Can we remove the captaincy aspect of Fantasy Premier League now, please? The one thing I wanted to improve on going into this season more than anything else was captaincy success rate. Six weeks in, I haven’t made the right call yet and it’s bloody frustrating. Captaining Sterling and vice-captaining Salah over De Bruyne last weekend was the latest in a run of captaincy fails. Surely Gameweek 7 is going to be the one – surely?

It’s another tricky decision for the armband this week with Man City and Liverpool both playing away. Tammy Abraham (£7.5m) is being mooted in the community but can he be trusted?

Harry Kane (£11.0m) and Son Heung-min (£9.7m) have a great fixture at home to Southampton but Spurs are a bit of a mess right now.

Jamie Vardy (£8.9m) could do well on Sunday at home to Newcastle while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) can’t be ruled out either despite an away trip to Old Trafford. Let’s face it, that’s probably a green fixture on the FDR for Arsenal given how United played against West Ham in Gameweek 6.

All that said, it’s hard to look past a free-scoring Man City team off the back of their 8-0 drubbing of Watford. Everton have been shipping goals for fun recently so it could be another big Gameweek for the City attackers.

Sergio Aguero (£12.2m) is the pick of the bunch again this week for those lucky enough to own him. Kevin De Bruyne (£9.9m) is a reliable captaincy pick now given the form he’s in. The big question is whether to trust Raheem Sterling (£12.1m) or not with the armband after two blanks and a benching (and a couple of price drops thrown in for good measure). Is it madness to keep the faith with him or should we play safe with someone like De Bruyne or Salah? How sweet would it be to captain him and he scores 15+ points after being sold by 275,000+ managers?

As my excitement levels rise typing this, the pain of last Saturday returns to remind me what could happen again this weekend. Another Sterling captain blank would be too much to take, but I’m probably going to do it anyway. If he does let me down again, Lord Lundstram is getting the armband for the rest of the season.

Wildcarding during the next international break is on my mind, but I find myself wondering when is the ideal time to play it this season? It’s always nice to have two weeks to build a shiny new squad but that’s not a good enough reason to activate it. I’m happy with my squad and if the next two Gameweeks go smoothly, then there will be no need to hit the button ahead of Gameweek 9.

As Fantasy managers, do we play it too early just because we have it burning a hole in our pocket? When you look at taking a -4 or -8, the natural reaction is, why should I sacrifice points when I could just do it for free with a Wildcard?

The second Wildcard is usually kept for the final third of the campaign which is an awful long way away. Use a Wildcard now and you are effectively setting your team up for the next five months.

Is there more to be gained from being patient with it and using it in November/December to prepare for the busy festive schedule? It’s something I’ve never done but can see myself doing it this season.

There’s a wealth of options delivering consistently at present but fast forward to December and there could be a whole new crop players that we desire. Having a Wildcard in hand if that does happen could prove to be very powerful. It’s something to think about, at least.

Good luck in Gameweek 7 folks.

Lessons learned from Gameweek 6:

Not necessarily. Magnus Carlsen is on for a blinder and he still has his. Top 400 in the world. There are plenty that are very competent managers with their Wildcard still in their pocket.

    Tomori - Lowton - TAA - Soyuncu - Lundstram

I honestly think the 1st WC is the least important chip of all of them. Chances are you mess up your original team and the old team outscore your new WC team. The other chips are far more important. Instant points if you play them correct and are lucky.

For me it would mean not picking someone like Rico (not 100% nailed). There is always panic about huge rotation during Christmas, but it's usually blown out of proportion. I've played my WC already tho.

I've done this a few times over the years and to be honest, by the time i got here my team was usually well shaped and i felt the wc was wasted the moves I made. It's hard to predict rotation so a wc isn't that helpful

No one way works. I agree with Camzy, its about using it when you need it, team out of form, injuries, etc. Seen people play it in week 2 with great success. Others holding off may be able to have a stronger bench for the festive period.

      1. SADIO SANÉ
        • 11 Years

Yeah true, I like holding it as a 'just in case' and then try to play normally.

But then there also comes a point, like now the fixtures are changing for some teams, where I feel like I can be more risky (knowing I can wildcard if it backfires).

Players like Vardy, Son, D.Silva, Aurier, Pereira, maybe even an Arsenal fullback, could be pretty hit or miss - if it's a big miss I can wildcard back to a more standard team, a team without one can't really do this..which could actually be a good thing for them 😀

I have been one to hold on for as long as possible as well. I like the comfort of the safety net.

And to your point, I dropped Salah/Greenwood for Son/Abraham. If that turns out to be a huge mistake it's nice to have the WC to potentially use over the break.

Used this strategy last year but did not really have bad choices or injuries so I had good opportunity to hold it. Season ended in top 1k.

This season has not good or bad but I still feel like playing patientyl and holding to Barnes, Salah, Vvd etc for a couple of weeks. Might activate it after second IB if the recent form continues.

I've held off WC , and lost out on a few price hikes for likes of Tammy and Abraham. Have been procrastinating on team structure - gone fr om 4-4-2 to 3-5-2 and now 3-4-3 with Kun up top. But team is now unbalanced, so thinking I'll try to scrape by this GW and play wild card within 3 GW's

My 2 cents - If your team starts the season reasonably well and is well balanced toward using your FTs to jump on/off bandwagons (good players) easily then you don't need to WC early. You then also get to gain on player pricing.

If not, then early WC is a serious option for WC2 price advantage.

Having your WC intact for the festive run with a lot more player/team information, and the ability to setup for the new year is definitely an advantage if you're keeping it for single & double gw advantage.

Research (and luck of course) is what defines success ...

      Easier said than done 😉

    So current WC team:

    A)

    Pope (Button)
    Tomori, Ota, Diop, (Soy, Lundstram)
    Sterling, KDB, Mount, Son, (Cantwell)
    Pukki, Abraham, Firmino

    1.5 ITB

Main 2 concerns is no TAA or Mane/Salah. My thoughts are Firmino is outscoring Mane and better value than Salah. TAA has great attacking potential but at that price you should be getting CS, after this week Livepool have a tough fixture run.

Here is a WC with Mane/ TAA in. I feel it’s not as balanced.

    B) pope (Button)
    TAA, Ota, Diop, (Soy, Lundstram)
    Mane, KDB, Mount, Yarmolenko (Cantwell)
    Aguero, Abraham, Pukki.

    A or B?

Those who are being put off by others on here saying that their choices are "too template and won't get them anywhere in OR", according to Ragabolly's site, check out the number/ proportion of teams with this combination of players in the Top 10k and Overall!

    Ota
    Salah, Sterling, KDB, Mount
    Pukki, Abraham

    Top 10k: 7 teams (0.07%)
    Overall (sample): 0.03%

That should hopefully give you some comfort that it is sufficiently different to the vast majority of teams out there!
And that's before you add in popular picks like TAA, Soy, VVD, Cantwell which will reduce the proportion even further!

I thought that too but removing him from the list still showed low %s:

          Top 10k: 181 (1.81%)
          Overall: 0.57%

And that’s a list that’s seen as template as they come on here

            • 10 Years

That’s quite a significant total for such a high number of players still but I get you

            1. Don Kloppeone
              • 9 Years
              7 years, 13 days ago

It’s quite a few people but it’s hard to call something chosen by 0.5%-2% of people “the template”

I know this place is not representative of wider casualdom but just wanted to make some feel better!

I don’t disagree but those like me who are holding back the WC and used FTs / hits to fix more pressing issues are often made to feel that having the template will be disastrous. I’m just saying it’s less template that they think!

The prediction sites are far from being dialed in yet and if you have any doubt about a fall or rise that might price you out then do not hesitate.

Always a risk moving early but then again risk is what makes the game fun.

This has to be the week where you make a differential captaincy choice with less downside than normal given the multitude of options. I wouldn’t blame anyone with Tammy to go for him. I’m going for Kane which is madness on one level but the upside if he hauls will be sweet and he is at home to Saints.

    1. Don Kloppeone
      • 9 Years
      7 years, 13 days ago

He is still owned by 20.5% though but I get your point

I am torn between Salah, KDB and punting on Tammy. Not interested in Sterling.
      Currently on Salah

      1. Tshelby
        • 11 Years
        7 years, 13 days ago

Also currently on Salah but I think he will be very populair among the captain choices which makes me doubt it.

          • 9 Years

In the same boat. Last week my punt on KDB obv paid off nicely. Need a similar choice! Don’t think lightning will strike twice so KDB may be pushing my luck.

Choice is Tammy, Salah, Sterling, KDB

Outside choices: Mount, VVD, Pukki, Ota

I think differential captain could pay off when all the other most popular captain options have a tricky features - because you do not rely only on your captain to haul but the others to fail (if your differential captain and the usual suspects do both good then you win nothing). Thus said i can't see Salah blank vs SHU or Kun/De Bruyne vs EVE. However Kane captain is not a bad option at all. I think GW7 have the potential to be the highest scoring GW so far this season.

    4. Valar(Keith)
      • 17 Years

Sterling is going to be a differential captain at this rate.. Especially since many won't captain him due to him being benched last week.. Ie failed logic

Wildcard sorted. Tactics are a double up on Norwich, West Ham, Liverpool and Chelsea and a treble up on Man City:-

    Fabianski
    TAA Diop Otamendi
David Silva KDB Mount Mane (subject to injury status)
    Abraham Aubameyang Pukki
    Subs:- Button Lundstram Cantwell Pieter's

Is this too maverick? I like it, obviously, but would welcome the criticism out there!

I like it! I want Aubameyang soon. Don’t worry about Mané, he will start and is training today.
I do think Pope is better option and the stats show West Ham have been a bit lucky with their clean sheets.

West Ham concede too many shots and xG, double up not worth it surely.
Dilva not 100% nailed, Aguero/Sterling is a must
Aubameyang get points every week, but playing in a side which plays so bad now, so it can come to end at some point
Liverpool had bad fixtures coming, u can risk and go without or with 1 pool player, invest in Son/Sterling/Kun etc

      1. Superkitten
        • 7 Years

I like it. Wouldn’t double up on West Ham defence though.

I’ve gone for something quite similar on my WC this week:

      Fabianski; (McGovern)
      TAA; Otamendi; Söyüncü; (Lowton; Lundstram)
      Salah; KDB; Dilva; Mount; (Yarmolenko)
      Firmino; Abraham; Pukki

Debating whether to make these changes:
      Salah > Sterling
      Otamendi > Matip

      Thoughts on that appreciated!
