A week has passed since Harry Kane‘s (£12.5m) blank in Tottenham Hotspur’s 1-0 win over Cardiff City and the one-point return still rankles for those of us who backed the England striker with the captaincy in Gameweek 8.

Having been bought by over 380,000 Fantasy Premier League managers ahead of the Cardiff match, Kane now sits in around 31% of FPL squads at the time of writing and many Fantasy bosses will be wondering what to do with their premium forward in the weeks ahead – particularly given the fixtures Spurs have in the short term.

Our Scout Notes touched on Kane’s frustrating tendency to drop deep in the win over the Bluebirds and this positional analysis is something we have decided to explore in more depth for this latest members’ article.

On my WC and can't decide between these 2 combo

    A) Mendy Knockaert Murray
    B) Balbuena Richarlison Arnie

Rest of the team is farly settled and looks like this

    Ryan Button
    Robbo Alonso Doherty AWB
    Hazard Sterling Fraser Maddison
    Kun Mitro

      - Mendy probably better than Balbuena
      - Richarlison better than Knock
      - Arnautovic better than Murray

    Ederson - Hamer
    Wan-Bissaka - Robertson - Doherty - Alonso - Steve Cook
    Fraser - Salah - Maddison - Hazard - Stephens
    Kane - Mitrović - Kamara

Suggestions for this team? I have one free transfer and £1.2 in the bank. Kane out, maybe?

Upgrading Stephens and downgrading Kane looks the way to go. Something like Aguero and Richarlison would be nice IMO.

All the stats in the world can't compare to the painful eye test of watching him drop deep in ineffective areas. Reminds me a lot of when Rooney decided to drop deep and try link up play. Combined that with how spurs just don't look to be clicking right now...

I'm contemplating dropping Alonso. Slightly mixed fixtures, I got him at a high value and his attacking returns have dried up. I know it'll backfire on me as I do this every year, but downgrading him to someone like Robertson means I can upgrade King to Arnie.

    Thoughts?

Did you expect his attacking returns to eclipse Hazard’s?

He has more attacking returns that Arnie.

Do you really expect a defender to get a goal or an assist week in week out? He’s averaging an attacking return in 75% of the games he’s played.

Oh not at all. But now that Hazard is firing, I just wonder if he's enough Chelsea cover and whether, with this run and no team value to worry about, Robertson is better for the next few weeks.

It’s about that time, when Alonso goes more than 3-4 games without an attacking return, people get itchy trigger fingers.

Then when he scores/assists again they have to try to get him back in.

He's not so attacking as he was in the first three fixtures anymore. But I wouldn't get rid as Chelsea has some nice fixtures after United.

    For the season....

    Mane and Alonso or
    Salah and Bennett?

Common sense says Mane and Alonso but there is still a little bit of me that is worried that if Salah can find something like the finishing from last year, he will be near essential!! Is there any way Mane could keep up??

What do people do on Sunday with no football? Getting warm in British museum or National Gallery?

      lacazette/vardy is bad idea imo

There are few natural replacements at that price point.
You can't release enough money from 1 player to upgrade any of your mids to salah or sterling if desired
I'm not quite sold on Laca as a captain choice yet, which leaves only Hazard imo

still don't like it. I just don't like those price strikers. you have to downgrade or upgrade if one gets injured or fails, which leaves a load of money burning hole or costs you two transfers. this is why I would only opt for 1 max, ideally the more expensive of the two

    3. WesMantooth
      • 15 Years
      8 years, 3 days ago

I'd own either Kun or Sterling.
With Laca (and Vardy) i'd opt for Sterling as both come with the value to make a "fairly easy" switch to a premium striker if necessary.

Double Leicester seems a bit much tbh, ID opt for only one.

      Maybe switch Vardy+Rich for Jim/Ings+Sterling?

Also think mendy should be part of any wc team, but not sure how you would go about getting him in.

AWB is just a cheap dud going forward. You could Get Someone more exciting at a fairly similar price.

I dont think so. Whoever you own instead will also be scoring points. But as it stands, owning 1 seems sensible. But the idea of those being a "must" will alter as soon as they start a game on the bench. If just a couple more of the pricey players start adding points to the board, cityassets wont be in such high demand as theyve been sofar.

The fact that premium players have been unreliable and Sterling and Kun have been the epitomy of reliability should tell you how essential they are. Set and forget.

I wonder if I really need a premium striker... the price to points ratio isn't that good. The only reason I have one is captaincy but really thinking about perma captaining Hazard this year as he looks like he could have similar season to the Salah's last one. If I for example transfer out Kane for Ings or Jimenez I can have almost whoever I like in the midfield and defence. For example such a team:

    Alonso - Robertson - Mendy - Laporte
Hazard - Salah - De Bruyne - Eriksen (when he's fit)
    Wilson - Ings

I really like it. More than the team I currently have.

      Looks good!

But so far this year, none of Salah, Eriksen and KDB have given enough output to defend their heavy price tags.
And of these, maby only Salah is worth captaining, if he starts to deliver on a regular base.

      1. Sgt Frank Drebin
        • 10 Years
        8 years, 3 days ago

Thanks, maybe I would try to squeeze Sterling in to cover Aguero captaincy. Hazard, Salah and Sterling looks like enough captaincy material to me, what do you think?

    2. Pacer.
      • 12 Years
      8 years, 3 days ago

I just can't see the point in releasing all that money from the strikers to invest it all in a near 13m midfielder who is disappointing and risky in almost every respect

I like the idea though and think if you choose the right midfielders there is no reason currently to need a premium striker

      1. Sgt Frank Drebin
        • 10 Years
        8 years, 3 days ago

Yeah thanks, that's just an example it's not necessarily has to looks like it. Maybe Doherty, Mane and Sterling would be even better than Laporte, Eriksen and Salah, I wasn't really thinking that much about it.

        1. Pacer.
          • 12 Years
          8 years, 3 days ago

I totally agree that would be better. Miles better.

Also I think ings is a bit of a risk because there are so few strikers at the price point. If he gets injured or doesn't fire you don't have many choices and it will cost you transfers or hits if you're not happy with those.

I would be looking at 2 x 7m strikers (e.g. mitro/arnie) if I were doing your plan as there's several options at that price point and a few below that price point. Easy rotation will be key if you are going without premium.

          1. Sgt Frank Drebin
            • 10 Years
            8 years, 3 days ago

Good point. Especially I think there would be a problem with Wilson I guess because I can replace Ings with Jimenez and for Wilson I would need to take hit. Ings I really fancy, he's got great stats and is on pens, only 5.7, looks great. But as I said I was thinking more about the team structure not certain picks. For example it could be even 4-5-1. It just an interesting idea, but I don't know if I will do it, ideally I would like to test how it's working first 😛

i think team structure will be key and that means picking players at price points that have several options so that you can just pick the one that is firing or hitting fixtures with a single FT

If he came out and hit a brace and got baps next week and looked confident then I would consider getting him in.

What ever you do you will need to plan to be able to get Kun or Kane if they look like they may have a big ownership and hattie on the way against a weak team ... if there are no other good Captain options that week

      1. Sgt Frank Drebin
        • 10 Years
        8 years, 3 days ago

If Kane starts playing further up the pitch and Spurs rediscover their form he will surely be needed for the their run of good fixtures. As for Kun I'm not sure. As far as he plays like in the couple of previous fixtures I don't think he's such a threat. For me the probability of a haul isn't that high. But I really think he's playing much better if he has Jesus playing alongside him in the 3-5-2. From what I remember he was much better option last year when they were playing with three at the back before Mendy got injured. But I may be wrong, don't remember it so well.

It wouldn't be mad to captain Haz this week with Man Utd's form. I would think about it if City didn't have such a good home fixture. They sometimes go nuts in these sorts of games and score 4/5 goals.

Haha. Fair enough. Would be such an easy decision if they were on form & firing.

I’m looking at a Maddison Kane > Salah Arnie -4 if Mo is declared fit.

      I do...

      Bego (Fab)
      Mendy AWB Bennett Alonso (Pereira)
      Haz Rich Fraser (Maddison Stephens)
      Kane Aguero (C) Mitro

      1 FT and 1.6 ITB

Thinking of holding my team for this GW though. Get some Poolattack next week for free....

Long term, I think that’s a good move. The problem with Kane is that short term, it could backfire if he braces v West Ham.

My other 2 strikers are Wilson and Jimenez.

Either of those 2 could make me look silly taking them out for a hit with the fixtures they have.

I believe Man City is key. Everyone is going mad for Liverpool but really there is quite a lot of doubts over Liverpool, and their fixtures, at least in the short term (next 3) are not the dream people think. BUR and SOT have conceded twice the number of goals away in the last 3 that HUD and CAR have at home and away. Liverpool is potentially fools gold imo

        Yeah, you could be right.

However, Huddersfield, Cardiff and Fulham in their next 4.

It doesn’t get juicier than that. Just because Cardiff managed to park a bus against Spurs, doesn’t mean it will work next time.
