Origi continues fight for Gameweek 1 starting berth

Fantasy Premier League managers learned a little more about Liverpool and Spurs in their Sunday pre-season matches.

It is admittedly still early days for both clubs but it is important for us to stay on top of the ever-evolving picture.

We’ve got all the latest talking points from Liverpool, Spurs, Arsenal and Aston Villa.

Sevilla 2-1 Liverpool

Goals: Divock Origi (£5.5m)

Assists: None

Jurgen Klopp continued to use two line-ups for each half as Liverpool lost to Sevilla on Sunday.

The Reds’ manager is still making plenty of changes despite this meeting marking the fourth of pre-season.

It was the first half line-up that looked closer to the usual suspects, with a few exceptions.

Andrew Robertson (£7.0m), Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.0m) and Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) played the first 45 minutes but were joined by Nathaniel Phillips at centre-back and Andy Lonergan in goal.

Even though Klopp is not past making extensive changes in these matches yet, we have uncovered a potential favourite in the race to join van Dijk at centre-back in Gameweek 1.

Joe Gomez‘s (£5.5m) 195 minutes across the four matches is the joint-second highest behind only Simon Mignolet (£4.5m).

Crucially, it is more than any recognised centre-back at this stage, with Joel Matip (£5.5m) on 150 and Dejan Lovren (£5.5m) on 120.

Divock Origi (£5.5m) continues to stake his claim for a place in the Liverpool starting line-up both for the Community Shield and Gameweek 1 in the absence of Sadio Mané (£11.5m).

He started and scored against Sevilla to take his pre-season minute count to 195 in four matches, more than any senior forward player.

First-half Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Lonergan; Robertson, van Dijk, Phillips, Alexander-Arnold; Oxlade-Chamberlain, Wijnaldum, Henderson; Woodburn, Origi, Wilson.

Second-half Liverpool XI: Mignolet; A Lewis, Lovren, Hoever, Gomez, Larouci (Duncan 80′); Fabinho, Milner, C Jones; Kent, Brewster.

Juventus 2-3 Tottenham Hotspur

Harry Kane scored a spectacular goal against Juventus on Sunday

Goals: Erik Lamela (£6.0m), Lucas Moura (£7.5m), Harry Kane (£11.0m)

Assists: Troy Parrott, Tanguy Ndombele (£6.0m), Moura

There is only so much we can read into Spurs’ 3-2 win over Juventus as it was their first match of pre-season.

Mauricio Pochettino even admitted after the game that he would have rather faced a lower league side than a European giant at this stage of the summer.

“I think they’re very good games, very competitive. To be honest we are very sure in our preparation. I am not too much of a fan of competing this early in pre-season in this type of game because in the end, you are competing with big, big clubs. Always that is a period that we used to play friendlies with League Two sides or games in our training ground in the first 15-20 days and then move on to play these games, but for different circumstances and because to give times to our players to rest after a tough season we start some players with only one week to travel and play in a different environment, weather and adapt.” – Mauricio Pochettino

Fantasy managers got a first look at new signing Tanguy Ndombele (£6.0m) against Juventus and he certainly looked good.

The central midfielder was powerful in the way he drove forward with the ball and incisive in his passing too, picking out Lucas Moura (£7.5m) for Spurs’ second goal.

Ndombele also showed that he could have plenty to offer in the final third too as he went on a marauding run in the second half before shooting just inches wide of the post.

“All is new for (Ndombele), but I think with the first touch of the ball he started to show the quality from him. It was amazing and you can see when he runs something can happen. He has the capacity to add to the team different things and I hope during the season he can help the team achieve all that they want.” – Mauricio Pochettino

Harry Kane (£11.0m) also drew some attention with his spectacular goal from the half-way line, although he only played the second half, coming on for youngster Troy Parrott at the break.

Meanwhile, Hugo Lloris (£5.5m) was absent due to an illness, which saw Paulo Gazzaniga (£4.5m) start in goal.

Spurs XI (4-3-1-2): Gazzaniga; Georgiou (White 71′), Tanganga (Vertonghen 46), Alderweireld (Foyth 46′), Walker-Peters (Marsh 71′); Skipp (Bowden 90+2′), Winks (Roles 63′), Alli (Sissoko 46′); Lamela (Ndombele 63′); Son (Moura 46′), Parrott (Kane 46′).

Fiorentina 0-3 Arsenal

Arsenal were comfortable winners over Fiorentina on Sunday

Goals: Eddie Nketiah x2 (£4.5m), Joe Willock

Assists: Sead Kolasinac (£5.5m), Alexandre Lacazette (£9.5m)

Unai Emery continues to experiment with his defence as Arsenal beat Fiorentina 3-0.

He started with a 3-4-3 formation that featured Calum Chambers, Shkodran Mustafi (£5.5m) and Nacho Monreal (£5.0m), while Sead Kolasinac (£5.5m) and Carl Jenkinson (£4.5m) were used as wing-backs.

With Hector Bellerin (£5.5m) still out injured, Jenkinson has been enjoying plenty of game-time during the pre-season.

Only Robbie Burton (195) and Mustafi (189) have recorded more minutes during the summer than the former West Ham loanee’s 170.

In the second half, Emery moved back to a four-man defence with Monreal shifting to the left, Jenkinson retaining his place on the right and Chambers and Mustafi at centre-back until their substitutions.

It was a more youthful attack chosen against Fiorentina compared to the side that beat Bayern Munich the previous week.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) was not involved, while Alexandre Lacazette (£9.5m) featured only in the second half, but still came away with two assists.

While Eddie Nketiah (£4.5m) is unlikely to trouble the first-team too much this season, his development continues as he hopes to perhaps step into the shoes of an injured colleague.

The youngster currently has the fourth-highest pre-season minutes total according to our spreadsheet – and has also been involved in more goals than any of his colleagues two (two scored, one assisted).

Arsenal (3-4-3): Martinez (46′ Leno); Chambers (Mkhitaryan 63′), Mustafi (Medley 80′), Monreal (Martinelli 80′); Kolasinac (Lacazette 46′), Olayinka (Sokratis 63′), Burton (Thompson 80′), Jenkinson (Xhaka 80′); Nelson (Özil 79′), Nketiah (Maitland-Niles 80′), Saka (Willock 63′).

Shrewsbury Town 0-1 Aston Villa

Hogan scored Villa’s only goal of the game as they beat Shrewsbury

Goals: Scott Hogan

Assists: Wesley (£6.0m)

Aston Villa’s 1-0 win over Shrewsbury Town offered some minor Fantasy lessons, but they are still just two games into their pre-season schedule.

Jed Steer (£4.5m), last season’s play-off hero, was the only player to feature in both halves as Dean Smith went with two XIs for each period.

He has been tipped to be the number one in 2019/20 but looked shakey against Shrewsbury. He made several errors at the New Meadow and never looked comfortable.

The first-choice back-four still looks unclear, with eight defenders all having played a total of 90 minutes across the two friendlies so far.

While Wesley (£6.0m) is likely to be the first-choice centre-forward this season, we should keep an eye on Scott Hogan and Keinan Davis (£4.5m).

Hogan’s future has been up in the air for some time after going out on loan last season but he has now been involved in both pre-season games, scoring against Shrewsbury.

Davis also started up-front at the New Meadow, who is down as a £4.5m midfielder on FPL, so he warrants monitoring too, although Jonathan Kodjia (£5.5m) may be back soon following his African Cup of Nations campaign with the Ivory Coast.

First-half Aston Villa XI (4-2-3-1): Steer; N Taylor, Mings, Konsa, Guilbert; Grealish, Bjarnason; Green, McGinn, Jota; Davis.

Second-half Aston Villa XI (4-2-3-1): Steer; Targett, Hause, Chester, Bree; O’Hare, Lansbury, Hourihane, Hepburn-Murphy; Hogan, Wesley.

My last comment earlier today was asking if anyone was looking at Billy Sharp at 6.0. Fast forward a few hours he scores a hattrick. Can he really be overlooked with him being their main man, seems to always score goals.

Sheffield United, so easy one to avoid for most.

I'm sure he'll pick up a few owners if he continues to look Sharp 😉

And that's my point people just see Sheffield and Billy Sharp and laugh. But they were solid last year, probably the best team Villa played IMO.

Well if you think they are gonna be decent you should go for it, he will be the man if they do anything.

Personally I think they will finish rock bottom. Maybe challenging Derby for their record low points total.

I think they will suprise a few, never underestimate the underdog. I do think I'm going with him for the first 5 and then seems a decent time to swap to Pukki when Norwich fixtures change

Challenging Derby for record low points total? You need to do your research on Chris Wilder mate - he's a serial winner, outperforms expectations time and time again. We may well go down, but if you think we'll go down without a fight, that's because you know nothing about our team - or our manager

He’s a championship striker through and through.

Won’t get more than 2 PL goals this season.

Never know he's never been given a real chance, people wrote Sheffield off in the championship and they surprised everyone. If Sharp is only scoring two goals who is scoring Sheffield's goals?

Don't see much more options around 6.0m other than the Southampton two though. Yes it's Sheffield I just see Sharp as Vital to everything Sheffield do.

I think the only “options” with the 6.0s are
          - Go down to a £4.5m, use that £1.5m elsewhere wisely, and only have 2 up top, or
-Go up to £6.5m and get someone who we think will do considerably better for a little more money

I'd say 4 of the first 5 are decent for a newly promoted team. Yes it's a pure punt but we have to be different somewhere. If at 6m he can come out with at least 2 goals from the first 5 it's definitely seems worth it.

Honestly, good luck with it. I hope you’re right.

That said, I expect most, if not all, of the 6.5s will outperform him in the first five weeks and some will do so considerably more than the 0.5m/8% extra you pay for them.

But I know nothing. He could be the guy to have for a five week purple patch. He could be the guy to have all season.

Considering his opening 2 fixtures he is a valid punt and could early bandwagon. That said though over the years I've failed on so many promising promoted strikers it's probably not one I'll take. I'm still have emotional trauma from Sylvan Ebanks Blake a decade ago and I've certainly been bitten by many more since ....

        Ryan, 4.0

        TAA, VVD, Digne, Zinchenko, Gibson

        Sterling, Salah, Perez, Norwood, Dendoncker

        Kane, King, Greenwood.

The odd sacrifice, but horribly weak is an overstatement.

      My attempt 4-4-2

      Ederson - (button)
      Taa-vvd-coleman-holding (Kelly)
      Salah-sterling-perez-jorgihno (dendonck)
      Kane-king- (greenwood)

Pros: all 3 plus double lpool and good keeper

Cons: holding and jorgihno or another 9.5 combo have to start so doable once some of those undervalued gems are unearthed

That's what it hinges on, finding a gem in midfield/attack.

        Ryan/Burnley keeper helps too.

Think Ederson is a luxury in this set up. It’s less money you can move upfield later for the gem. Just 0.5 more gets you a 5-5 mid.
There are a few at that level who could take off - not seeing a 5.0 doing that

      Read the rules.

Passing/tackling bonus make some players a lot more pickable.

For example Jorginho was a beast last season just because his base score was 2 + 3 passing bonus.

Hi everyone, I went to the Cambridge vs Leicester game today so I would like to share my thoughts on the game. Obviously I won't remember everything so if you want to know anything, feel free to ask.

Leicester won 3-0. Goals from Maguire (Chillwell assist), Iheanacho (Barnes) and Choudhary (mistake from defence)

-> Leicester played a 4141 formation with Mendy and Choudhary in DM.
-> I can confidently say Maguire will be leaving. He was captained despite Schmeichel playing also. After scoring he went over the fans for a while and clapped. At the end of the game him and Schmeichel were the only players to go over to the away fans and sign shirts, clap etc. Maguire spent a while there and continued to clap as if he was saying goodbyes.
-> Tielemans took free-kicks and corners when Madisson wasn't on pitch but when Madisson was on pitch he took over duties.
-> The full backs were very promising. Over-lapping at every chance and Pereira could've scored once or twice albeit from some excellent stops from Cambridge's keeper.
-> Tielemans was centre to most chances created for Leicester, he'll get a lot of assists for sure. He got forward a lot looks a great option
-> Demarai Gray was constantly coming into the middle from the right and taking long shots at every chance
-> Vardy wasn't at his best. He had one good moment where he made a run and Tielemans played a lovely through ball. Vardy made a good shot but the keeper saved really well.
-> Barnes looked promising when he came on, got an assist and very close to scoring. He played on the left
-> Could've been 6 or more for Leicester today but Cambridge keeper was class.

Feel free to ask anything as I defo didnt cover anything 🙂

    Slightly different

    Leno
    Trent Robertson Signe Ake
    Salah Sterling Fraser Moutinho
    Pukki Vardy

Ake is goal threat for Bournemouth, and I know their defense is awful, Pukki in really for the GW2 vs Newcastle..

If Smith let's him play with the shackles loose he could be a good but I doubt that will happen. He will most likely be keeping the team together and creating for the creators.

He tends to create the chances for someone else to assist and score. Nota bad option at only 6. Think I'd save .5 and go for Mcginn or El Ghazi though

From what Ive seen so far it looks like Lampard prefers a 4-2-3-1 formation. So Barkley, Mount and RLC will be competing for the one spot in the middle of the 3. Expect plenty of rotation.

Kovacic, Jorginho and Kante look to be competing for two spots deeper, leaving one of Bakayoko and Drinkwater as back-up. I would guess Bakayoko will leave and Drinkwater will sit on the bench.

Yes, when RLC is back, that could be a while yet though. From what i've seen and read, i don't think Mount has done enough to be nothing more than an impact sub.

Be interesting to see if Willian gets used there, always thought he would be better as a 10. Certainly has the workrate.

Possible but he won't be back until early August though, and Hudson Odoi is injured. That leaves Pulisic and Pedro as the two obvious choices for the wide positions at the start of the season. Kenedy is the only other winger that is available although Barkley could also potentially play there

King had a rubbish record at scoring when Wilson was on the pitch. 4 in 28 last season. He depends on pens for value - they are unpredictable and need time. Brooks was much better in open play returns which are more likely in east fuxtures.

Same team. Two players with very different profiles.

If you had 1m itb what’s best upgrade option:
    A) Zinchenko to Laporte
    B) Maddison to Siggy (anyone else at 7-8m range?)
    C) Wilson to Vardy
    D) keep the cash itb

      A for me.

There’s always the chance that it’s Laporte who will fill in at left back!!! Currently have Zinc but I’m not exactly convinced. CS only and not nailed.

    Scenario:

After Christmas and New Year had came and gone last season, I was totally and utterly out with the washing in my works' mini league. Luckily, we had a hefty monthly pot up for grabs as well as the overall prize so I decided to concentrate on them. Dishonourably, I created a new team at the start of every month (free of hits) and I totally mopped up for the rest of the season - much to the chagrin of my erstwhile fantasy colleagues.

    Moral:

Build your team for either GW1 - GW4 (international break) or GW1 - GW5 (favouring teams with 60% home games) and get yourself in a position of strength. Then, wildcard when you know things that you couldn't possibly imagine right now and enjoy the rest of the season.

    Simples.

    Out of curiosity.

What would your team be, if it couldn’t have any of the 15 you plan to pick presently?

    I’ve got

    Ederson/Woodburn

    VVD/Lap/Coleman(Aaron’s/Smith)
    Sterling/Sig/Anderson/Maddison/Perez
    Kane/King(Wickham)

Bar Salah for GW1, I like it just as much as my current team
