FPL Question Time – Planning for future Blank and Double Gameweeks

With Double Gameweek 25 yet to conclude on Wednesday night, Fantasy Premier League managers are thinking more long-term this week.

The latest edition of Question Time sees us discuss the future Blank and Double Gameweeks, and the best strategies for planning for them.

That includes how we can use our free transfers to get us through the period which contains Blank Gameweek 27 and Blank Gameweek 31, as well as when to use the chips.

We’ve also looked at what goalkeepers can help Fantasy managers out, with very few obvious candidates right now, with Eden Hazard (£10.9m) also discussed.

Who’s on the panel this week?

Joe – A long-time contributor to these pages, Scoutcaster and host of our Meet the Manager video series. Joe came into Gameweek 25 ranked 10,185 in the world and has seven top 10k finishes to his name already, one of which was an OR of 840 in 2013/14.

WGTA Nick – One half of the double act that is Who Got the Assist?, the popular website, podcast and Twitter account.

FPL Family – Lee and Sam are the well-known married couple who play Fantasy football together and run a YouTube channel documenting their thoughts. They have appeared on the Official FPL show this season, most recently as last Thursday. We’ve got Lee this time!

Question 1 – Joe

Vankush: The fear of Blank Gameweek 31 is hindering me getting in players in the run-up to it. When is it best to start thinking about the dreaded blanks and which players will form the core?

Joe: “Be aware of the upcoming Blank and Double Gameweeks from here on in, but don’t start the detailed planning until shortly before the Gameweek 27 deadline.

“That’s when FA Cup fifth round matches will be completed and we will know all those who will face a Blank in Gameweek 31 and those to likely miss out in Gameweek 33.

“From that point, we can start planning which of our remaining chips we use to navigate those Gameweeks and the Double fixtures, which are likely to be scheduled in Gameweeks 32 and 35.

“Until then be flexible and give yourself options around chip use by investing in good players from teams that play in Gameweek 31 and those that could miss a fixture.

“There are eight teams that definitely play then: West Ham, Huddersfield, Bournemouth, Newcastle, Burnley, Leicester, Fulham and Liverpool.

Of those Liverpool have an abundance of options. If you haven’t already doubled up Mohamed Salah with either Sadio Mane or Roberto Firmino that is a move I’d recommend. A Reds defender also looks a must. With Bournemouth, Watford and Burnley at home before Gameweek 31 tripling up could pay off handsomely.

“From Gameweek 30 Bournemouth have superb fixtures and look an ideal source of value players with Josh King and Ryan Fraser perhaps the key options.

“An attacking Leicester defender such as Ricardo Pereira or Ben Chilwell also look strong from Gameweek 27 onwards, when they face Crystal Palace, Brighton and Fulham at home ahead of their Gameweek 31 visit to Burnley.

“By focusing on a handful of these players you give yourself the luxury of being able to also invest in some key players who are likely to miss out in Gameweek 31.

“With Fulham, Crystal Palace and Southampton in their next four, Manchester United’s Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford look great options to get in.

“Similarly, with Leicester, Burnley and Southampton over Spurs’ next five I see Son Heung-min as an important player to own.

“Above all be flexible so that when Blank and Double Gameweek details emerge you will be in the best position possible.”

Question 2 – Nick

Rash: Going off the information we have so far, what is the optimum chip strategy if you hold a Wildcard, Free Hit, Triple Captain and Bench Boost?

Nick: “With all the chips intact, I would set out my team to ensure that I have coverage in both the upcoming Blank Gameweeks (27 and 31), looking at the likes of Liverpool, Bournemouth and Leicester as examples of teams which we know are going to play.”

“The first big Double looks set for Gameweek 32, so this would be a great moment to Wildcard, in my opinion.

“However, there is a blank in Gameweek 33 so that is perhaps the time to use the Free Hit, so you don’t have to shift things too much for the next Double in Gameweek 35, which looks good for the Bench Boost.

“It is worth mentioning that Chelsea may also have another Double at some point which might present itself as a good opportunity to use the Triple Captain chip if you haven’t used it already.”

Question 3 – FPL Family

FPL Virgin: For those of us with a less-than-enviable rank, is it time to start hitting the differentials yet?

Lee: “While I don’t think the panic button should be hit just yet, it could well be time to start looking closer at the TSB percentages.

“If, after all your analysis, you simply can’t decide between two players for your transfer in this week, then go with the player that has the lowest ownership.

“Your risk profile also plays a part here – just how ‘differential’ do you want to be? For some, it might be Triple Captain Crouch time, but for most it will be a calculated risk.

“West Ham, for example, have some great fixtures coming up over the next half a dozen Gameweeks, yet Felipe Anderson is owned by only 12.2% of FPL managers at time of writing.

“Many indeed, have elected to sell the Brazilian which, given his form, seems a sensible decision – yet his encouraging display against Liverpool in Gameweek 25 might suggest that we are about to hit another streak of form.

“As ever, getting on a form player early is going to be key, differentials tend only to be differentials for a week or two in FPL, before the masses pile in.

“Taking early, calculated gambles on players with decent looking fixtures should help FPL managers recover their Overall Ranks – but seriously, Triple-Captain Peter Crouch!”

Question 4 – Joe

Rahmat Aziz: Apart from Ryan (as I already have Duffy), what Goalkeeper is best to replace Ederson after Double Gameweek 25?

Joe: “The easy answer is to spend a little more and get the game’s highest-scoring goalkeeper Liverpool’s Allison, who is guaranteed to play every week as the Reds have no blank fixtures.

“But if you want to spend less then make sure you keep a close eye on fixtures as well as save and bonus point potential.

“In terms of fixtures, Gameweeks 26 through to Gameweek 33 is a good section to look at as it will take many Fantasy managers up to the likely deployment of their second Wildcard.

Leicester, Newcastle, Huddersfield, West Ham, Crystal Palace and Burnley look the best bets for clean sheets, aside from Brighton, over that run.

“Of those, Eagles number one Vicente Guaita looks the stand-out pick, in terms of value and having accrued four shut-outs in the eight starts since he took the number one jersey from Wayne Hennessey in Gameweek 17.

“Guaita has also notched save points on four occasions, helping him to earn two bonus against Cardiff in Gameweek 19. But with a possible blank in Gameweek 31, it may pay to ensure you have a playing second goalkeeper to cover him then.

“Another option I like is Watford’s Ben Foster, who offers clean sheet potential against Everton, Cardiff, Leicester, Southampton and Fulham and the chance of save points against Liverpool and the two Manchester clubs up to and including Gameweek 33.

“Over the last six matches, Foster was joint top for saves (27) alongside Manchester United’s David De Gea and has kept two clean sheets. Also in Foster’s favour is his collection of bonus points on five occasions across the campaign.

“Be aware though he may also miss Gameweek 31 due to FA Cup postponements.

“A final option to mention is Burnley’s Tom Heaton, who only faces two tough games over his next ten matches and is guaranteed a fixture in Gameweek 31. Since he became a regular starter in Gameweek 20 he has earned two shut-outs, save points on four occasions and three bonus points.

Question 5 – Nick

Greg: Hazard did well against Huddersfield but his next three look tough. Do I sell him to raise some much-needed funds and switch the team up?

Nick: “I no longer own Hazard so would recommend you keep as he is clearly going to haul big!

“Joking aside, I can understand the logic behind wanting to sell Hazard. Their fixtures in the next three Gameweeks are Manchester City, Blank and Spurs, so it is worth considering some of the options out there.

“The likes of Son and Pogba are looking like key assets to own so if you don’t have them already I would be making space for them and freeing up some cash in the process.

“Son has seven goals in as many games and has really stepped up as the Spurs talisman in Kane’s absence.

“Pogba is now matching Salah for shots on target across the whole season, nobody has more than their 39 each. Manchester United have Fulham up next who have conceded the most goals in the league with 55, so Pogba definitely a player I would recommend in the midfield if you don’t already own him.”

Question 6 – Family

Rigid Digit: Who are the viable third strikers? Ings is proving fragile and I’m not convinced by Deeney, so I’m considering Rondon. Any other options in the £6.0m or less bracket worth a look?

Lee: “Danny Ings just can’t stay fit can he? I feel for him as he was just starting to make that forward spot in Hassenhüttl’s team his own – and the Saints themselves are showing some good form.

“Both Deeney and Rondon are viable alternatives, with the Venezuelan my preferred option here – Newcastle have some excellent looking fixtures coming up, including Huddersfield, Burnley and Everton at home in the next five Gameweeks.

“Outside of those two, it’s slim pickings. Harry Kane has been pictured doing some light training in Dubai, with some media outlets reporting he could be back as soon as the Dortmund game in the Champions League on 13th February – so you would think that puts an end to Fernando Llorente’s brief spell as an FPL option up top for Spurs.

“Ashley Barnes remains a steady, if slightly underwhelming pick for Burnley. Only one double-digit haul for Barnes across the whole season (back in Gameweek 6), but goals more recently against Arsenal, Man Utd and Southampton keeps him ticking over – so at £5.6m, you can’t complain.

“You could also go ultra-cheap with Peter Crouch or Dom Solanke, who will see the odd minute or two, the latter maybe more so while Callum Wilson is injured – but I would encourage you to keep your expectations low with those two.

“If you can find a bit more cash down the back of the sofa, West Ham’s Chicarito is only £6.1m and a decent value option which Arnautovic remains sidelined. Michy Batshuayi also joined Palace on transfer deadline day and was very kindly priced in my opinion at £6.5m, he came on for eight minutes in his debut last GW and picked up an assist against Fulham.

“I foresee a lot of game time for the Belgian between now and the end of the season, which could see him make a mockery of that price tag.”

"After keeping a clean sheet for League 2 Newport against Championship Middlesbrough, goalkeeper Joe Day had to run off the pitch rather than celebrate because his wife went into labour during the match with twins"

That clean sheet won't last long.

Yeah I definitely am but team structure restricts it right now.

Sane, sterling, ings > Auba, mane, jota (-8) is a possibility but not too keen on taking that hit and fancy sterling to nick something against Chelsea. If Bournemouth can thrash chelsea 4 nil think city are equally capable in current form

Hi folks, being a recovering gambling addict, and nearly 6.5 years now gambling free now, i highly commend the Scoutcast tonight and all the issues it confronted in relation to Mental Health. It did feel like a GA meeting, like many I've attended, in terms of the honesty and the advice, which is a great thing, as if even one person can relate to, it's done its job. I do like playing FPL, and similar to my situation with gambling, as in the 12 steps, i accept that i'm powerless to control the luck or chance element of the game, I can always look forward to the next gameweek and hope I can do better. FPL does give me much interest in most football matches, much more than the Liverpool team I support. It's a great hobby, great community, love the FFS videos, i'm always interested in people's opinions. We are family, we are one. We are FPL 🙂

It was a fantastic section on the impact of FPL on our mental health, as well as how it can affect managers from the most experienced down to those just starting.

For those that missed the Scoutcast, this link will take you directly to that section.

Thanks, yeh i agree, had Sane (c) Kun (vc) this GW25, i'm kind of in the halfway boat really, getting Kun points, but not Kun Captain pts. I'm grateful though, as a lot dont even have Kun points. All I can hope for is a Sane supershow tomorrow 🙂

Yeh haha, although unlikely, a Sane no show can get me 17pts and Kun Everton pts doubled. Alternatively, i could get a Sane double digit haul doubled, and Kun Everton points. Not too bad either way 🙂

I have felt similar pain though IT, i took out Salah and Robbo as part of a -8 before Bournemouth earlier in the season to get Sane and Sterling in, as Salah had blanked loads, and I wanted to spread the money to cash in on the City decent games - Palace/Leics (as many others did). Must have lost around 40-50 on that -8 🙁

Not so. I still have the scars of selling Kane ahead of his double hat-trick last year. I'm with Joe - sometimes you just have to find the humour in it.

I did that too Lord - Kanexit was a bad move for me. Yes, I had to just laugh off how unlucky it was 🙂 ...I also TC'd Kane on his DGW early January last season when he had the sniffles.

I definitely spend a lot of time thinking about transfers and actual player performances (too much really), but its not costing me financially, which is what gambling did. i'm quite a competitive person so I always want to do well, but I'm happy in the belief that the luck should even itself out eventually throughout the season. It brings a great interest to games throughout all the weekend. T

Thanks Taff. I totally agree - Az has had some downright awful bad luck, but what he says on the scoutcast is completely logical. Az's time will come. Im currently 409K (just a bit lower than Az), with BB/FH/WC left, and if i can get 150K it will be my best season ever. Ideally though I was hoping to get top 10K at the start of the season. We will see what happens.

Definitely Taff, there's always next season. If i can get 150K that will be a PB and that's all I can ask for. I can take the experience and try to do better in situations next season. I believed the hype on Aguero's goalscoring v Newcastle earlier in the season and I got a paltry 6 x 3 = 18, so I always know im gonna lose points on the TCers this week and to come. I was 10K rank at the time, as I had a great start to the season (was 5k first game wk with over 100 point), and thought I would take a punt to get closer to the top but my impatience didnt pay off LOL.

If it's any consolation, top 10k is not as easy as some of the veterans on here and Twitter imply.

You can make top 100k with those chips left. A nice slice of luck needed yes, but the gap isn't as big or insurmountable as you think. Keep pluggin away.

Hey stranger.. Yep it's far harder these days, every man and his dog now has easy access to all the secret weapons previously only available to a relative few and get spoon fed reminders and tips constantly.

Well that's my excuse anyway 😉

Spoonfeeding is definitely annoying. The chances of ML rivals not noticing a DGW is minimal nowadays. I still think that the great FFS community and sources elsewhere like FPL Family, Andy, FPL General and James Egensdorff, can give us an edge on the 'casuals'/ghost ships 🙂

              You're not wrong WR.

A lot more informed managers out there and it just keeps making the upper echelons of the game more and more luck based. Not complaining, we had it good back in the day but in 2019 you can't just get the bonus darlings, the value picks and the in form premiums and sit back and watch the great OR happen. You gotta nail so many decisions now, the chips and most importantly the captaincy < It's becoming more and more signficant when I remember captain blanks being a common and tolerable occurence.

I can see it on a smaller scale in work ML. Every man and his dog was talking about what City players they were getting for DGW. In years gone by, I would have been sitting tittering away to myself about them not knowing. We have to find new edges but I'm struggling.

This is my first ever 'hulking' - thanks very much mods for doing this. I felt very passionate on this issue, and tonight's Scoutcast has maybe helped people to re-evaluate that we can step back a bit (albeit slightly) from FPL and then accept we will probably get roughs with the smooths.

Hi mate. One thing I did a few weeks ago was turn my phone off for a whole Saturday. Usually every prem goal will ping through and I'll be eagerly anticipating the scorer etc. I had a perfect day with the family. No messages from mates, no footy updates (which was extremely hard to avoid I must add). BUT I'll tell you what pal.... match of the day was amazing. I hadn't been able to enjoy MOTD like that since I was a kid.

It's a suggestion I'd make to anyway who just needs some time out when things aren't going great in FPL. It's only several hours away from it, but it was a great experience and nostalgic not knowing who had scored by the evening 🙂

hi supermane, great post... have you found FPL provides a perfect replacement to gambling, i.e it has allowed you to overcome your previous addition by encouraging you to channel you efforts and interest in football elsewhere? I am in a similar boat...

Yes exactly DDFC, it's a cost free (actually money, although can be troubling mentally sometimes when trying to overthink) replacement. Whereas now I'm hoping for players to help my team score, I essentially know its for fun. But in my dark days, I was betting on things like number of cards, corners etc, and wasnt even interested in the game, just fixated on where the ball was or if someone was to lunge in etc. How long have you been in recovery DDFC?

exactly right!! I think my last bet was at the world cup, and the addiction had been an ongoing thing for years before, with many peaks and troughs... it feels so good to have a more content and constant life without the stresses and pressures of gambling (albeit still having to pay off debt encountered thru the addiction - but this is temporary)...

I definitely see FPL as an escape, and a more healthy 'addiction' to channel those characteristics of my personality in much better way... there is no temptation to gamble anymore, im fully content in life and FPL provides me with that extra-curricular hobby as it were to engage in!!

I hope the scoutcast tonight and the focus on mental health, and reading posts and comments such as mine and yours discourages people from gambling full stop.

Great post -100% agree with you. 6.5yrs ago I accepted I couldnt 'win' back the money I had lost, and then it was easier to move forward knowing I cant spend more trying to chase. So it was mentally like a blank slate, without the 'chasing' worry. That made it easier to save for my house, and pay off the debts bit by bit. Im now debt free (barring mortgage obviously, and student loan). I still have my addictive personality, but feel Im channelling it correctly, as you say you do too. Good luck on the recovery, and remember take each day at a time, also good luck on the FPL season mate.

I get very down beat when I don't get in the right players or miss big hauls etc that I couldn't deal with losing money as well.

Thanks DM, i can totally relate to what you say. The good thing about FPL is there's always the hope each week that your new transfers (differentials or not) can have one of those great weeks. The difference in gambling is you are always hoping to chase the money back you've lost, by pumping more into it, which financially will ruin you. FPL does help channel my addictive personality too. Good luck for the rest of the season 🙂

Congrats!Always great when to read that someone is clean from gambling.FFS community with the pros and cons is a great fpl place to be.At least for me is working really well.
I also listened to the scoutcast and would like to share some nervous thoughts.
I think the most dangerous thing is what Ben wrote in twitter:
"What’s really dangerous is when you make being a good FPL player part of your identity. It crushes you."
The scoutcast made me rethink the questions i have asked myself, but i continually refuse to answer and apply to my life. The relationship between theory and practice it's really complicated.
I am with my girlfriend, why am i thinking Salah?I try to think of her and enjoy the evening.I have a small success, but then Salah is back again.Am i an fpl addict?I need to study, why am i thinking my transfers(Of course when you study fpl you never think anything else)?I am at my son's birthday and i feel like they stole my car.
Fpl is everywhere in my life.I can't and don't want to stop. The goal i want to achieve and is the most important imo is to reduce the fpl study time. The more i think fpl,the more i don't think other things in my life. The more i study fpl,the less i do other things in my life.I wish i could only watch the games and study 5 hours per week and never think fpl during the week.It would be great. But i am far from that.

Thanks for the positive comments. Yes, FPL is much more popular nowadays. I mean it even has it's own sections on football shows. Footballers play FPL and captain themselves (or not). We almost feel like real managers....

OK, so what I'm about to say might be unpopular but here goes.

Firstly, congrats on beating the addiction. I also have recently recovered from addiction but it was from a game as opposed to gambling. It's been over a year since I last played it but it consumed my life - I no longer did other things in my spare time that I used to enjoy and it cost me a relationship that I had been in for 4 and a half years. I had suffered with depression for several years on and off and believed that my gaming was a good escapism method because it helped to stop me feel depressed whilst I was playing it (or doing other things associated like forums/twitch) - I was full on addicted to it for almost a year.

Quitting was one of the best decisions I've made. Escapism is healthy in small doses but if you are spending the majority of your day trying to escape reality then it's no longer healthy. I'm now longer suffer from depression, anxiety or addiction. I still have the odd day where I feel down but it's no longer a constant state of depression. I filled my time instead with hobbies I used to enjoy - badminton, pool. The former being the most help as exercise is just so damn good at making you feel good. (for me though it has to be sports, I can't stand the gym or running!)

Anyway, from watching the podcast and listening to some people talk about FPL I'm sure there must be a few of you who are addicted to it in an unhealthy way. (particularly the way AZ was talking it seemed like that) - if that's the case, then my advice would be to do what I did and go cold turkey on it and quit. It might seem drastic and unthinkable but it could change your life for the better.

FPL might seem like everything to you right now but it can be replaced by something better in your life if you discover other things you like doing that are less addictive.

      1. wulfrunian

Congrats!Keep up the good work with the sports.I don't think stopping fpl is the solution. As i wrote above the key for me is to minimize the fpl hours.

        1. F_Ivanovic
          • 8 Years
          5 years, 2 months ago

Mine is a drastic solution aimed at those who have a serious addiction. If it's just a mild addiction and it's not affecting other aspects of your life too much then ofc minimizing the hours should be a good enough solution.

I know I couldn't just minimize the hours I spent on the game - however much I loved it and how big a part of my life it was I felt like the only solution was to quit. Originally I did it as part of my NY resolution with the aim to go a month cold turkey but after that month I realised I didn't need to go back.

Good job mate, glad to hear you're doing well.

At least FPL is played only against other people. You don't have, frankly evil, bookies setting the odds and encouraging people to bet. Even in a cash ML, ultimately it's your performance that decides how you do and, all things being equal, you will win your share of the time.

FPL costs me between 5 and 15 quid a year in MLs, and then there's my FFS membership of course! I've only ever made a profit from it, and it's all good. I try not to think of it as gambling, particularly, partly because whatever happens I can't double down and try to make up for lost returns. It is what it is and if I do badly there's always next season! 🙂

Hey Supermane great post mate. My last bet was England v Russia in Euro 2016. I was in denial also and not in control of my gambling. I'd bet on any football match (as well as horse racing) just so that I could have an interest in the game. Though as you will know, a gambling addiction causes anxiety, depression, deceit to name a few things. The only reason I stopped is because my wife found my last ever betting slip. But she had her suspicions about money etc and I was constantly lying to her covering my tracks. I lied at first and said it was a one-off. She knew I was lying and asked to see my online banking. I remember my heart sinking as I knew my statement would look shocking.
I modeled myself on being a great father, the best husband I could be and a real modern day family man.

At that time, it felt like the worst moment of my entire life, seeing my wife break down in tears, adding up all the online betting deposits over the years, being so distant from me because she felt betrayed. I had to rebuild that trust, other relationships along the way. Attended GA classes which was so out of my comfort zone it was untrue.

Though my wife stood by me and I've never looked back. I still wouldn't even change anything as the whole experience made me a better person. Like your good self, I no longer have that heavy burden on my shoulders. I can watch a football match and enjoy it again for all the right reasons.

Though onto FPL. It gives me that focus on a sport I love. Yes it's a horrible feeling when your captain doesn't score, or you have a dreadful gameweek. But I no longer feel guilty if something doesn't go as I'd hoped. I felt for @AZ last night as he's my fav on the panel. I find him very relatable and the sort of lad who you could have a few beers with and talk FPL. It's definitely been a strange season. My big ML looks upside down compared to last season almost. But my advice is stick at it, enjoy the highs and the well deserved big scores, correct decisions etc. Though don't be hard on yourself when things don't go to plan. It's much more than a fantasy game to most of us, but that's exactly what it is.

Prem managers have to deal with penalties not given, bad decisions against them, which could lead them to relegation or the sack. We don't have that pressure.

I wish you all well. Heads up, be the best you can be and enjoy the things that go your way in FPL.

      All the best

        Like your honesty PEPPIG.
I know all too well about addiction, not gambling but addiction is addiction.
The key is not to beat yourself up about it. Anyone with an addiction has a disease and many many have thus disease and don't admit to it and therefore don't do anything about it.. We are the lucky ones who did do something about it. We have worked hard to beat it and in my opinion we are great ppl who through no fault of their own were unfortunate develop an addiction but were strong enough to beat it.
        All the best my friend.

Thanks mate and fair play to you too.
I have always thought I was a very honest person, heart on my sleeve kind of guy. Admitting to lying to loved ones was extremely hard. Though not everyone sees an addiction as a "disease". Many call addictions self absorbed or selfish. And in many respects, they can be.

I guarantee there is always a way out. A phrase I often use to my eldest daughter is we will always make mistakes as we're only human, though "just try to be the best you can be" and she'll go far.

          Keep well my mate

Hit me right in the feels bro. I’ve also got a wife who has been subjected to some stuff I’m not proud of but who has stood be my through the tribulations and we are now stronger than ever with a young family. The mentality of an addictive personality can never be cast aside as there can be very serious consequences.

Nice one pal and best of luck for the future.
I'm also 6 years off the gambling (Sports betting, horse-racing, poker, casino games, you name it) and don't miss it at all now (but that took time). The excitement of living abroad and taking up FPL as a serious hobby in 2016 has certainly helped fill the void! I'm lucky to have a very understanding wife who allows me endless hours of football and me time 🙂

Yes mate good for you. I was always worried I would gamble again and I can honestly say that feeling has well gone. It took time because I'm a creature of habits... and old habits die hard.

Websites I would visit constantly had to be avoided. Triggers would occur, when I would think, usually I would gamble now but I'm not going to. My wife would keep asking me "how are you doing with you gambling?" At first, it was hard to hear and I would just say "Fine. Nothing to worry about"

Though it was still raw. As time went on, I can now openly talk about it much easier. I have a close circle of friends who post their bets on a whatsapp group and it doesn't effect me in the slightest.

Life is now so much more fun I was living two lives without admitting it. A family which is not perfect, but absolutely perfect for me.

I also told my wife that FPL gives me a focus on football without the urges I used to get. It's been brilliant for me too.... and much more enjoyable

I've enjoyed this thread and feel like I've hijacked Supermanes post. Not intentionally but massive respect to the original post 🙂

Well, this game is fun when you smash it. Or improve year on year.

I stopped playing as I figured I’d never get close to that. Everything is a failure after that and it’s a hard pill to swallow.

Doesn’t help that I’ve done abysmally this year.

41k isn't abysmal to most mate. Far from it.
Though if you allow FPL to be the be all and end all then it will more than likely always end badly.

I only focus on my ML's. Currently 6th from 40 and 60 points behind the leader.

I don't worry about my OR once during the season. My only goal is to get in the prize money in the ML (it's my inner gamble) 😀

Though the best thing about it these days is my wife knows what the prize money is and I could treat us 😉

I wish you well mate but you're clearly excellent at FPL. Just take small steps back pal?

                  Thanks PP.

I don’t play for money. Purely for pride.

Also I don’t watch football, and have no interest in it outside of FPL.

I could barely tell you what happened in the PL in the last few seasons, although I did try and educate myself a little before the start of this one.

Yeah, going to take a few more risks and just see how it goes. If all else fails I’m just going to triple captain AWB for the banter.

Haha good luck with that. Finishing 3rd was absolutely incredible. Though the chances of it happening again are slim just because of probabilities. Constant top 10K finishes are commendable especially now there are over 6 million players. Go easy on yourself pal. Love the game and love yourself (Only joking about the love yourself bit... Random o/t comment but that's a funny co-incidence as I'm also 6th in a 52 man league and around 60 points behind the leader! Was 110 points behind and languishing in 17th but Kun TC this week propelled me up the rankings.

Similar story. OR 66 in 2014/2015, 2/3 year hiatus and now like you not even closer to reaching those heights. Just feels all underwhelming.

Think FPL Draft might be the way forward as the desire to beat mates stays fairly strong where as competing against a static ranking in the past is futile

Yeah, feels like the game has changed quite a bit.

I think this season has been a particularly bad one (not that i can compare to 2016/17 or 17/18), in terms of bandwagons doing well, hits paying off, obvious moves succeeding.

Obviously 2015/16 was a strange year as Leicester did so well and I think most FPL players expected them to fail and tail off. Mahrez got me so many points - solid but not ridiculous returns. Might be wrong but I think his GW1 score (15) maybe have been his highest (I had him from the start as my 4th mid).

Chips were new too which I think caught people out: I used AOA and lost 5 points. If I had used BB and TC the other way around I’d have gained 20 points or so. That would have been enough to have won overall.

Surely if FPL is affecting your mental health (as it seems Az is now saying) it’s time to stop playing and find something else to do. It’s only a game, and only worth doing if you are enjoying it.

If you *can’t* stop despite it affecting you negatively then you’ve got a problem and maybe need to seek help...

I really like that they talked about it and found their insights and thoughts hugely beneficial after a tough week. (Haz > Sane (c))

This is my first year playing fpl after I missed the Friday gw1 deadline last year. I did a lot of research/followed all the scoutcasts last year to prepare for this year, but still feel like every non template decision I make costs me in every way (Sane subbed on 59 mins) for example.

I have lost sleep, got stressed, overthought and even rethought my life/value because of my teams performance. I know it is just a game, but it is something I care about and want to do well in. For me that means it means as much as anything else in my life (more in some regards than my work as that is something I do in order to have disposable income to do the things I enjoy).

In a way though it helped to hear that Az, and the others had suffered similar issues. One of the scariest things about getting into the mindset described above is that you begin to feel you are the only one effected in that way, and that their is something wrong with you for feeling that way, which ultimately makes you feel worse.

Well done to the scout cast team for discussing such a difficult subject and handling so well.

FPL, and especially this gameweek, can put me in foul mood for a bit but is that a legitimate mental health problem?

My personal reaction is to do a lot of "What if I had of" agonizing, give up on that, make some rage transfers and then look forward to next GW.

If you are feeling depressed or seriously low about FPL for longer than a few hours some evening, step away from the game for a bit. It's really not worth it. Only come back when you find a way to make it fun again with a shiny new player or a renewed strategy.

The luck factor is huge and you cannot control it. Don't let it control you.

It impacts people because they think they are entitled to do well since they've put some time into it, even if the time they put in is essentially asking the same question 10 times a day, 7 times a week. Don't think most can handle not being able to control outcomes. The messed up mental state of so many on here was so obvious when they were attacking Fantasy Gold because Pep benched Sane.
