Raheem Sterling (£12.0m) could line up as a centre-forward for Manchester in Gameweek 1 and in the early matches of 2019/20.

With Sergio Aguero (£12.0m) and Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m) unlikely to be back in pre-season in time to fully prepare for the campaign ahead, the England international has now spearheaded Pep Guardiola’s attack in three friendlies.

Sterling operating in such an advanced role has caused plenty of excitement in the Fantasy community, altering the nature of comparisons between him and Kevin de Bruyne (£9.5m).

This article serves as a double-up on this interesting new development, covering Manchester City’s latest match as a Scout Notes, whilst also using Members data to assess Sterling’s capabilities as a centre-forward.

Kitchee FC 1-6 Manchester City

Sterling in action for Manchster City against Kitchee

Goals: David Silva (£7.5m), Leroy Sané x2 (£9.5m), Raheem Sterling (£12.0m), Nabil Touaizi, José Ángel Pozo

Assists: Sterling x2, Ilkay Gündogan (£5.5m), Kevin de Bruyne (£9.5m), Adria Bernabe

Sterling was at the very heart of Manchester City’s attacking threat as they thrashed Hong Kong outfit Kitchee SC on Wednesday.

The central role allowed him to play a pivotal part in the intricate pass and move play, so it is no surprise that Sterling came away from the latest pre-season friendly with three attacking returns.

He hit the bar with a first-time effort early on, set-up David Silva (£7.5m) for the opener, fired a beautiful effort into the top corner for 3-0 and it was his saved shot that allowed Leroy Sané (£9.5m) to get on the score sheet too.

However, it is hard to read too much into this result given the gulf in class between Manchester City and Kitchee SC.

It would be easy to argue that the 0-0 draw with Wolves last week would be of a better use for assessing Sterling’s centre-forward capabilities.

In that match, Manchester City were quite sluggish and spurned plenty of chances.

Sterling himself started that match brightly but, after missing a penalty, was less involved.

That said, he also led the line for 45 minutes against West Ham three days before that and scored twice, so his time up-front is producing somewhat mixed results so far.

It’s early days in pre-season, of course, and there is plenty of time for Sterling to impress in the centre-forward position against better opposition.

Thankfully, we have the Community Shield coming up to act as a true test of what Sterling is capable of in a different role.

That pits Manchester City against Premier League runners-up Liverpool in a match that both Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp will be desperate to win – which should see the strongest possible line-ups deployed.

What does the data say about Sterling as a centre-forward?

Sané scored twice for Manchester City in their big win over Kitchee

Sterling’s central role during pre-season is proving to be good news for Sané and Bernardo Silva as increased competition on the attacking flanks shores up their place in the team.

As things stand, only Sterling has been involved in more goals this summer than Sané, despite speculation that he might leave the club.

De Bruyne continues to be involved in the goals too, registering an assist for Sané’s second against Kitchee.

While there had been talk of Sterling’s move into the middle, media reports surfaced this week that the Belgian has been asked to play a deeper midfield role.

De Bruyne did not look especially reserved or conservative in his play against the Hong Kong side, continuing to demonstrate his creative credentials.

However, as already mentioned, it is hard to know how much to read into this result. It is possible that the low quality of opposition was what pardoned de Bruyne from having to drop deep.

Again, this is something to look out for in the Community Shield final next month.

The only other Fantasy talking point concerns the defence as managers hope to work out who Pep Guardiola’s preferred full-backs are.

Kyle Walker (£6.0m) remains relatively nailed-on for the right-back berth, but the other flank is still very much in the air.

After three pre-season matches, Angeliño (£5.0m) has started at left-back twice but is currently ahead of Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.5m) on minutes by 136 to 134 – so it is still very much up in the air.

Manchester City XI (4-3-3): Bravo; Angeliño (Zinchenko 46′), Laporte (Dionkou 64′), Stones (Harwood-Bellis 72′), Walker (Danilo 64′); de Bruyne (Doyle 64′), D Silva (Rodri 46′), Gündogan (Foden 72′); Sané (Pozo 72′), Sterling (Touaizi 72′), B Silva (Bernabe 64′).

"Does one of the best attacking player's in the league appeal increase when even though he's still classed as a midfielder, there's a good chance he'll play in more advanced roles."

Yes, yes it does. Obviously. Seeing as midfielders get more points per goal scored and you're just more likely to score

Doesn't work like that. Some players are more likely to score coming in from deeper and making runs into the box rather than always being in the box anyway.

Right. I'm getting Son in GW3. I figured with Kev being 9.5, the same price, he could hold the place for 2 GWs. But Sane is also 9.5 so he's bloody perfect to hold the fort for Son. He's in.

          Cue Mahrez.

But Sane did get TCed last season for a reason. Having been a minority Sterling owner for most of last season I find it curious that he’s now so necessary even with the price hike. Didn’t feel it would turn out this way half way through last season at all.

This Zinchenko v Angelino battle is interesting! I've had Zinchenko pencilled in for a while now needing a cheap way into MC defence. Having had a look now at Angelino in video...I'm very impressed and think he may get the nod 0.5 cheaper too! Have a look at this.

I’m not so sure. When Pep spoke about his new signings Rodri and Angeliño he said that Rodri will be fine as he has the experience but he Angeliño “will improve” when he understands how good he is and how good the team is.

Really West Ham and Spurs first 2 games. Sterling is the only one I would have in my team, maybe KDB if he’s starting the first 2. Everyone else is a rotation risk and the first 2 games I can see potential for blanks and goals conceded.

    Taa Vvd Digne Zinchenko DUNK
    Salah Sterling PEREZ (Dendoncker, Hayden)
    KANE KING (Greenwood)

    2)
    Pope (McGovern)
    Taa Vvd Digne Zinchenko AWB
    Salah Sterling FRASER (Dendoncker, Hayden)

Currently got Jorginho but concerned about his security of starts in Lampard's two-man midfield, reckon he'll be rotated with Kovacic. If I could find the extra 0.5m I'd probably look elsewhere than Moutinho, Trezeguet looks a potentially interesting option

With Newcastle's early fixtures I reckon they could get marooned early on and fall apart. Think Sheffield United could be alright. Villa's signings look a bit smarter than Fulham's so I'm starting to back them more. I'll have to go with Newcastle, Norwich and Burnley as my final three atm.

Surprised to not hear Burnley mentioned yet. They were poor for the majority of last season and pretty much stayed up thanks to wins against sides who are now in the Championship. Aware Europa was a factor in their bad start however.

I mean...I'm not going to start him, but are there any other 5.0 forwards that are actually likely to play every match?

    Pope/Ryan rotation
    TAA, VVD, Laporte, Coleman, Cathcart
    Salah, Sterling, Fraser
    King, Vardy

When Cathcart has a City away fixture, one of Hayden/Dendoncker gets in for 2-3 points.

I quite like this team, with Salah, Sterling / TAA, VVD, Laporte. Cons are Cathcart and King, but one can't have it all.

    What do you think/suggest?

Decided on 3 up top after Wild Rover primarily put me off Greenwood.

    4.5 4.5
    7.0 6.5 5.5 4.5 4
    12.5 12.0 7.0 7.0 4.5
    8.0 6.5 6.0

Does this seem inflexible if a big hitting forward starts to become "essential"?
Is the 7m price point for a mid tricky to negotiate?

Too much is made about flexibility in my opinion.

No I don't think 7m is a tricky price point at all for midfielders. Plenty to choose from.

What if he isn't a certain starter though? Downgrade the Everton chaps to Coleman or another 5.5 and say Fraser, would bump you up to a 5.5 at least McGinn or someone.

Hey guys, played around a bit with the template and this is what I came up with

    Ryan Button
    Robertson TAA Zinchenko Dunk Lundstram
    Salah Sterling Siggy Perez Dendoncker
    Vardy King Greenwood

Any better option than Lundstram at 4.0? Could also downgrade one of Robertson or TAA to VVD and upgrade the defence.

    Thanks!

Think he could be a great option. Very good finisher and has been played through the middle in our two most recent preseason games. Only possible trouble is rotation/the fact that he usually got subbed early if things were going badly last season.

Anyone a fan of Angelino? Mendy is injured for a month so the only competition is Zinchenko. However, due to his versatility he could be put on the bench and brought on wherever he's needed. When City played what looked like a full strength team in their most recent preseason game, he started. Was decent too apparently despite having a rough start to preseason.

Posted it in the wrong place earlier.

From what oles said and from preseason if expect uniteds midfield 2 to be McTominay and pogba which leaves the number 10 position up for grabs unless they sign someone. He also said they’d play in a pivot and I think that means when 1 goes forward the other sits and vice versa which could make McTominay a bargain option. Rashford and martial have a pretty good chance of being rotated between the striker position by what ole said as well although the other may still be played just on the wing
