Patience key with Trezeguet as Villa squad size increases

Fantasy Premier League managers may have to wait to see how Trezeguet (£5.5m) settles in at Aston Villa before assessing his points-scoring potential.

Dean Smith continued his summer spending spree earlier this week by adding Egypt international to his roster, the ninth new signing of the transfer window.

His name alone may evoke nostalgia among football fans of the late 90s and early 00s but, unlike his retro namesake, this Trezeguet isn’t a striker and is yet to play even a minute’s worth of football in any of Europe’s major leagues.

Coming into FPL priced at £5.5m the Egyptian’s viability will depend on several factors.

Indicators of his abilities can no doubt be found by researching his time at previous clubs but can he cut it in the Premier League, let alone start at Aston Villa? And what effect will he have on Smith’s array of attacking options?

The history

and statistics

Trezeguet in action for Egypt at this summer’s African Cup of Nations

Trezeguet came through the youth ranks of Al Ahly in Egypt, one of the most successful football outfits in African football. Even at a young age, the former head coach of the club said that Trezeguet was “one of the best youngster’s he’s ever come across”.

Within a matter of a few years of turning professional, he had already won the Egyptian Premier League and CAF Champions League. His talent hadn’t gone unnoticed and was attracting attention from European scouts.

Trezeguet was not especially known for with his goal-scoring exploits during this period though, having netted only seven times. But clearly he was contributing in other areas of attacking play so it wasn’t long before Anderlecht came calling.

However, Trezeguet’s loan spell in Belgium was nothing but disappointing. Even when he signed permanently for Anderlecht he spent most of his time being loaned out to other clubs.

There were still benefits for the Egyptian in this as he was attaining crucial minutes on the pitch and was able to adapt his game in a different continent.

It wasn’t until the 2017/18 season, when loaned out to Turkish side Kasımpaşa, that Trezeguet started to make a name for himself again. Switching between the left and right flanks, this was his most successful campaign from an attacking perspective when he scored 13 goals and registered 7 assists in only 31 appearances.

Trezeguet was then signed permanently by Kasımpaşa and scored an additional nine goals for them in the following season. To put this into context he scored 20% of their league goals over the space of two seasons.

It’s this kind of form that FPL managers and Villans alike will be hoping that he can leverage in the Premier League. And if Dean Smith’s words are anything to go by, Trezeguet hasn’t just been signed to make up the numbers either.

“He’s the type of wide player that we have been looking for” – Dean Smith

Comparisons

Trezeguet did well in the Turkish top-flight last season

We must not forget that, on top of Trezeguet, Aston Villa have already signed two other wingers in the transfer window; Jota (£6.0m) from Birmingham and Anwar El Ghazi whose previous loan deal was made permanent.

Also at the club, and getting time in pre-season is Andre Green (£5.0m), while Jack Grealish (£6.0m), Jonathan Kodjia (£5.5m) and Birkir Bjarnason (£4.5m) are all capable of playing on the wing if needed.

This could potentially complicate things for Trezeguet, Jota and El Ghazi in particular as at least one of them will have to miss out each match if Smith continues using a 4-3-3 formation.

There is plenty to be encouraged about in Trezeguet’s underlying statistics though.

Last he averaged four shots per league game, dwarfing dwarfs the output from El Ghazi (1.9) and Jota (1.6). The fact that the Egyptian scored the same number of goals last season (nine) as the two of them combined, he could represent a strong prospect on his own.

Having said that, it is hard to compare the Turkish Super Lig with the Championship with the second tier of English football improving in quality and global appeal every year.

Either way, neither division stacks up to the Premier League so we should at least suspect there to be some reduction in Trezeguet’s shots per game this year compared to 2018/19.

If there’s one key attribute that Trezeguet displays, it is his adaptability. The fact he was has been able to adjust between three leagues over four years (2014-2018) shows that he can cope with change.

18 attacking returns last season (one for every 170 minutes played) by a winger in any league should not be scoffed at.

Even if Trezeguet was able to match half of that in the Premier League, with an FPL price tag of £5.5m, it would be considered a decent enough debut season, especially if it was enough to help keep Villa up.

It must be noted that over a quarter of Aston Villa’s goals last season were scored between Grealish, John McGinn (£5.5m) and Conor Hourihane (£5.5m) respectively, all three of whom predominantly operate in the central midfield trio of Smith’s 4-3-3 formation.

From an FPL perspective, there is a slight danger that Aston Villa now have too many players who are capable of chipping in with goals from across midfield and attack.

This could make it hard to pin down one individual who is involved in more goals than any of his team-mates, a talisman they can count on for attacking prowess in the mould of a Jamie Vardy (£9.0m) or a Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m).

Furthermore, Aston Villa also recently signed a new forward in Wesley (£6.0m), to replace the departed Tammy Abraham (£7.0m) and it is currently unclear how long it will take him to settle into the side too.

The Prospects

Trezeguet is unlikely to have the same impact on the Premier League as his Egypt team-mate Salah

It’s hard to recall the last time a player lit up the Turkish Super Lig and then made an immediate like-for-like impact on the Premier League the following season.

This on its own doesn’t bode well for Trezeguet, so it’s hard to consider him some kind of budget version of international colleague Mohamed Salah (£12.5m).

After all, the Liverpool man had previously played in the Premier League before arriving at Anfield having excelled in Serie A and the Champions League.

Trezeguet lacks this kind of valuable experience and may have to hit the ground running from Gameweek 1 or else risk being rested or rotated.

The £5.5m price does still make him a very interesting prospect for Fantasy managers.

In 2019/20, there are not many FPL assets at that price point who matched or bettered Trezeguet’s 18 attacking returns last season, even if they were recorded in a so-called ‘lesser league’.

At the same time, Trezeguet’s potential attacking influence is equally at risk of being cancelled out by Aston Villa’s other midfielders and forwards, while rotation between himself, Jota and El Ghazi.

The general FPL rule of thumb is to err on the side of caution and avoid players from newly promoted teams when selecting your best XI. This can probably also apply to Trezeguet as he comes into the team as a new face.

But if push came to shove, there is sufficient evidence to suggests that he could cause a surprise or two as a differential pick.

It does seem as if Trezeguet’s presence could boost Aston Villa’s attacking credentials, the question remains whether he can perform consistently and for that, we need to see him play a few weeks of Premier League football first.

      It's a tough one.
Jota's form is better and he's more nailed but Deulofeu has the fixtures and Watford tend to start the season well.

Going to monitor both and Deeney pre season then make a decision.

It's tricky because jota is easily better imo but I just don't know how the Europa factor will work. On the one hand he's already firing in competitive games pre gw1, wolves are literally the only players with any form to gauge and he's looking good by all accounts. On the other hand he's playing Thursdays now and his minutes were managed at the best of times so that can only get worse. Deu more secure for minutes, some tasty fixtures, thriving in that forward role as a big fish at Watford. Just needs to step up his consistency which I think he can and will.

Yeah, it could be a bit misleading how they're doing, and how he is doing specifically. I think Wolves are a better team than Burnley ever were, but having said that we all saw what the Europa League did to Burnley and their thin squad. Wolves might actually struggle more than we think. Particularly with those hard fixtures to start with.

There's so much noise and stats flying around and it is so hard to pick your gameweek 1 team. The solution? KISS - Keep it simple stupid!

Here are the teams with the best fixtures in the opening 6 gameweeks and the players in those teams with the highest FPL goal involvement (i.e. if that team scores, who is most likely to be involved in the goal or the assist).

I'm seriously considering Yarmolenko now, even though he only started 5 games last season (small sample size). Hope this helps everyone! 🙂

    1) Everton - Richarlison (42), DCL (38), Siggy (37).

    2) Bournemouth - Wilson (54), Stanislas (42), Fraser (40), Brooks (32), King (31).

    3) Man City - Aguero (44), Sterling (43), Sane (41).

    4) Brighton - Murray (52), Andone (43), Gros (33), March (27).

    5) Liverpool - Salah (41), Mane (32), Firmino (31).

    6) West Ham - Yarmolenko (60!), Antonio (48), Anderson (31), Noble (25), Lanzini (23).

    7) Crystal Palace - Zaha (44), Bats* (33), Schlupp (30), Milli (28).

Richarlison has a FPL goal involvement of 42% last season.

So if Everton score there is a 42% chance Richarlison is involved and scores or assists.

So this is saying that for every goal scored last season for Everton, there was a 42% chance that Richarlison (assuming he was on the pitch at the time?) was either the assister or goal scorer?

Not at all. Goal involvement can be a misleading stat unless a player has started a lot of games.

If Jonty had started twice for Brighton and score 1 goal, his goal involvement would be 50% for instance.

It measures how often he scores or assists when he is on the pitch.

When on the pitch, DCL scored or assisted in 38% of the goals and assists that Everton got as a team.

Totally agree with the KISS philosophy - helps one steer as far away as possible from the dreaded TTBTC syndrome!! Also Nice to see Sterling & Salah both front & centre on that list

However I do think Leicester’s fixture difficulty is being overstated (possibly dramatically so) and expect both Vardy & Perez to be up in lights along with Mo & Raz

Since puel was sacked, They’ve scored 19 goals in 11 games, with Vardy getting 10 goals & 1 assist in those 11 games

He also scored against wolves, United and Bournemouth last season, 3 of his first 5 opponents... wolves may have one eye on Europa which stretches them even further....

Of their other opposition in that first 5 - Sheff utd are newly promoted, and Chelsea have the football management experience equivalent of a toddler in charge...

For me they won’t fear those fixtures one bit

I agree. I think Vardy is a premium player priced at £9m. Only 4 players scored more than him last season and they all cost between £11m to £12.5m.

Throw in Rodgers recent quotes where he basically said they’re going all out attack this year plus the fact that he’s a notoriously attacking manager

It looks A match made in heaven

We just need to pray for fitness for Vardy - no injuries please

This is excellent stuff, thanks! You're right that essentially fpl can be mastered by projecting 3 factors: total team goals for/against (modelled across to fixture difficulty + clean sheets, more on this later), fpl goal involvement (broken down by g/a/fa) and time played (appearances/mins).

Essentially projected attacking returns = fpl goal involvement % X team goal match average X fixture difficulty weighting X % minutes played.

That's a simplified way that rmt and I assume every other predictive model work, so fpl goal involvement is THE most important player stat arguably. It can be modelled in lots of ways but the by minute played in the members area is gold (which I hadn't noticed until you pointed out!) as factors easier/harder fixtures and even the fact more goals are scored later in matches implicitly.

On Fixture difficulty, you might remember my article a few weeks ago. I did more analysis from 3 seasons of data and feel have got very robust figures in that for attacking returns it just reverts to the mean of opposition goals conceded, and doesn't change based on whether you're liverpool or Sheffield United on average (unlike clean sheets where they are more variable for worse teams). So to calculate % of what a team would expect to return against a particularly team vs their norm for the season = opposition total goals conceded over 38 games (projected) / average total team goals conceded over 38 games (usually about 53) with a 57.25:32.75 home: away factor applied. Hopefully that makes sense! So it's surprisingly easy to set up a spreadsheet of expected team attacking returns for every fixture if you plot overall team goals for and against which you can then apply whatever your tweaked player goal involvement stats are to. Then can do cumulative / average figures for first 6 fixtures etc.

The final factor is minutes which I think is where the goal involvement sometimes deceives in promoting those playing shorter parts of games (eg aguero/martial/dcl) when they might score proportionally lots but if you're playing less minutes.

Final comment is how high arnie is up there 2 seasons running, good omen for haller who also had high goal involvement in Germany.

A bit late to the party here, but great post, FPL Virg and great discussion. Helps me on some tougher calls that might be easier now (Wilson vs. King) and reinforcing some of my more expensive picks. Murray also an interesting shout... but with the new manager and his age will he manage as many starts? Joe/Brighton fans should enlighten us!

I think West Ham will put up strong attacking numbers but still not sure where the points will come from now that we have so many attacking MF options (I'm a Hammers fan). Yarmo could be gold, but Lanzini could also be overlooked now that he's fully back from injury, plus what you've shown from Antonio... and now the new aquisition in Fornals. Plus Haller who looks to be great up front. And who knows if Jack Wilshire will stay healthy. All that said, I'm excited for WHUFC and all the places goals and assists can come from, but am looking more at them for early wildcard or transfers in once we know a little more.

Thanks again for this - I'm going to look at it for the rest of my potential starting XI including attackers from a few other teams (Foxes, ManU, Spurs) even though their fixtures aren't as strong.

I've been tinkering with the idea of playing a 4-5-1 set up. Thus doesn't give me much in the way of bench cover, but the first 11 are all pretty much nailed on starters, barring injury. Thoughts?

    Pope
    TAA | Robertson | Digne | Laporte
    Salah | KDB | Fraser | Perez | Sigurdsson
    Wilson

Good I think. I would be tempted to downgrade one of Wilson or Siggy to another 6.5 and improve your bench to be honest.

          I am I am. I bet I'm older than you! 😉

          Let's compare notes:

Foster/4m (easy opening fix; can't afford more yet)
Robbo/TAA/VVD Zinchenko, Zouma (needs monitoring, obvs)
Sterling, Sane [>Son GW3], Zaha [if at Everton], Ceballos, Donkers
          Wilson [short term], Jimenez, DCL

Front line might need ripping up upon news of Wolves signing a striker!

Think I'd prefer KWB slightly over Sane but he could prove a shrewd pick! Zaha or Wolves striker not for me, would prefer WIlson King double up for first two games. Ceballos might not be involved as much as we hope but if he is could be golden option!

Sane's in due to this Sterling starting up top gig. City playing right now and Kev is sat deeper - still got an assist, mind. If it were a longterm thing I'd have Kev no question, but over the first 2 weeks, I'm punting on Sane to score.
Got a feeling about Ceballos, but nothing more. 5.5 sat on my bench is no hardship.

You too, Mr Bantsy Pants. I'm not sure yet. I went three Pool defenders in my first draft, then Salah made it into my second since I liked Coleman, Digne and Zinchenko at the back.

If I remove the Everton defence, I'd prioritise another Pool defender over Salah, I think.

But 12.5 for a happy Salah is a much better deal than the 13.0 for an unhappy Salah last season.

Are you married to Salahlessness, yourself?

I'm 60/40 on it. I think its just more fun to go without him and think/hope that those three defenders will pick up where they took off from last season. In saying that if Salah scores a hattie v Norwich it would really make me think about fitting him in asap! So I'm hoping for single digits from Salah v Norwich big time haha

I tell you a secret - it involves a mistress. Shhh.
I have 2 drafts - one with/one without. I tweak 'em both and decide last minute which one to go with.
To be honest, every single time, the Salahless mistress excites me more, but fear of my Salah missus finding out terrifies me.

Like this very much.. I have a similar non salah draft with Kane instead of KDB, gives me two captaincy options in Raz and Kane..3x city and 3x Pool

      Ederson
      Taa VVD Robbo Coleman Zinch
      Sterling Siggy Fraser Tielamans/Perez
      Kane

Imo Zinch could be gold this season largely because Mendy is more in Pep's bad books even after he recovers from injury.. Awb is a wait and see for me, although I'd gladly double up on City def than Utd or spurs to start with

I'm having a hard time choosing between Perez & Tielemans.

I think it will come down to Leicester's main formation. Should they play a 4231 with Tielemans at the base, Perez would be the more appealing option because he will either play behind Vardy (with Maddison on the left), or play on the right (with Maddison keeping the #10 position)

However, I think Tielemans gains the advantage should Leicester end up playing a 433 with Tielemans one of the 2 central mids on either side of Ndidi.

It's a coin flip at this point.

Breaking news from Italy. Patrick Cutrone (AC Milan, ST) virtually done at Wolves for kind of 23m euros. He's a young, talented, hungry, Inzaghi-like centerforward. Intelligent move, considering how prolific may Cutrone be in EL games and the lack of replacements for Raul Jimenez.

Don't think so. Jimenez AND Cutrone are not a couple up front. Last year they had Higuain and Cutrone, and almost never fielded them together (played 4-3-3 instead, with Cahlanoglu left flank and Suso on the right). So I guess he'll be a replacement for Jimi.
