Squads among the top 10,000 bracket of Fantasy Premier League managers changed a little for Gameweek 9.

The international break triggered 4.4% of Wildcards at that level of the overall rankings. This was more than double the figure from any of the previous three Gameweeks.

In this article, we will highlight the differences between the choices made by Wildcarders and the rest of managers, also discussing the effect of injury news during the break.

As expected, the Wildcard chip is the only one that has significant usage this week.

This leads to a cumulative percentage of managers in the top 10k who already used the chip to 73.7%, a number that is particularly high considering we are only almost half-way through the first Wildcard usage window.

The overall cumulative percentage of Wildcarders is much lower, 35.4% and we could see significant changes in the top10k fabric if the Wildcards that are to be used in the next few weeks make a big difference.

Most Popular Players

Next, we look at the most common picks of the Gameweek 9 Wildcards vs the total picks of the top 10k.

Most of the Wildcard picks actually explain themselves. The two cheap goalkeepers Rui Patricio and Lukasz Fabianski dominate the Wildcards selection.

In defense, the interest in the in-form Matt Doherty and the returning  Benjamin Mendy is the main focus point. While they are in 72.4%, 69.2% of Wildcard teams respectively, their ownership in the top 10k reside at just 50.4% and 26.1%.

Meanwhile, it seems like Marcos Alonso and Kieran Trippier are the main fall guys.

On the other hand, midfield and attack options look very similar. The only exception is the shy appearance  of Raheem Sterling in 39% of Wildcards while it was Ryan Fraser’s position in the rest of the top 10k.

Speaking of which, the Bournemouth man, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane were the most popular picks that had injuries over the international break.

While Fraser had 42.6% top 10k ownership last week, the number only slightly dropped to 41.8% indicating that only 0.8% managers decided to sell him this week based on his injury concerns.

However, not all who kept him actually had him in the starting XI.

In fact, Fraser’s percentage in started top 10k teams is only 33.85% meaning that around 8% of managers have him on the bench this week.

Meanwhile, Salah and Mane switched places again for top 10k ownership. Salah now leads with 34.1% as opposed to 31.4% for Mane. The Egyptian has an even higher effective ownership since 6.7% of top 10k managers actually gave him the armband this week.

The other top captaincy choices this week are the very popular option of Sergio Aguero (67.2%) and Eden Hazard (7.2%). Other differential captains were Sterling (5.97%), Harry Kane (4.28%) and Alexandre Lacazette (3.5%).

It looks like so far this season, most of the obvious captaincy choices delivered and Aguero continued this pattern today.

Also, as the most owned players in the top 10k have been more or less the same the past few weeks, it can still be hard to beat the template with differential picks or captains. But this could all change.

    Alonso Mendy Robertson TAA (AWB)
    Hazard Mane Richarlison Fraser (Walcott)
    Kane Mitrovic (Kamara)

Thinking of Kane to Arnie with FT but should I be taking a hit for Walcott to Maddison? or Kamara to Vardy maybe, if TAA doesn't play Walcott comes on..

    How does this sound?

    Kane + Sterling ➡ Salah + Arnautovic for -4. Gives me -

    Patricio
    Alonso - TAA - AWB - Bennett
    Salah - Richarlison - Fraser
    Aguero - Vardy - Arnautovic

    Hamer - Trippier - Ward - Schneiderlin

Leaves me enough cash for Fraser ➡ Hazard in GW 11.

    Thoughts please?

They’ve been solid defensively ever since VvD came in last season. Alisson coming in has also helped that.

        • 14 Years

It also isn’t just about performance, Mané and Firmino as you mention are pricey like Salah. Those 3 in your team would decimate the rest of your team.

The big plus for more defensive assets is their price compared to mods/attackers.

    2. Miguel Sanchez
      • 9 Years

Gonna captain Salah against Cardiff and Fulham. Not sure what a minimum number of points in those two games is for him to justify his high price. Its annoying when he scores the only goal and still can't get any BPS

    3. Cok3y5murf
      • 9 Years
      7 years, 5 months ago

Disagree. This is just bias based on the most recent result.

Salah is overpriced in the long term and Mane will be the better value attacker again when he’s back.

      1. Reckoner.
        • 14 Years
        7 years, 5 months ago

Wouldn’t say it’s bias based on recent results, I’ve had these 3 all season.

152 points between them (minus captain points which would push it up to 176).

      2. Reckoner.
        • 14 Years
        7 years, 5 months ago

We’ve already seen Mané’s returns drop off before he got injured, his returns were unsustainable when looking deeper into his stats.

The early season was the exception for him not the norm.

        1. Cok3y5murf
          • 9 Years
          7 years, 5 months ago

Then fair play, you’re not biased. But I still don’t think that’s the best trio.

Salah’s returns dropped off too. How come that’s not mentioned? It was the fixtures. Mane doesn’t have to sustain those returns to be worth his price. Salah has to do better to be worth his price. He can have all the stats in the world but if you watch the games, you can see he just misses a lot of chances and just isn’t as sharp as last season. That’s increased his xG for 9 weeks now.

          1. Reckoner.
            • 14 Years
            7 years, 5 months ago

I just don’t see it like Salah has had a drop off, he always scores more at home than away. He’s only blanked in 1 home game which was against City. His supposed drop off came when he only score 1 in 5 games, 3 of those games being away from home and 1 other being home to City.

If you’re paying 12.8m for a player you are going to want to captain him, know that Salah more often than not is going to return in home games is a massive plus he has over Mané or Firmino for me.

Surely A is the better option. Fraser is done, or not going to keep up with his underlying numbers (me thinks). Aguero is good as allways, but he keeps on getting subbed off after 60 or so minutes. Which is not good enough for a captaincy option.

A couple of talking points I'd like to adress.
First of I'd like to hear what you guys think about KDB now that he looks to be back. Worth getting into the team? If he is as nailed as he was last year he is great value for a City asset. City looks to be cruising to the next title. Can't see anyone stopping them at the moment. All the other options for City are a rotating risk. Except Laporte and Aguero, which brings me to my next talking point.
Aguero keeps on getting subbed off at around 60-70 minutes which to me is not good enough for a captaincy option. Saying that, I still keep on captaining him as I don't feel I have any other good enough options. Is it time to let him go, get a more balanced attack (lower value per player) and maybe invest even more in the midfield?

Last but not least, Alonso is not getting into as much good positions now that we are used to him doing. His high value considered, I don't feel he is giving us his money worth. Time to downgrade and let the likes of Mendy back in? Is Mendy going to continue to play every week? What other premium defender can one opt into. Tottenham seem to continue to rotate their full backs. Robbo seem like an obvious option, but what other premium defender can be a "set and forget", if any?

Food for thought indeed. See below I asked the same thing in regards to aguero.. I'm looking elsewhere so if I downgrade aguero to maybe arnoutavic for his fixtures I could upgrade richarlison to kdb

I've been looking to downgrade Aguero to Arne, and then Fraser to KDB. Got 2 FT's.

Alonso seemed to live in that penalty area at times. Chelsea will keep clean sheets and Alonso will get attacking points. I still think a defence of Mendy - Robertson- Alonso is premium. That defence doesn't look like budging anytime soon.

I've opted to just go with 2 premium defenders, as I feel Doherty/Duffy/WB rotate very well.
Didn't watch the Chelsea game yesterday, it's good to hear he was back in the penalty area, cause last game he was nowhere near or at least less than he used to be!

What to do with TAA and Sterling?

Madness to do TAA, Sterling and Lacazette -> Robertson, Salah and Arnie (-8)?

Would people agree that aguero is now a luxury? Guy only plays 60mins. Time to invest in someone else?

Trying to work out what the smart move is, either kamara to Wilson (343) or wan to trippier (442). Got 6.7m for a striker or 6.5m for a defender. Ideas welcome.

    Hennersey
    Alonso mendy Robertson bennet
    Salah hazard richarlson maddison
    Aguero arnie

    Stek wan hojlberg kamara

Never burned a transfer before, but this could be the first.
    Ryan, Button.
Alonso, Mendy, Robertson, Bennett, Wan Bissaka.
    Salah, Hazard, Richarlison, Maddison, Fraser.
    Aguero, Arnautovic, Kamara.
    0.3 in the bank
I could switch Kamara to Success, but really......?
I know I could do a one week transfer for,a plum fixture, but would really want this team in two weeks time, so is it worth it?
If it is, what transfer should I be looking at?

    TAA is dropped permanently now?

Didn't play against City, called up for England and played 10 mins, didn't play against Huddersfield.

Last time he had decent minutes was 3 October against Napoli - so by the Red Star game mid-week he basically won't have played for 3 weeks.
