Manchester United’s unbeaten record under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer came to an end on Tuesday night as they were beaten by Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League last-16 tie.

Progress to the quarter-finals now seems a tall order, particularly given that Paul Pogba was dismissed towards the end of last night’s defeat and will now be suspended for the second leg in three weeks’ time.

United also lost Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial to injuries, the severity of which are still to be determined.

We’ll discuss the potential implications of this loss to Fantasy managers in our Scout Notes below.

Manchester United 0-2 Paris Saint-Germain

Jesse Lingard (£6.7m) and Anthony Martial (£7.2m) picked up muscle strains in the first half of Manchester United’s 2-0 defeat to Thomas Tuchel’s PSG side on Tuesday evening.

The injuries led to both players’ substitutions before the second half had kicked off, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer having this to say about his midfield pair:

Oh, don’t know [how serious they are]. Muscular injuries: hamstring, groin. So we’ll have to have a couple of days to assess them.

The belief that United are a significantly inferior team without Lingard and Martial was further evidenced in a flat second-half showing by Solskjaer’s side, with Juan Mata (£6.1m) and especially Alexis Sanchez (£10.0m) once again failing to exert the same influence that their crocked team-mates have imposed since the Norwegian took charge in December.

Of course, United won’t face a team the calibre of PSG every week and they demonstrated on Saturday that they are more than capable of carving out league victories even without one or more of their first-choice front three on the pitch.

However, the Red Devils next face Liverpool in the league and have matches against Arsenal and – subject to rearrangement – Manchester City looming on the horizon in Gameweeks 30 and 31.

While Martial and Lingard aren’t too widely owned in Fantasy Premier League (6.1% and 4.4% respectively at the time of writing), the effect of their possible absences on the significantly more popular Paul Pogba (£8.8m) and Marcus Rashford (£7.8m) is certainly worthy of consideration.

Before Saturday’s no-show at Craven Cottage, Rashford’s only two blanks under Solskjaer came when Martial wasn’t on the pitch.

In one of those matches, the Gameweek 24 draw with Burnley, Rashford was used on the left flank in Martial’s absence and was noticeably less effective in an attacking sense.

With Alexis in such poor form, the possibility of Rashford being deployed on the left wing in the event of a Martial absence (and this has yet to be confirmed, it must be stressed) is reared again.

Solskjaer added to the discussion on Lingard and Martial:

They’re big parts of our squad and they have played really well. When they went out, in the second half, we didn’t have so much movement and pace to get in behind them.

Then Juan [Mata], I thought he was one who got on the ball for us and created a few bits. So, we need to maybe find a different way to play when Anthony and Jesse are out.

Speaking of Sanchez’s form, the Norwegian added:

I can’t do anything about Alexis Sanchez.

When he plays he needs to find himself because we know there’s a quality player there.

Rashford was largely anonymous at Old Trafford last night, save for one early ambitious effort from an acute angle that forced Gianluigi Buffon into his only save of the match.

The French champions also doubled up on Pogba to limit the former Juventus star’s influence, though the in-form midfielder still drew praise from his manager despite a late dismissal for two bookable offences:

He tries to get his body across and Dani Alves is clever enough to put his foot in there, so he hits him. From the side, I knew that all Paul wanted to do was shield the ball, but he’s unlucky and hits him on the knee.

Disappointed, of course, that we’re not going to have Paul next round because I thought he was our best player. He had three players around him all the time and he was still out on top.

So that’s a big blow because he’s been fantastic for us.

That European suspension is, of course, positive news for Fantasy managers as it would seem to nullify any threat of rotation for Pogba in Gameweeks 29 and/or 30 (those matches against Southampton and Arsenal sandwiching the return leg against PSG).

The possibility remains of Rashford being rested for one of those matches, perhaps the more “winnable” home fixture against Southampton, though any prolonged absence for Lingard and Martial would limit Solskjaer’s alternative options in attack.

The effect of losing the pace and energy of those two injured midfielders also appeared to have a negative effect on United’s backline last night, with the hosts unable to exact the same aggressive press using Mata and Sanchez and subsequently allowing PSG to push further up the pitch.

While United had a couple of close calls with offside decisions before the break, the bulk of PSG’s opportunities came after half-time and United ultimately had to rely on David de Gea (£5.7m) to keep the scoreline down.

Les Parisiens’ undid their hosts with two goals in seven second-half minutes: Presnel Kimpembe volleying in an Angel di Maria corner before Kylian Mbappe finished off a slick break to double his side’s advantage.

De Gea later foiled an attempted Mbappe chip and had to fist away a rising Juan Bernat effort, while Dani Alves had a goalbound shot deflected narrowly wide.

Solskjaer said of his side’s defensive efforts:

We’ve got to look at this game and see where it went wrong. Of course, when you concede a goal from a set-piece, you concede a goal on the counter-attack, you should not concede those goals.

In the first half, there wasn’t really much in it, and then they got the first goal. When they got that one, it was a poor goal to give away. Then they got the momentum. They started to control the game. They had the experience to play it out.

Manchester United (4-3-3):  De Gea; Young, Bailly, Lindelof, Shaw; Herrera, Matic, Pogba; Lingard (Sanchez 45′), Martial (Mata 46′), Rashford (Lukaku 84′).

Brainstorming for GW 28. With 2 FT, would you rather have:

    Aguero + $6.6m MF

    OR

    Sterling + $6.8 FW

Not too many MF that I prefer at that price point and I already have Fraser, Son, Pogba, and Salah.

Might be a good time to bring in King vs ARS, bench GW29, and then a solid run for GW30+. Wilson returning from injury is a concern. Other front two are Jim and Rashford.

How much is Gross? If he's under 6.6 that could work

      Or Sterling and Barnes

Roll the dice and pick James Maddison at 6.6 - I am bringing him in. Think he can do wonders in the next couple of months with the Foxes incredible run and the fact Albrighton is out for the seasons means he can't really be dropped

    A carry
    B make transfer to Anderson
    C make transfer to Maddison

    Boruc
    Doherty AWB Van Dijk Kolasinac
    Son Salah Pogba
    Aubameyang (c) Rashford Jiménez

Hypothetical for those planning FH in 32.

If one of the double fixtures is City United - as seems probable - how much value is there in the FH in that week? Liverpool also have Spurs that week which means that pretty much all the top 4 will have a tricky fixture.

I’m wondering whether it makes more sense to FH in the second double week where there might be more hitters available with 2 good fixtures.

For me I’m likely to have a surfeit if Palace and Bournemouth players in 32. They could have two nice fixtures and BB feels it might be preferable.

BB would need WC for my team in particular.
So BB in gw35 is the only way to go for me i think.

My plan A is the same as the one you mentioned above.

But I’m also slightly tempted by an early WC in 29/30 or so and forego the late WC in 34. I doubt my bench would be stronger in 35 than 32.

There’s nothing too wrong with my squad other than it’s OR! The temptation is swap out Mo for Sterling in a bid for differential points. In the next run of fixtures the biggest worry would be 31 (Fulham Liverpool) but that could be balanced by 32 with Aguero Sterling doubles. For me it’d need to be a WC to do it in order to get a viable 31 team out too.

The downside would be to lose the 34 WC but I suspect I’d only be pulling in the players then that I’d want in 29/30.

Anyone got a clear idea on their strategy? I'm thinking free hit 31 TC 32 WC 33/34 BB 35 - However saying this I really like gw 33 free hit. One way to do this would be plan for 31 then play wc in 32, free hit 33 bench boost 35 and hope there's a late double for TC

This definitely. Puts you ahead of the curve in the later weeks, especially DGW 35 when you will have wild-carded only 2 weeks prior. I am looking at Periera in for Digne now given Leicesters fixtures and the fact they play GW31&33. Following this strategy almost makes in imperative to have 3 Liverpool players from GW31 onwards...

    2. Moderately content penguin
      • 7 Years

If it’s City United and Liverpool Spurs in 32 I’m not sure I want to be doing anything much that week other than BB. (Lucky with the Aguero TC already).

I don’t really want to be pulling in their players either on WC or FH. There’s always the City Fulham match but it feels exactly the sort of fixture where you could be burnt by multiple City assets.

If I BB 32 then that leaves me the option of FH in the second double and playing WC in either 33 or 34 depending on fixtures and squad.

He got a 150 point lead over me. That's why I feel I need to act now.

It's a tough one mate because you have triple Man Utd and Liverpool.
150 points is a big gap which such similar teams.
You could look at players like Arnie or Rondon up front which would possibly mean sacrificing Rashford. (probably Rondon as you already have 2 WHU)

Though if you can't see him bringing Auba in, then your suggestion could be worth a shot. I held Maddison for a long time and like him as a footballer but found his points scoring frustrating. You could take a punt on Almiron who could play an attacking role behind Rondon

I got double United. Arnie feels to injury prone and Rondon feels meh. I will get 1 goal now and then but I feel like that isn't enough. You think I should go for Auba before Aguero? I won't have any City cover then.

Sorry... so you have. I wouldn't be bring Aguero in for a blank GW. If it's any consolation, Arnie is my captain going into the Fulham game

Is it impossible to delete head-to-head leagues or am I being a bit special? I see this:

Auba is going to be the obvious choice. However, as an Auba owner, I am hesitant to captain him. SOU has only conceded three goals in their last four away matches vs: BUR (1), LEI (1), CHE (0), and HUD (1).

Son could be good. BUR have conceded seven goals in their last four home matches. I like Rondon's fixture, but his stats are not appealing. BOU are pretty solid at home. Only three goals conceded in their last four home matches.

If you don't captain Aubameyang in a week where Aguero + Hazard don't play and where Salah is away to United, I don't think there's much point in splashing 11m+ on him.

I don't think there's any close call between Gomez and Jones. Maguire is closer to Gomez than Jones, and even Maguire is being exposed as a limited defender this season. I'll leave that to the neutrals.. 🙂

Think the call is closer between Jones and Stones than between Stones and Gomez. Stones is not very good. He just seldom gets exposed because of Fernandinho and City midfield's level of ball retention.

Yeah to be fair Lingard and Rashford come in quite easily, they seem to play really well for England.

Shaw is sh1te. Chilwell is in a different league to him already.

Hard one. Aguero edges it for me because of the lack of alternatives up front. Double up might be best but its so frustrating when Sterling gets benched and I think the upcoming period is prime for that with CL. Mahrez might get more league games.
