The recent injury to Tottenham’s main man Harry Kane has reduced the Gameweek 23 captaincy debate to a one-sided affair.

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah appears the favourite ahead of this weekend’s deadline but it is still worth digging deeper.

In this latest Captain Sensible article, we analyse how each Fantasy Premier League asset has performed for underlying statistics for the last four Gameweeks, also examining the team they play for and the side they are facing…

Captain Poll

Mohamed Salah (13.4m) has completely and utterly dominated the Gameweek 23 captain poll, looking set for the biggest winning margin of the season.

The Egyptian has so far managed to garner support from 64% of voters, at the current time of writing.

Those that have plumped for him as the best option will obviously be looking at his form over the last seven Gameweeks, which has seen him score a total of 72 points.

Liverpool host Crystal Palace this week in a fixture that gives Jurgen Klopp’s men a strong chance of three points.

Likely because of Harry Kane‘s (£12.5m) recent injury, which will see him out until March, our voters don’t really see a viable alternative to Salah.

That is clearly shown by the fact that currently second in our poll is Paul Pogba (£8.5m) with just over a 6% share.

The Manchester United man could certainly prove a handy differential skipper in Gameweek 23. He has produced an attacking return in all but one league match since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over at Old Trafford, and this week the Red Devils host Brighton.

Marcus Rashford (£7.5m) is also receiving similar attention, convincing 4.5% of our voters to suggest he is the best captain this weekend.

The England international has in four of the last five matches, and has assisted twice more. On current form, he seems to have held off competition from Romelu Lukaku (£10.7m) and seems to be the most popular replacement for Kane among the FPL community.

Interestingly, Sergio Aguero (£11.2m) is considered the most popular captain option from Manchester City, despite the form of Gabriel Jesus (£10.1m).

He has 3.8% backing in the poll, keeping him ahead of Leroy Sané (£9.6m) on 2.4% and Raheem Sterling (£11.3m) on 1.8%.

    My Current Team:
    Patricio
    Robertson Alonso Digne
    Hazard Sane Richarlison Pereyra

So I have 2FTs and 1.9m in the bank.

Around that price, no. Kamara was better but looks to be a lot of bad attention around him at the club right now. Solanke might slot in, by February time, but would just keep Success if you WANT a bench fodder... (or go cheap with a 5th MID instead).

Of course, my Alli dilemma is easily solved by absolutely gutting the bench (Speroni, Punch, AWB, Connolly) and shoehorning in Sterling (c) for Sane, because instead of worrying about Alli blanking, I'll replace that with the anxiety over Sterling being benched 😀

In case anyone find this helpful, I'm just going to recycle some thoughts from something I posted on a HT which i didn't realise was dead!

This is about picking bench fodder, why I think the bench fodder should generally be forwards and not midfielders, and why we should be gambling given the shortage of sure starters in the 4.5-5m bracket.

It's not how I'm set up at the moment, but it's generally important to maximise the number of playing midfielders. This is for several reasons, the main things for me being that midfielders more than ever are playing in the front three of an attacking team (and FPL hasn't really caught up with this phenomenon with its scoring system).

Given that some midfielders can score as many goals as many strikers do, you can add an extra point per goal and the occasional clean sheet point as well.

So If we are playing with five midfielders you can only have two forwards. One of those HAS to be bargain basement in my opinion. We discussed a while back the issue of a playing vs. a weak bench. My argument for a weak bench was that you often need to pay a lot of money for the player to consistently outscore the most likely possible score which is 2 points. If you are counting on a player coming off the bench, you don't have the luxury of significant investment in that player, nor are you likely to have chosen him for the fixture in question.

This means that as long as you can be fairly sure of getting 2 points off your bench, with an outside chance of further returns, this is enough.

With all this said - I wouldn't spend more than about 5m and it's unfortunate timing that there are no secure 4.5-5m options available at the moment.

So if you're picking a budget third striker, go leftfield. Maybe go for low ownership. Does it matter if your third striker gets one or two points off your bench considering the fact that a.) it's one point and b.) you probably won't need that point anyway.

The jump from a 5 mil crap forward or a 4.4 non player to Ings at 5.5 is worth it if you have the TV to afford it.

Team dependant I think. Also you are potentially overlooking the value of a strong first bench player. Especially given that spending that value in midfield will probably mean one or two city players who have a track record of not coming on for cameos.

            1. Deulofail
              • 9 Years
              6 years, 10 months ago

5.5 on a first sub is a lot though. I can see that it would be viable if rotating him with another player, like a 5.0 defender or another 5.0-5.5 attacker, but otherwise I think it's wasted money. You can get a strong 1st sub for 4.4m in AWB or one that's more assused of starts in Bennett at 4.2, and others at 3.9-4.5. That's why the 8th attacking spot is so frequently complete pap. You can get the same or more for a million (or more) less from defenders.

TL:DR saw cheap forward completely disagree. See so many teams posted on here with 3/5 mids sucking balls and usual response is great team. I laugh at teams with Kamara.

This is all reasonable, and an approach what most seasoned managers stik to I'd guess. Guess the 5th mid of choice currently is Camarasa, who is fairly nailed, no?

      1. _Make
        • 8 Years
        6 years, 10 months ago

True, and I'm currently a big ol' liar because I have McNeil and three up top.

        However...

I think the key to long-term FPL success is maximising the value propositions for players - to make every pound work for you. It's very hard for forwards to do that for two reasons:

firstly there is often a similarly-priced midfielder scoring as many goals and getting more points per game; and

secondly, and more importantly, the most advanced they can play up the pitch is equal to where they are expected to play (and are priced as playing). Midfielders can outplay their expected position and therefore be automatically better value than their initial pricing predicts.

Factor in as well the fact that we don't use our benches as much as we expect and also the fact that, as I say, the most common single score for any player is 2, and we don't get to choose when our bench fodders get to come off the bench, overspending here is a waste.

        imHo

        1. Pompel
          • 11 Years
          6 years, 10 months ago

But keep in mind you have a budget to spend. Normally you'll have a couple of midfielders who outscore their expected points compared to premium mids, e.g. Fraser and now also Pogba. It is always important to have those two-three midfield value gems in your team, which will give you enough to spend for a premium striker like Auba or Kane, even if their value/million is relatively low.

          1. Deulofail
            • 9 Years
            6 years, 10 months ago

I don't think it's important. It's only importnt to be flexible, but what you're proposing is an inflexible constant.

I've avoided all attacking players from 5.0-8.0 this season unless they are from top teams (e.g. Martial, Mkhitaryan, Ramsey, Rashford), with the exception of Hughes at the start of the season (who never came into my XI - waste), Jimenez for one week, and Arnautovic, Antonio, Anderson and Snodgrass for around a few weeks each.

Never owned Richarlison, Wilson, Fraser, Siggy, Deulofeu, Pereyra, or any other popular players in that zone. Only Wilson and Fraser were really any good anyway, so ready to consider pouncing on them if they look useful in the future. You're in charge of your own team, and there are multiple routes to ponts, but I think two-three value midfield gems would have held the average manager back this season.

    Benching headache
    Does this look right?

    Fabianski
    Shaw/Digne/Robertson
    Salah/Pogba/Anderson/Richarlison
    Rashford/Jimenez/Firminio

    Pereyra/Doherty/AWB

Is that good starting 11 and bench order?

Did TAA & Kane --> VVD & Aubameyang (-4) last night.

Have a bit of a benching headache now. Am I G2G?

    Fabianski (Patricio)
    VVD Robbo Doherty (Digne AWB)
Salah (c) Richarlison Pogba Lingard (Gudmundsson)
    Aubameyang Jimenez Rashford

Anything from the Cardiff/Warnock presser yet?

Hoping to hear more on Camarasa and less about his politics 🙂

I've left myself with a real Benching Headache by somehow acquiring a front 8. I have literally no idea who to bench. Thoughts? My front 8 is
    Salah,
    Sane,
    Pogba,
    Rashford,
    Auba,
    Anderson,
    Jimenez,
    Richarlson.

I currently have richarlson on the bench but it could possible be any of the bottom 3. Auba would be next but don't think I could ever bench him.

Hi all. I’m not a big fan of asking for help, but looking for a bit of confirmation bias from some fellow addicts.

I’m more or less pot committed to bringing in Salah this week (6.9m itb) but need to lose one of my 5 punty midfielders

    Hazard, Anderson, Sane, Martial, Richarlison

I can make a case for binning any and all of them. Does anyone have a strong opinion? I genuinely veer between all 5 and holding off. Have moved Kane for Rashford which I convinced myself would cover Pogba. (I know) and used one of my 2 FT to get in Trent for Alonso. (I KNOW!) rest of my team is in my profile.

Martial first based on security of starts and Rich second based on his crapness. Don't lose Haz Sane or Andersen imo and get Pogba in asap

Thanks, I wanted Pogba but couldn't afford him. Cleverly brought in Martial instead for Brooks along with Holebas for Kolasinac. Both returned but so did Kolasinac. Brooks and Pogba hauled that week.

Thanks, I think I'm clinging to Martial because he owes me. I'm just worried that he has a better fixture than Salah, but is way less captainable.

Not one of those midfielders is punty, mate. Except maybe Tony Marshall. I'd lose him, stat.

Appreciate that, thanks. I feel a bit naked without an obvious captain so your advice is most welcome.

I had similar dilemma and decided to ditch Martial instead of Richarlison. Reason being Martial mins are being managed, Sanchez is fit again and could eat up more of his game time plus he seems to be playing more as a creator under Ole than a goal scorer (now watch him score). Rich has been frustrating to own but if he keeps getting chances he will get goals & Southampton had a long game mid week so could be tired legs.

Thanks. I feel better knowing we're in the same boat! I've had a couple of texts from ML rivals who also made the same TAA blunder (almost certainly because I'd made it known that I was getting shot of Alonso before his price drop) so I don't anticipate losing too much ground. You've been a great help.

Already on -4 before the Kane injury. Should i just wait till next week now? As i can play Digne/Doherty instead? Would prob get Firmimo and it would be a -8.

Have one more drop in Kane before i start losing money. Bought for 12.4 he's currently 12.5.

Sorry lost on a previous page.

Similar issue. -4 to get Salah and Rash, I sold Son and Auba - which now looks awful in the case of the latter.
