Captain Sensible

Leicester and Liverpool options go head-to-head for the captaincy this weekend.

They both face favourable home fixtures in Gameweek 14 as Everton and Brighton come to the King Power Stadium and Anfield respectively.

To help you make the tough decision we’ve got another edition of Captain Sensible.

As ever, we’ll go through the underlying statistics for each of the candidates and compare them against the defensive data of their upcoming opponents.

As this article uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those signed up for the 2019/20 season can access it in full.

Captain Poll

For the third Gameweek in a row, Jamie Vardy (£9.7m) is the most popular captain option.

Ahead of a home meeting with Everton, 29.9% of the voters have leant their backing to the Leicester City forward.

It’s not hard to understand why. Over the last five Gameweeks, Vardy has been remarkably reliable, scoring seven times during that period.

Furthermore, since Gameweek 4, he has registered just one blank at the King Power Stadium, registering 9.6 points per game there between then and now.

Meanwhile, Everton are without a clean sheet away from home since Gameweek 1 and are potentially about to lose manager Marco Silva to the sack.

Not far behind Vardy in the poll is Sadio Mané (£12.2m), who has a 24.8% share of the votes as of Thursday lunch-time.

The Liverpool man and his colleagues will host a travel-sick Brighton side on Saturday afternoon, who have conceded an average of 2.3 goals per game in their last three away matches.

Meanwhile, Mané himself is on an encouraging run of form at Anfield. He has registered an attacking return there for the last four Premier League matches in a row and you have to go back to Gameweek 3 for the last time he blanked in Merseyside this season.

A long way off in third place is Raheem Sterling (£12.0m), backed by just 6.6% of the voters in the poll.

Arguably, the Manchester City man was unfortunate not to get his eighth league goal of the campaign against Chelsea after a controversial VAR call, and there are clearly some Fantasy managers left who believe he has more to deliver.

This week it’s a trip to Newcastle which is perhaps cause for patience. The Magpies have conceded at least twice in three of their last four matches although they have been much harder to beat at home.

In front of their own fans, only Leicester (three) have conceded fewer goals than Newcastle this season (four).

Mohamed Salah (£12.2m) is currently fourth in the poll with a 6.1% share of the vote.

After 90 minutes midweek, there is certainly less concern about his ankle problems and, like Mané, he gets to face a defence that tends to be quite obliging away from home.

The Egyptian himself has scored in all but one of Liverpool’s home matches in the Premier League this season.

The 5.8% of managers who backed Tammy Abraham (£8.0m) in the captain poll will be hoping for good news from Frank Lampard in his Friday press conference after he sustained a knock to the hip in the Champions League.

If he does start against West Ham then he could have an enjoyable Saturday afternoon. The Hammers have been very poor defensively recently, conceding three goals in each of their last three matches.

As Fantasy managers continue to get positive vibes from Jose Mourinho’s arrival at Spurs, Harry Kane (£10.8m) and Son Heung-min (£9.7m) are naturally attracting some support for the captaincy.

They have been backed by 4% and 3.9% respectively for the visit of Bournemouth to north London.

Christian Pulisic (£7.5m) who has more points than any other Chelsea player since Gameweek 10, has been garnered the support of 3.2% for that meeting with West Ham.

Kevin de Bruyne (£10.2m), Benjamin Mendy (£5.8m), Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) are the only other options with more than a 1% share.

Because while it may have been the right time to go, pochetino is probably held in the highest regard of pretty much any spurs manager in the modern era. If Harry redknapp had made the switch it would have been forgotten about by next week.

How do you think spurs fans would enjoy watching pochetino do his thing at arsenal while Mourinho does his thing at Spurs.

        It's a living nightmare

As you'll all have seen, Emery is gone! - https://www.arsenal.com/news/unai-emery-leaves-club

Some good fixtures in the short term, anyone taking a punt or perhaps changing their decision about selling any players they own?

There's definitely some players there I'd like to see get a run in the team and hope we see less rotation - Tierney, Ceballos, dare I say it, even Ozil?!

Anyone you're hoping emerges as an option?

Be interesting to see how much Ljunberg changes things round in first game, or whether he sticks to something similar Emery was running with.

Bit like Mourinho really - how quickly can you safely say THIS is the first XI (mostly).

If anyone still owns Auba they should hold for now.

Their 3 best fixtures of the season are the next 3, so if anyone fancies a punt it needs to be now. However, I have no idea what the teamsheet will be. Also, where do you fit them in with Pope, 3 x Chelsea, 3 x Leicester, 3 x Liverpool and Lundstram?

That would be it, I've already done Auba > Vardy for free, which I don't regret despite the news. That freed up enough funds for me to do this transfer if I choose to. Tough one.

I've owned Auba all season, was set on selling but will wait and reassess now. I think id be foolish to ditch a player of his calibre with the possibility of a 'new manager bounce' on the horizon.

I’d be surprised if anyone dismissed the potential impact this could have. As an Arsenal fan, I think it’s as simple as Sunday going from an almost certain defeat... to an almost certain win. Still not getting Auba for FPL, but will for Sky.

If Tammy out then may bring in Lacazette on free transfer- had been considering Ings but if Arsenal get the same bounce as Spurs can see a few goals.

When I am in such dilemma, I just ask my wife what to do. (She doesn't know much about football!) She says to let go of Auba whatever be Arsenal situation. So it's a twist on Auba.

I agree with your wife, sounds like a smart woman 😀 . Should we do it then? Auba&Tammy&Madds for Vardy&Rash&Pulisic? Two good differentials and Lacca is also a threat now so that makes me feel better.

Let's do it then. Two good differentials in Rash and Pulisic. And a much needed shield pick of Vardy!

Damn you fpl haha. But to be honest I think Pukki has better chances in that game then Auba. I look at it this way Pulisic better form then Tammy and has two juicy games at hoome, Vardy is cpt material, Madds not so much and Rash/Auba can go 50/50. So I think it is higher reward then risk. Already on a -4 as I did my transfers early, sadly. As you can see, multiple issues still. Worth a further -4 in this scenario?

    1. Tammy > Ings/Rashford/Jesus/Bats?
    2. Diop > Soyuncu/Aurier?
    3. Don't take anymore hits, not worth it.
    4. Something else?

    Cheers in advance.

As a former arsenal fan and Lacazette owner, this is very exciting news. I hope the lads play with spirit now. Don't hate Emery but not shedding any tears to see him go, just that his tactics were not good enough. Arsenal need to show belief and a fighting spirit.

Means I don't support the club anymore but still have a soft spot for Arsenal. When they started suffering heavy defeats to the likes of Bayern, it affected my emotionla and psychological wellbeing. I had to sever the ties for my own health and so I don't really support any football club, I just enjoy the matches. This way I'm happier and my fpl decisions aren't biased due to club devotion. Works out for me.

Just said I don't support any club. Don't really care who wins the title. I just enjoy watching talented players from all clubs.

Kind of in the same boat.

I support AC Milan (definitely still do).

But I only now watch games (all leagues) for the fun of the game. Not too emotionally attached to inevitable AC Milan bad results anymore.

If Pellegrini an Silva go too, in the next few weeks, this could be season defining in terms of getting assets who have massive potential. Don't remember so many teams — with class players who could be great — under new management before Christmas. Shake up.

Which is better if Abraham is unfit?

    A- Abraham > Firmino/Laca/Jimi (-4), play 4-4-2
    B- Abraham + Saka > Ings + Pulisic (-8), play 3-4-3 (bench Lundstram)

Think I’m getting Kane instead of Son, just easier doing the straight swap for Auba.

But dependant on the Abraham news, what’s the better option?

    A) Abraham > Jimenez
    B) Abraham > Ings

B means I can upgrade Mount to Pulisic, A means I’m stuck with Mount.

Aurier a good move for this GW? He's looked like a winger at times!

    Team would be:
    Pope
    VVD - Soy - Lund - Aurier
    Mané - KDB - Sterling - Tielemans - Mount
    Vardy
