In his latest Pro Pundits article, Ash – aka ‘Chief’ – looks at how to reinvest the cash freed up by Sergio Aguero’s unavailability.

It can seem disappointing when your second substitute unexpectedly racks up a double-digit haul only to be inevitably lost on the bench with the completion of the Gameweek. But that’s exactly what happened to me and hundreds of thousands of FPL managers with Todd Cantwell (£4.6m) in Gameweek 13.

He hadn’t registered an attacking return since Gameweek 5 and had not been playing many full matches of late, so it almost seemed like a no-brainer in not starting him for Norwich City’s match at Goodison Park.

If anything, Cantwell’s ten points just made Diego Rico’s (£4.3m) score of zero and Mason Mount’s (£6.7m) one-point cameo stand out even more. Jamie Vardy (£9.7m) did the business again with his armband duties, but then again, it seemed that everyone on Twitter captained him, so he was hardly an out-of-the-box pick.

With hindsight, my FPL team deserved a red arrow after only four of my starting players registered Fantasy returns. Yet thanks to Frederic Guilbert’s (£4.4m) eight points on Monday night my overall rank only shifted downwards by 1,500 places, which is practically a grey arrow in my eyes.

Once again, I have two free transfers at hand to refine my team with December’s fixture rush around the corner.

Injury worry for Aguero's owners as Sterling is frustrated by VAR call

In some ways, Sergio Aguero’s (£11.9m) injury is a blessing in disguise for my FPL team. Pep Guardiola confirmed that the Argentinean striker has been ruled out for at least a few matches, so I can sell Aguero without having to worry about him tormenting Newcastle United’s defence as he has done so in the past.

In truth, he was bound to be rotated with Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m) anyway – I just wanted to give him one more chance against Chelsea.

I will almost certainly make two transfers this time around, even three if I can justify it.

Along with Aguero, I will gladly sell Andriy Yarmolenko (£5.8m). He was my first substitute last weekend and, to my surprise, the Ukraine international started against Tottenham on Saturday. Unfortunately, he was subbed off before he could register a Fantasy return and his form between Gameweeks 4-7 is long gone. Put simply, I need to sell him before his value drops again.

I may not make my FPL transfers until Friday afternoon but there are a number of options that I’m thinking over at the moment.

Jesus and Dele Alli (£8.4m) for Aguero and Yarmolenko seems like one pathway ahead. However, Jesus has struggled of late even when starting matches and could there be more value in Tottenham Hotspur’s other attackers, as opposed to Alli? A hat-trick for England over the international break and three goals under his new head coach suggests that Harry Kane (£10.8m) has rediscovered his form for club and country. Spurs need to win league matches and he could be the key to their success under Jose Mourinho.

Therefore, I’m also mulling over the possibility of selling Aguero and Yarmolenko for Kane and Lucas Moura (£7.0m) for a Tottenham double-up. I have question marks over Moura, however, so Youri Tielemans (£6.7m) could be a safer choice. Getting in Kevin De Bruyne (£10.2m) and Raul Jimenez (£7.4m) has also crossed my mind.

As for the option of converting my two free transfers into a ‘mini-Wildcard’ (two free transfers and a -4 hit), I’m looking at selling Matthew Lowton (£4.5m) for a Crystal Palace defender.

This may seem odd as the Eagles have not kept many clean sheets recently but I think that may change soon, especially when considering that between Gameweeks 14 and 30, Palace only play one of last year’s top four once. This prospect seems almost too good to ignore, though I might wait one more week on it. In any case, I’m confident that Crystal Palace defensive assets may become fashionable again in the weeks ahead.

I’ve been very fortunate with two back-to-back captain hauls with Vardy. It almost makes sense for me to trust him once again with armband duties as Leicester host an Everton team lacking in form.

But with that said, Sadio Mane (£12.2m) at home to Brighton is also a good shout, as is Anthony Martial (£7.8m) against Aston Villa at Old Trafford. And let’s not forget Tammy Abraham (£8.0m) will be up against a West Ham defence that has conceded nine goals in their last three league games.

It’s actually great that we are spoilt for captaincy choices as there is not an obvious template choice for Gameweek 14. If one of the named players does immensely well and the rest flounder, it could provide opportunities for FPL managers’ overall ranks to fluctuate immensely in just one Gameweek. Let’s hope we make the right call.

Ash, known by many as Chief, recorded his best-ever FPL finish of 110th in 2011/12 and has become a hugely popular name on Twitter ever since.

A testimonial for Phil Jones will not be happening. When he signed a new contract in February, it was part of the deal, but he was against it due his decreasing popularity. He is self-deprecating about it and says only his mum and dad would attend

    Unpopular opinion. Here me out

Ings is a better option than Jimenez for next 6 matches.

    - Ings is 1.5m cheaper. Offers better value

    - Ings has 6 goals 1 assist in 300 fewer minutes compared to Jimenez 6 goals 2 assists.

    - Ings has argubly better fixtures in next 6. Not a big deciding factor though as both has done well in tough opposition s

    - Ings has more resting period. Wolves play 2 additional Europa league games.

    Agree? Thoughts are welcomed

Really like Ings, think you're in there with a shout.
I think its a matter of the quality of the team around each, though. Wolves are, at this moment, better than Saints.
Having said that, we've looked a lot more energized in a few of our recent games. THink we may have turned a corner, and Ings could improve.
Our high press certainly makes him a fun option.

What about Jimenez Being an Iron man that never gets/needs rest & Ings is the glass man that can't complete 90 ??

I see lots of upside in Jimenez tbh.

Norwich home in gw 18 is just cherry on the top too 😉

It doesn't sound bad if you don't have bigger problems in your team. Or you have, but you need more money to deal with the problems. The only concern is that Jimenez plays in a better team and is nailed on.

Not really tough to outscore Jimenez over few weeks since he is not really explosive. Can work.

I ended up going with Jimenez, but Ings looks like a really good differential punt, IMO.

I think they're very close, but Ings has blanked only against LEI and MCI in the last 7. I think Jiminez is a touch too costly with all the other options out there

I like Ings to be honest but i can tell you a lot of cons against him:

      - playing for a worse team than Wolves
      - rarely playing 90minutes (jimmy is playing always the full 90mins)
      - rotation risk in addition to the above (as soon as he doesnt score in2-3 consecutive matches he will be subbed early or benched). Jimmy is as nailed as any top striker for a club could be
      - Jimmy ownership is much hire than Ings and is seriously increasing so if he hauls you will drop seriously (could be benefit if you are chasing and looking for differential though)

But as i said i like Ings and if you dont have the money he is definitely the best options with the upcoming fixtures in that 6.0M bracket.
However if you can afford 1.5M more i would recommend you to go for Jimmy 🙂

Doesbt matter if he plays on a poorer team as long as he keeps scoring goals consistent ly Plus Ings is nailed. Only way he doesn't play is getting injured

Not too worried about ownership. Works both ways. If Ings keeps on firing you will climb up the ranks 😉

Soy is a very likely 6 points. Lundstram will probably only get 1 or 2 points but there is a chance he could haul and if he does he is highly owned so it will hurt... depends on your risk appetite.

    Pope Heaton
TAA Tomori Lund -- Rico Lascelles
Sterling KDB Mount Martial - Cantwell
    Vardy Tammy Rashford

    Only way i can is
A: Sterling + Martial + Rashford >> Mane + Son + Ings (-4)...but loosing both utd attackers before AVL sensible?
    B: Sterling + KDB + Heaton >> Mane + Son + Button (-4).....basically KDB > Son (-4) doesnt seem right too
    C: do something else i.e. Sterling + Mount + Rashford >> Mane + Maddison/Pulisic + Jimenez (-4)

These articles... Does anyone really get anything from them? Not being unkind but I'd be genuinely interested to know.

For me they tend to be too situational, too specific that manager's team.

It's personal preference but I've decided this season to read fewer not more opinion pieces and try to stick to form, fixtures and stats. Not even listening to the Scoutcast. It's working for me so far but I'm a dataset of one!

Fair enough. But for me, taking the current article as an example, I don't own Aguero, if I did I might have some other differences in my team that might make the suggested transfers unnecessary or undesirable. I don't know, there are so many opinions out there, I want to be able to cut through them to try and get to the crux of it all!

I don't have Aguero... But I do have Auba and given the price points I can take from it, for example they're in a similar price range so dropping Auba may open up moves for me similar to the ones he mentioned, especially with only 1G and 1A in his last 6.

The main problem is that the people doing them arent any good at writing. This guy in particular is a very poor writer. There is no flow, no imagery, just nothing to make it worth reading. The opinions themselves are template and you see random people in the comments sections on here say the same things every day.

If you are hired to write articles you should be good at writing. It shouldnt be enough to have some twitter followers.

I think theres a couple of different angles here - in some articles, the insight is valuable, something you can take and use to reinforce your own decisions or strategy, or use to test your plans if you disagree - does your plan still hold up?

The other side is that they might offer nothing in terms of strategy or guidance, but are just interesting to read. We've all enjoyed reading something, even if we read it knowing there wasn't anything to learn along the way, right?

  16. Zenith UK

    Thoughts? I have a team I want to get but no wildcard so I'll have to do with a makeshift option;

    1FT & 0.2ITB
    Pope
    VVD, Lindelof, Soy, Lund
    Mane (c), Tielemans, KdB
    Auba, Tammy, Vardy

    Button, Tomori, Cantwell, Saka

    A) Auba & KDB > Kane & Son (-4) - 0.6 remaining
    B) KDB & Lindelof > Alli & Robbo (-4) - 0 remaining
    C) Auba, KDB, Lindelof > Kane, Alli, Robbo/TAA (-8) - 0.2/0 remaining
    D) Auba, Saka, Lindelof > Greenwood, Son/Alli, Robbo (-8) - 0/1.3 remaining
    E) Auba, Saka, Lindelof > Mousset, Alli, Robbo (-8) - 0 remaining
    F) Other ideas?

Sorry for the wall of text. Effectively looking to bring Spurs players in. I like the idea of Alli, even happier with the idea of Moura if he gets the nod this weekend after only 60 mins in CL.

    Couple of quick questions

    1) Who is more essential to get Mane or Son?
    2) If both, is KDB (bought at 9.5m) > Son (-4) worth it?
    3) Jimenez or Ings?

    1. F4L
      • 11 Years
      6 years, 8 months ago

      Mane
Son isn't worth his price tag right now
Jimenez, unless Ings has been replaced by a doppleganger, he has no chance of playing 3 games in a week

      1. Rhodes your boat

I wouldn't say so, playing noticeably wider under Jose. Alli playing second striker, i'd prefer him.

But we all know Son's quality, so who knows.

    2. premierleaguesgreatestevert…
      • 6 Years

      1) Mane by a mile, essential atm
      2) N/A but for what it's worth, no it's not. KDB driving this team back into form... slowly but surely mind
      3) Jimi but mainly cos I think Ings is a troll waiting to happen esp with how prone to injury he is

After the return of Kante, Kante-Jorginho-Kovacic seems to be the ideal midfield trio (at least for harder games). I was planning to keep Mount for this GW and make the switch the other week. Should I be concerned for the weekend or it is more of a longer term concern (easy games Mount, harder games Kovacic)?

Wouldn’t usually take a -4 for a defender but have otamendi who’s dropping value every week so did Maupay and Otamendi to Tammy and Gary Cahill.
What else seems to be a popular transfer this week?
