Sergio Aguero (£11.3m) and Mohamed Salah (£12.8m) are thought to be the leading candidates for the Gameweek 9 captaincy.

They face Burnley and Huddersfield respectively, two rather favourable fixtures.

You can now vote in the latest captain poll either at the bottom of this article or on the side-bar of our home page.

The Manchester City man may have the advantage over Salah given that the Egyptian picked up a muscle injury over the international break.

The current thinking is that Salah’s knock is not too serious although Fantasy Premier League managers will still want to hear from Jurgen Klopp before making a final decision.

Meanwhile, Aguero was not involved over the international break at all, for the second time this season. Another rest for the Argentinian, after an ongoing injury problem, has some Fantasy managers hoping that manager Pep Guardiola won’t manage his minutes so often anymore.

Anyone still worried Aguero’s game-time may still consider one of his attacking colleagues in either Raheem Sterling (£11.1m), David Silva (£8.5m) or even Kevin De Bruyne (£9.7m) if Guardiola passes him fit. Man City does look a source of plenty of options this week as no team has allowed more shots on goal this season than Burnley.

Liverpool’s trip to Huddersfield still holds some promise though, so Sadio Mané (£9.9m) and Roberto Firmino (£9.3m) may also receive some attention in the poll, especially if Salah loses the fitness race.

Eden Hazard (£11.3m) faces a tougher fixture as Manchester United come to Stamford Bridge, but the Chelsea man may still get a look-in for the captaincy.

Only four teams have conceded more goals than the Red Devils in the last four Gameweeks, and they have been breached the same number of times as typically leaky Bournemouth and Huddersfield during that time.

Furthermore, Hazard still has just one blank in 2018/19 even managing to score against the transformed Liverpool defence in Gameweek 7.

Top differentials may still include Alexandre Lacazette (£9.6m) who increased his goal involvement tally for the season to eight in Gameweek 8. He and his Arsenal colleagues are at home against Leicester, a side they scored four goals past in last year’s corresponding fixture.

Richarlison (£6.8m) and Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.4m) may also receive outside considerations as Everton are in-form and host a struggling Crystal Palace side in Gameweek 9.

I am tempted by a LIV triple-up for the upcoming fixtures, but to do it I would have to ditch Salah in favour of Mane and Firmino. (Robbo the obvious third). Thoughts? Madness? A decent play?

If you triple up, have 2 defenders instead of forwards.

Don't think a tripple up is madness. I would do it if I could. But I think I would go with Robertson and Trent over Firmino and Mane

Not madness at all, Mane & Firmino should lead the lines in Salah absence

Any reason why Fernandez over Yedlin other than the 0.1? And is he nailed? (Thinking I will pick one up for my bench this GW if Salah is still a doubt).

    Serious dilemma

    Team 1

    Patricio
    Trippier Robertson Laporte Mendy
    Hazard Mane Wijnaldum
    Aguero Mitrovic Vardy

    Bench: Maddison Bennet Hojbjerg

    Team 2

    Patricio
    Trippier Robertson Mendy
    Hazard Mane Maddison Richarlison
    Aguero Mitrovic Vardy

    Bench: Bennet WB Hojbjerg

I am struggeling to sell Laporte because I can see him getting points consistely for cheap. Basically I can see a Laporte/Wijnaldum combo doing better than Richarlsion over the next few weeks as they rotate ver well.

    Help!

i.e. Laporte/Wijnaldum vs AWB/Richarlison. Will say that Wijnaldum has looked a lot better this season from games I've watched, but still wouldn't pick him in FPL. So Team 2 on the basis of Richarlison and already having Mendy.

Wijnaldum is used quite defensively by Klopp, might be more attacking if Salah is out though.

May be rotated though as him, Hendo, Keita, Fabinho, Milner (injured at the moment) all fighting for those 3 spots, even Shaqiri has played in this midfield 3.

2Fts and nothing obvious to do (unless Salah is confirmed out)

Shaw -> Bennett/Jonny a good shout to free up funds? It would make Doherty my third defender

      • 8 Years
      7 years, 10 months ago

Not the worst idea. Can't rely on United's defence at all if they can't keep a CS at home to Newcastle so you might as well promote Doherty ahead of him.

I'd be tempted to go Shaw -> Yedlin instead though to cover Doherty in GWs 11/12/15 when he has TOT/ars/CHE.

Yedlin has three decent home games in those weeks, and if you go to another Wolf you'll face the same issue.

They are fairly danger from free kicks and corners where VVD is dominating.Don't be blinded by statistics, Cardiff also scored just 4 goals this season - 2 vs ARS, 1 vs CHE and could easily score against TOT.

Is sterling the most overlooked player so far this season?

Being .3 cheaper than Aguero and with the glut of good value strikers this season should our money be in a 5 man midfield rather than Aguero plus one or two mid priced forwards?

Also a case for going 4 atb with double pool def (Robbo, TAA), Alonso/Mendy and the likes of Doherty to rotate with a 4th mid (Kennedy) ?
Could work out very well in the distant future.

The player has to be Salah with all the uncertainty around him as he would have been a lot of people’s go to captain choice

The team has to be Man City and what effect KDBs return will have on peoples thinking and does his return make Man City options more or less attractive

It would've been Salah if not for the injury concern. That might make any discussion moot. Sterling is far more interesting as he's priced high, has delivered very consistently and is also in direct competition with Salah & Mane for the big hitting mid slot.

      1. Mid priced Mids - Richarlison, Maddison, Fraser, Sig, Lucas Moura.. who is a must have?

      2. Liverpool - worth tripple up for the good fixtures? if so, how?

      3. Talk about players like Laporte.. are they worth keeping all season and playing 4 defenders (double up with Mendy). or go with only mendy and play 3 defenders. Same arguement with Trent & Robertson

For the talking point I'd quite like to hear the scouts thoughts on defensive structure for the long term. Firstly, would they favour 3,4 or 5 at the back? Secondly, what make up, ie. 3+ premiums, entirely cheap rotation defence, or a balanced approach somewhere between the 2?

In most seasons premium defenders offer predictable value according to fixture, however this season teams like Wolves could provide premium defender performance for a fraction of the price, enabling more spend further up the pitch.

Lacazette. Been going under the radar in the past few weeks but now everyone realises his appeal.
Liverpool. Salah to mane or a double up on defence has been causing confusion.
Fixture change - wolves defence still a good option? The likes of West Ham, Brighton, Newcastle have great fixtures - should we invest?

Also, it would be good if you could mention the IB wildcarders as having so much options and tinkering I’m getting confused and would like to know your opinions on great picks for the long term.

    13. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus

Player - KDB - what will his return mean for squad planning, especially given he is almost 9.5 now, is that price too good to be true.

Team - Liverpool - with Cardiff, Huddersfield, Fulham in their next 4, do you go big on their defence or attack or neither.

Talking point - fullbacks - is it time for a back 5 - especially with AWB’s horrific fixture list and Doherty’s emergence... Robbo, Alonso, Mendy, TAA, Doherty is a very playable back 5 - those 5 should keep pace with and even outscore most mids/fwds up to 7.0/8.0 but still allows 4 premium attackers due to TAA & Doherty’s price tags, and with many sub 6.0 (baseline price) attackers such as Ings, Jiminez, Fraser etc still allowing a strong squad, bench, and structural flexibility - if needed.

The Team: Newcastle with a mass of "easy" fixtures and relatively good defenders.
The Player: KDB, the impact to City and the players around him and when to buy.
The talking point should be looking at fixture changes and is there any real value in turning your team upside down.

      Teams:

      Talking point:
Wolves defence, have they been hugely overachieving defensively with 4 CS out of their last six, conceding just the one goal v City & another at Old Trafford over that run!

Sterling should be the player under discussion as he's being highly overlooked and the return of KDB might boost his prospects further

I'd like to know your thoughts on Arsenal as they have been going on a fine run, yet been under the radar so far.

Talking point: big hitters and captaincy, Aguero with limited mins, Salah of form, Kane play deep, should we stick to Hazard every week (nailed,on pens, doesn't have European duties, baps magnet -a 10 points for one goal),he could be close to last year Salah

Player - Aguero. Worth keeping with minutes being monitored and rotation

Team - Liverpool. Fixture swing. Treble up? Which 3 assets?

Talking Point - Frontline Value. Better to have 1 Premium and 2 Sub 7m FW's or are the 0.5m FW's starting to work there way into teams, e.g. Laca, Firmino, Vardy

Player: De Bruyne. Usually the most nailed points magnet in City's lineup, a snip at £9.7m and owned by next to nobody.

Team: Leicester. Fixtures too good to ignore (even Arsenal away). With both Pereira in attack and Maguire finding the net in recent weeks, is it time to triple up?

Talking Point: Template breakers. As the season marches on and the points stack up, the tougher it is to break the top 10k. Should managers start looking to likes of Sterling (5.4% ownership), Vardy (4.9%) or Sigurdsson (4.3%) to shake things up a bit?

Which player - Alonso and is a 4 match attacking blank period anything to be worried about? last season it was 7 or 8 games and he still clocked up a big total
Taking point - a playing and decent bench v taking hits ... the use of a decent bench seems largely ignored in the community with a preference for spending as much as possible on the starting 11 - is this a false economy when compared against taking hits ... is a playing bench worth more than spending the cash on the 11 players when hits couple be 40 or 50 points over a season ?

Robertson played 180 mins in IB, surely this is a chance to rest him?

Mane a good option now if you don’t have Salah?

If you’re selling Salah, who’d you rather get, sterling or mane?

Team: Arsenal - should we be on some of their players giving their long unbeaten run and goalscoring exploits
Talking Point 1: Fixture swing for Leicester, Newcastle, Brighton
Talking Point 2: xA and xG and aA and aG - particularly for players like Siggy, Richarlison, Maddison, Fraser, Auba - can they really keep up their FPL points given their xA and xG?

      Player/Talking point:

      Salah and Sterling

Is it worth keeping Salah if he’s 50-50 for the weekend?
If he’s fit everyone keeps and If he’s out for longer everyone will probably sell. But what if we don’t get definite answer?

Is Sterling the best replacement for Salah as he’s the closest to his price point and on form? Think Sterling is better than Mane?

Alonso - for one, I'm sick of hearing about Salah. I was glad David wrote an article because I had previously shown a heatmap comparison of 1-5 vs 6-8 to FPL Freddo on Twitter & it's a far more dramatic shift to a traditional fullback role which tallies with the eye test that Chelsea seem to have tightened up rather than allow a load of chances on goal and riding their luck. Admittedly, the latter selection of games includes Liverpool where, like vs City in the CS, they would have been more cautious but it appears to be a trend. If Alonso is only going to get CS's now - and he's played more defensively vs fodder like Cardiff and Southampton - can he really be a justified inclusion at 7M? There are plenty of cheap defenders who will get you CS's and if Chelsea are tightened up, you can even get in Luiz for a much better price.

actually I compared 1-6 vs 7-8 .. small sizes but a very dramatic change in positioning and attacking threat, much more so than on David's chosen time line.

How to handle Pool assets? Especially for those of us who are on their WC?

Which low budget defenders should we look at regarding the upcoming fixture swings?

Best keeper option from now on? Is Allison as a set and forget option a good idea? Missing cosistency in the offense and a great schedule call for pool defenders ...

    REPOST: Lost on last article.

Saw a post earlier on how many Dream team players people had so thought I would review the current Dream team.

    Ederson (43)
    Alonso (60) | Doherty (49) | Robertson (49)
    Hazard (74) | Sterling (50) | Fraser (48) | Mane (48)
    Aguero (52) | Wilson (49) | Lacazette (48)

    Total cost: £89.3 | Total points: 570

This team is currently not affordable with £10.7 remaining to purchase an additional 4 players; 1 x keeper, 2 x defenders and 1 x midfielders. You would need around £16.5 minimum to fill these positions, so some downgrades are needed, especially if you want an improved bench.

Goalkeeper: Ederson is certainly a good keeper that will do well in points but a cheaper keeper is often not that far behind by the end of the season. Ederson is £5.7 so you could save £1.1 by getting Patricio who has scored just 2 points less (41). As rotating keepers generally leads to points on the bench you can choose for a £4.0 keeper to save money.

Defense: Attacking premium defenders seem to be a must this season. Despite the recent dip Alonso (60) is still outscoring everyone but Hazard (74) so far. Would suggest patience. Robertson (49) is also scoring very well, again beating all other positions apart from Hazard, Sterling and Aguero. Doherty (49) offers a cut price route into a good defensive team and offers a lot of attacking threat, now scoring the same as Robertson! With Bennett and AWB at £4.2 and £4.3 respectively, you can afford to invest in the premium options.

Midfield: Hazard (74) is a must, expect this to be one of his highest scoring seasons and he is already leading the field in points. Sterling (50) is actually very much overlooked due to his price, with Salah struggling he is very much someone I am looking at. Fraser (48) remains a very good budget option, although patience will be required when he has poor fixtures, also expect Maddison or Sigurdsson will overtake soon as they are both on 42 points, so 6 points down. Mane (48) has dipped in output but currently is the highest scoring value pick from the Liverpool attackers, another Salah downgrade option.

Fowards: Aguero (52) is the top pick for points in City which is one of the most attacking teams, so for me remains in my team. Wilson (49) is doing great with the fixtures but these are turning soon as per Fraser, exit plan maybe required and mine is Arnautovic. Lacazette (48) is looking like a great choice too, just behind Wilson but much more likely to sustain his output, but at £9.6 he is difficult to fit into your team, again the Salah downgrade would make this easier.

TL;DR - I think a lot of the dream team players are worthy of being in your team, now and in the future. Attacking defenders are currently more than holding their own. The Bournemouth players might drop out of the dream team in the coming weeks, so players like Maddison, Sigurdsson and Arnautovic need to be monitored. Some expensive players like Sterling and Lacazette are worthy of investment if we are brave enough to drop Salah, otherwise the team structure could be an issue.

All good options, but unaffordable because of the excessive number of big-hitters.

Probably need to downgrade either Aguero or Sterling, and also either Mane or Lacazette.

If you want to include Salah then you will need to downgrade a few others too.

The most owned players in FPL are:
      Ederson (25.0%)
      Alonso (46.1%), Trippier (34.2%), Wan-Bissaka (30.2%), Robertson (27.6%)
      Hazard (47.5%), Mane (37.8%), Salah (32.8%)
      Aguero (50.5%), Kane (31.2%), Mitrovic (26.1%)

These would set you back £94.3m plus the cost of the bench. But of course no-one owns all of these players - a very reasonable and affordable team could be created simply by downgrading Salah and Kane.

Notice a lot of these highly owned players are not part of the Dream Team summary I provided, Kane and Trippier in particular. With Spurs current run of fixtures I would go without, Dream team with Doherty and Lacazette perhaps better alternatives in the short term and perhaps even long term considering the team balance.

Salah is the other one, swapping with Sterling is looking like a good move. If these 'differential' players continue to score more that the highly owned alternatives then lot's of green arrows can be expected.

Replacing Trippier, Kane and Salah with Doherty, Lacazette and Sterling would bring the cost down to £88.1m plus bench - £105.1m in total assuming a bench of only £17.0m, which is still unaffordable.

At least one further downgrade would still be needed.

Green arrows also depend on your current ranking, since ownership amongst the top 10k and amongst users of this site might be a bit different - but perhaps not a lot.

Richarlison and Maddison are two of the players who don't currently feature either in the FPL Dream Team or in the FPL most owned, but are quite popular amongst active FPL managers.

Agreed. Personally I probably wouldn't get Lacazette if two of Wilson, Mitrovic and Arnautovic are firing, as you can have them along with Aguero instead. Will need to track the form carefully and have an upgrade plan. For me it is either Aguero or Kane, not both as this ruins the team structure. I currently have Richarlison and Maddison as this enables the rest of my team which is doing good so far in the top 10K.

So basically my preferred team would be:

            Patricio
            Alonso | Robertson | Doherty
            Maddison | Hazard | Sterling | Mane
            Aguero | Arnautovic | Lacazette

            Bench: 4.0GK | WB | Bennett | 4.5 Mid

If I still had my WC I could actually afford this team, although my TV is quite good.

Good read, but personally I fin it more amusing to look at the "best attainable team", rather than the dreamteam.

The best attainable team (given better teamvalue) would prob be something like this:
      Patricio
      Alonso-Rob-Trippier-walker-Doherty
      Fraser-hazard-Sterling
      Aguero-Laca

Total points: 561 (9pts off the dreamteam)

Personally I think this team gives a better picture of the FPL-landscape sofar this season, as it highlights where the value has been located sofar (defence).

I'll probably do the same for Pedro/Salah. Bit of a risk on KDB, but can't afford it with Sterling. Will come down to how much I want Mane; not a lot tbh but can't ignore the fixtures.

      2 West Ham vs Huddersfield
      2 Chelsea vs Everton
      1 Man-City vs UTD
      3 Liverpool vs Fulham

Only problem will be Richarlison vs Chelsea

      Not so bad 🙂
