Tottenham Hotspur completed a 4-0 aggregate win over Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday evening to progress to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.

Spurs withstood heavy pressure at Westfalenstadion but came away from Germany with a 1-0 win, thanks to an early second-half goal from Harry Kane.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side’s victory means that their schedule after the international break now looks as follows:

Sunday 31 March: Gameweek 32 – Liverpool (a)
Wednesday 3 April: Possible Double Gameweek 32 fixture*
Sunday 7 April: Gameweek 33 – Brighton and Hove Albion (h)*
Tue/Wed 9/10 April: UEFA Champions League quarter-final, first leg
Saturday 13 April: Gameweek 34 – Huddersfield Town (h)
Tue/Wed 16/17 April: UEFA Champions League quarter-final, second leg
Saturday 20 April: Gameweek 35 – Manchester City (a)
Tue/Wed 23/24 April: Possible Double Gameweek 35 fixture*
Saturday 27 April: Gameweek 36 – West Ham United (h)

*This is dependant on Brighton’s progression in the FA Cup and the re-scheduling of the outstanding Premier League fixtures. Should the Seagulls make it through to the semi-finals of the FA Cup, then Spurs would have a Blank Gameweek 33. Spurs v Crystal Palace and Spurs v Brighton would then be the two postponed matches that could take place in Double Gameweeks 32 and 35, though Albion will very likely need a third Double Gameweek if they beat Millwall in the FA Cup quarter-finals – so their trip to Wembley could potentially be delayed further.

Given that it is sandwiched by the two legs of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, Spurs’ home match against Huddersfield Town looks to be the fixture perhaps most at risk of rotation, should Pochettino feel the need to do so.

That would partly depend on Spurs’ situation in the Premier League, of course. Should the Lilywhites (who are surely out of the title race now) look well-placed for a Champions League qualification spot ahead of the chasing pack behind them, then Pochettino may decide to ring the changes (or, at least, manage key players’ game-time) for the visit of the Championship-bound Terriers in Gameweek 34.

Our Scout Notes article below focuses on the key events in Dortmund last night.

Borussia Dortmund 0-1 Tottenham Hotspur

  • Goal: Harry Kane (£12.4m)
  • Assist: Moussa Sissoko (£4.9m)

There are UEFA Champions League matches that can aid Fantasy managers with their pre-Gameweek preparations and then there are those ties that are to be viewed only in isolation.

Spurs’ 1-0 win over Borussia Dortmund last night largely fell into the latter category.

Save for an injury to Harry Winks (£5.5m), another goal for Harry Kane (£12.4m) and the 71st-minute substitution of Son Heung-min (£8.8m) that will potentially aid the Korean’s recovery ahead of the trip to Southampton, we probably didn’t learn a great deal from Tuesday night’s clash at Signal Iduna Park.

The match was attack versus defence for long periods, with Dortmund forced to come out on the front foot as they attempted to claw back a 3-0 deficit from the first leg at Wembley.

Pochettino’s set-up, a 5-3-2 that became a 5-4-1 after half an hour, was tailored to the occasion, too, as Spurs ceded possession and chances to their hosts and mounted only the occasional counter-attack.

We are likely to see a completely different match when Spurs visit St. Mary’s Stadium on Saturday but there were at least encouraging individual and collective displays from Pochettino’s troops in Dortmund after some indifferent performances over the last three Gameweeks.

Jan Vertonghen (£5.9m) was perhaps the pick of Spurs’ excellent back three alongside Davinson Sanchez (£5.8m) and Toby Alderweireld (£6.0m), while even Serge Aurier (£5.8m) and Ben Davies (£5.6m) turned in solid displays at full-back.

Hugo Lloris (£5.5m) was also dependable between the posts, making smart stops from Julian Weigl and Raphael Guerreiro as well as a cluster of other more routine saves as Dortmund ramped up the pressure.

The one-way traffic prompted a swift tactical reshuffle from Pochettino, with Son and Christian Eriksen (£9.3m) moved from their more central roles into wider positions in a bid to curb Dortmund’s play down the flanks.

The Spurs manager said of his changes:

After 15 minutes we changed the position of Son and Christian Eriksen and yes, we tried to provide the players on the pitch with more solutions and try to help. I think that worked well, we didn’t concede, of course, we conceded some chances, but the team always felt confident on the pitch.

Eriksen was, as he has been for some time, below his usual top levels in possession but worked hard for the cause, while Son put in a decent shift as he attempted to give Kane some support in attack. The South Korea international had one excellent opportunity in the first half but could only stab wide, before being sacrificed for Erik Lamela (£5.9m) in the final 20 minutes.

Goal-scoring opportunities were few and far between for Spurs, with Kane’s superbly taken 49th-minute strike the only shot that the visitors had on target.

It’s now three goals in four matches for Kane since his return from injury, with last night’s winner meaning the England forward is now Spurs’ all-time leading scorer in Europe.

Pochettino said:

I am so happy, you know very well my emotion with him. He is one of the best strikers in the world. The mentality and determination is fantastic. I want to congratulate him and I want to congratulate Hugo because it was his 100th clean sheet for Tottenham, that is a massive achievement too.

The Spurs manager shared his thoughts on the match as a whole, saying:

After the first leg, 3-0, you could see the risk Dortmund took during the game. Of course, when you have in your hands the possibility to be in the quarter-final, everyone believed that the job was done and it’s so dangerous. You need to take more responsibility and care about that. Dortmund had nothing to lose and played with freedom

After half an hour it was tough and then we started to play a little bit. We started the second half better and, of course, when we scored in the second half, the players feel that the game was over and we were going to be in the quarter-finals. Maybe we play deeper or gave Dortmund more possession but if you analyse the two legs, I think we fully deserve it.

The severity of Winks’ injury is yet to be determined but the player himself said:

We don’t know yet. I’ve had a bit of a problem the last four or five days. A problem with my hip and groin.

We’ll asses it today and see how bad it is, but nothing too serious.

Winks had missed the north London derby with that problem, while another player to be unavailable for that 1-1 draw with Arsenal, Eric Dier (£4.7m), returned as a second-half substitute last night after a bout of tonsillitis.

Dele Alli (£8.8m) wasn’t part of the Spurs squad in Germany but Pochettino had earlier expressed hope that the former MK Dons midfielder may be able to feature against Southampton in Gameweek 30, having returned to training.

Pochettino said:

Dele is close, we will see if it is possible to for Saturday to be involved with the team against Southampton.

Kieran Trippier (£6.1m) wasn’t part of the travelling party to Dortmund, meanwhile, with Pochettino saying the right-back was “so tired”.

Tottenham Hotspur XI (5-3-2): Lloris; Aurier, Alderweireld, Sanchez, Vertonghen, Davies; Winks (Dier 55′), Eriksen (Rose 83′), Sissoko; Son (Lamela 71′), Kane.

Lads and lasses, I’m with a mate who flat out will not believe me that the free hit chip works like a wildcard in that you can play it at the start of the week and tinker as much as you like until the deadline - could some of you please back me up that this is correct? Would be much appreciated! 🙂

If any of your non FH squad increase/decrease in value during the FH week, I assume that gain or loss is reflected, but I suppose a disadvantage of FH is that you cannot trade these players in or out during FH activation? So for that reason is it perhaps tactically better to activate FH only 1-2 days before the GW deadline?

      1. HamezMace
        • 11 Years
        7 years, 4 months ago

You can make changes to your FH team all the way through the week, so no, that's not the case.

If you activate it early, and get someone double rises, then you can sell them and reinvest the 0.1m profit.

Seems an unlikely scenario, but apparently it's correct.

oh you mean your regular team, well nothing you can do about those changes anyway if you're playing FH.

Not to your main team, but you can with your one week FH team, but the value doesn't carry forward.

Thanks Hamezmace - I found yesterday's article, it's covering a different scenario to what I'm thinking. I'm not asking about a 0.2 price profit as such, it's more about price changes of your normal team during the time your FH is active - as there's nothing you can do in terms of buy/sell on those players until the next GW starts, or unless you limit the amount of time FH is active.

So for example if I want to FH for GW31, but have a DGW32 player in mind (who isn't on the FH list, and is not playing in 31) - I may be in a situation where I could get priced out if that player rises in value whilst I have my FH activated, whereas I could transfer that player in before he rises in price earlier in the week of GW 31, and activate FH..... or does FH apply to any transfer(s) you've made that GW prior to activating it?

              1. HamezMace
                • 11 Years
                7 years, 4 months ago

FH applies to any transfers you've already made, regardless of what time after the previous weeks deadline you make those.

So you have your regular team in GW29, as an example, once the deadline has passed and GW30 becomes active (Saturday lunchtime) and you make some transfers on the Sunday evening...then decide to activate your FH on Tuesday for example, the transfers you made Sunday evening will be void, as your team will reset to it's GW29 form once the deadline into GW31 begins.

Hi Hamezmace, sorry didn't realise you responded today - thanks for this confirmation. Thankfully my transfer strategy doesn't rely on this being possible, but it might have created some interesting opportunities if it had.

    Help? GW 31 and 33:

    Fab
    TAA Digne X
    Salah FA Hazard Fraser X
    King X

    A) Higuain, Maddison, VVD
    B) Vardy, Mane, Ake

Such a tough decision imo. Will be getting Madisson, King and VVD in this gw for A... Or Vardy, Mane, Ake this gw for B if that makes any sense fml.

Looking to build towards Blank GW31 and 33.

Current players who will blank in GW31 are: Pogba, Rash, Son, AWB, Jiminez and Doherty. What 3 should I replace over the next 2 GWs? 2FT, 0.3 ITB.

    Fabianski – Button
    Robertson – TAA – Perreira – Doherty – AWB
    Salah – Son – Hazard – Pogba – F. Anderson
    Jimenez – Rashford - Crouch

Maddison since GW 20 has 36 Chances Created...The next closest in the entire EPL has 25...

Seems like he has been a bit unlucky with only having 2 assists in that time. He also has 26 shots and no goals. I am thinking his luck changes with these juicy upcoming fixtures. Vardy also is a good option, as he should be the beneficiary of those Maddison created chances.

          From SS;

However, Mourinho, who left the Bernabeu in 2013 after three years at the club, was keen to avoid any disrespect towards Santiago Solari, Real's current head coach, and dismissed claims negotiations have begun.

Asked about the fans shouting his name, Mourinho told Spanish TV station El Chiringuito: "I am proud of that, but Real Madrid have a manager. Obviously it's a reason to be proud but nothing more than that.

"There has been nothing [between me and the club] - not even the minimum contact. I haven't done that [spoken to the players or the president] . Like you say, there are rumours. But rumours in football are bad."

Depends on value tied up, and whether you want them back in DGW32, and later in the season?
      Also chip/WC strategy.

Well obviously it'll be better to have Wilson and TAA in GW31, than two players who don't play.

..and if you don't want them anymore anyway, then yes, makes sense.

Team for this week, probably. Did my -4 transfers on Monday before the rises.
    Deeney+Son->Higuain+Brooks (-4)

    Fabianski
    Robertson Shaw WanBissaka
    Salah(c) Hazard Pogba Brooks
    Aguero Higuain Solanke(i)

    Etheridge | Doherty McNeil Bennett(sus.)

Any lineup changes? One more hit required? Hopefully Solanke plays a part in the blank on 31, or even this GW.

Here´s a listing on some FPL cases i think is strange that people complains/using much time on mulling over

    1. Value loss when selling a player who does not play in one GW just because you are afraid of losing value. What´s the fuss? You just have to make better job in finding value when you FH or WC later? You get additional points that you otherwise won´t if you "protect value"
    2. People making assumptions on when a player is rested (Kun for example) or a team makes a lot of changes because a CHL match and making decisions based on the assumption they have made themselves. This makes your job much harder if you add to the already difficult task of choices if you base your choices on your own assumptions
    3. Complaints about managers (the real PL managers) being vague or little concrete in their pressers. I thought when i began to play this game that to be able to interprete what the managers says is part of our task as fantasy managers? So, when a players is spoken of by a manager as a doubt you have to listen to how the managers describes it? And then take the injury plus the circumstances and then very often the picture unfolds?

      1. I have pointed out to many people that it makes sense to carry a player through a blank if you are able to, and if you want that player back in GW32, and beyond (WC34 for example).
Players like Jimenez and Pogba generally have more value tied up in them for most of us, and if you want them in 32, even if you're free hitting, that's an extra 1.2m or so you need to find.

That can make a big difference, especially as you'll want a decent bench if you still have BB chip.

Of course it makes sense to carry a player with value tied up but to me if you have a choice between selling Pogba with a 0.5 or something in valueloss for say Mané that will give you points that is predictable gain i would do it with no hesitation. And yes then you have to pay more for Pogba IF you want him back, but that just makes it 0.5 less to use on your whole squad which in the 32 or 34 doesn´t guarantee you to get more points just because you got 0-5 more to spend?. That IF is also of importance to me because you don´t know by now if you want him in 32. Maybe you want Lukaku, Rashford and Lindelof?

Might be more pressing with the WC when BB as FH for most will mean reducing the existent bench with some hundred thousands or even mill saved for some.

    2. MTPockets
      7 years, 4 months ago

      1. What if I want them back soon?
      2. How do you make any decisions without assumptions?
      3. I'm surprised Managers give any team/injury info. I wouldn't

Landscapes changes and that 0.4 loss or whatever is not hard to accomodate if you pick your players on FH or WC clever. I don´t advocate to sell ALL your players tied up in value but if for example Rashford to Vardy means you lose .4 in value but gets a player in 2 additional matches then there´s more points in that move. That may force you to pay less for a goalie or a defender or a little less somewhere in the squad but in that scenario there is no guarantee that spending less gives you less points. Keeping Rash instead of playing Vardy is going to be a points difference.
        2. What i meant is that people worry too much and then often that worry leads to decisions and that´s is what i meant by assumptions. Of course we make assumptions but in most cases it´s far more easy than people ought to think it is.
        3. Agree on that one, if i were a manager i wouldn´t give away that info-)

        1. MTPockets
          7 years, 4 months ago

I wouldn't hold back on extra DGWer for sake of losing £, but if e.g. it means I could no longer afford Aguero for a double then would think carefully about my choices.

Guess it comes down to pencilling in a future team and seeing what works/doesn't. As you say the landscape will change and so will prices

They only have 1 decent fixture in both sets of DGWs right? I just think now is the time to put the value to use. I have FH and WC for both doubles and I don’t think ill pick any wolves. But will see closer to the time

35 is Arsenal at home. Arsenal haven't kept a CS away since Huddersfield last season, and Wolves seem to perform against better sides. Doesn't necessarily justify holding any until then though.

Jimenez is the one i keep myself, but if you want a defender for 31 or 33 and he stands in the way for it i would consider it. You might regret it ofc but if you want a Wolves def later on then there´s cheaper option available. For example, Burnley and United concedes a lot from set pieces so Boly could be shrewd pick if you still decide to go for one. People told themselves alonso was the better pick than Luiz for ages, that´s just an example that reminds us that times and tides changes. we don´t know which Wolves defender gets most points from here til the end, do we?

Really confused on my transfer plans till gw31 unless i take out one of Sterling or Aguero this gw which could backfire..have 2ft and 0.6m

    Fabianski -- Button
Lascelles Digne Pereira -- Doherty Schindler
Salah Pogba Sterling Rich -- Hayden
    Jimenez King Aguero

    - Overall plan was to do Schindler / Hayden / Sterling / Kun >> TAA / Fraser / Hazard / Higuain (-4) by gw31. So if i do Sterling + Kun >> Hazard + Higuain in gw31, that would i can't afford upgrading Schindler/Hayden. SO, alternate plan could be do to

A: Hayden >> Brooks and roll FT. will do the other transfers as planned but means i end up with Brooks as opposed to Fraser
B: Digne >> TAA and roll FT. will do the other transfers as planned but means i retain Schindler for gw31/33 as opposed to Digne

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.
