Manchester City’s victory over Liverpool last night marked the end of a hectic festive period in which 40 Premier League matches were contested across 14 days.

FA Cup third round weekend now brings some welcome respite in which to take a cursory look at the weeks and months ahead.

We’re only six Gameweeks away from the first mini-blank of the season, with the final of the EFL Cup set to be contested on the same weekend as Gameweek 27 in the Premier League.

Barring any seismic shocks in the semi-finals of the EFL Cup, Manchester City’s Gameweek 27 match against Everton will be one of the Premier League games to fall victim of that schedule clash.

Burnley v Spurs or Chelsea v Brighton could also be affected, depending on which of the London sides triumphs in their forthcoming semi-final.

Gameweeks 31 and 33 will also very likely be blanks for some top-flight teams, with the FA Cup quarter-finals and semi-finals set to take place on those weekends.

At the moment, the much-anticipated “double Gameweeks” look likely to be in Gameweeks 32 and 35, given that the midweeks following those scheduled Premier League fixtures are the only ones not affected by European club competition or the March international break.

Forward-planning is not just about navigating the blanks and doubles, of course, but factoring in which top-flight sides have a congested fixture schedule around their league games.

Spurs, Chelsea and Manchester City are in EFL Cup action twice in January, while those three clubs plus Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal recommence their UEFA Champions League/Europa League campaigns from the middle of February onwards.

We’ve cobbled together a calendar for the remaining Gameweeks of the 2018/19 season, though in some cases (Premier League fixtures from Gameweek 29 onwards, FA Cup from fourth round onwards) the dates are subject to change due to the whims of the relevant television broadcasters.

The FA Cup, Europa League and Champions League finals take place after the Premier League season ends, on Saturday May 19, Wednesday May 29 and Saturday June 1 respectively.

The excellent Ben Crellin is an invaluable resource at this time of year, particularly his “percentages” spreadsheets regarding the chances of all 20 Premier League clubs being without a fixture on a blank Gameweek.

Would you go Mane over Salah (can't afford Salah without multiple hits), if you'd captain Kane and Haz in the near future?

    Gw 22: Haz New (H)
    Gw 23: Kane Ful (A)
    Gw 24: Kane Wat (H)/Haz Bou (A)
    Gw 25: Kane New (H)/Haz Hud (H)
    Gw 26: Kane Lei (H)
    Gw 27: Kane Bur (A)/Haz Brighton (H)

I know Salah is clearly the better option, but I think it's makes no sense tearing apart your team to fit him in, especially with those captaincy options in Haz, Kane and probably Manchester United attackers.

    Also,

    Last 4 GWs:

    Salah 13.3
    Minutes played 360
    xG from open play 1.16
    BPS baseline 16
Goal attempts in the box 9

    Mane 9.5
    Minutes played 316
    xG from open play 1.27
    BPS baseline 38
Goal attempts in the box 8

I know at the end of the day, total points matters; but maybe, just maybe Mane could be worth getting if you don't wanna spend multiple hits to get Salah in?

Can also accumulate funds to get Salah in for Mane later if Salah keeps getting hattricks every week and becomes essential.

TLDR: Mane in only because I can't afford Salah without taking a -12 which I don't want to.

Would love your thoughts on this.
    Cheers.

Great work and you make some excellent observations however without seeing the rest of your team it's hard to give a view. I too been looking how to bring Salah in and considering Mane but gut telling me Salah the way forward.

Cheers mate. Obviously Salah looks the best bet, but again, I don't wanna take those -12's for him that too taking out good players to get im Salah and fodders just for hits.
Another thing is, he restricts you captaining anyone else. Those 3 consecutive home games look tasty for Spurs.

    Better option?

    A) Keep Alonso long term

    B) Double up on Pool defence with TAA & Robbo/VVD.

Yeah true, I misread. I had Robbo since the beginning so getting TAA now is better value. But not sure swapping Alonso for VVD or Robbo now would be as profitable.

Has this become a midfielder game rather than big hitting strikers ?
Points totals and PPM seem to indicate this in terms of value for money.
Returns from cheaper forwards do tend to correlate with the overall strength of fixtures but there seems to be a lot more value in mids backed up with attacking wing backs.

    1. Rosey Palmer

Probably.. PPV keepers and defenders are best value for money 4-5-1 is probably the optimal in reality but none of us doing it. Gives an awful bench though as you end up with super cheap strikers around 4.5 mark

Disagree - I've got a front 3 of Kane, Rashford and Auba - no Salah or Hazard. I've jumped over the Christmas period from 100,000 to about 31,000.

I lost ground in my overall OR not having Hazard for longer than I should have, but lacking Salah didn't hurt me too much since only 1 rival in my ML had him. Of course now more than half have got Salah in. I stuck with Auba, Kane, Hazard.

I agree with this. I think an issue FPL now has to look at is that a lot of the "midfielders" are actually forwards in real life terms. Having players like Salah, Hazard and Sterling in the same position as Henderson, Kante and Fernandinho is getting a bit bizarre (despite the price differences).

Also, I'm starting to find it a little unfair that forwards just earn the 4pts per goal where midfielders earn 5pts and a possible clean sheet point. People like Kane, Aubameyang, Salah,Hazard etc. should be using the same scoring method.

Just to add, I think if FPL are going to be consistent with their reclassification of players each season (like Arnie and Zaha becoming forwards) surely the likes of Salah and Hazard will be forwards next season?

The game has changed somewhat in this respect. There is frequently a very blurred line between mids and forwards. I agree that this needs addressing.

Have an upvote, I think this is hot topic standard. Great post and it really interests me how FPL might go over the next few years to tackle this. I think they either need to add an 'attacking midfielder' position to the game or go with (what I think is) the Sky route and have a lot more of these attacking mids as forwards. I still think the scoring needs balancing though. Salah shouldn't be gaining a point for a clean sheet when Aguero doesn't 🙂

I think that's why 3-5-2 or 4-5-1 are formations which work very well this season. There is a huge risk in going too light up top though, since Kane, Aguero and Auba could easily start on a run where they getting braces and assists while being selected as a captain option by many. My preference so far has been to have one of the premium strikers (Kun initially and then Kane) but then put the bulk of my remaining funds in midfield and in wingbacks.

I've played pretty much 3-4-3 all season and am doing ok. No way is right or wrong - to me it's all about balance and timing

Yeah, that's true - the beauty of this game is that you can play it in many different ways. I took a conscious decision to primarily set up in a 3-5-2 this season with a strong midfield and I've been in the top 5k since GW3, which is why I'm advocating that line up. You're correct though, team balance and the timing of transfers in and out are crucial.

From GW14 to GW 19, I had a front 3 of Kane, Auba, Laca with no premium mids, I took 12pts of hits during that time, and I still went from 95K to 20K. I'm not saying that this proves that premium forwards are good value and that premium mids aren't good value but it does prove that if one employs their strategy carefully, loading up on forwards can deliver strong results.

I think he's quality, he'll get points but Pogba was bossing things and Rashford is more direct I think. Personally, I prefer Martial but since Pogba rose 5 times in a month and his ownership has gone through the roof I may have to swap him in.

    Fab
    Doherty, AWB, digne, alonso, TAA
    Rich, Fanderson, Pogba, Hazard, elneny
    Kane, Rash, Mitro

Was thinking mitro and hazard > aguero and mane/sane.
Or mitro and alonso > Aguero and luiz/robbo

Want a Liverpool forward. But worried about no hazard as ML rivals have him! Thoughts? Thank you!!

It's not foolish to lose him. His PPG are bloated due to early season returns. There are other defenders who cost less who are proving better value as of late.

I resisted getting rid of Alonso for a long time for that very reason (and Scoutcast constantly reminding us of his points total compared to similarly priced mids). Then a few weeks ago I needed the cash to get some ManU players in and "downgraded" to Luiz. Has gotten me more attacking returns and they get the same clean sheets. No regrets.

Alonso probably do for a big haul soon, but if you take out the first few weeks he's returning less than Luiz, who's doing much better in FFS than last year.

I think Luiz or a second Liverpool defender instead of Alonso is not foolish at all.
