Manager Melee Matchday 5: Mourinho Mourning Session

Tragic news for football fans around the globe broke this week as the Special One’s glorious reign at the theatre of dreams came to an end. Despite winning the Mickey Mouse Cup and beating Ajax’s under 13s in a second tier European competition, Jose Mourinho was dumped back on the scrap heap by Manchester United.

This will serve as a stark reminder to all our managers that football is a results business and bringing a big red bus to the party won’t cut it for our remaining 2 rounds of group stage matches!

To see the current standings for yourself please follow the link here.

Group Anichebe

Our round up starts with one of the shocks of the round as Finding Nuno managed to find some form and hold potential minnow-eaters Claudio With a Chance of Modballs to a draw. Despite scoring only 428 points to the Mod’s 451 points overall, Finding Nuno were able to benefit from a poor captaincy decision from the Mod’s as Pirlo’s Pen was able to comfortably outscore Andy.

American Dycho made short work of Dirty Zidancing in the other game in this group with a comprehensive 6.5 – 2.5 victory. Murders and Amputations were the order of the day for Dycho with Dirty Zidancing looking in danger of quickstepping out of the competition unless they can get their act together.

The next round of fixtures will see Claudio With a Chance of Modballs entertain Dirty Zidancing, whilst American Dycho’s next victim will be Finding Nuno.

Group Brunt

In our second group Guardiolas of the Galaxy were humbled by The Big Bang Thierry in a crushing 8-1 defeat. Rumours are that Chris Pratt is being called in as caretaker manager for Guardiolas of the Galaxy who couldn’t handle the expansive style of The Big Bang Thierry.

Neville Wears Prada had barely got out of hair and makeup before being Gegenpressed into submission by RoboKlopp in a 6-3 defeat. Speedyboyzz led from the front in the captaincy match up, showing no signs of rust with a score of 81 points being the highest of the round!

This coming week sees as an elimination match for Guardiolas of the Galaxy and Neville Wears Prada alongside a top of the table clash between RoboKlopp and The Big Bang Thierry.

Group Cuellar

Rumours of match fixing have tainted this group as The Godfather: Pardew extended their unbeaten start to the competition ‘hammering’ Thor: Wagnerok 5-4. Don CorLawrone was unable to comment as he was arranging a funeral.

Elsewhere in this group The Silence of The Lambert failed to make any noise and were eliminated by Howe to Train Your Dragon who are starting to get off the ground and are really clawing their way back into contention.

The Godfather: Pardew will look to extend their dubious run of victories against The Silence of The Lambert this week. Thor: Wagnerok will play against Howe to Train Your Dragon who make great use of their ‘wing’ers.

Group Demel

Despite failing to submit a teamsheet on time, the Fantasy God’s were smiling on Hughes Line is it Emery? as they defeated Alice in Wengerland. Despite being penalised and forced to field their worst OR ranked player as captain, Heels over Head did his team proud with a narrow win over Toblerone52. That makes it 3 captaincy defeats on the spin for Toblerone52 with rumours circulating that he’s being thrown down a rabbit hole as we speak.

When ‘Arry Met Sarri remain undefeated in the competition with the Jungle King and Chain Smoking Banker walking all over The Hills Have Moyes.

All teams can still qualify in this group and this week sees Hughes Line is it Emery? matched up against The Hills Have Moyes with Alice in Wengerland up against When ‘Arry Met Sarri.

Notable Performers

The Big Bang Thierry are our team of the week with an explosive, banging and really quite big score of 493 points easily enough to see off the pathetic efforts of Guardiolas of the Galaxy.

The highest scorer was Speedyboyzz with 81 points and best press conference goes to AZ who will be hoping to fight off shouts of no confidence amongst his ‘honourable’ friends. Special mention to Eunuch Jelly’s effort which can be found here.

Best of Luck for Matchday 5, except for When ‘Arry Met Sarri of course.

Toblerone52 reporting from the middle of a rabbit warren.

Don CorLawrone is away on family business. As his wizard representative and legal counsel. I can confirm that The Godfather: Pardew is displeased at these accusations. The family will seek retribution. The family advises the writer to get life insurance as accidents do happen. The family will win again this weekend if their opponents know what’s good for them.

‘Dubious run of victories’ What’s dubious is the source of these match fixing RUMOURS. I would ask that said source, if one does in fact exist, steps forward so we can further cross examine them. If safety is a concern, we’d be more than happy to meet in a public space. Say the docks, quarter past midnight? Don Corlawrone doesn’t take kindly to besmirchment of the family name, especially with the amount of resources we have so kindly donated to help organize this competition.

The writer also fails to mention Jallegre aka Sonny getting the second highest score this week. Sonny has a temper and is less reasonable. The family would like to offer the writer’s family their condolences.

Gotta say I'm bewildered by how they chose best presser. Mine got more upvotes and was never headed. Also his is not a presser it is a thinly veiled self-excuse for not doing his job. I know this is not important, but what the hell? If upvotes are not the criterion for best presser, what is it? I actually feel pretty burned by this . . .

Yep, exactly this. Maybe we should have voted on it but generally whoever writes the article makes a subjective decision. I would've voted for your one too, and suggested we give it a special mention at least. Your one was definitely the most popular and if it had been a different writer I'm sure you would have got it. I think I have to concede it was an error on our part, apologies EJ 🙁

Journo: I’m here with Klopptomist of Guardiolas of the Galaxy, who are regrouping after a frankly embarrassing defeat last week. Klopptomist, what are your thoughts on last week’s showing?

Klopptomist: Well, you know, it was a game of two halves. The boys gave 110% but we got soundly beaten in both halves. Fair play to BBT, they wanted it more and just showed that hunger, you know.

J: On a personal note, how does it feel being disassembled just days after declaring yourself “The Postman of the Galaxy” who, and I quote, “always delivers”?

K: Ah you see, it was actually Gnu-ardiola who started calling me that. I said to him “Gnu you really shouldn’t call me that, all you’ll do is jinx next week” but he just couldn’t stop worshipping me. I had to physically lift him off his knees while he was kissing my feet. Embarrassing frankly. He even bought me a little Postman Pat hat that I wore while watching the matches at the weekend.

J: So this “Postman” nickname - is it hanging around? I think “Mr Yodel” might be more appropriate - sometimes delivers, sometimes doesn’t and for all you know could just leave it in the street.

K: Now see here, that’s not fair. All I needed to win was Alonso to outscore Luiz by like 8 points. He’s done that at least once this season. As far as I’m concerned He with the Luscious Hair deserved at least a brace so all being equal I won, we won, everything’s fine.

J: Hmm, this is starting to sound a lot like Gamoriola’s interview last week...

K: Who’s Gamoriola? Oh, you mean Dumbass? Yeah I thought he/she/it was bang on the money last week. And strangely attractive.

J: Okay, ignoring the weird delusion the Guardiolas seem to have about the way points are scored, how are you feeling about this weekend’s crunch match?

K: Pretty good. We turned NWP over in the first leg. I’m hoping I can match up with COK3YSMURF again and give him another good hiding. Needed ice packs and bandages along with the Prada last time.

J: You won by one point.

K: Aye, that’s true. Unless you count Patricio’s hat-trick of assists. Anyway, I’m feeling confident - the Postman *cough*almost*cough* always delivers.

J: Thankfully that’s all we’ve got time for. Mr Yodel, I’ll have whatever they’re smoking on the Milano...

How do you other managers select your squads?

We, ex-San Diego Casuals, ex-Afghanistansilas, but now When 'Arrry met Sarri' have a simple process:

    1. Spreadsheet created by the wonderful Chetan where we all update our team line-ups, and posible transfers.
    2. Vote for (C) and 3 benchers 24hrs via Whatsapp before GW deadline. Democracy in action. And it works well.
    3. Submit email to organisers.

I really am curious/interested as to the selection process(es) from other managers.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Ours is far more primitive! 😀

When somebody's team is ready they send a screenshot to our WhatsApp group and about 30 minutes before the deadline I have a thumb through the pictures and pick three to bench. Greyhead also has been giving us some stats based on our performances. There's usually a standout captaincy that someone has mentioned previously, sometimes we discuss that a bit.

We have a spreadsheet where teams are updated. Benchers are generally made up of volunteers. Captain options suggested then a poll/votes made.

Prof Bear has the final say on cap and starters though.

Back in the day me and Bonz used to run a dictatorial system. Ran a spreadsheet with everyones teams which we would review together on a thursday/friday in google spreadsheet chat.

First question would be whether we want the wildcards to play. These are the non template teams that have volatile weeks, both really strong and really weak. Usually this was me and Teddy. We found it was always good to have a few of these players available as they can turn a gameweek. Not all about high ranked template teams....

Next we'd go through the template teams and fill out with the best marginal gains. Least injuries, best 4.0m defenders for the week etc.

      Easy peasy.

We have a spreadsheet too. Courtesy of Bend it like Bennett.
We update all teams each week, and then come together on the chat group about 1 hour before deadline to pick the team. Nice to have some great FPL minds on the team as it makes picking easy.

We all post our teams and discuss them each briefly (screenshots + a spreadsheet that Arc kindly made for the group). The captaincy is mostly a group decision, then the manager (me!) posts a list of 1-8 with who I think should be in and why. In general those who've taken hits get benched, not too much point trying to second guess differentials and so on in teams with hits. Then there may be an amendment or two. As for the order, I can't tell you our amazing methods. 😉 Although RNG has certainly been used at some point!

      Group A update.

Finding Nuno looking at a 6-3 or
      5-4 win over American Dycho.

Dirty Zidancing looking at 6-3, more likely a 5-4 win over the mods.

Means it goes down to last gw (Boxing Day)
DZ need to win by a lot and AD need to lose by a lot. Maybe as high as 0-9/9-0 each.

Wild finish to the match-up between The Big Bang Theirry and Roboklopp

The pashunoid androids were pummeling us till the Spurs game turned the tables everywhere.
        Cap fixture was incredible.

Our man had a 6 point lead with opponent having Rashford and Digne. Rashford scored 6 and Digne -1, handing us the win.

Very bad luck for a very good opponent. This H2H format throws up weird results.

Well played RoboKlopp. Deserved winners and qualifiers. We just could not get it going this year.

Massive thanks to the organisers for running the comp, especially over this crazy fixture period.

Just need to get back on a pc now to lose this hideous grav (sorry Klop)

How rude. But same. Missing Klopp’s great big smile

Excellent, just in time for Gloria Kanchelskis to return from his spell on the sidelines.

Group Brunt has been very exciting.

Many close games, many games that were closer than the final score.
Congratulations to Roboklopp on joining us in the next round. Great performance in the decider.
Commiserations to GotG and NWP. Well played. Especially NWP who beat us in both legs. Cheers to Klopptomist for keeping the banter going.
We'll face each other sometime in a future tournament.

I wonder when the QF draw will be. Is there gonna be a seeding system or is it an open draw?
