Liverpool and West Ham began their pre-season campaign on Thursday with mixed implications for Fantasy Premier League managers.

Obviously, we are still at the early stage of summer friendlies so a lot of our observations should be taken with a pinch of salt, to some extent.

However, both of Thursday’s matches threw up talking points that we have to make sure we stay on top of.

Tranmere Rovers 0-6 Liverpool

Divock Origi (right) will be on plenty of Fantasy radars this summer

Goals: Nathaniel Clyne, Rhian Brewster x2, Curtis Jones, Divock Origi (£5.5m), Bobby Duncan

Assists: Brewster, Harry Wilson, James Milner (£5.5m), Ben Woodburn, Paul Glatzel

Jurgen Klopp mostly used the kids as his side began their pre-season campaign with a 6-0 win at Tranmere, a match that featured two Liverpool teams getting 45 minutes each.

However, there were still eight senior players with FPL prices who were involved for the Reds.

Divock Origi (£5.5m) has already been discussed as a potential budget differential for the start of the season as Sadio Mané‘s (£11.5m) involvement at the African Cup of Nations goes on.

The Belgian forward was used as the centre-forward in a front-three for the second 45 minutes and came away with a goal to his name.

He was also credited with his ability to hold the ball up for his wider colleagues.

“Sadio Mané is in the semi-finals [of the AFCON], so that means he has two more games for sure and will come [back] late.” – Jurgen Klopp

With Mané’s Senegal team now the favourites to win the African Cup of Nations, there is definitely a chance that Origi may have to come into the team for him either in the Community Shield or in Gameweek 1.

Furthermore, Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) is also expected back late after his Copa America involvement, as is Mohamed Salah (£12.5m), although their international duty is already over.

“The Brazilians have finally finished their 30-month season, exactly like Mo, and they will come but we will not have a pre-season together, we will only have a week before we start with the games. Tonight it looked like we can find some solutions” – Jurgen Klopp

Either way, Origi will be using pre-season to stake a claim for a place in the Liverpool starting XI so we should continue to keep an eye on him.

Against Tranmere, Joe Gomez (£5.5m) and Joel Matip (£5.5m) both played but not together. One was used in each half, the England international in the first and Cameroon defender Matip in the second.

Both centre-backs have the potential to offer a budget route into the Liverpool defence alongside Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) this season but at this early stage, it is still unclear which it will be.

Dejan Lovren (£5.5m) did not get any minutes although there is plenty of the pre-season campaign left to play.

Fabinho (£5.5m), Adam Lallana (£6.0m), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (£6.5m) and James Milner (£5.5m) were also treated to 45 minutes against Tranmere, the latter claiming an assist.

These players are all likely to be gunning for a place in the starting XI for Gameweek 1, with a particular interest in Oxlade-Chamberlain as he makes his return from injury.

Several options in the central midfield position may struggle to be fit for the start of the new campaign.

Naby Keita‘s (£6.0m) Guinea were knocked out in the second round but the central midfielder also aggravated an adductor injury whilst in Egypt.

Meanwhile, Xherdan Shaqiri (£6.5m) is out for “a while” according to Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool first-half XI (4-3-3): Mignolet; Larouci, Gomez, Phillips, Clyne; Milner, Lallana, Oxlade-Chamberlain; Kent, Brewster, Wilson.

Liverpool second-half XI (4-3-3): Jaros; A Lewis, Matip, Johnston, Hoever; Fabinho, C Jones, Woodburn; Glatzel (Atherton 78′), Origi, Duncan

SCR Altach 2-3 West Ham United

Manuel Pellegrini has a vacancy up front at West Ham and Fantasy managers will be keen to know who will fill it

Goals: Carlos Sánchez (£4.5m), Michail Antonio (£7.0m), Issa Diop (£4.5m)

Assists: Robert Snodgrass (£5.5m), Mark Noble (£5.0m), Jack Wilshere (£5.0m)

There is keen interest in who will occupy the number one centre-forward slot at West Ham this season in the wake of Marko Arnautovic’s departure.

Michail Antonio (£7.0m) drew first blood in the race to replace the Austrian as the Hammers began their pre-season campaign in Arnautovic’s homeland.

The FPL midfielder was deployed up front in a 4-2-3-1 formation against SCR Altach and also found the back of the net too.

After Carlos Sánchez (£4.5m) had headed home a Robert Snodgrass (£5.5m) corner, Antonio made it 2-0 with a smart run to fool the Altach defence.

Mark Noble (£5.0m) played a long ball from deep to the pacey attacker, who beat the offside trap, rounded the goalkeeper and slotted home.

Obviously, it is early days in West Ham’s pre-season campaign so we certainly don’t want to encourage interest in Antonio based off one outing.

But is worth making ourselves aware that Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernández (£6.0m) may have to hold off competition from him to claim the centre-forward role from him this summer.

Manuel Pellegrini largely went for the approach of two teams per half, making eight changes at half-time.

Just three players were treated to more than an hour of football in Austria.

One of those was new goalkeeper Roberto (£4.5m) who played 76 minutes before being replaced by fellow new recruit David Martin.

Lukasz Fabianski (£5.0m) was one of six players priced up by FPL to have no involvement in the game.

New signing Pablo Fornals (£6.5m) was one of them, while Fabian Balbuena‘s (£4.5m) involvement with Paraguay at the Copa America has delayed his return to the West Ham camp and Arthur Masuaku (£4.5m) is on leave following DR Congo’s elimination from the African Cup of Nations in the second round.

Aaron Cresswell (£5.0m) was left out of the matchday squad for precautionary reasons, while Xande Silva (£4.5m) also played no part.

“It was a good workout. We worked well physically but we conceded two goals, which was too much, but we won, which is the most important thing.” – Issa Diop

“I’m happy to score but obviously it was just a friendly game, so to get a goal is not very important, but we always want to win every game, so of course I am happy about this goal.” – Issa Diop

West Ham XI (4-2-3-1): Roberto (Martin 76′); Fredericks (Zabaleta 45′), Diop (Rice 68′), Ogbonna (Reid 45′), Johnson (Byram 68′); Sanchez (Obiang 45′), Noble (Cullen 45′); Snodgrass (Yarmolenko 45′), Lanzini (Wilshere 45′), Felipe Anderson (Diangana 45′); Antonio (Chicharito 46).

A close call, but I'd go with Jimenez and Perez, given the very low number of offensive returns I expect by Kante (Vardy could only slightly outscore Jimi).

Keeping an eye on Brighton pre season as if they go for a more attacking approach under the new manager, March and Andone could be cheap enablers - would be interesting to here Brighton fans thoughts?

If so I’m considering Andone as second striker and doing something like this:

    Pope
    Robbo TAA Digne Coleman Cathcart
    Salah Sterling KDB
    Vardy Andone

    Bench; 4.0 Dendoncker 4.5mid 4.5striker

Alternatively Cathcart->4.0 if a playing defender emerges and 4.5 mid to Jorginho/March

Lol I know he can be a card magnet but surely he’s Brighton’s best striker if they’re going to press from the front? What are your thoughts on March?

West Ham are one of those teams that have great start on fixtures but it is so difficult to nail down who is worth getting.

Anderson faded in and out of relevance last season, Arnie gone, defence suspect, centre forward unclear pending transfers.

    Who are people looking at?

TAA (NOR) VVD (NOR) Digne (cpl) Zinchenko (whu)

Salah (NOR, C) Fraser (SHU) Zaha (EVE)

      I like the idea.

But, if your aim is just to maximise the points at the start then why don’t you base your idea around a GW1 bench boost which gives a good team for GW2 and then wildcard gw3?

Well not maximise points that much, just playing fixtures best I can. I don’t think the fixtures are good enough to justify a bench boost over a DGW

Quite a few on here bench boosted GW1 last year and did very well with it.

Bench boost on a DGW just never seems to work for me unfortunately 😆 I might give it a go....

If you don’t bench boost, your team looks good.

It's an interesting idea but I'm not sure that even with fixtures it's worth betting Vs city that it will work out enough in your favour to use up a wildcard. Also I would want to wc gw4 when city really fixtures really get golden gw3 I would still want salah cap and u wouldn't necessarily want him in WC rather go for an Aguero sterling double up from gw4 onwards.Having said that because these days city pool so dominant ones wildcard doesn't tend to change ones team later on in the first half of the season in any case so could be worth a pop but would prefer WC gw4 for the fixture swing towards city favour ( not that pools are bad just that city that much better imo.) Also if you want to go for this it might be worth starting with kane gw1 and changing to abamyanf gw3 just a thought

Due to rotation risk I would rarely captain Sterling and it is why he is not in the squad. Kane is a different matter but on the fence atm. Getting KDB who I hope turns to gold gives me 2.5 mil to play with. I could get 2 5.5's and have Sterling. My biggest decision atm

Very interesting squad with parma-cap Salah the only 10m+ asset.

    Bench: 4.0 dedonker Hayden Kelly
Really liking this team ticks all the boxes for me. I would be looking at getting sterling in gw4 to captain either using Vardy for makeweight to upgrade a midfielder when Leicester fixtures go sour or just do Salah to sterling as I'd rather cap sterling pretty much every fixture gw4-10 and I'm under the opinion that you only need one +11 mil player to permacap each week and can then spread the value for superior overall points maximisation elsewhere. Thoughts ?

I don't really look at things like that I assess each player on their own merits vs other players at the same price bracket . For me given fixtures and attacking potential Coleman beats any other 5.5 defender / 6.0 attacker for the start of season and that's a slot I need in my team to get the structure I want. Same goes for digne vs the other 6.0 defenders / 6.5 attackers. They are superior picks in their own right to their evenly priced counterparts Im not interested on whether I should " double up " or not .

I get what you're saying, they are good assets with attacking potential and that's why you select them...but doesn't change the fact that if Everton concede only 1 goal, you lose 2 clean sheets

Almost Everyone going with 2 Liverpool defense, I’m going to spread the risk and go Robertson and Laporte instead. I still believe Robertson is the best Liverpool defensive asset to own

    Pope
    Robertson Laporte Digne PVA Cathcart
    Salah Sterling Tielemans
    Wilson Vardy

    Button Noble Dendoncker Greenwood

    Any thoughts?

Because everyone is going with 2 pool defenders you are increasing your risk.. Not spreading it

Exactly. It's somewhat like saying because everyone is going for Sterling, you're spreading the risk by going for B.Silva and Alli. It could still work, but that's not decreasing your risk, it's increasing it.

Slightly different point of view that might support your initial choice.

The risk of not having double defence is one cs and attacking returns. The cs is covered perhaps by a City cs and arguably Laporte and VVD have similar chances of attacking returns. You’re likely down just one cs each time Liverpool hit - that’s not a great loss and perhaps offset by City and the inherent risk of double defence. It’s really not comparable to not having Mo or Sterling

The greater danger imo is not having both TAA and Robbo as they are more likely to hit consistent attacking returns than VVD or Laporte who could match them in the long run but are probable to return unevenly in attack.

Burnley and Palace are taking risks though. They're not pushing forwards with signings, they are just hoping to not be worse than 3 other teams each season. Burnley were in the relegation battle for most of last season.

Decided this year to not look at template or what everyone else is doing and go with my own flow, template is there for a reason though. Thoughts on my team below? Djenepro and sema on shakey ground in my team. They'll definitely have to leave if no cheap options become available as apart from Sendocker my bench is non playing

    Pope
    Robertson taa digne Coleman
    Djenepro Salah zaha Sema
    Kane aguero

Djenepo could easily not start to begin with, and Sema definitely will not. So you're essentially playing with a team of

      Pope
      Robertson taa digne Coleman
      Salah Saha Dendoncker
      Kane Aguero

One of Aguero, Salah and Kane needs to leave

      1. @persecuted_by_mods
        7 years, 1 month ago

Thanks yes understand the risk with djenepo and sema, most likely both won't be in my team come the first week. I think I'm pretty set on keeping aguero Kane and Salah (not all season but to start with) could be genius or could leave me chasing

It's smart to cover two large premiums like that. I've only got one player over 10 mil (Sterling) and that probably isn't going to end well.

There's many ways to skin a cat, I'm sure your method will be fine too. The worst team in the world making one transfer each week but captaining the highest scoring player would do amazing no matter how terrible the team.

Good team. Sterling / Aguero - little difference, same price point same team both will do well.

I’m on the double Everton defence at the mo, but I’m shifting to switching digne to azpi or a city defender. No zouma worries me

Coleman outscored Digne in 2019 YTD

I’m not sold on Kane - if he has another dry August then is all that cash tied up with no real benefit

True he did very well, I'm just trying not to be too clever and sticking with the set piece taker and freekick taker

Not sold on Kane either but willing to forgive in an injury plagued season, disjointed spurs and not in their real stadium. I think they'll go back to the old spurs this season. Hopefully a real break has done him good and easy enough to downgrade

      Attack scares me.

Defence I’d probably only go one Everton just for cover. Appreciate their start to the season but would look to change that up with City if you can.

Very against the grain and current templates but you can’t criticise that front 3 / 4 of Aguero, Kane, Salah and Zaha (if he stays a palace). That alone in some game weeks will be 40 points

      1. @persecuted_by_mods
        7 years, 1 month ago

        Thanks man

I was thinking the exact same thing with Coleman to a city Def, undecided yet

That's my thinking, want proven points scorers, with good fixtures to just get me points. I do have to work on sema and djenepo but there's so many ways to play this game I've seen people stock up on heavy hitters to the point they wouldn't even put 11 players out and still do well!

    RMT please; after a number of years with a premium attack the strategy has changed for this coming season. Something I’m still struggling with TBH so have gone big on defence and obviously the two needed in midfield. Also tried to take a punt on some penalty takers across the team;

    Ederson
TAA / VVD / Digne (Dunk / Kelly)
    Salah / Sterling / Siggy / Milivojevic / Jorginho
    King / Jota (Nketiah)

    Thoughts?

God, I'm so beating myself up over this. Not Vardy - he's locked in for me along with Salah. It's KdB over Sterling. When I lose Sterling I get KdB, a fourth premium defender and good mid-range midfielders. Will the extra points for the defenders and midfielders make up the difference between Sterling and a fit Kev? I guess I won't decide until after the Comm Shield and I know more about the whole City line up including Zinchenko as well as how Leicester and Everton are looking going into GW1.

FPL towers have not made it too easy for us. Every man and his dog will have 2 Liv defs, but after that it isn't so easy. Zinchenko over Laporte would give 1 million extra, which makes Sterling easier choice. I am uncertain whether I will have either in the beginning.

Try contacting Marcus at info@fantasy-footballrus.co.uk It's £20 in, with £5 of that going to Birmingham Children's Hospital and a Cancer Charity. He manages to get a few ex-footballers (Midlands based) to sign up as well including Steve Claridge and Neil Emblen.

Hi. I'm wondering if anyone has tried or had success with the following strategy...
Using more than one transfer each game week, accepting the transfer point hits, but jumping on enough bandwagons to build team value high enough for it to be a significant advantage in the second half of the season.
I've heard of it working, but I'm sceptical.
    Any thoughts?

      It doesn't work like that.

Mate I do not remember the exact figure but I took a lot of hits last season and most of them worked out.

If I was to guess it would be over 100 points taken in hits and I finished 31238 and at times flirted inside the top 20k but I messed up my chip strategy. I even wildcarded GW 2 last year.

The trick is to take no more than a -8. People including me sometimes go crazy and take -16s and that never works.

Well that's certainly higher than I finished. Thanks for the info.

What type of player is Norwood? Heard him talked about but know nothing about him or SHU. 3 nice fixtures to start the season

I heard he takes set pieces and could be a good little cheap asset.

Yeah, a sort of Moutinho/Neves-lite deeper central midfielder. Took a lot of their FKs/corners and was second in the Championship for key passes but only four shots in the box all season.
