Arsenal and Chelsea both recorded more wins in the Europa League on Thursday night as they prepare for London derbies this weekend.

Neither side deployed particularly strong line-ups but there were still plenty of Fantasy talking points ahead of Gameweek 14.

Interestingly, the most influential talking point actually involved someone who didn’t even play in the midweek European matches…

Chelsea 4-0 PAOK

Goals: Olivier Giroud x2 (£7.7m), Callum Hudson-Odoi (£4.2m), Álvaro Morata (£8.7m)

Assists: Pedro (£6.3m), Cesc Fabregas (£6.3m), Hudson-Odoi

Chelsea got back to winning ways by beating PAOK 4-0 at Stamford Bridge on Thursday night. A brace from Olivier Giroud (£7.7m) was the top story as he hopes to break into the side to face Fulham on Sunday. Maurizio Sarri rang the changes for the Europa League match with only Kepa Arrizabalaga (£5.5m) keeping his place from the line-up that was thrashed 3-1 by Spurs.

Eden Hazard (£11.1m) owners will be hoping that Giroud gets to start in Gameweek 14 as he usually brings the best out of the Belgian. After averaging just 1.8 points per Gameweek in the last five, it is last chance saloon for Hazard against Fulham. The fact that Giroud was replaced by Àlvaro Morata (£8.7m) with 15 minutes left to play, despite being one goal away from a hat-trick, does imply that the Frenchman could be required when Chelsea host Fulham on Sunday. However, when asked if Thursday night’s performance had changed Sarri’s thinking about the league match, he said it did not. Hazard owners will have to hope that the Italian still considers Giroud.

“No. Because, in the last match, the problem was the team. Not one or two players. So I think that if there were two different players, it would have been the same. The big problem was the team.” – Maurizio Sarri

Sarri was also specifically asked by journalists if Giroud scoring twice would make a difference to which he said:

“No, I don’t think so. I don’t think so. In that match, I think if we were able to draw five minutes from the end, we lost.” – Maurizio Sarri

Frustratingly, it appears that Hazard himself was not even mentioned in the post-match press conference, which was also supposed to act as the pre-match media commitment for the Fulham game. We were hoping for a further update on the injury he suffered against Tottenham but it looks as if we may have to go with the comments that came out before the PAOK match. That makes formulating a plan around him and Raheem Sterling (£11.3m) a little harder than we’d like.

“Hazard is not a serious injury, I think. He will not be able to play tomorrow [v PAOK], but I think that we will be able to recover him for the next Premier League match. 25 days ago he had a back injury, now the ankle, so he has lost a lot of training. So it is normal that he isn’t at the top of his physical condition. He needs to have one week of training and a couple of matches to [recover] his best level. I think that this week it’s useful for him to have [only] training [and not play v PAOK]. Of course, I think that he cannot play ten matches in 29/30 days. So sometimes he has to rest.” – Maurizio Sarri

Another 90 minutes on the continent for Ross Barkley (£5.9m) means that he is likely to be replaced by Mateo Kovačić (£5.9m) in the Premier League on Sunday.

There were some great performances all round from Chelsea, although, as Sarri said, Fantasy managers should not read too much into what they saw on Thursday night. Pacey winger Callum Hudson-Odoi (£4.2m) particularly impressed but there appears to be no chance of seeing Hudson-Odoi in the Premier League anytime soon. While he has plenty of attacking threat, Sarri wants to see more from him defensively first.

“He played very well, but the type of match was for his characteristics. So they were down to 10 men after seven minutes, so we needed only to play in the offensive phase. He’s really very able to do this. But I want to see him in matches where we also need him in the defensive phase. I don’t know if he is able for the Premier League at 18, especially in a big team. He can be the best player in Europe in two or three years. If he’s already ready now to make a difference in the team like Chelsea, he would be the best player in Europe in two years.” – Maurizio Sarri

Chelsea XI (4-3-3): Kepa; Emerson, Christensen, Cahill, Zappacosta (Ampadu 63′); Loftus-Cheek, Fabregas, Barkley; Hudson-Odoi, Giroud (Morata 75′), Pedro (Willian 66′).

Vorskla 0-3 Arsenal

Goals: Emile Smith-Rowe (£4.5m), Aaron Ramsey (£7.3m), Joe Willock

Assists: Mohamed Elneny (£4.3m)

Unai Emery went with a very youthful side in their 3-0 win over Vorskla on Thursday night. There was not a great deal riding on the match so there was a host of largely unrecognisable names in the side. For that reason, there is only a limited amount we can glean from a Fantasy perspective as most of those who were involved are unlikely to be on our radars any time soon.

Petr Cech (£4.9m) was used in goal with a defence consisting of Ainsley Maitland-Niles (£4.4m) and Stephan Lichtsteiner (£4.5m) at full-back with Rob Holding (£4.4m) and Carl Jenkinson at centre-back. Zech Medley replaced Holding on the hour-mark so it is currently unclear who will partner Shkodran Mustafi (£5.4m) at centre-half against Spurs. The fact that Holding started in Ukraine suggests he could miss out in the Premier League for the first time since Gameweek 5. The second-half substitution could be an indication that Emery was preparing him for the north London derby, although both Mustafi and Sokratis Papastathopoulos (£5.1m) were left back home.

Aaron Ramsey (£7.3m) was the man who stuck away a first-half penalty, which he had won, but it’s hard to read too much into that considering he was by far the most senior attacking player on the pitch. In fact, it was the first penalty he has ever taken for Arsenal. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.9m), Alexandre Lacazette (£9.6m), Mesut Özil (£8.3m) and Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£6.7m) were all given the night off either as unused substitutes or absent from the matchday squad entirely. The fact that Ramsey was one of a few senior players involved among the youngsters does suggest he is in the backup squad for the time being and won’t be involved against Spurs.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£6.7m) was not involved on the night but still travelled to Ukraine which could mean he one of the names to lose his Premier League place on Sunday. For such an important game, Özil is likely to reclaim his spot.

Starts for Matteo Guendouzi (£4.5m) and Mohamed Elneny (£4.3m) in the Europa League all but confirm that Granit Xhaka (£5.3m) and Lucas Torreira (£4.9m) will patrol central midfield against Spurs.

Arsenal XI (4-2-3-1): Cech; Maitland-Niles, Holding (Medley 60′), Jenkinson, Lichtsteiner; Guendouzi (Gilmour 76′), Elneny; Smith-Rowe, Ramsey (Saka 68′), Willock; Nketiah.

Both nailed, but likely to miss the odd game over Xmas.

Fixtures - similar. Hazard better this GW, Salah better in 15.

Hazard gets bonus when he scores, Salah doesnt if he doesnt get two attacking returns (only happened once this season).

Chelsea has had a dip in form over the last weeks.

Hazard cheaper so allows better players around him in our teams. But carrying niggles and injuries it seems. Never scores with Morata on the pitch.

My friend, don`t do it before this gameweek. Managers like us, which hold Salah and Hazard till today, can be the winners at the end of this gameweek. Still so much time and so much gameweeks to buy Sterling/Sane little bit later, when Hazard and Mo fixtures become not so good.

I've got no pain, I got him in for Fraser 😉

But if I had AZ decision I would lose Hazard because he has Wolves away and City next

This is a backfire waiting to happen. But if you really want to, I'd think about which of Salah or Hazard you want more in the coming 4-5 GW, unless you are shipping both soon. This week I'd say Hazard just because he might get hooked at 60 if Chelsea leading comfortably

What would you do if Sterling is rested for Bournmouth? Or if he plays and doesn’t return? Or if Salah scores v Everton... or if Haz scores v Fulham...

It’s all good if Sterling hauls v Bournmouth of course, but selling Salah or Haz could backfire. Spectacularly.

Sell Salah for Sterling this gameweek then Hazard to Sane for GW15. You get 2 slices of the best attack in the league that way, plus you lose 2 expensive options that you probably wouldn't captain for the next 6 gameweeks anyway. Without being captainable, they have little hope of achieving their value anyway.

Effectively, yes. I already own Sterling, Salah and Hazard, so will probabaly move out Salah to Sane this afternoon, and then Hazard to a Spurs mid ahead of Southampton.

I would choose to sell hazard. He has a good run coming up but it sounds like he has niggles. The first game after his back injury he was not at his best. If he looks good then you could downgrade Salah and get him back in easily. That's not to say I'd be too precious about salah. His form is improving and will score points but personally think others players will score as well in the long run, and so the money can be better spent. I reckon sterling will play and outscore both hazard and salah this weekend. If he doesn't you've got him in while there are still other fpl players still strangley hesitant and clinging onto Salah (imo).

SCOUT PICKS CHALLENGE - GAMEWEEK 14

Annoyingly enough... GW12 results are on my laptop, alongside the completed GW13 but I forgot to post... apologies! At Manchester airport awaiting a flight to Hamburg..!

    ****** WHAT IS IT? ******

For those of you who haven't been around or aren't aware, every evening prior to the start of the gameweek FFS releases their picks of players for the gameweek, "Scout Picks", as well as 3 differentials before the first games to separate yourself from the crowd.

This is your way to have a bit of fun and challenge those scout picks with a set of your own (read instructions below). This will always open the day before the gameweek starts around 8pm, and whilst you don't have to play weekly, the more you play the better chance you have of winning!

Gameweek winners will also be awarded a spot in the Community Roundup article.

    ****** INSTRUCTIONS ******

Everyone can have their own scout picks (there is no limit on team value) but with one simple rule,

YOU CAN ONLY PICK ONE PLAYER FROM EACH TEAM
(yes, two of your players at least will be on opposing teams).

You can only have ONE submission, and your FIRST submission will be what is accepted. You also must respond DIRECTLY to this post (not to a reply on this post). FFS Scout Picks are automatically enrolled. Teams must comply with FPL formation rules and be submitted in an easy to read format, e.g.

    GK
    DEF DEF DEF
    MID MID MID MID
    FOR FOR FOR

Deadline for this gameweek is Friday 30th November, 7pm.

    ****** SCORING ******

Regardless of number of applicants, scoring will be done by the following:

    1st place: 3 points
Top 4% of the population will rank "second" and score 2 points.
Top 10% of the population will rank "third" and score 1 point.

There is also a bonus point which everyone is eligible for. If you score higher than FFS' Scout Picks AND Differential Picks (i.e. 14 players), you will be awarded with a bonus point regardless of whether you were in the top 10% scoring positions or not.

Welcome to the game, and good luck.

I don’t get Sarri. Morata is a fool so no matter how much Giroud may not be Sarri’s preferred type of player. Giroud is certainly not worse than Alvaro.

And when it’s quite clear that Giroud makes Hazard much more effective I just can’t understand why he won’t play him. Morata is the worst of two styles. He’s too slow and clumsy to be dynamic pacey forward but he’s too brittle and soft to be a hold up striker. At least Giroud holds the ball up very well to play players like Hazard, Willian and Pedro into the game.

    1. MTPockets
      7 years, 8 months ago

He did play him for 4 weeks and zero goals. Assume he's not one to pick his centre fwd on the basis of FPL assists for Hazard, and Morata scored 4 after that whatever people here think of him.

      1. KingOllie
        • 10 Years

France won the world cup with Giroud, he doesnt need to score if hes putting it on a plate for Haz and Pedro/Willian

        1. MTPockets
          7 years, 8 months ago

Except it seems he does need to score to get in Sarri's team.

Exactly this. Dechamps recognises the work Giroud does for the team. Much like Klopp with Firmino.

    2. KingOllie
      • 10 Years

Especially when Hazard said ''Giroud is the best target man in the world and i love playing with him''

Sarri then benches him for 2 months and all Hazards goals start drying up. So stupid

I would have loved to have read this a day before Giroud got a brace, now it just seems trendy.

I genuinely thought this before the brace. And this is why I was so disappointed that Giroud started last night as it indicated he wouldn’t potentially start at the weekend, or at least still wasn’t first choice. Which is disappointing as Chelsea are a better team with him rather than Morata.

    4. Always Off The Post

Totally agree. Morata isnt a hold up striker. I was convinced he would play Giroud after last night. I was on Haz captain but im going to have to change.
