the below:

Lerma and Kane to Sterling and Murray.

Will give me a 15 of:

    Steklenberg, Ederson.
    AWB, Bennet, Duffy, Robertson, Alonso.
    Fraser, Richarlison, Maddison, Sterling, Hazard.
    Murray, Mitrovic, Aguero.

    Am I mad?

      Mad?
The madness was spending 8 points to bring in Kane and triple captaining him. I'd have said that even if he'd got a brace.

Bit late now to worry about that though isn’t it? Only thing stopping me is Kane will always start where as Sterling is prone to rotation

          Very true in fairness.

I'd keep him a week and then swap out for a premium mid, fine free.
I'm not big on spending points for moves.

Sorry about the triple captain mate. Agree with Robben, since you invested so much in Kane, may as well see if he pays off against West Ham. May be a good differential as many are ditching Kane.

Still young though. But too many faults to be in the top bracket for keepers, good shot stopper, effective when teams base their play on counter as he has a good long range capacity in kicking the ball. But on the other areas he is mediocre and he doesn´t command his defense like Alisson, Buffon etc.

Good Morning all. Been thinking about pulling the WC out but my team has been nicely ticking over each week. Would you WC this team?

    Patricio - Hamer
    Alonso - Robertson - Trippier - Pereria - AWB
    Salah - Hazard - Richarlison - Fraser - Cairney
    Kun - Arnie - Quaner

    *apologies for the long post*

Just looking at the fixtures to decide when its a good time to WC:
    - West ham: great fixtures from gw10 for arnie and fabianski. Gw15 is also a good entry point before their good home fixtures
    - Brighton: great fixtures from gw10 till gw17 for defenders.
    - Man united: Gw19 a good entry point with 4 out of 6 great home fixtures
    - Spurs: Amazing fixtures from gw15
    - Liverpool: Good fixtures till gw17 but can get rid in gw15 to coincide with spurs fixtures
    - Chelsea: Good fixtures till gw23
    - Newcastle: great fixtures till 19 for yedlin perhaps
    - Leicester: great fixtures till gw15/16
    - Everton: Great fixtures from gw19
    - Arsenal/Man city: No clear batch of good/bad fixtures

So based on above, i should either WC in gw10 or gw15
    - Gw10 will allow me to change my gk rotation, bring in hazard (at expense of kane), get rid of richarlison and my benchfodder mids, get rid of king

-Gw15 will allow me to get rid of robbo/salah for trippier/kane, get rid of maddison by then.

So there are merits for both. Main issue is lack of hazard in gw10 which i can easily solve by doing richarlison/kane >> hazard/arnie who i would have wanted on my WC. Similarly, for gw15, i can drop salah for kane. What else would you consider when looking at when to employ a WC?

    Current team is:
    Patricio -- Foster
Alonso Robbo Shaw Doherty -- Awb
Salah Rich Maddison -- Camarassa Stephens
    Kane Kun King

Sorry for the long post i think it really helped me clarify what i want. i will WC in gw10 get change my attacker but more importantly, my gk rotation breaks down from gw10 and i will change my team from a 433 to a different formation. The attackers can be brought in anytime, the biggest benefit of wildcard of changing my benchfodders

    1. SADIO SANÉ
      • 10 Years
      7 years, 4 months ago

I'd wildcard when you have at least 3 dud defenders (due to form or fixtures) and 2/3 terrible mids/fwds. But, you should be able to get Hazard for Kane fairly easily, then there's not much to change there imo.

Get that Shaw out.. no seriously, i would monitor the situation with Mourinho, as long as they play like they do now Shaw is not a good pick.

I´m not sure you need to wc in 10, as saving a transfer now will give you 2 free transfers then. If you take a miniwc (-4) you have a lot of options to change both players but also formation. Personally, if going for 3-4-3 i would shift Stephens out and leave Camarasa in, as the latter have some freekick duties, and Cardiff do have threath on set pieces. Stephens just beeing a card magnet with absolutely no goal threath.

whenever you feel the need in your team to do it, i think you made a good point about gw15. It´s difficult to give advice on when to wc as there are so many factors to consider, i did it before GW7, not because i had to because of injuries/suspensions but because i wanted to do 4 or 5 changes to my team, and to change formation as i had a little bit of issue with my 5 midfield strategy.

    Just seen MOTD.

Vardy got many chances. Pereira and Chilwell look dangerous and Maguire look likely to score at corner-kick.
Not get many interest when TAA is cheaper and 0.1-0.2 more expensive than those full-backs though.

    Btw, Siggy's goal was class.

    Thinking about the following moves:

Alonso, Richarlison, Kane > TAA, KDB, Kun for - 8

Really want city Coverage and trying to max out on Pool assets, also have Salah and Robertson. No hits so far and ranked in top 1500

    Would appreciate some opinions

I suggest you check the fixtures once more

Arsenal away is not that bad a fixture for Wolves or Pool. And Wolves v Spurs, can see the former win too. No need to get rid of them for that as they have lots of great fixtures around those games

Had Salah and Aguero from the start of the season, my only captained players until this week. The hardest part of this game is to not make any changes really. Anyone else who usually get of to a good start, then soon have to wildcard to get back a similar team you started the season with?

Rate my wildcard draft, deciding to be a bit different:

    Patricio
    TAA, Robertson, Alonso, Mendy
    Salah, Sterling, Hazard
    Arnie, Mitro, Jimenez

    4.0, Doherty, 2 x 4.5 mids

Thoughts? Can easily bring in Aguero/Kane/etc with 2 transfers, I think Sterling can do the business.

I can't believe the amount of people that benched Wolves defenders. Palace haven't scored at home all season and Wolves are in great form with 3 CS in last 4 before yesterday.

I know it's easy to say now what people should have done but the recent data supported a Wolves CS.

I didn't think there would be many goals, and thought either team could have nicked it. Went for AWB over Bennett as had Pat in net. Still kicking myself though

Could of gone either way to be fair. The home non-scoring record is what pushed me to play Bennett over AWB.

    Pat (Hart)
    Robbo, Alonso, Shaw (AWB, Peltier)
    Salah, Hazard, Fraser, Bilva (Stephens)
    Aguero, Mitro, Zaha

Thinking most important players to shift this week are:
Zaha and Peltier -> King or Wilson and Doherty???

Don’t know what I was thinking on my GW6 WC buying Smalling over Trippier - probably my worst call playing this game ever!

Would you do the following for -4

    Ederson / Shaw / Nerves
    to
    Patricio / Mendy / Mendy 0.5ITB

    This gives me

    Patricio
    Trip / Alonso / Mendy / Robbo
    Salah / Haz / Richarlison / Fraser
    Aguero / Mitrovic

    4.0 / Mendy / WanB / 4.4

The idea is I upgrade my 4.0 GK to Fabianski to enhance squad depth.

I agree. I view it differently though....I see it that he is still getting returns (particularly at home) and has one or two levels to go. I concur that he needs to up his game though....I just feel he is one good game away from exploding again

The issue with Wolves defence performing so well when you’re doubled up with Patricio and Doherty is that you know they will blank next gameweek now.

I don’t know the psychological term for this, but any owners doubling up next week? I sort of have to looking at my team on paper but I can almost guarantee that they’ll both blank next gameweek which is the tough part..
