Origi continues fight for Gameweek 1 starting berth

Fantasy Premier League managers learned a little more about Liverpool and Spurs in their Sunday pre-season matches.

It is admittedly still early days for both clubs but it is important for us to stay on top of the ever-evolving picture.

We’ve got all the latest talking points from Liverpool, Spurs, Arsenal and Aston Villa.

Sevilla 2-1 Liverpool

Goals: Divock Origi (£5.5m)

Assists: None

Jurgen Klopp continued to use two line-ups for each half as Liverpool lost to Sevilla on Sunday.

The Reds’ manager is still making plenty of changes despite this meeting marking the fourth of pre-season.

It was the first half line-up that looked closer to the usual suspects, with a few exceptions.

Andrew Robertson (£7.0m), Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.0m) and Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) played the first 45 minutes but were joined by Nathaniel Phillips at centre-back and Andy Lonergan in goal.

Even though Klopp is not past making extensive changes in these matches yet, we have uncovered a potential favourite in the race to join van Dijk at centre-back in Gameweek 1.

Joe Gomez‘s (£5.5m) 195 minutes across the four matches is the joint-second highest behind only Simon Mignolet (£4.5m).

Crucially, it is more than any recognised centre-back at this stage, with Joel Matip (£5.5m) on 150 and Dejan Lovren (£5.5m) on 120.

Divock Origi (£5.5m) continues to stake his claim for a place in the Liverpool starting line-up both for the Community Shield and Gameweek 1 in the absence of Sadio Mané (£11.5m).

He started and scored against Sevilla to take his pre-season minute count to 195 in four matches, more than any senior forward player.

First-half Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Lonergan; Robertson, van Dijk, Phillips, Alexander-Arnold; Oxlade-Chamberlain, Wijnaldum, Henderson; Woodburn, Origi, Wilson.

Second-half Liverpool XI: Mignolet; A Lewis, Lovren, Hoever, Gomez, Larouci (Duncan 80′); Fabinho, Milner, C Jones; Kent, Brewster.

Juventus 2-3 Tottenham Hotspur

Harry Kane scored a spectacular goal against Juventus on Sunday

Goals: Erik Lamela (£6.0m), Lucas Moura (£7.5m), Harry Kane (£11.0m)

Assists: Troy Parrott, Tanguy Ndombele (£6.0m), Moura

There is only so much we can read into Spurs’ 3-2 win over Juventus as it was their first match of pre-season.

Mauricio Pochettino even admitted after the game that he would have rather faced a lower league side than a European giant at this stage of the summer.

“I think they’re very good games, very competitive. To be honest we are very sure in our preparation. I am not too much of a fan of competing this early in pre-season in this type of game because in the end, you are competing with big, big clubs. Always that is a period that we used to play friendlies with League Two sides or games in our training ground in the first 15-20 days and then move on to play these games, but for different circumstances and because to give times to our players to rest after a tough season we start some players with only one week to travel and play in a different environment, weather and adapt.” – Mauricio Pochettino

Fantasy managers got a first look at new signing Tanguy Ndombele (£6.0m) against Juventus and he certainly looked good.

The central midfielder was powerful in the way he drove forward with the ball and incisive in his passing too, picking out Lucas Moura (£7.5m) for Spurs’ second goal.

Ndombele also showed that he could have plenty to offer in the final third too as he went on a marauding run in the second half before shooting just inches wide of the post.

“All is new for (Ndombele), but I think with the first touch of the ball he started to show the quality from him. It was amazing and you can see when he runs something can happen. He has the capacity to add to the team different things and I hope during the season he can help the team achieve all that they want.” – Mauricio Pochettino

Harry Kane (£11.0m) also drew some attention with his spectacular goal from the half-way line, although he only played the second half, coming on for youngster Troy Parrott at the break.

Meanwhile, Hugo Lloris (£5.5m) was absent due to an illness, which saw Paulo Gazzaniga (£4.5m) start in goal.

Spurs XI (4-3-1-2): Gazzaniga; Georgiou (White 71′), Tanganga (Vertonghen 46), Alderweireld (Foyth 46′), Walker-Peters (Marsh 71′); Skipp (Bowden 90+2′), Winks (Roles 63′), Alli (Sissoko 46′); Lamela (Ndombele 63′); Son (Moura 46′), Parrott (Kane 46′).

Fiorentina 0-3 Arsenal

Arsenal were comfortable winners over Fiorentina on Sunday

Goals: Eddie Nketiah x2 (£4.5m), Joe Willock

Assists: Sead Kolasinac (£5.5m), Alexandre Lacazette (£9.5m)

Unai Emery continues to experiment with his defence as Arsenal beat Fiorentina 3-0.

He started with a 3-4-3 formation that featured Calum Chambers, Shkodran Mustafi (£5.5m) and Nacho Monreal (£5.0m), while Sead Kolasinac (£5.5m) and Carl Jenkinson (£4.5m) were used as wing-backs.

With Hector Bellerin (£5.5m) still out injured, Jenkinson has been enjoying plenty of game-time during the pre-season.

Only Robbie Burton (195) and Mustafi (189) have recorded more minutes during the summer than the former West Ham loanee’s 170.

In the second half, Emery moved back to a four-man defence with Monreal shifting to the left, Jenkinson retaining his place on the right and Chambers and Mustafi at centre-back until their substitutions.

It was a more youthful attack chosen against Fiorentina compared to the side that beat Bayern Munich the previous week.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) was not involved, while Alexandre Lacazette (£9.5m) featured only in the second half, but still came away with two assists.

While Eddie Nketiah (£4.5m) is unlikely to trouble the first-team too much this season, his development continues as he hopes to perhaps step into the shoes of an injured colleague.

The youngster currently has the fourth-highest pre-season minutes total according to our spreadsheet – and has also been involved in more goals than any of his colleagues two (two scored, one assisted).

Arsenal (3-4-3): Martinez (46′ Leno); Chambers (Mkhitaryan 63′), Mustafi (Medley 80′), Monreal (Martinelli 80′); Kolasinac (Lacazette 46′), Olayinka (Sokratis 63′), Burton (Thompson 80′), Jenkinson (Xhaka 80′); Nelson (Özil 79′), Nketiah (Maitland-Niles 80′), Saka (Willock 63′).

Shrewsbury Town 0-1 Aston Villa

Hogan scored Villa’s only goal of the game as they beat Shrewsbury

Goals: Scott Hogan

Assists: Wesley (£6.0m)

Aston Villa’s 1-0 win over Shrewsbury Town offered some minor Fantasy lessons, but they are still just two games into their pre-season schedule.

Jed Steer (£4.5m), last season’s play-off hero, was the only player to feature in both halves as Dean Smith went with two XIs for each period.

He has been tipped to be the number one in 2019/20 but looked shakey against Shrewsbury. He made several errors at the New Meadow and never looked comfortable.

The first-choice back-four still looks unclear, with eight defenders all having played a total of 90 minutes across the two friendlies so far.

While Wesley (£6.0m) is likely to be the first-choice centre-forward this season, we should keep an eye on Scott Hogan and Keinan Davis (£4.5m).

Hogan’s future has been up in the air for some time after going out on loan last season but he has now been involved in both pre-season games, scoring against Shrewsbury.

Davis also started up-front at the New Meadow, who is down as a £4.5m midfielder on FPL, so he warrants monitoring too, although Jonathan Kodjia (£5.5m) may be back soon following his African Cup of Nations campaign with the Ivory Coast.

First-half Aston Villa XI (4-2-3-1): Steer; N Taylor, Mings, Konsa, Guilbert; Grealish, Bjarnason; Green, McGinn, Jota; Davis.

Second-half Aston Villa XI (4-2-3-1): Steer; Targett, Hause, Chester, Bree; O’Hare, Lansbury, Hourihane, Hepburn-Murphy; Hogan, Wesley.

Hi all. Been messing with my team constantly. Think this finally looks quite good. What are your thoughts? Too City Sparse? Much appreciated.
    Fabs (Button)
    Alonso, Robbo, Laporte, Digne (Gibson)
Salah(c) Fraser, Tielemans, Siggy, Eriksen (v)
    Wilson (Mousset, Greenwood)

Way too much money in defence IMO. I also don't think it's a good idea to be spending 15.5 on two Bournemouth players.

It's a nice team don't get me wrong but just my two cents.

Like the Alonso and Eriksen picks. But Alonso is clearly inferior to TAA. I would downgrade someone, maybe Fabs or Laporte to do it. Or just have TAA instead of one of the mids if you think Alonso can do better than the mids.

Thanks for responding. I think I'd play this formation most weeks. I can swap out Siggy / Eriksen if dont perform/transferred. Mousset punty, their record signing, nailed right ? & couldn't afford Sharp. Greenwood breakthrough season? Time will tell.

Lampard was talking him up after their game v Barca saying he's been great on their tour, announced himself to the squad etc. He's also a central attacking midfielder while all the competition (Willian, Pedro and Pulisic) are wide players so Mount could be nailed depending on formation.

One more time for the DZ crew:

    A) Siggy, Brooks, Wilson, Deulofeu
    B) Fraser, Ayoze, Wilson, Deulofeu + 0.5 to upgrade Zinchenko to Walker
    C) Maddison, Brooks, Vardy, King

Me neither, but I'd like to avoid tripling up on Bournemouth attack with City on the horizon. Obviously Jota is an alternative, but I'm put off by Europa league at the start.

Other options beside Deulofeu and Jota but risky betting on potential. Deulofeu too inconsistent for me but camsh in if you get him on a hot streak.

I like the looks of a no-premium team.

Can go 3-5-2 or 3-4-3 every weekend + a non-uber on the bench means early season XI omissions will be covered with grace.

Would need a WC to chase a premium player, but setting up this way suits my low-maintenance/hands-off preference for the past few seasons anyway.

What do you think? I'd say I've spread the risk over 12 starters, rather than 11.

    Fabianski (Button/4m)
    Digne - TAA - Robertson - (4.5m - 4m)
    Fraser - Martial - Pogba - Sigurdsson - Tielemans
    Wilson - Vardy (Jiminez)

Pretty good breakdown. If you have Vardy it's slightly different. Also you need spurs cover
Not sure I am going with 2 x Liverpool defenders either
Once Frank settles on a first 11 a Chelsea player might also be a must...

Ha ha, if people were awake, they'd slay you for this, but I've got a very similarly unbalanced draft myself.

Let's look at the options you lay out practically:
Who will score the most points -
      Azpilicueta or Walker 6.0m def
      Brooks or Perez 6.5m mid
      Jota or Deulofeu 6.5m fwd

First of all, I think Donks is a bargain 4.5 benchie so might as well keep him.
Kelly's a waste of space so it's whether you will get more points with a premium 5th defender, or modest 2nd striker.
If we narrow it down to between Walker or Jota, I'd lean towards the City player.

It's pretty much a coin flip. My personal feeling is that TAA is young, progressed through last season and is on a trajectory to score even more points this year. On the other hand, Klopp has cover should he want to rest TAA now and again, but there's really no one to give Robbo a rest, apart from an aged Milner.

3000 minutes the season before, scoring 4 goals

Only 5.5 also.... but Pep seemed to go very cold on him last year

Yes, and there were reports that Pep was happy to sell him quick and cheap to fund Maguire. Harry prolly won't happen, but the news suggests to me Stones has clear priority for the 2nd CB spot.

9 CS in 13 starts - extrapolated to any type of regular starting scenario that turns into quite an FPL tally

Unless I'm mistaken, no one is saying he's the best centre back in the world, or even at city, or even that he IS going to start

The point is that he's being monitored

    Would appreciate some advice/commenrs.

    Ryan (Button)

    TAA VVD Digne Dunk (Kelly)

Salah KDB Siggy Zaha (de donk)

    King Kane (Greenwood)

Basically hoping Kane + KDB will better Stering + Vardy. Currently considering ditching Zaha for another premium defender. (Or give him first 2 weeks and swap for city def??) Pls let me know what ya guys think!

I'd not given him a thought until yesterday when I read the Out of the Blocks article here. Says he tends to make a blistering start before fading away. Could be useful then.

Yarmolenko, Ward-Prowse other options at 6.0 to change to, there will probably emerge a 5.0-5.5 option in midfield from somewhere.

Cant see anything wrong to be honest, I have similar team structure.

Bernardo not being a strong FPL asset and Zaha's future is the only concern

Yeah, I’m aware Bilva isn’t the Citizen of choice, but hoping he ties down that RW berth and makes it his own.
Also had Zaha early doors in the hope he’d be an Arsenal player by now!
Issue is, to switch Bilva>KDB means taking Zaha>£5.5m and I don’t fancy anything there.

        Suggestions?

    Conceptually I love a gameweek one bench boost for 4 reasons;

    1) Going against the herd is way more interesting.
    2) Getting off to a good start is very helpful in fpl.
    3) It's the only gameweek you can use 2 chips in, free hit and bench boost.
    4) wildcard comfortably the best chip so saving it for the late season double gameweek period just to bench boost is not maximising its potential.

    Done it the last 3 seasons and got a 5k gameweek rank last year. However can't find a bench boost team I like this season and here's why;

    1) All the most expensive attacking assets have a good fixture so a healthy mix of them inevitably affects the quality of the bench.
    2) If I were free hitting the team I'd want is actually very similar to my current draft anyway, this seriously dents the bench boost appeal as my subs, like the vast majority of us, are ropey at best
    3) There are no good dirt cheap options, last season we had the 4.0m AWB who started with a bang at Fulham. Maybe Mason Greenwood will start but that's a bit punty even for me. All the other cheapest players either don't start or don't have a good fixture or don't have much potential or a combination of all 3 of those.
    4) The compromises needed to afford 15 good players are just too much this season. A blend of KDB, Moura, King and Lacazette over a mix of Sterling, Kane, Wilson and Aubameyang just doesn't do it for me.

Best of luck to those mavericks going for it and I'd love to see the teams you've put together but sadly I'm out.

    1. Pukki Party
      • 6 Years
      4 years, 9 months ago

      3) it's not a free hit, it's the first wildcard basically.

      1. Rhinos
        • 10 Years
        4 years, 9 months ago

it effectively IS a free hit coz this strategy resigns you to a very early wildcard, especially this season as a decent bench boost requires spending more money on your bench than you'd like. Also how dull would you have to be to not pick 15 players with good fixtures, so the same principle as a free hit
