Suspensions

Those who keep an eye on our Suspension Tightrope widget on our homepage will be aware that a handful of Fantasy assets are perilously close to a ban.

If Premier League players accrue ten yellow cards in the top flight by the time their team has contested 32 league matches, they will then be slapped with a two-match suspension.

The ban has to be served in the same competition, too, so any suspension will only affect Premier League matches.

The key in the second paragraph above is “32 league matches”, which in most cases will be Gameweek 32.

However, there are some exceptions.

Brighton and Hove Albion have only played 29 Premier League games so far this season and won’t play their 32nd league fixture until Gameweek 34 – but none of the Seagulls’ players have accrued more than five cautions in 2018/19 and so are safe from any possible suspension incurred by collecting ten yellow cards.

Arsenal will play their 32nd Premier League game in Gameweek 33 (see below), as will Southampton – although the Saints’ players, like Brighton’s, can rest easy regarding the threat of a two-match ban.

Nearing a Suspension

Sokratis Papastathopoulos£5.1mArsenal930
Phil Bardsley£4.2mBurnley931
Luke Shaw£5.1mManchester United930

Granit Xhaka£5.2mArsenal830
Harry Arter£4.9mCardiff City830
Luka Milivojevic£6.3mCrystal Palace830
Diogo Jota£6.1mWolverhampton Wanderers

Phil Bardsley (£4.2m) just has to negotiate Burnley’s sole Gameweek 32 fixture against Bournemouth to avoid a two-match ban, while Sokratis (£5.1m) has to dodge a yellow card against Newcastle and Everton in Gameweeks 32 and 33 to do the same.

Luke Shaw (£5.1m) and Etienne Capoue (£4.8m) both have a Double Gameweek 32 with Manchester United and Watford, so there exists the possibility of these players being booked in their opening Gameweek 32 fixture at Old Trafford and then being suspended for their respective clubs’ second game in midweek.

Even if Shaw and Capoue avoid picking up bookings in Manchester next Saturday, they would have to do likewise on the following Tuesday before the threat of a two-game ban is permanently lifted.

Diogo Jota (£6.1m), Luka Milivojevic (£6.3m) and Harry Arter (£4.9m) would have to be booked in both of their Double Gameweek 32 fixtures in order to be handed a two-match suspension, while Granit Xhaka (£5.2m) only needs to avoid a caution in one of Gameweek 32 or 33 to avoid that fate.

Ben Mee (£4.6m), Matt Ritchie (£5.8m) and Robert Snodgrass (£5.0m) are all sitting on eight yellow cards, too, but their respective clubs have already played 31 Premier League matches so they are no longer at risk.

Snodgrass is, at the time of writing, contesting an FA charge for allegedly abusing an anti-doping official.

Currently Banned

There are currently four FPL assets serving a ban in the Premier League, two of which were as the result of collecting ten yellow cards.

Ryan Bennett (£4.1m) will miss the first of Wolves’ Double Gameweek 32 fixtures before returning for the second match against Manchester United, while Fabian Schar (£4.7m) will be back for Newcastle in Blank Gameweek 33.

Harry Maguire (£5.4m) will also return in Gameweek 33 for Leicester as he serves a one-match ban for a professional foul, while Lucas Torreira (£4.7m) won’t be available until Gameweek 34 for Arsenal after his dismissal for violent conduct in the north London derby.

The Next Threshold: 15 Bookings

Once the threshold of 32 league matches is lifted, the next “target” for Premier League players to avoid is 15 yellow cards.

An FPL asset who collects 15 cautions will be handed a three-match ban.

There are a handful of players who are already into double figures for the season:

On my free hit but want an extra double gameweek player for my bench just in case of some unforeseen disaster with someone. With that in mind, who would you bench out of Batshuayi and Deulofeu?

That may be overly cautious but if you have the spare money nothing wrong with it.
I'd bench Deulofeu because of CPL playing HUD.

I’m thinking Shaw might be worth the risk with 9 yellows. Even if he does get a yellow in the Watford game It’s the likelier Man U fixture for a CS

Any interest in Alonso? Seems to be first choice again and could be a massive differential with those two easy fixtures. Would expect him to be pushing forward... Reasonable price now too

Alonso and Emerson clearly rotate, like Willian vs Pedro and Barkley vs Kovacic. There's no clear first choice anymore

I was heavily on the "Sterling scores more against smaller teams, while Kun scores the big 6 more" side of the fence until I checked the FPL website:

Sterling's overall points per match: 7.3
Aguero's overall points per match: 6.3

Returns against teams outside top 6:
Aguero: 10 goals, 9 assists. 17 starts. 4 blanks. Subbed on 2x (1 was on return from injury). Did not play 3, all due to injury
Sterling: 12 goals, 8 assists. 16 starts. 5 blanks. Subbed on 3x. Did not play 3. No injuries I remember

Where Sterling clearly beats Kun is explosiveness against non-top 6, which is an important detail for those chasing or using TC:
    Sterling's >=10 point hauls against non-top 6: 21, 21, 16, 14, 10, 10
    Aguero's >=10 point hauls against non-top 6: 20, 13

"I was heavily on the "Sterling scores more against smaller teams, while Kun scores the big 6 more" side of the fence until I checked the FPL website"

And now which side of the fence are you on?

      1. Ze_Austin

        7 years, 2 months ago

Now shifted to the Kun side based on his absence from the Argentina team and the fact that he only missed the starting lineup once when fully fit, while Sterling plays for England and has missed six starting lineups with no reported injury, a few of which (not sure how many exactly) were around international breaks

Sterling's explosiveness still tempts me to no end, as I had the (C) on him (with no Aguero) for that Watford game

I'd say I'm a lot more "on the fence" now than I was before the research, but currently swaying towards Aguero

Found myself more in the middle now, due to the closeness of their numbers of returns. It's now down to whether I want to play it safe with Kun's higher certainty of starting both, or take the risk with Sterling's higher ceiling and higher chance of being benched

Before, I had the wrong notion that Kun blanked a lot against small teams, so it made Sterling undoubtedly my captain

    5. Camzy

This makes it seem like Sterling is the better choice. Higher explosiveness is good for a captain pick.

The only problem, is that I don't think Sterling starts both matches. I think he likely starts this weekend then comes off the bench midweek or vice versa.

Yeah I prefer A also at the moment. Worth doing Ederson/Azpil -> Kepa/Laporte?

Saves 0.6m which could be used to upgrade Lindelöf -> Smalling/Young

A completely different question. If there is a penalty shootout and 1 team has had a player sent off. And it is still equal after 10 players have taken their penalties, does that team with a red card go without a penalty on the 11th?

    1. Holmes
      • 12 Years
      7 years, 2 months ago

Quora says: When a penalty shootout is to decide the outcome of a football match, both teams must take the same amount of kicks, using the same amount of players. So, if one team has one player sent off, the opposing team must exclude one of their players from their penalty kick selection.

Seeing a specialist for his foot injury. It's a real injury diagnosed by the Belgian medical staff, not an "international injury"

Rashford also has an injury most of us watched him get against Liverpool, and he'd been playing under par due to it since then. Probably aggravated it, but it was serious enough for weeks for him to get treated

When will either or both be fit? Can't really say. We haven't gotten official word yet. My guess is both would be ready by GW32. But until we get official confirmation on their "returns to full training", plan a squad without 'em. I've seen many teams on here that depend on which of them is fit, but no backup plan if both are out

Who would you rather get on a free hit?
    A) Deulofeu
    B) Azpilicueta

cant really compare because they are different positions, but B is more secure, A is more explosive but chance of reduced minutes

I'll either play 4-3-3 or 4-4-2. It depends who I get from the two

Cheers. He's my punt I guess but easy do him to even someone like Knockeart and upgrade Awb

Not a bad punt actually, would be worried about him starting both though. I’m looking at maybe getting groB. Duelofeu is another option.

Sterling has been benched 4 times this season.

These are the fixtures: HUD BUR wat EVE eve WHU

I think it's very likely that Sterling plays against ful and then benched vs CAR.

So is that an indication to C Kun?

Cause I don't think anyone will take the risk to go Stelringless

Not entirely. Sterling in just one game can score 20 points. Aguero isn't gonna get a haul that big most of the time. One game might be enough.

Yh, every chance this happens but worth just for 1 game

I think it's more likely Sterling starts both games. He should be 120 mins across both games

I think that he’ll play both and then be rested in the fa cup for champions league

My Free Hit top targets in each position... anyone I’m missing? Don’t think Kane is worth the money.

    GK: Kepa/Ederson/Foster/Ryan/Guaita

    DEF: Laporte/Luiz/Lindelof/Smalling/Tomkins

    MID: Pogba/Hazard/Sterling/Deulofeu/Son

    ATTACK: Aguero/Rashford/Lukaku/Zaha/Deeney

Yeah, but Pedro will likely only get one game. I think Azpilicueta is a good shout

True. Unsure on Dilva as I think I want a City defender. Dunk/AWB are nicely priced cheap 3rd it 4th defenders
