10 pro tips for FPL success

After a nightmare season were I finished outside the top 500,000, I was determined to redeem myself in the upcoming season. I wanted to learn how the very best FPL managers avoided bad seasons. So I spent the summer listening to the brilliant meet the manager videos on FFScout and I also re-listened to ubiquitous top tips for FPL success and various season review podcasts. Here are 10 important notes I jotted down when I was digesting all this FPL content.

1) Be aware of the ownership of highly captained players.

Some people say stick with your premium players and be patient – they are quality players and they will come good. Don’t chop and change them. But be weary – not having a highly owner player who tops the captain poll is dangerous.

2) When the game updates for a new gameweek, make a note of your initial transfer thoughts. Don’t overthink it!

Often your first impression of your team is a good one. As the week goes on, the firehose of FPL noise may cause you to forget what you had planned when your mind was fresh and unclouded.

3) Don’t spend transfers in defence.

Get the best defenders from the best teams from the outset and let them do their thing throughout the course of the season. There is a good chance they will get a clean sheet every other week, while trying to predict clean sheets for cheap defenders is tough – especially when you’re using precious transfers trying to hop from one to another.

4) Ask yourself FPL General’s 3 questions before making a transfer.

  • Is the player a rotation risk?
  • Is the player injury prone?
  • Has the player you’re selling been given enough time? Are they showing encouraging stats?

5) Break down the season into blocks of 6 games.

Within each block, divide the teams into those who have good, middling and bad fixtures.

6) Have a clear captaincy plan

Know well in advance who your captain will be for the next several gameweeks. If it is a 50/50 split with the captaincy, go for the home player. When playing away, the opposition team can do things like not water the pitch to make things difficult.

7) Use RMT tool to see when your team is weak in future gameweeks.

Do what Mark Sutherns does and use the RMT tool on FFScout to see how your team is projected to do in the next 6 gameweeks and get ahead of the curve with a bad gameweek. If you have 60 to 70 plus points for 5 gameweeks and let’s say 40 or fewer points for one gameweek, prepare a plan of action now for that low scoring gameweek in the future.

8) Remember Numb’s 4 Principles

One: Planning (avoid transfers just for the current gameweek), Two: Research (e.g. regional papers have great inside info about local teams, will a player keep his place next week? – look at player ratings), Three: Team Management (continuously improve your team) and Four: Risk Management (avoid bandwagons).

9) Minimise Transfers

Will you have to sell the player you are bringing in any time soon? Does the player you are transferring in have good fixtures to come? Avoid hits but use your free transfer aggressively.

10) Look at the most important stats.

There are hundreds of different stats you can look at. Don’t lose track of the most important ones, as identified by Adam Hopcroft: Shots in the box. Big chances total. Penalty area touches.

    Good stuff, thank you Virg.

Number 4 is one I especially try to follow - I'm prone to impulsive transfers that have me thinking too short term, meaning I end up with another player that gets rotated out of their teams starting lineup and another problem I have to deal with - a la Pedro.

Equally number 10 - spot on.

Avoiding emotional knee-jerk reactions and bandwagons is key tip for myself this season.

After W1 last season I signed Neves after he scored...

Can't count the number of times I transferred out Kane/Hazard when they blanked two weeks in a row only to then hit a purple patch. Have to think in 6 week blocks and have a plan.

Blocks of 6 is a good way to break down the season.

I'm dubious about the rule of avoiding injury-prone players. Why? If they get injured you transfer them out. Simples. I wouldn't avoid KdB's likely hauls because somewhere down the line I might need to replace him. Is it just me?

I agree for the big names; missing out on double digits of a medically well treated footballer would be to ridicule oneself, if you have not gotten them merely at the risk of their being injured. However, for someone like Ings, from whom I can only expect a few points, being forced to a transfer and risk a -4 feels like a shame. the cheaper the player and the less the expectations, the more I accept the rule.

So are people going Rico or Lundstram?
Is Rico only nailed for a few weeks? Might be better off sticking with Lundstram..

You really think he's got more than a few weeks in him? I can see folks smugly insisting what geniuses they are when Kelly, Rico and Lundstram all play in GW1 only for them never to see a pitch for the rest of the campaign.

Avoiding 4.0s and ensuring you have a playing 4.5 on your bench.
You say Wan-Bissaka, I say Peltier.
The real trap is the surprise 4.0 who plays GW1. Wild bandwagon ensues, he never plays again.

Rico cost £10.7m. That's a lot for Bournemouth to pay for a full back. Surely they have to play him sometime?

Irrelevant. He played a whopping 550 minutes last season. Clearly never impressed Howe. And preseason line ups tell You nothing has changed.

Good stuff. Very practical and sensible. Not sure I totally agree with 3 however. It’s usually the lowest priority, sure, but there are plenty of reasons to transfer defenders.

For me this year the name of the game is avoiding knee jerk bandwagons. Steady as she goes... nothing maverick, nothing stupid.

Rotation - great post. Thanks! I've enjoyed re-listening to some of the meet the manager podcasts in long car rides this summer.

AFSW - I hear you about knee jerk bandwagons, but an honest question for you or others... how are we defining "bandwagon" and the difference between a knee-jerk bandwagon (to be avoided if it's a one-week wonder) and a true bandwagon (one that is deserved and that manager should jump on, like AWB last year or years past when popular but less known players emerge)? Bandwagons can be good or bad, right? We all want to jump on the true bandwagons early... but maybe not so early if they turn out to be knee-jerk? How many good performances make for a justified bandwagon in your opinion?

It's a good point and the only real answer is that you can only know in retrospect. There are certain criteria you can consider - has he come in for a long-term injury or will he be rotated, is the team on a good run. Admittedly he who hesitates risks losing hauls and has to pay the price.

Very good article Virg. Beautifully written.

Agree with all the points , spot on with everything. I need to improve point #2 😀

One thing I would add is taking calculated risks. Taking Risk is a very important aspect of the game. Higher the risk, higher the reward.

Interesting point on calculated risks...there’s a fine line for what that actually means!

Fantastic tips. Last year was my best year in 12. I'd say patience & not over thinking were the key. Iade several poor captain decisions though...based on fixtures not form, and I'll learn from that.

Chips are Vital aswell. I lost around a 100point lead in the last 5 gameweeks because I used my chips badly & another guy used them perfectly. Literally game changing.

Excellent post mate !!! Totally appreciate
It's simple but no.3 is where m lurking at which I had never done before,I always try to rotate defenders based on their fixtures but stick with the premium defence from better clubs n won't spare transfer for them is the key one.thanks.

My mate tells me I should change my team name to the Knee Jerks

I am a bugger for it. I promise myself every season I wont do it, but always fail

But last year I did well, winning my works league and coming 3rd in another paid league (so £140 winnings off £20)

My problem last year was wasting the tokens. Need to plan these this coming season, double game weeks, or player in form (esp triple captain) (3 points I got for him last year, what a waste)

I know I've been away all summer, but this is a really good article and no comedy in sight. Hacked account? 🙂

Seriously though, these "basics" are easily forgotten after an iffy start and should be flashed up with the confirm transfers button. Thanks.

I’m experimenting with blocks of 5. That way you get either a home or away bias. All players essentially perform better at home.

Who knows - it might work!
