Learning from The Great and The Good: Gameweek 8

“Panic on the streets of London”

There was panic for some of The Great and The Good as all signs pointed to a Hurri-Kane going into GW8. For those who didn’t own him then sales of soft furnishings must have rocketed but it was sofa so good when he not only blanked but then his main rival Hazard delivered. Moving on, there was also the small matter of Az playing his wildcard, but more of that later. For those of you who have avoided these articles so far….The Great and The Good are Jay Egersdorff, Ville Ronka, The Scout-casters (Joe, Andy, Az, David, Granville, and Mark), Eliteserien’s expert Niemi, and the last man standing Torres Magic. These are FPL managers I have handpicked to follow and improve my own performance.

Overall Performance

Ville Ronka GW 79 pts Total 556 pts (rank 9294 )

TorresMagic GW 75 pts Total 552 pts (rank 12533)

Andy GW 71 pts Total 551 pts (rank 13185)

Niemi GW 68 pts Total 537 pts (rank 31893)

David GW 83 pts Total 534 pts (rank 36017)

Joe GW 61 pts Total 530 pts (rank 45577)

Mark GW 74 pts Total 523 pts (rank 64168)

Granville GW 56 pts Total 519 pts (rank 76475)

Az GW 60 pts Total 505 pts (rank 141771)

Jay Egersdorff GW 70 pts Total 460 pts (rank 645547)

The top score this week from The Great and The Good came from David. Seen as the underdog by many going into the season he scored a very healthy 83 points. He stuck to his guns (which is more than Jay did) and captained Hazard to great effect, he also had a solid defensive play and his love of the Wolves must be continuing as both Doherty and Patricio contributed to a great gameweek. He is now in the top 50k and this is unchartered territory so maybe this is the season to crack the top 10k.

Andy’s time at the top of The Great and The Good didn’t last long as inevitably Ville Ronka moved into no.1 spot with chilling efficiency. He was another one to captain Hazard and moved into the top 10k. Mark continues his rise and made it 6 green arrows in a row to make the initial couple of weeks seem a forgotten memory and he is now in the top 100k for the first time this season. Granville was the only one of the non-Kane captainners not to see a rise. The original maverick picked Alonso to carry the armband, however it was perhaps that fact he is the only manager not to have Hazard plus the bench points of Wilson and Mendy which hampered him the most this week. Meanwhile Jay continues his move up the rankings with a second green arrow in a row but it is steady progress as he fell for the Kane trap and Az must be disappointed at his initial returns from his wildcard which saw him receive a red arrow for all his deliberations.

Transfers and Hits

Let’s start with Az’s long awaited wildcard. What did the Lord of the Wingbacks do? Has he created the new template and which of the big hitters has he gone for?

In – Hamer, Fabianski, Doherty, Obiang, Arnautovic, Sterling, Kane, Hazard

Out – Patrício, Stekelenburg, Mendy, Mane, Aguero, Fraser, Kamara, Salah

Flexibility seems to be the key here bringing in Sterling and Kane but giving himself enough in the bank to switch to Salah/Aguero over the next couple of weeks. He finally fell for the charms of Hazard and went for Arnie upfront (although missed the price rise in a schoolboy error). Fabianski was bought in as his set and forget keeper. However, both of the Hammers failed to deliver in their initial outing for Az and in fact it was only Hazard and Doherty (in some style) of his new signings who contributed more than a blank this week. It will be intriguing to see if he brings back Salah or Aguero during the international break.

This is a summary of the rest of transfers for this week :-

Andy – No transfer

David – Maddison (David Silva)

Granville – Gudmundsson (David Silva)

Jay – Kane, Maddison (David Silva, Aguero)

Joe – Kane, TAA (Robertson, Aguero)

Mark – Kane (Aguero)

Niemi – Kane (Aguero)

Torres Magic – Kane, Jiménez (Aguero, Zaha)

Ville Ronka – Doherty (S Cook)

*transfers out are in brackets

Andy was the only one not to make any transfers this week and avoided the rush for Harry as Kane was already in his squad. However the events on Saturday may see him already shown the exit door with his plan to bring back Salah a certainty and a rumoured move for Lacazette also being considered. Elsewhere, six of The Great and The Good bought in the Tottenham talisman with Jay seemingly going against his own advice and taking a hit in the process. He clearly is having no luck this season. Granville, David and Ronka were immune to the Spurs man and made running repairs to their teams. Gudmundsson was a particularly smart move from Granville but take a bow Mr Ronka who purchased Doherty to see him score his first goal of the season.  Joe was particularly unfortunate this week with both his transfers failing to have any impact with Trent Alexander-Arnold only making the bench. Perhaps the fact that David Silva was the most popular transfer out from The Great and The Good will raise the most eyebrows. Interestingly, David and Andy are the only ones to roll transfers into the international break and the follow the sage guidance of being ready for any injuries during the global adventures of their squads.

Template and Formation

After the wildcard and those transfers the template now looks like this:-

Hennessey, Patricio/Hamer

Wan-Bissaka, Robertson, Doherty, Alonso, TAA/Bennett/Trippier

Salah, Hazard, Maddison, Richarlison, Fraser/Hojbjerg

Mitrovic, Kane, Aguero/Jimenez

So Az’s wildcard and the clamour for Kane meant changes in the template. Harry joins Mitrovic in the front three although I think this may be short-lived and Aguero finds himself competing with Jimenez for the final berth after he was sacrificed by so many. Mendy dropped out completely which I sense may be a mistake as he returned this weekend and delivered points again. Trent Alexander-Arnold replaces him in the battle for the fifth defensive spot but then had to make do with a place on the bench for Liverpool, which may put off further investment. In other news, Hamer and Hojbjerg are now the preferred bench fodder. Currently only Alonso and Wan-Bissaka sit in all ten teams.

343 remains the preferred weapon of choice for the majority of The Great and The Good and this has now been utilised 54% of the time. Again Ville Ronka is the only one not to have played the formation all season and again this week decided to deploy a 451. With the growing options at the back (the emergence of Doherty, return of Mendy, lack of rotation for Trippier [so far] and possible doubling up on Liverpool defenders) we may see more move towards a 4 man defence over the next few weeks.

Team Investment and Value

Average Cost of Player looks like this across the teams based on week 1 prices:

Goalkeeper –  4.4

Defender – 5.1

Midfielder – 8

Forward – 8.2

ITB – 0.6

We saw further movement in the budget allocation with more shifting funds into their forward lines and for the first time this season we see the average being spent on the strike force above that of the midfield. A note of caution before other managers begin to look at their own structure of their teams – the one man who continues to invest the least on forwards is the top man Ville Ronka who averages only 7m compared to Andy who is at 9.7m.  When looking at the metric of team value Mr Ronka also leads the way with 103.4 (please note for those of you following along that is based on value as of GW8 deadline). There are 3 others in the 103 gang with Joe, Granville and Niemi also hitting the mark.

Captain and Differentials

The captaincy choice started to get interesting this week and Sir Harold was the most popular; Ronka and David were Kane-less so went with Hazard. The Belgian delivered and his consistency must make him a popular choice going forward perhaps his previous troll history is clouding managers judgement when deciding to give him the armband. This week saw a maverick pick from Granville who went with Alonso. Although this was the week for a differential pick it was still a bold play but he certainly managed more points than you know who. In terms of the managers, David is the current king of the mountain when it comes to picking the armband and averages 19.75 from his choices this season, which is very impressive.

I have listed out the most popular choices from The Great and The Good below:

Captain choice %

Salah – 45%

Aguero – 41%

Kane – 9%

Hazard – 4%

Alonso – 1%

There are few more interesting differentials in play as The Great and Good start to take a few risks and jostle for position. Sterling is the star turn and could be a game changer for Az if he continues to get playing time over the next few weeks. Arnie could also be key for him if he stays injury free. Surprisingly Andy is the only one with David Silva and I fancy this to work in his favour if he avoids rotation. Gudmundsson In Granville’s squad is another one to keep an eye on with good form as Burnley continue to recover from their European adventures and Jay continues to have patience with Zaha but as his fixtures turn I am not sure how long this will last.

So what will the international break bring for The Great and Good? Will we see a mass Kanexit and will they simply bring back Aguero and ask for forgiveness or use It as a way of redistributing the funds in midfield and at the back? Will we see more 4 man defences employed with such a wealth of options available? Will any of them put trust in the Liverpool forwards with dream set of fixures coming up? Will Granville finally admit defeat and bring in Hazard? Can they all continue to ignore the lure of Lacazette’s form?

However, that’s all from me for now and remember don’t have nightmares.

The Great and The Good GW8

'343 remains the preferred weapon of choice for the majority of The Great and The Good and this has now been utilised 54% of the time.'

Is 343, for you, the best formation right now? What are you playing for GW9? Are you considering other formations?

'Again Ville Ronka is the only one not to have played the formation all season and again this week decided to deploy a 451.'

With the fixtures turning now for Liverpool, are you looking to get in their defence? What about a double up? Why are you considering Liverpool defence, or why are you not? Are you looking at having Alonso and Trippier?

'With the growing options at the back (the emergence of Doherty, return of Mendy, lack of rotation for Trippier [so far] and possible doubling up on Liverpool defenders) we may see more move towards a 4 man defence over the next few weeks.'

Is this something you will consider? Which big hitters are most important: Robertson, Alonso, Trippier, Mendy?

How flexible are you in formation? Do you look to play the same formation every week?

I’m now open to ditching AWB & taking the 0.1 - I can’t see more than 10 points in his next 5, and in the 5 following that he has 3 away, including Man City.... could be wrong of course, maybe he’ll sneak a few CS’s.

But at the minute my plan is to stick with him benched as 2nd/3rd sub & stick with a back 4.

He is a 4.0 fodder who at the start of the season was bought by us managers as just that.

We knew he had promise to start, but the fact he does, and keeps clean sheets, and gets max BPS is a massive bonus.

Over the tough games, just let him be what he was intentionally set out to be.. a fodder who enables money to be spent elsewhere.

Team values have increased by so much now that the extra 0.3 - 0.5 to turn him into Jonny or Doherty is not a big deal at all, and whilst is cosmetically a nice bench player, there are no games I’d even want him coming off the bench in 8 of the next 10 GW’s - kind of like a dead slot in the squad for 10 weeks

This. I have Hudson-Odoi as my dead player, so I traded in AWB for TAA already. Barely losing any money or sleep over it.

An extra 0.1-0.3 can buy you a lot in defence, so it's worth the upgrade if the will see time in your XI. On the other hand. Hudson-Odoi > 4.6ish midfielder won't get me as many points as a 4.4ish defender. Likewise, Hudson-Odoi > 5.3ish midfielder won't get me more points than TAA (unless you can afford to get Deulofail of course! 😀 )

What your view on the dead odoi vs possibly owning a rotational piece like Kenedy/Hughes. Thats only 0.6-0.7.

This is just in general. Not to be compared against your Wan-->TAA move

To begin the season I had Hughes on my bench for 5 gameweeks, wasting funds. I thought this was a good idea because of the unpredicability during the season opening. I could rely on Hughes if someone was injured, dropped, or just not good, instead of jumping every bandwagon. As you meay remeber, I aslo had Sakho and AWB on my bench, so I'm obviously not against spending an extra 0.5 or so to increase the longevity of the team.

I think this is expecially useful at the beginning of the season, and again once you play your wildcard, because the team has to last a long time, prefarably with few hits.

That said, now that we know who some of the could cheap options are, and have an idea of how the season is going in general, I think it's less likely we will need a third sub. And since Bennett makes a good first or second sub, the third sub doesn't need to be playing, necessarily, and at most I'd be prepared to bay the minimum for a starting player (4.4? 4.5?). But at that price, you wouldn't be able to cover Bennet's poor fixtures, really, because no player is good enoug to score more than Bennett, even if they have better fixtures. But that's okay because Bennet can be your second sub some weeks.

A player like Hughes has to be your first or second sub (or in your XI some weeks) imo. The bench should be good, but it doesn't need to be 3-deep, because that extra player is unlikely to make you make the points that the 0.5-1.0m spent would make if saved and spent elsewhere. Also, because the cheap bench players are already going to get more points than him probably (Bennett now, and then AWB when his fixtures are better again). You gotta make the most of the value imo. And rotation can come from your first 1 or 2 subs.

Hope that answers your question 🙂

It's a good answer, but I'm not sure i agree.

I dont give much thought to who's at the third slot each week, as the player placed there rarerly gets to play. So thats not a factor at all.

I'm just not sure if limiting oneself from having 13 outfield players to instead having 12, actually gives better prospects of good returns? Sure you get more money to spend on your "regulars", but is it worth "throwing away" a potential rotational piece.

I'm not certain that im on the right side of this conundrum, but it just seems to me, that with all the good budgetoptions this season, there is a case to think this way.

That extra rotational piece might give you a better playe, than whats possible with the "12 man strategy, just enough times to make up for the "wasted" funds.

I'm just not convinced I'd want the extra rotation option in my XI. Hughes will get 2pts most weeks, even in good fixtures, followed by 3pts in some, 1pt in others, and finally, most unlikely is 4+ points, I think. I feel the money is probably better off in the bank than in Hughes, and anyone cheaper than him is even worse.

I get what you're saying though. I semi-advocated it before the start of the season https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/18392638

                        Hah!

Then it seems like We've both altered our stance ever so slightly in opposite directions :p

I started with kamara but i've altered my structure a bit. Was ofcourse Hoping he could Get regular mins but was happy if he didnt at the start of the season. Skiftes him last week as I wanted more rotational pieces going forward, but I'm also currently keeping Wan, so maybe that means were not that different, as hes pretty much as "dead" as odoi going forward. I'm not a 100% certain, because I have'nt looked at it extensively, but I do think that if i was on a WC this week, I'd be looking to have all the 13 outfieldplayers as "playable" as possible, with 4-5 of them rotating for the 10th and 11th slot.

Funny how we saw Hughes differently at the start of the season. I wanted him as a part of my rotations, you didnt were'nt looking to play him at all? Tbh, hes done allright for me. 20pts in 5 appearences has to be considered decent returns on the investment.

This, exactly this! for me you need

4.0 ish Defender who ideally plays - AWB and Bennett - keep one of them
4.4 ish mid who ideally plays - Although you will never pick them

With those two plus a 4.0 keeper you can focus your funds on 12 quality player, safe in the knowledge you have back up.

Zladan is advocation not selling AWB

                Doesn't quite fit *scratches head*

In other news, a move of AWB > Bennett wouldn't be ridiculous if you need someone for gameweeks (9), 10 and 13.

343 with three premium defenders and Bennett + AWB as back up. 4.5 junk last on the bench.
Been set up like this for a while now but very open to changing to 352 if the likes of Sterling, KDB, Spurs mids, Richarlison all start firing.

Dunno, midfielders just seem to be such good value at the moment.

I want a midfield comprised as far as possible of forwards such as Hazard, Sterling etc. to squeeze the extra value out of their clean sheet points and extra goal points. If I can find five of these I will go 3-5-2 or even 4-5-1.

Otherwise what I might do is select three affordable strikers (Lacazette and two of Murray, Arnautovic, Mitrovic) and this will allow me to get a quality (rather than quantity!) midfield.

Flexible 3-4-3/ 4-4-2 formation for me.

There is good value at the back so you can shift away from the traditional 3-4-3 FPL model and having a strong 12th man is always useful. A strong 13th and 14th man less so IMO so having fodder like AWB and Billing is fine there.

Yeah I'm looking to suck it up and investing in a really decent 12th man. You never know when one of your starting players is going to miss a game randomly or have a horrible fixture that you might want to skip. Someone like Fraser rather than a 4.5 midfielder might be just the ticket.

I posted about my formations yesterday. I've played 3-4-3 and 4-3-3 4 times each, and the average points of each formation is 69.5! 😀

In general 3-4-3 is my default, but I'm not averse to switching it up as the game demands. For example, I started 3-4-3, but when Richarlison was suspended I decided Alonso was the best replacement at that price point so I switched to a 4-3-3 by replacing Richarlison with bench fodder and upgrading Cedric.

Now that Richarlison's return coincided with Mendy's absence, it was back to 3-4-3 by downgrading Mendy to fodder and upgrading fodder to Richarlison.

So then, I like formations that allow me to be flexible if needed: 3-4-3, 4-3-3, 3-5-2 and 4-4-2 can all switch between each other with transfer or two. Other formations are less flexible and I'm less of a fan.

I'm also less of a fan of flexibility within each gameweek - I've seen so many posts along the lines of "bench Maddison or Wilson?", and a lot of them end up in disappointment.

Flexibility is always the key between the 4th defender, 4th mid and 3rd forward .... not sure why people trap themselves in to a corner with rigid formations 🙂

Your being rigid in your own right.
That satement to me suggests your only looking to play 11 out of your 13 outfield players on a regular basis. For you, its either 442, 343 or 4-3-3. The game offers several other formations.

Not at all, just that some players are preferred to others to start ... AWB is my fifth defender and more than happy to play him, Ings my 3rd striker but unfortunately McDonald is my third mid and isn’t starting now but I would be happy to play him.

So its really more about having as many players as possible, that you "could" be happy to play, amongst the players that dont fit the criteria preferred starter. These players are then sort of "competing" for the 11th, tenth, maybe even ninth slot in your squad?

No, you are looking at it from the wrong end, the point I was making is that some people have 11 players that only fit in to one formation, and have a bench of non starting or very poor players that are not useable to provide any other effective formation.

Luckily now as the season has matured, Wolves defenders & AWB have given options though for many to possibly play 3 or 4 at the back, but that has largely been happenstance

i still see a lot of comments on here with people preferring the 3 at the back with 7 'forwards'.....but the prem defenders alonso, mendy robbo and Taa (maybe trip although aurier will surely feature soon)...could also include the amazing doherty, am i the only one thinking that having 4 of these players in your line up each week will almost guarantee you with at least 6 extra points week in week out, whether it be from assist or cs , particularly in mendy, Taa's and Robbo and alonsos case i think.

My question is who are the mids/forwards who can to the same effect guarantee you that week in week out, after all this is what we are searching for no? 11 players that get at least 6pts each week consistently. prob hazard, aguero, sterling at the mo, fraser was on that kind of form with rich and wilson and laca too....but can they all do this week in week out?

Of course i am not taking into consideration higher ceilings, this is without a doubt....but mids and forwards imo are more likely to blank this season than these elite def's ...thats why i am going 4-4-2 or 4-3-3.

interesting to see other peoples opinions re. the higher ceiling vs consistency debate.
and yes if my theory is correct then why arent we all playing the 5-3-2 formation....so im happy to be proven wrong.

        Because of formationcosts.
There are more valid playing options costing 4.5 or less in defence than in midfield/attack. A 5man D basically means benching more "money" every week.

This doesn't mean that 5man d cant be worth it though, its just a logical rationale as to why other formations are more "cost-effective".

If I was on my Wc this week, id look to maybe get a defence that could be 3-4-5 any given week. maybe something like RAM+5.0+Doherty.

This is great thanks. I was sure someone had a valid reason why we can’t go too far that way, and this makes sense, I do have that 3-4-5 in a way, I currently have AWB - Doherty - Taa - mendy and alonso. So I think I will stick with this as it can give me the flexibility when needed.

Yup. Those 5 should give you the option to go with both defensive and offensive formations.

Value is in the defense every season.
6.0 defenders are better than 6.0 mids. However, 4.5 defenders are better than 4.5 mids. That's why I like to have 2 4.5/4.0 defenders who would usually be my bench options, but can also play over a 6.0 mid with a tough fixture, because it maximises funds, whilst still having a decent bench.
If I go premium at the back, leaving only one 4.0-4.5 defender, then I don't feel comfortable with having 2 attackers that are 4.5-5.0. Out of the outfield players, I want at least 12 out of 13 players that I feel comfortable playing, which means having 2 decent bench options, but I still want to maximise funds for the starting 11. The way to do this seems to be having at least 2 budget defenders. This means I'm more likely to go 3-4-3, but I have the flexibility to play 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 if I needed to. At the minute I have 3 budget defenders, but will probably upgrade a 4.5 in a couple of weeks, after I downgrade Kane.
Of course this season, we have amazing value for budget defenders with Wolves defenders and Wan-Bissaka, so I'm really not averse to playing 4 at the back if I think that's best for a particular week, and having that amazing value, gives us flexibility a much more usable bench. This might come into play when Richarlison has hard away games at Chelsea and Liverpool.

You cant picture yourself having 4 premium defenders, and have maybe doherty, kenedy, Ings rotating for the 11th slot, and sometimes 10th slot in your XI? I dont see a problem with that.

I guess that's affordable and doable, but with Kenedy and Ings you're spending an extra 0.5 or 1.0 in your bench than needed, which could make a difference when it comes to which premiums you can get. Of course it's viable and I get anyone who does it, I just prefer not to

Thats the question with no answer, as people will have very different experiences. That 1.0 might have huge impact, and also it may not. Being able to rotate and Get quality off the bench might have a huge impact, but also it may not.

Regardless of how you choose, you need to Get the right players for each system. That requires skill and a lot of luck. So I def Get the idea with going for the system you are comfortable with.

I believe "locking in to a formation" might be best avoided this season. Theres to many budgetoptions available in all positions.

In defence we've got Bennet, Wan, Doherty and the other wolvesassets, Holebas, TAA and Pereira that can all make the switch between being benchplayers or 10/11th in your squad. Add NUFC and brightonplayers to the fold going forward.

In midfield these players (in various degrees) fit the same criterias: Kenedy, Hughes, Fraser, Knockaert, Seri, Milner.

Amongst forwards we've got these: Jim, Ings,

Makes it sensible to spend a little bit more on 2-3 semirotational pieces, which leads to the possibility of playing 3-4-3, 4-3-3, 3-5-2 and even perhars 5-3-2/5-2-3.

I think you maybe right, what you have been saying makes a lot of sense. What is your OR?

I’m glad that this is being discussed finally, it’s something that I have been thinking about long and hard and never see it being talked about on here, I’d like to bring it up in a scoutcast actually . You’re right, no one knows the right answer really about having that ‘premium’ bench I.e Fraser and ing’s or not I.e Hojbjerg and success
But since the big clubs are rotating so much this season then I am inclined to look at the good bench ...cheers

          Im around 16k atm.

Its very hard to make a case against cheap fodder as long as they are starting week in week out. Just look at Wan. Some might think that as long as he's playing his current run of fix wont be a prob, because he'll be glued to the bench. Others might think that he holds a valuable slot, and if they are not likely to play him going forward, he should be swapped to add more "pieces" to the fold.

In the current FPL-climate, I believe that theres reason to add some "strength in depth", but not at any cost. Just a couple of days ago i had a discussion on ffs where I voiced concerns about a guy who had his sightseeing on a rotation strategy that mean benching 2+ 6m+ players every week.

The idea of depth can also Get "to rich" i suppose.

I’ve played 3-4-3 five times, 4-4-2 twice, and 4-3-3 once. Currently ranked in the top 1000.

I like to have a squad with some flexibility so I can play the form/fixtures game with my 4th defender, 4th midfielder, and 3rd striker.

This is the first game week that I’ve had a true bench headache. I’ll likely play 3-4-3 or 4-3-3.

      My current defense is Alonso-Robertson-TAA-Doherty-AWB.

I have owned Fraser since the start of the season. He’s probably been my favourite pick so far, especially as it was over Jota.

But now I’m not sure I want him in my team. I could cash in and profit on his price rises now before his fixtures turn ugly.

He is currently flagged, and although he has Southampton and Fulham in his next two, I’m on a Wildcard and there’s no way he can get in ahead of the rest of my team to even play those games unless there are injuries.

I always have this tendency to hold on to players too long.

Is it time to ditch him?

I am planning to ditch him in a week or two but if you are on wildcard do it now as you will basically save a transfer 2 weeks from now. He was good but with fixture shift he will become more of a hit or miss and in 3 weeks ManUtd starts having solid fixtures so might be time to start preemptively looking at the likes of pogba and felaini

Picking a Liverpool attacker this next game week is a mine field, Doubts over Salah and Mane. Firmino set to play for Brazil and a long flight home. Is it worth sitting behind the couch this week and jump on board next week when the situations should be a lot clearer?

Agree, i'm waiting right up to the deadline for any news, it's Salah or Mane for me, I have no desire to own Firmino. If either are ruled out I may even take a punt on Sturridge?

TAA and Rob is the Liverpool cover to have for this week, from next week add Mo or Mane and possibly stick with these 3 for the rest of season baring injuries

        Nope, have the following:

        Patricio | Foster
        Alonso | Robbo | Trippier | WB | Bennett
        Salah | Hazard | Maddison | Richarldson | Ward
        Kun | Wilson | Mitro

Have 0.3ITB and 2FT. So can get in Doherty and Sterling this week, monitor the Salah situation and perhaps get him next week instead if he plays and does well.
