Fantasy Premier League managers can learn a lot from the financial sector, according to our latest Meet the Manager guest Marc Rubinstein.

With three top 5,000 finishes in his FPL career, he has a strong track record of success. This is something he attributes in part to his 20 years of experience in the financial sector, including a stint as a partner for one of Europe’s largest hedge fund firms.

In our chat, Marc looks at how key financial services issues around diversification, risk management and data analysis can be applied to Fantasy Football management.

He reveals how Richarlison will help him not to lose, but not necessarily win, and why Newcastle-era Andy Carroll may well have been one of the greatest FPL investments of all time.

The battle between luck and skill is also explored and why the proliferation of expert managers and information is making it harder each year to achieve the number one spot. This theme is explored further via this Twitter thread from Marc.

But his approach is not based purely on analysis, theory and data. Marc also reveals how his emotional ties with Liverpool has a direct impact on each of his campaigns.

The chat with Marc is available to view on Youtube here and in the embedded video below.

          Because Everton defence.
          Relatively unproven too.

Your more likely to get cleanies from TAA, and Liverpool score more goals. I think a benching here and there is still better than owning everton defence.

Big chances are the currency of goals this season and Fraser has created more big chances than any other player in the entire league. He has created 3 more big chances than Hazard, for instance.

I’ve had him since the start . It’s just this run of fixtures that puts me off retaining him. And the fact that everyone is on Richarlson this week and also captaining him. Could hurt my rank.

If I do Diangana to Richarlson I can’t uograde kamara to jiminez . My reasoning is Richarlson and jiminez will outscore Fraser and kamara .

Hmmm they probably will, but Fraser is someone to keep hold of long term.

Kamara may be Mitro's strike partner this week. You never know.

No, especially if you got him in from the start of the season.

He was very influential in the two Scotland internationals during the break and should continue that form despite an upcoming tough fixture list.

Digne or Doherty in for Mendy?

    1. Boss Hogg

Both great options. I'd probably go for Dinge.
Vinaigre will play on the other wing as a replacement for Jonny. Doesn't affect Doherty at all I don't think, other than it'll be only the second change to a very settled line-up.

That's a really strong team and you have great choices throughout. The only change I'd made (and this is a personal preference) would be to downgrade Jiminez to a non-playing striker and upgrade my 5th mid. However, that's because I'd play a 3-5-2 / 4-4-2 formation.

The only other thing to be mindful of is that Stones could be at risk of rotation with Kompany / Ota during the Xmas period.

    Alonso, Robbo, AWB, Digne, Jonny
    Hazard, Mane, Fraser, Mahrez, Richa
    Kun, Arnie, Success

Do I transfer out Jonny? For whom? Or I simply play Arnie in a 3-5-2 formation?
Tempted to Doherty, Laporte and Smalling.

I rest my case, another 3 minimum. Think im on Aguero (c). Mane may get pens ahead of Salah with his contract celebrations!

    Anderson to martial for a -4 ?

    1. The Mighty Hippo

No. Martial has been overperforming (according to stats). He's competing for a spot in the Man U attack with Lukaku, Sanchez, Lingard, Rashford etc. and will likely normalise his returns to a more typical baseline. Anderson has a great upcoming run of fixtures coming up and is one of the key members of the WH attack. It would be a possible move for a f/t, but not for a hit.

Have you looked at the stats for his last 4 seasons, he has over-performed as well. Martial is the talisman of the United attack & those players you have mentioned are not even a threat to Martial's position. As for fixtures Martial has CRYS (with Sakho. Tomkins, ZWB in doubt with injuries), sou, ARS, FULHAM, liv, cardiff, HUDD & BOU up to gw20 so he will score big points in those games.

I can see that paying off this week. Martial is the form midfielder & people say he's over-performing but this is usual for Martial because he's over-performed the last 4 seasons if you look at his stats. This week Palace have Sakho, Tomkins & AWB in doubt so you can imagine the points Martial will score. For some reason this tread is anti-Martial for some reason & the group think always says no when Martial is mentioned.

I'll use the Martial replies because the answer also relates to Richarlison.....he is over performing & will revert back to the norm soon.

      1. Ruth_NZ

Yes, but the more important question is what the norm for that player actually is. 😕

In Martial's case (who is a very good finisher and could be expected to convert 20% or so of his chances) then the norm would suit me fine, thanks. The fact that he has over-performed that recently is neither here nor there. Well, a bit more there than here actually, because I'd rather his returns had been more modest, then fewer would be interested.

As for Richarlison, he's a young, talented and improving player and I'm not sure that anyone knows what his norm is yet.

Reversion to the mean doesn't mean that after a player over-performs he under performs. It means he returns to his normal level of performance. The averaging out takes much longer. Alonso is a case in point. His early-season points (which were pretty lucky in lots of respects and not typical of his realistic expectation now) are still skewing his points total so that many on here say he is essential. He isn't. He's a defender that could conceivably justify his price but not better than that.

By the norm you obviously meant the bench 😉
