It was as if somebody wound back time as Watford proved the Fantasy Premier League coupon busters on Saturday afternoon.

Not only were in vogue outfit Wolves surprisingly overturned on their patch, but the Hornets key Fantasy assets were all ones long-believed to have been dormant.

We’ve run the rule over Watford’s 2-0 win at Molineux to find out what went wrong for Nuno Espírito Santo’s side.

Wolves 0-2 Watford

Goals: Etienne Capoue (£5.0m), Roberto Pereyra (£6.2m)

Assists: Abdoulaye Doucouré x2 (£5.9m)

Watford manager Javi Gracia revealed that he targetted Wolves’ wing-back areas to bring them crashing back down to earth on Saturday.

The newly-promoted side had been the surprise package of 2018/19 thus far and had been offering incredible FPL defensive value too. Between Gameweek 1 and 8 they allowed just five big chances, level with Manchester City on 0.63 per game. Against Watford, they allowed two, nearly quadrupling their average for the season coming into the match.

Ironically, Wolves allowed marginally fewer shots inside the penalty area than usual. Between the season-opening draw against Everton and the Gameweek 8 win at Crystal Palace, they averaged 5.25 efforts in that area of the pitch compared to just five against Watford.

Passes in the final third in Wolves (left) vs Watford (right) | Completed passes are green

In a way, that shows that Gracia knew exactly what he was doing against Wolves, guiding Watford’s attacking play in specific areas to hurt their opponents, as can be seen from the heat map above.

“When you’re playing against Wolves you have to defend well against the wing-backs because many times they are very deep and you need to defend well in those situations. We know where we can find spaces to play and we felt comfortable in the first half. We created good lines for passes, we created the possibility to have good possession – not only keeping possession but creating chances to score and I think we did it better in the first half than the second.” – Javi Gracia

However, Gracia still admitted Wolves were hard to break down. Owners of their assets will have to hope that holds true in Gameweek 10.

“It’s not easy. They didn’t concede many chances, they’re always a compact team and are well-organised and today has been a very good game.” – Javi Gracia

The result for Watford was made all the more impressive by the fact that Gracia made four changes to the side thrashed at home by Bournemouth in Gameweek 8.

Three of them were enforced with Jose Holebas (£4.8m) and Christian Kabasele (£4.5m) suspended while Troy Deeney (£6.0m) missing out with a hamstring problem.

“He has a hamstring strain but I think he’ll be ready for the next game, I think so.” – Javi Gracia

Adam Masina (£4.3m), Adrian Mariappa (£4.2m) and Isaac Success (£4.5m) were brought into the side to replace those absentees while Andre Gray (£6.0m) dropped to the bench to allow FPL midfielder Gerard Deulofeu (£5.4m) to make his return in the unorthodox position of centre-forward. That was according to the team-sheet anyway, with Gracia referring to him as more of a number 10 after the match.

“Playing with one striker and Roberto (Pereyra), Gerard (Deulofeu) and Will (Hughes) behind him you can find another style of play that you can’t do when you play with two strikers. Today I know Gerard is not in the best condition yet but he’s helped the team to play well and get a good result as well.” – Javi Gracia

Wolves manager Nuno named an unchanged side for the ninth match in a row, a new Premier League record. However, the defeat on Saturday may cause him to make some changes for when they travel to Brighton in Gameweek 10.

“But it is a good point (that my players may be feeling their places are secure). We didn’t play good (against Watford), we didn’t play well, we didn’t perform, so when you don’t perform, you don’t get the result, and it was a disappointing day of course.” – Nuno

Given that he has not made a single alteration to his starting XI this season, it is difficult to predict where he might rotate next week. Going just on the substitutions made against Watford, Jonny (£4.5m) was hooked at half-time and replacement with Rúben Vinagre (£4.3m). In the second half, Ivan Cavaleiro (£5.3m) came on for Raúl Jiménez (£5.7m) and Adama Traoré (£5.5m) swapped in for Matt Doherty (£4.8m).

While it was a disappointing afternoon for Wolves, with discouraging statistics to back it up, their days as FPL options are not yet over. Chasing matches is not something they have been adept at since Nuno took over. Bearing in mind that they won the Championship at a canter, it should be no surprise that Wolves are much more comfortable when in control of matches.

Between Gameweek 1 and 8 they averaged 2.25 big chances per game, the sixth best in the league. Against Watford, they did not register a single one. Their 10 goal attempts and four shots in the box were also below their season averages of 13.75 and 7.63 per game respectively.

Wolves have conceded the first goal just 11 times under Nuno but they have come from behind to win just once. That was a dramatic 2-1 victory at Bristol City last December. As there was an element of fortune about Etienne Capoue‘s (£5.0m) opening strike from distance, with Rui Patrício (£4.6m) blindsided, it seems to fair to say that even in the Premier League they will not find themselves in similar situations too often. For that reason, it is worth retaining faith in Wolves assets for now. That is, of course, if they can stop more teams targetting the space behind their full-backs like Watford did.

Wolves XI (3-4-3): Patrício; Boly, Coady, Bennett; Jonny (Vinagre 45′), Moutinho, Neves, Doherty (Traoré 72′); Jota, Jiménez (Cavaleiro 60′), Costa.

Watford XI (4-4-2): Foster; Masina, Cathcart, Mariappa, Kiko Femenia; Pereyra, Capoue, Doucouré, Hughes; Success (Prödl 75 | Wilmot 88′), Deulofeu (Gray 69′).

    Hi all!

Just popping on to mention our latest pod is out: http://whogottheassist.com/pod-51-fpl-x-fi-feat-football-index-guide/

A weary week in FPL is a good time to record a “feature” pod with @_FiGuide (Pet Berisha) to talk about FPL and Football Index, and the various comparisons and contrasts between the two games plus what we might learn from one another.

We then go through our usual features (including a short speaker’s corner from FiG) followed by taking questions on the defence

    Enjoy!

I have very similar team and am worried that I am Salah-less (not that he is really playing that well).

Most of my work mini league have Salah and none Sterling so thinking that as I have decent lead currently it may be worth bringing in Salah but would be for minus 4 (which is annoying).

To bring in Salah would have to find 0.5 million so thinking Siggy (but don't want to lose him) to Schurrle.

Answer is maybe dependent on who you are up against.

Sterling from memory did very well at Spurs last season and this season Spurs are worse so he could very well do OK but Cardiff at home is plum.

Saying that, I was one of those who did the Kane (Cardiff @ home) / Aguero hokey cokey and look how that turned out. 2 wasted transfers and loss of quite a few points.

@trentaa98 asked about not playing last few games:

“It's a massive club and there's massive competition for places. It's wrong if you are going into a game & thinking you are starting. Rotation keeps everyone on their toes and gets the best out of people."

Personally I'd be surprised he doesn't start. Murphy, who is Cardiff's best player plays on that wing and is rapid so you'd think Klopp would prefer someone like a Trent rather than a Gomez. Can't be sure though.

Classic case of don't buy, don't sell

Gomez is much better defensively than Trent and is no slouch.

TAA not a great defender but cardiff is a good fixture for him if Klopp is somehow 'developing' the lad's skillset, you know what i mean.

What does anyone think about Lovren as a pick?

He seems to have played two full games and got max bonus in each, he's cheap, and he's got good fixtures.

Lovren is the perfect example of how social media can sway people's opinions. Everyone says he is trash, so he must be right? In reality, he's actually a very good defender.

Who is this Klopp guy who seems to play him whenever he's fit? What's he thinking!? Everyone on social media says he's rubbish.

Rotation threat. Do you own Robertson? If not then just sacrifice elsewhere and get him in. If this for second Liv defender then okay but you should have a decent bench.

I'm leaning in that direction to be honest. Just got a feeling PVA may get some returns against Arsenal and there could even be an unexpected CS. I try to go for CS odds first though and I guess Bennett ticks that box. Can be a threat from set pieces too.

      A) L&R - more nailed I think but not much in it

Lots have Arnie already, and Fab is a popular choice in goal. Hazard and Alonso in everyone's team and Spurs players aren't difficult to bring in if they start to show promise which hasn't been the case at all this season outside of Trippier. Settle down.

            • 7 Years

lol ok so KDB, Laca, Bellerin, Ozil, Eriksen, Trippier will be easy to bring in Pep? If you survive til GW15 ahead of me, i look forward to passing you due to your hits alone 😆

            1. Pep says
              • 10 Years
              7 years, 5 months ago

KdB can be brought in anytime. Pool, Chelsea and City's fixtures are pretty decent around that time anyway so it's not like Tripp and Bellerin are gonna make a bug difference, they'll just be similar options in a different team.

You've got Laca, Ozil and Eriksen. Eriksen didn't do a whole pile early in the season, not sure anyone would wanna jump on straight away without at least assessing for a few weeks to see how spurs are looking. Ozil could be back to his regular self. All I'm saying is you're making it seem that come GW 15, you're gonna load up with all these players, no one else will have them and they're all gonna explode. Of course it could happen but it might not. You're so arrogant about the future yet you and anyone hasn't a clue what's gonna happen

It's not that easy though. I've drafted up a WC forward line of Kun Laca Arnie - for that to happen, I'd need to shred the rest of my side up.

I'm aware of that. I don't think I'd want Laca and Kun though. Wizard is mentioning Ozil and Erik and Bellerin and Trippier. Is he just gonna up and ditch Mendy and Alonso and Robertson and Haz and Salah. It's gonna get tricky that's for sure, but just cause you have a wildcard, doesn't mean you're gonna get it right.
