New Arsenal midfielder Dani Ceballos (£5.5m) has the potential to be an exciting budget asset in Fantasy Premier League this season.

The Spaniard has joined the ranks at the Emirates Stadium on loan from Real Madrid, arriving with domestic and international acclaim.

Since signing for Real Madrid at 17, he has 35 senior appearances as well as six caps with the Spanish international team.

The midfielder has taken the number eight shirt at the Emirates, vacated by Aaron Ramsey following his departure to Juventus, and Unai Emery will be hoping that this exciting, attacking prospect can replicate his promising form in the Premier League.

Ceballos is likely to feature in a centrally-orientated attacking position for the Gunners, combining with the squad’s frontline including Alexandre Lacazette (£9.5m), Pierre-Emerick Aubeyamang (£11.0m) and the club-record £72m signing Nicolas Pepe to provide incisive runs and potential assists for Arsenal’s attacking options.

Despite having huge boots to fill in taking Ramsey’s number eight shirt, if Ceballos can deliver on the hype that has surrounded his arrival at the Emirates then Fantasy managers could be looking at a real asset this season.

Head coach Unai Emery praised Ceballos’ attacking abilities upon signing:

“We’re excited to see Dani join us. He is a talented player with big technical ability, creativity and precision.”

Ceballos also spoke of his delight at having Emery’s backing:

“I knew I had the confidence of the coach, which was very important for me from the start. I was aware of the responsibility that wearing this shirt entails and it was a tremendously proud moment when I decided to join Arsenal”

The History and Statistics

Ceballos’ arrival in the Premier League with Arsenal marks a new chapter of considerable excitement in the 22-year-old’s career, yet the expectation and scrutiny he is likely to face this season will be unlike anything he has experienced before.

After rising through the youth ranks with Sevilla and Utrera in Spain, Ceballos moved to Real Betis in the concluding stages of his development as a youth prospect, arriving at the club in 2011 and making his senior debut just three years later.

The midfielder made a total of 98 appearances for Betis across three years at senior level, scoring seven goals alongside working his way into the Spanish set-up with the Under-19 and Under-21 squads.

This promising form from a young Spanish attacker attracted the interest of Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid under the management, who made their move and secured the signing of Ceballos on a six-year contract after agreeing a £16m fee with Betis.

Ceballos’ arrival at Madrid made Spanish national manager Luis Enrique sit up and take note, with a call-up to the senior side following as his ascent went one step further at just 20 years of age.

Ceballos in action for Real Madrid last season

In his most recent season in La Liga, Ceballos made 13 starts for Los Blancos as the club faltered to their worst domestic season for over 20 years.

For a club who are unquestionably in a stage of transition following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus, the Bernabéu does not currently represent an ideal destination for player development with a prospect such as Ceballos, with the instantaneous requirement for results meaning blooding youth prospects does not rank highly on the list of priorities.

Combining the situation at Madrid with Arsenal’s reported lack of financial flexibility means this loan makes perfect sense for all concerned – Madrid, Arsenal and Ceballos himself – especially considering the departure of Ramsey to Juventus.

If Ceballos is able to gain a consistent stream of minutes and, consequently some form, there is no reason that this 22-year-old prospect cannot establish himself in Arsenal’s starting XI.

Yet there will understandably be a sense of cautious optimism following the disappointing loan spell from another La Liga prospect, Denis Suárez, in the most recent 2018/19 campaign.

Comparisons

Minutes per shot Minutes per shot in the box Minutes per shot on target Minutes per key pass
Ceballos  47.3 111.4 157.8 46.2
Aubameyang 29.1 47.1 68.3 82.8
Lacazette 31 47.3 83.6 80.9
Mkhitaryan 33.6 65.8117.456.7
Pepe 28.2 49 54.6 47.6
Ramsey  40 72.8 106.7 51.6
Özil  158.4 193.6 290.3 38.7

The Prospects

Whilst Ceballos does not necessarily represent a marquee attacking signing for Arsenal, this is certainly a player with the potential to contribute to their attacking efforts in qualifying for the Champions League in 2019/20.

The Spaniard’s minutes per key pass (46.2) was beaten only by Mesut Özil (£7.5m) from the 2018/19 season, with his central attacking role for both Madrid and the Spanish national team helping him contribute assists and linkup play in the final third.

The disparity in Ceballos’ minutes per shot in the box and shot on target with Arsenal’s main attacking options (Aubameyang & Lacazette) suggest that Ceballos is a player less likely to score than to help his team-mates do so, although it is worth pointing out that he still shot considerably more often than Özil.

Given the friction between the German and Emery last season, it remains unclear whether the manager views the former World Cup winner as a central part of his plans for the upcoming season.

If this instability in Ozil and Emery’s working relationship is to continue, there would certainly be scope for a player such as Ceballos to play a central role for Arsenal in the upcoming Premier League season, but this will have to be a situation that is monitored by Fantasy managers in the opening Gameweeks of 2019/20.

A potentially influential factor in Ceballos’ playing time will be who Emery decides to play in the absence of Ramsey following his transfer to Juventus. The Welshman made just 14 league appearances in his final season at the club, but his departure combined with Ozil’s unquestionable inconsistency means there is a central attacking dilemma for Emery, and presently this dilemma remains unsolved.

Ceballos in action for Arsenal during pre-season

Whether a 22-year-old loanee is an answer to Arsenal’s midfield problems is something that will only become clear in the opening stages of the 2019/20 season, especially as he does have Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£7.0m) available to him.

Last season, the former Manchester United player recorded an inferior figure for minutes per chance created compared to Ceballos, but as you can see from the table above, he definitely offers more goal threat in and around the penalty box than the new loan signing.

However, with international experience and domestic exposure at one of Europe’s biggest clubs, Ceballos certainly has the ability, coupled with the potential opportunity to excel for the Gunners in the upcoming campaign.

Arsenal’s fixtures present a difficult decision for managers, with the selection of their assets hugely based in the short-term vs medium-term comparison. The Gunners face Newcastle (away) and Burnley (home) in their first two games – attractive attacking fixtures on paper – but then face Liverpool (away) and Tottenham (home) by the start of September.

There is certainly potential for Arsenal’s attacking options to score well against the likes of Newcastle and Burnley, but whether these same assets remain viable options for testing games against Liverpool and Spurs is hard to judge.

This difficult dilemma with regards to fixtures, combined with Ceballos remaining a relatively unknown quantity in relation to Emery’s preference for selection means justifying his inclusion from the outset is tricky for Fantasy managers.

Priced at £5.5m, if Ceballos was to be starting games for Emery alongside the Gunners hitting a strong patch of form, then the 22-year-old potentially represents a value-for-money option for Arsenal coverage.

Yet at this stage of pre-season without seeing Emery’s preferred starting XI in a league fixture, Ceballos’ inclusion as an attacking Arsenal asset would represent a high-risk gamble for managers.

The Spaniard could emerge as a strong differential when Arsenal’s fixtures improve from Gameweek 8, facing none of last season’s top-six until Gameweek 17, but for now, Ceballos is likely to feature on our radars rather than our drafts.

There's a massive red triangle next to his name.

I think if you click on that it'll give you some info on him.

Not too sure though, but I'd give it a go. Usually massive red triangular things are quite good at getting your attention, so I'd imagine there's a reason behind it.

      Good luck.

I can think of a few occasions at which I've seen larger, but as red triangles go, this is definitely in my top 15, if not top 10.

Im assuming red triangles are even bigger and kind of EVERYWHERE to you what with your field of view, so you're probably more aware of them.

The fact he was a midfielder last season.

Fear of rotation due to EL.

        He costs more.

Thinking Wolves will repeat their success of last season is a bit naive.

He had a good end to the season but that doesn't mean that form automaticall will carry through into this one.

He's a good player but probably overhyped due to being surrounded a lot of other attacking players who work the ball around well. (I know I've stated above I think they'll be less productive last season but you could argue his success was a lot to do with the players around him who may or may not be able to repeat their form this year).

Midfielder or forward, it's not important, what is important is his returns once Nuno moved to a 3-5-2. In the last 10 games, he returned 4 goals and 3 assists, hence his value has increased.

Fear of rotation is always there. King could miss a game if Howe wants to give Solanke a run out, Murray could miss a game if Potter wants to give Andone a run out etc. If I like a player, I won't let rotation, which may be based on nothing, dictate player selection.

Re Wolves repeating last seasons success, why not? They've recruited well with Cutrone and Vallejo, have a superb manager and the stats backed up everything good about them last season.

The last para I can't get on board with, I don't really understand what you mean, but Jota is one of the best players at Wolves, and playing alongside Moutinho, Neves, Jimenez etc can only be a good thing.

As you can probably tell, he's in my squad 🙂

Salah and Sterling will be top scorers again this season by at least smother 60 points. I think thatd Conservative to be honest and could actually be nearer 100.

Can't imagine any scenario in which I don't have both.

There's decent players at reasonable prices in defense and midfield. People on here getting bent out of shape having attackers who don't cost much.

If Jota was 7.5m more people on here would view him as a legit choice because it looks nicer and more important than 6.5m.

I think pricing has a lot to do with how people view assets rather than what they actually, objectively offer points-wise.

        Kane could score 30 goals

        1. JohnnyMagrinho
          7 years, 21 days ago

Sterling could score 30 and set up 15.

Salah could score 45 and set up 10.

Aubameyang could score 25 and set up 10.

KDB could score 15 and set up 15.

I fail to see your point.

A lot of premium players are priced that way because of their attacking potential.

You can't have them all. Having Salah, Sterling and Kane can be done but it's an imbalanced team.

The 4.5m difference between Kane and Deulo/King can be invested in other areas. Question is, how much is that 4.5m worth regarding points?

To simply say "Kane could score loads" isn't really giving any kind of insight. Wouldn't be surprised if Firmino outscored Kane this season.

Can't solely look at prices to determine a players quakity/

            Quality/effectiveness.

I do take your point though.

I've looked at all 3 in my team but it feels too weighted and it's just not for me.

You'd need to get every other picked bang on and you'd have a lot less flexibility.

Are you going for all 3? If so I'd be curious as to see your team. Not seen many with SSK.

Let's say Kane repeats his best ever fpl season (29G 7A)

          16/17: 224 points

          Sterling:

          17/18: 229 points
          18/19: 234 points

So Sterling has outscored Kane's best ever season (3 years ago) in the two recent seasons. Then again if you think they will score similar you should have Kane + 1M this year.

          1. JohnnyMagrinho
            7 years, 21 days ago

Sterling seems to be getting better and better and in a way he's Pep's legacy. He's taken this guy with stupid potential and turned him into an incredible player. I think he's just going to keep on improving. Surrounded by quality, all the time.

I don't think Kane will get much better. Spurs by far an inferior team and he' ll have all the pressure on him. He's quite good dealing with it but it's a huge factor to me and he has less outs around him.

Can't see Kane out scoring either of Salah or Sterling again but I could obviously be wrong, I just find it highly unlikely based on ability, potential, management staff and coaching, quality within their respective teams and style of play within the Prem.

    Best 5 million defender?
My bench is really weak so needs to be nailed.

KWP worries me with rotation after GW 1/2.
    Zouma the same as KWP.
Is Sokratis nailed on? Maitland-Niles (how long is Bellerin out for?)

I could use my transfer on this position and just carry the risk?

    Bench is currently - 4.5 forward / 4.5 forward / 4.0 defender = Greenwood / Wickham / Lundstram

Wolves fixtures to start are bad...
Don't want to trust a Bournemouth defender yet (they concede too much)
Holebas could be a good shout. First 4 GW look good! Does he play out of position or just an attacking full back?

I have now came up with this one dumped sigurdsson spread the funds on Trossard and Perez

    (0 itb)
    Ederson (button)

    VVD-Robertson-TAA-Coleman-(Azpileceuta)

    Fraser-Perez-Bsilva-(Trossard-Dendonker)

    Wilson-King-Kane

The logic is that Trossard/Perez/Azpilecueta can fit in around Bournemouth's difficult fixture gw3.
Will more than likely sell wilson at gw3
    - and can bench or sell one of the Liverpool trio,
Trossard/Perez could also become one of those chelsea mids who starts or one of the form aston villa mids or even son when he comes back.

It gives plenty of options I think.
Obviously there is no sterling/salah - can't have them all - so I am hopping the strong bench idea works early on.

I suppose it would be considered maverick on here.

It mostly hinges on the liverpool defence for me, and Bournemouth starting well

the Trossard pick is very punty. why him? my mate's a season ticket holder at Swansea, and whilst Potter is an up and coming/attack-minded manager, he reckons Brighton will struggle.

      wouldn't Pereya/townsend/JWP be better at 6m? just a thought

Yeah your'e correct. I already reconsidered that move. It's a bit mad even allowing for the fixtures. And I have gone Barkley instead of Trossard gone from extremely punty to slightly less punty! 😀
I am going to bench Barkley gw1 at least and have himself and azpileceuta ready to come on for gw3 at the latest.

If you held a premium forward last season what did they return for you? I got 250 points from my premium forward spot.

    Kane 1-22 132 points
    Kun 23-25 30 points
    Vardy 26-38 88 points

Not bad. And I didn't do anything remotely clever in trying to optimise returns. I simply played Kane when he was fit and then dropped him for Kun in 23 who was coming back from injury. A minimal and logical move. Then when Kun had a double blank I moved onto Vardy which was also a clear and logical move.

So two transfers and a near set and forget policy netted me 250 points. How many did Mo get again? What did he cost? Are premium forwards really bad value especially this season? Or did I just luck out? Don't think so as I missed a Kun hattie.

[Figures may be marginally out and actually improved as I can't recall who I had in FH week]

      • 14 Years

Statistically premium forwards have been bad value for a couple of seasons now. That by no means rule them out! Vardy is interesting as he is 2M cheaper than Kane/Auba and 3M cheaper than Aguero!

I think the conclusion I would draw is changing up premium options based on context is wise planning and can yield excellent results. You could have got 300 points doing the same with Sterling>Salah>Mane. Playing it right is obviously hard to read and in this sense you were probably a little lucky with the Kane switch but vardy was a good reading of form/potential/Man City run in. This time out you could see sterling aguero double up from gw4 being better than eg salah/Kane weeks 1-3...

From memory I think Kane got 14G & 4 A in GW1-22 whereas Salah got 14 G, 8A & 11CS... With the extra point per goal and point let CS I think that might have effectively killed the excitement before it started

It was kind of lucky he had his quiet period from GW24-31 or it just would not have been pretty for the strikers

I'm intrigued by the fact that his goal conversion dropped from 22% in his first season to 16% last year... I'm rightly or wrongly expecting that to improve a bit which kind of makes him even more frightening this year, especially at 12.5

I was all set on Jota, but he got booked in every third game last season (11 YC in 33 apps). The season before he was booked 9 times in 44 apps, so still quite a lot.
