Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) made a much earlier-than-anticipated exit from the Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday evening after Egypt were defeated 1-0 by South Africa.

The shock result means that Salah and his country have bowed out of the tournament over two weeks before it is due to finish.

Bafana Bafana’s victory could have repercussions in Fantasy Premier League, with Salah’s summer international obligations coming to an end before those of teammates Sadio Mane (£11.5m) and Roberto Firmino (£9.5m).

With the Africa Cup of Nations final taking place exactly three weeks before Gameweek 1 kicks off, we had previously expressed concern that Salah and/or Mane could be doubts for the 2019/20 curtain-raiser between Liverpool and Norwich City in August.

Last year, Dejan Lovren (£5.5m) and Jordan Henderson (£5.5m) were handed three weeks off after their exertions with Croatia and England at the World Cup.

Klopp is, indeed, expected to give Firmino and Alisson (£6.0m) the same amount of time to recover after their run to the final in the Copa America.

Salah’s premature departure from the Africa Cup of Nations, however, has effectively killed any concern that he won’t be ready for Gameweek 1 – barring any further injuries, of course.

Egypt 0-1 South Africa

Saturday’s result was an unanticipated outcome: Egypt were not only the host nation of the competition but also the pre-tournament favourites with the bookmakers and made it to the final in 2017.

Egypt went into the weekend with a 100% record in this year’s tournament, while South Africa had lost two of their three group matches and only qualified for the knockout stages as one of the best third-place teams.

Salah had been a doubt for this last-16 tie with a cold but recovered to line up, as he so often does, on the right flank.

The Liverpool winger looked below-par and didn’t have much influence on proceedings, however, with South Africa full-back Sifiso Hlanti proving more than a match for the premium FPL midfielder.

Salah started brightly and fizzed an early effort wide via a deflection but struggled to make an impression beyond that, save for one superb pass through to Mahmoud Trezeguet that the Egypt attacker should have converted.

Trezeguet had missed another chance that Salah had teed up earlier in the game, while the Liverpool man himself had two other blocked shots and drilled wide from a long-range free-kick.

Ahmed El Mohamady (£4.5m) and Mohamed Elneny (£4.5m) both started the game for Egypt, with the Aston Villa right-back completing the game and Elneny substituted with seven minutes to go.

Both of those two players will also now return to their respective Premier League clubs.

For what it’s worth, Percy Tau had an excellent match – the Brighton and Hove Albion attacker has not been able to get a work permit since his move to the Amex but a strong showing from South Africa this summer could change all that.

Uganda 0-1 Senegal

While Salah’s Africa Cup of Nations has come to an end, Mane and Senegal have progressed to the tournament quarter-finals after edging past Uganda on Friday.

It will be interesting to see just how far Mane goes with the Lions of Teranga, given the concerns we outlined above about Liverpool assets being handed three-week breaks following their international efforts this summer.

Senegal next face Benin on Wednesday, with their opponents being one of the lowest-ranked teams left in the competition.

Mane’s nation, meanwhile, are now as short as 8/5 with some bookmakers to win the tournament following Egypt’s exit.

The former Southampton winger was again in the thick of the action, scoring his side’s winner after 15 minutes before missing from the spot for the second time in this tournament.

Mane broke the deadlock when racing through to finish M’Baye Niang’s pass but, having missed from 12 yards against Kenya last week, then saw a second-half spot-kick saved after he himself was felled by opposition goalkeeper Denis Onyango.

Mane and Senegal can occasionally look dangerous going forward but this was a match low on goalscoring opportunities, with Senegal having just five shots in total.

The premium FPL midfielder was again deployed on the left wing and lasted the whole 90 minutes.

Budget midfield pair Cheikhou Kouyate and Idrissa Gana Gueye (both £5.0m) also played the full game.

Morocco 1-1 Benin (1-4 Penalties)
Nigeria 3-2 Cameroon

Wolves’ Romain Saiss (£4.5m) played the full 120 minutes as Morocco bowed out of the Africa Cup of Nations after a penalty shootout defeat on Friday.

Saiss impressed in defence as Morocco bossed the possession and chances but his country were unable to break down a stubborn Benin side who triumphed on penalties after playing the last 25 minutes of extra-time with only ten men.

Alex Iwobi (£6.0m) was on the scoresheet in the other round-of-16 tie to take place on Sunday as Nigeria edged past defending champions Cameroon in a five-goal thriller.

The lively Arsenal winger scored the game’s winner on 66 minutes, charging through to finish low past Andre Onana after being slipped through by Odion Ighalo.

Wilfred Ndidi (£5.0m) played the whole 90 minutes in midfield while Brighton’s Leon Balogun (£4.5m) replaced Iwobi in stoppage time.

We’ll bring you up to speed on the other Africa Cup of Nations games and the finals of the Copa America and Gold Cup in the coming days, as well as revealing the latest on Alexis Sanchez‘s (£7.0m) injury after the Manchester United winger was substituted in his country’s 2-1 defeat to Argentina on Saturday.

I find it really hard to justify Sterling when KDB will nearly match him for much cheaper. Obviously you're assuming he stays fit but it's only last season he particularly struggled with injury

Well, you'd expect Sterling to be far more of a goal threat than KdB so I suppose it depends on whether you think he can match those points with assists.

In KDB's 2 best seasons he got 199 and 209. In Sterling's best two, Sterling got 229 and 234. I just feel like KDB with his assists will come close to matching Sterling's points for 2.5m less. Especially when we've Kane if we don't sign Sterling who usually scores a similar amount to Raheem

But then I'm ignoring 200+ points from an 11m player. 🙁 (assuming you're talking about Kane). So hard to make th se decisions

He (Kane) won’t reach 200 again. Both ankles are now a weakness, his position in the team is not the same.

Auba is likely to see more rotation with with the arrival of zaha (if it happens)

I think 3 attacking premium mids is the way forward

My thinking as well. Plan to captain salah nearly every gw anyway. I’d be fine captaining kbd for the odd gw when city have a much more favorable fixture.

      Ideally I’d like both though.

If he can’t stay healthy I’d have to find the funds for sterling though which will take some downgrades which I’m not crazy about

I prefer Sterling for the captaincy. Plus it's much easier to downgrade to KDB than upgrade to Sterling if you get the decision wrong.

I dont think KDB will match Sterling tbh, potential to be the highest scoring player in the game this season. Could be totally wrong though.

Yarmolenko looks good to me at 6.0 if he stays fit however that’s one to watch over pre season and the City game. Trosssard is definitely a gamble however he has had good goal involvement last season. Also can monitor one of the the Saints wingers for a while until a cheap mid emerges.

    Ryan Button
Trent Gomez Digne Coleman Adam Smith
    Salah Sterling Zaha Jorginho Dendonker
    Kane King Nketiah

Obviously have to watch in preseason to make sure Gomez starts and still deciding on the 4.5 defender but other than that I love this Kane, Salah, Sterling team.

    Hello all.

Why Digne? He plays for Everton. They are usually as reliable as a teenager’s mood.

Why not Mendy? 50 mill, was an assist, machine was injured - why is he suddenly out of favour?

    Much obliged.

He is genuinely just really good, on some set pieces, great delivery and although Everton are unpredictable they got good defensive returns in the end

Mendy not fit at the moment, will probably miss the beginning of the season from my understanding. And, plenty of competition.

Digne had terrific attacking stats and underlying stats last season, and Everton finished very strong and has very good fixtures.

I don’t rate Digne at 6.0. It was frustrating enough having him at 5.2 last year. Every time Everton failed to get a clean sheet I will be too tempted to sell. Prefer Chelsea and Spurs to Everton defence

Murray and Giroud to King and Deulofeu or wait to see who West Ham and Everton buy

Im definitely not sold on Murray and have been thinking of King but scared to double up on the Cherries with Brooks already in there. The lack of big top 6 frontman would put me on edge a little thats why i thought Giroud could possibly be a shrewd one if he plays pre-season that is

They play two promoted teams to begin with so the double up should be okay and then you can switch to whoever is on form when you have more information

See how Murray does in Pre-Season. Could be inspired for the start of the season.

    Which combo for 18.5 mil?

    1 Ake, Coleman, Richarlison
    2 Smith, Digne, Richarlison
    3 Ake, Digne, Fraser
    4 AWB, Coleman, Fraser
    5 AWB, Digne, Zaha
    6 Coleman, Digne, Zaha

Ask yourself, if Zaha goes to arsenal will he settle in/play 90mins every game?

Does dignes stats and the fact he’s on set pieces over Coleman make him well worth the extra .5

You have to pin down who you really want and then work around it

        Good advice.
Ok so is Digne worth 0.5 over Coleman..Very hard to say, Coleman is a good goal threat from open play but Digne has some set pieces.
I don't think I'll go with Zaha if he goes to Arsenal as Emery swaps team about too much so would then go with Fraser or one of the 7m mids

I’d say digne is a must, Coleman was awesome in the past but has been lacking last couple of seasons

In fairness to the guy he lost over a year due to having his leg literally snapped in two, and needed another 6 months of building up proper match fitness

Since the turn of the year he’s looked to be getting back to what he is capable of, as evidenced by his outscoring of both Digne and Siggy, despite not playing less games than both

Coleman is real - there are many sceptics but I’m strongly backing him to shine this season - the two bigs “ifs” are Gueye staying and coleman’s luck with further injuries

I tend to agree. So if you stick Digne in that leaves 12.5 for a defender and mid not from City or Liverpool

I think 6 by some distance

Digne is looking like FPL royalty in the making - and 40 yards across the pitch you have a player who has actually outscored him in 2019 (!) from less games (!) as he finally found his way back to full fitness after one of the most horrific injuries you will ever see... and also has FPL previous (he’s hit a 180 point season before)

Combine that with everton’s Defensive form, and if Gueye stays, it’s one of the easiest of easy double ups i can recall in FPL 🙂

        Digne or Coleman ??
What if the 0.5 can get me Laporte over Walker ??
        OR Ederson + 5m Defender over Heaton/Henderson + Walker ??

Has to be both for me I’m afraid Amey 🙂

I’m only interested in Salah, Sterling, Vardy, King from an attacking standpoint though so it’s easy for me to say

I just don’t trust those 7.0-8.0 attackers - the zaha’s, Fraser’s, and Siggy’s etc of this world - people will be suprised at just how often they deliver the dreaded 2pointers I think!

(Que hattrick s for all 3 in GW1 lol)

Well, I'm not going for any of those too buddy.
            Currently looking at:
            Heaton 4.0
            Robbo Taa Digne Walker Trippier
            Salah Sterling
            Vardy King Deulofeu
            Donkey & 2* 4.5m Midfielders.
I also don't trust current template budget Midfielders at all.
Might get Yarmalenko/James (:P ) for Trippier to Kelly

Yarmolenko is becoming more & more interesting by the day - if he is fit he could be the 6.0 we need, ahead of Ings/JWP/Adams etc

Deulofeu is eating a bit of your budget there - I have Yarmo/Ings/Adams in my draft which allows Coleman instead of Tripps and Laporte instead of Walker

And Henderson’s move looks to be inching closer which gives another 4.5 GK option 🙂

*On Trippier I owned him for a long time last season & hated every second of it, once bitten twice shy as they say!

He could do well though with those fixtures

Not feeling Trippier pick too tbh.
More of a placeholder for 6m Midfielder & Kelly

                Yeah.
Deulofeu is a bit nostalgic pick tbh after great end of the last season 😛
                Yarmalenko could be great.
Might follow you and get Henderson behind the Defense too.
                Thank you 🙂

      Jota if you ask.
I'd rate Deulofeu/King/Wood more than both of those as one can't finish goals & other doesn't finish 90 minutes while playing once a week and now as Thursday football for glorious UEL.
