Cashing in chips in Gameweek 1

There’s less than three weeks to go before the start of the new fantasy football season.  FPL fever has taken over (replacing transfer window fever in June, which replaced FPL withdrawal in May).  It’s hard to be believe we’re right back into the swing of things already.

I’ve started spending more time tinkering with my team as the pre-season friendly matches progress, but there’s still a lot that can change before we lock in our teams on August 9.  There are loads of informative articles, podcasts, videos and comment sections dedicated to discussing teams and players… Who’s got the kindest opening fixtures?  Which hotly anticipated new signings will start from the first week?  Which big hitters will begin the season on a hot streak?  Can Harry Kane score a goal in August?

This community article is about something different.  Something a bit “maverick” as our Scoutcast hosts like to say.  This is all about early season chip use… specifically, using chips in Gameweek 1.   What?  Seriously?  That’s crazy. Or is it?

You’d be mad to use a precious chip in Gameweek 1, right?  Why would you use a chip in the first week rather than save it for a strong finish or one of the special blank or double gameweeks in the second half of the season (when fixtures get mixed up and lineups need major changes)?  Well, perhaps you want to get out to an early lead in your mini-league or get a cracking overall rank right away to look good amongst your peers and fellow players.  But maybe there’s more to it.  Early success can give your team a boost and position you better to leave other managers in your wake.  And it should always be about maximizing the points with a given chip, so let’s see if using any of them in the first week could make sense.

TRIPLE CAPTAIN

There is a reasonable argument for using the Triple Captain chip on a known FPL star in Gameweek 1 if they have an attractive matchup.  It could be as good as any single-game option for triple captaincy later in the year.  And some of the top teams have great fixtures in the first gameweek – especially Liverpool, Spurs, and Manchester City.  Let’s look at each:

  • Liverpool – Mohamed Salah scored in the first gameweek last year and is up against an injury-depleted, newly-promoted side in Norwich City.  It might be the Reds’ best home fixture all season!  With Sadio Mane needing some rest after a full summer of playing in the Africa Cup of Nations, Salah could be clear choice to put two or three goals past the Canaries.  A Liverpool defender (Andrew Robertson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, or Virgil Van Dijk) could also be in line for a massive haul from clean sheet and attacking points. The question there is which defender will deliver the most.
  • Man City – Man City attackers could likewise run rampant over West Ham even though they play away (they scored four at the London Stadium in each of the last two seasons and four against the Hammers in their pre-season friendly in China last week).  Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero are the best potential triple captain options here and even though I’m a die-hard West Ham fan, I fear that Sterling in particular could shine as he has a better away scoring record than Aguero.
  • Spurs – And what about Harry Kane against a promoted Aston Villa side?  If you don’t buy into the mythology about Kane’s inability to score in August (he finally broke the curse last year with his first ever Premier League goal in August), then surely he looks like another triple captain option.  His last Premier League game against Villa was in 2016 when he scored a brace and was man of the match whilst wearing that Phantom of the Opera protective face mask.  And perhaps Spurs have something to prove after coming up just short in the Champions League final.
  • Leicester – Crazy like a fox to use your Triple Captain on Leicester?  The Foxes have boosted their attacking threat in the off-season and have a good game at home against Wolves.  It might just be too risky to use this chip on Jamie Vardy but who knows… Wolves only kept two clean sheets away from home last year and they’ll be tired from a flurry of games this summer in Asia and for Europa League qualifying.

BENCH BOOST

Again, like with the Triple Captain chip you could wait for a double gameweek.  But if you stick with proven FPL players and invest in a balanced lineup to start the season, you can be fairly certain of who’s starting and get a bench full of players that have clean sheet or possible attacking potential.  Many people also wildcard in the first five or six weeks, so you’re likely to replace these bench players in a few weeks anyway if you want to get on early bandwagons or shift to more expensive players.  You also won’t have to worry about injuries or suspensions hampering your bench if you play this chip right off the bat.

Playing the bench boost in the first week is like doing it the same week as your wildcard, which is something you can’t do during the season since you can’t use two chips in one week.  Also you never know exactly how the double gameweeks will pan out.  If I had bench boosted in Gameweek 1 last year, I would have added 25 points to my score (equal to my bench boost during the “massive” double gameweek 35 when I had a fully playing bench and three players with doubles).  I also would have started off the season in the Top 100 overall… with nowhere to go but down.

WILDCARD

You can’t wildcard right off the bat.  Save this chip for at least Gameweek 2 if you really hate your team… or more likely Gameweek 4-6 when many of us will pull the trigger early in the season after the first international break and a month of information about who’s playing well.

FREE HIT

Like with the wildcard, you can’t use this in the first week nor should you.  Save it for a major blank or double gameweek in the second half of the season.  That seems a safe play to get you the most value for this chip.

ALL-OUT ATTACK

Does anyone still remember this short-lived chip from two seasons ago?  Even if you do, you probably don’t miss it now that it’s gone.  It was the chip most likely to get you fewer points compared to not using it at all (and this season the defenders look like good value players you want to be starting).

CONCLUSION

Good luck with your final weeks of preparation for the new FPL year!  As you think about your lineup for the first gameweek and early season strategy, don’t ignore the Triple Captain or Bench Boost chips.  You could save them for later or you could get yourself out to a nice lead in August.  Personally, I’m thinking about playing my Triple Captain.  Comment below if you’re thinking about using an early chip in GW1…

Cheers for submitting this FP Elephant! 🙂

BB would have worked out superbly well for me last year if I had used it in GW 1, but I can never escape the allure of that DGW 😆

Definitely a viable strategy for managers a little less dull than me and I've already seen a couple who plan to use it - best of luck to all that do! Can't say I'd be surprised if Salah starts this season in the best possible way by tearing up Norwich, but with Liverpool likely getting a nice DGW in December, I think I might be put off the TC. Interesting to see if any go for it.

      Thank you, sir!

I'm definitely tempted by Salah at Norwich... could be the best SGW matchup for anyone all year (the FFS RMT tool even shows it to be the highest point total they predict based on the early data).

But I definitely hear you about the DGWs and if I knew Salah (or Kane or Sterling/Aguero) would start two good fixtures in one week that's always what we wait for... can you say more about potential Liverpool double and any other early thoughts on when double gameweeks might fall in the upcoming season?

I always look to the experts to predict when and how the DGWs and BGWs come about... all I know is it's usually when fixture congestion (and TV schedules) move matches around.

Liverpool's GW 18 game versus West Ham will be moved due to the club world cup, creating a double in either GW 30 or GW 29 apparently - so the blank is in December and the double in March time.

GW 37 will likely be the big double.
GW 31 will likely be the big blank.

I'd be worried there'd be a player or two who unexpectedly don't make the GW1 starting line up due to being unfit or insufficiently integrated into the team philosophy on the training ground.

Thanks... definitely a legit concern, so I'm only looking at more stable players/teams/managers and ideally those with a good pre-season if I were to play a chip.

Nice and interesting article. My view is

TC, like to keep this chip for later, could be any team with a juicy dgw.

BB, needs a change of team philosophy . Two playing goallies are needed. A bench that scores points, therefor more mid priced mids and strikers.
Playing defenders (hopefully with a cs) . That lot then needs to be corrected soon, since you don't want to have too much money on the bench. So might be only interested for people who wc very early.

    Sorry but not for me.

Thanks LFC466 - I too have remorse for not using the BB in GW1 last year (hindsight and all that).

I hear you on FH, but I think a single GW triple captain if you think it's going to be a stellar matchup is worth it. A lot of us wound up using TC on a SGW player last year because of using WC and BB on weeks when there would have been other doubles... I got somewhat lucky in putting the TC on Salah for his big game against Huddersfield. That's part of why I'm tempted by his home opener against Norwich.

Need to see how Salah is in training and the Community shield before I know if I'll use the TC, but part of why I wrote this article was to push my own thinking about things I don't normally do. Maybe I'll be a bit more maverick and a bit less dullard this season... 🙂

Good point about the early WC use. GW1 bench boost is better option for people that know they like a full bench of starting (budget) players and also like to WC after the first three or four gameweeks once they have some better info / eye test (and after international break).

And the double gameweeks are always the holy grail of when to use the BB and triple captain chips but sometimes they don't actually work out as well for me as I think 🙂

I would have been 1st in the world after GW 1 of the 2016/17 season had I hit the bench boost. Would have done it too if I knew Jordi Amat would start 🙁

Anyway, early bench boost is a viable strategy because of the reduced opportunity cost of effectively playing it, considering most people will probably end up using an early 2nd WC this year it is definitely reasonable.

Never use the TC of FH in a normal GW.

Give 'em a few weeks. Their early 'easy' games are all away and their home ties are horrible.

Super interesting analysis. Love to see more of these kind of articles on the site. Looking back through my last five years of FPL, I have always played my BB or triple captain chips during double game weeks and have usually done about 50% worse than if I had played it during a week of really good fixtures for the top teams. Novel and thought-provoking piece!

Thanks for this article, I've been thinking of TC salah against Norwich, but ppl I have mentioned it too, have told me I'm crazy, so its put me off, I'll have to start thinking about it again

It's definitely not crazy. Boring, maybe. Safer, possibly. Better points... maybe. Yes, people can point to Harry Kane or Alexis Sanchez's crazy TC returns a few years ago in double gameweeks, but you won't always get that. Keeping the TC chip for doubles seems obvious but I wanted to write about how there can be value in using it elsewhere.

The question is will there be an "ideal" DGW where a top player has two good fixtures. You could argue that Salah starting against home vs. Norwich is his best (on paper) single gameweek matchup all year, so TC is not crazy. But people love the doubles... myself included. I wanted to expand my own thinking a bit here since I've used the TC chip in the past on doubles that aren't always better than good single matchups!

Bb gw1 is viable non-mad strategy if you wildcard early IF the alternative option is bench boost somewhere in the middle of the season or a number of games left, on the basis that you can shave off maybe 2m off your squad which is worth 40 points / 38 * number of ganeweeks you're stuck with non optimal team format (or the +4s to correct it). So it's not about getting same points boost as dgw but if you can get say 8 less then absolutely viable. The counter argument this season is that gw37 seems like good bench boost option so wc gw36 can offer the same opportunity.

I did use BB the first GW a couple of seasons back.
Looked at the fixtures, looked at form, picked all the players for just those fixtures, and....pfffft
dismal Hammers went and pumped Arsenal 3-0 away - 5 points from my 3 arsenal; and from there it didn't get any better. Id have done better on a lucky dip auto select.
The lopsided format & selection forced my hand on wild carding quickly - not a problem I thought - cash in on all the bandwagons.
Again pffft, cashed in on all the one week wonders which took till Xmas to ship back out.

So ok its a sample of 1. But the dangers are there, GW1 seems very unpredictable, and forcing yourself into a WC so early requires you to be very disciplined in not loading up on bandwagons.

If you played your triple captain and the captain didn't play, would the vice captain get triple points?

Yes. So regardless of when you play the chip you want a good vice captain option.

From the official FPL website: "The triple points bonus will be passed to your vice-captain. If your vice-captain doesn't play either then the bonus is lost, the chip isn't returned."
