With the start of a new Premier League season moving ever closer, we switch our focus to Sky Sports Fantasy Football.

£50,000 is on offer to the game’s winner in 2021/22, with cash prizes of £5,000 and £1,000 dished out to those managers finishing in the other two podium places.

The fourth and fifth-placed managers are awarded games consoles, as are the highest-scoring Fantasy bosses of the month.

If you’re new to the Sky game or merely in need of a refresher of the rules and scoring system, we will go over the basics of the game in the article below.

FPL price reveal and launch reaction from three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser

HOW DO I PLAY?

TEAM SELECTION

Just like in Fantasy Premier League, managers select a team of players that will either earn attacking, defensive or bonus points in an attempt to score more than friends, colleagues and/or the rest of the world. However, this is not a squad-based game: you choose simply a starting XI and do not have a bench.

The budget, like in FPL, is £100m. There is no quota for players from the same club, however.

TRANSFERS

Game Weeks run from Friday to Thursday with managers allowed transfers in between Match Days, allowing the maximisation of potential points by bringing in an asset yet to play for one who has already been involved that week.

Instead of one free switch per Game Week as per FPL, the Sky Sports game allocates 40 transfers that can be used at any time during the season – with a limit of five in one Game Week – creating the need for a more long-term strategy.

CHIPS

‘Overhauls’ (the equivalent of Wildcards) are also available in Sky Sports, with two being allocated every season in specific periods.

CAPTAINCY

In the Sky Sports game, you can name more than one captain in a Game Week so long as the players in question are in action on different days. For example, if there were fixtures on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday in any given Game Week, a Sky Sports Fantasy manager could name a different skipper on each of those Match Days, providing they did so before that day’s deadline. Managers can also schedule their captains ahead of a Game Week, too.

HOW DO YOU SCORE POINTS?

The points structure is largely similar to FPL in Sky Sports Fantasy but tends to award more points for the actions mentioned below.

ActionPoints scored
Starting XI2
Substitution appearance1
Goal scored by a goalkeeper/defender7
Goal scored by a midfielder6
Goal scored by a striker5
Goal assist3
Clean sheet by a goalkeeper (must play 60+ mins)7
Clean sheet by a defender (must play 60+ mins)5
A penalty save by a goalkeeper5
Man of the Match3

CAN MY TEAM LOSE POINTS?

Unfortunately, just like in FPL there are a few ways to lose points too.

ActionPoints scored
Missing a penalty-3
Every goal conceded from the second goal onwards-1
Each yellow card-1
Each red card-3
Each own goal-2

HOW DO BONUS POINTS WORK?

Just like in FPL, there are additional points on offer for other events in matches – although the structure is slightly different, as you will see below:

Tier 1 ActionPoints scored
3 saves made (GK only)2
4 tackles won2
60 completed passes2
2 shots on target2
Tier 2 ActionPoints scored
5+ saves made (GK only)3
5+ tackles won3
70+ completed passes3
3+ shots on target3

head over to our Premium Members Area to see which players will potentially benefit from the Sky Sports bonus on offer for saves, tackles, passes and shots on target.

HOW DO I PLAY AGAINST MY FRIENDS?

There are a number of different ways to compete against others in the Sky Sports game. You can create or join a Free League with your friends and colleagues but there are ways to win money too.

Sky Sports can actually administer your money league for you to avoid any awkwardness post-season. You can choose the entry fee (either £2, £5, £10 or £20 per person) and the prize structure beforehand and Sky Sports will take care of the rest.

We have already set up our annual, free-to-enter Fantasy Football Scout mini-league, which you can enter by heading to the ‘Leagues’ tab and clicking ‘Join+’.

Is Thomas at Leicester nailed on for first few weeks?

    1. Scapegoat Salah

Not sure, he only broke into the team last few games last season. Justin probably safer pick but Thomas maybe more exciting

If they sell Chilwell and don't sign a replacement, yes.

I guess they will sign a replacement

Structure done, and now plan done:

    McCarthy
    TAA | VVD | Vinagre
    Salah | Auba | Son | Pereira | Soucek
    Kane | Mitrovic

Nyland | Ferguson | Mitchell | Davis (Brewster if loaned out)

    GW2: Son to Greenwood
    GW3: Auba to KdB
    GW4: Mitchell/Ferguson to Doherty

Now let’s see if the plan plays out! Doubtful with price changes and unforeseen circumstances but feels nice to finally have a plan.

Good luck all and thanks everyone for your help on my questions, thoughts are welcome!

Doherty over VvD to start. But the rest of the plan seems pretty sound. I don't think Greenwood alone can cover United though...

Thanks, I did consider this but that would leave one pool defender and hoping Vinagre can cover Doherty to some extent.

One Pool defender is fine imo for the first few weeks. If they become a fortress, you can WC them in. If they are bad, you're stuck moving funds out of defense into attack which takes too many precious transfers and time.

Last season I did the same thing. I started with TAA, VvD and Digne. After GW 3 I did VvD > Soyuncu to free up funds for hot attackers.

Fair, I think if Liverpool had started the season away (with 2 away games in the first 3) then I would probably do that and go with one pool defender.

It’s a very good plan rather have ASM than pereira and bank the money in case I need it. Keep an eye on Chelsea in preseason, if they do well then it could be son to say Ziyech for the start

      1. Scapegoat Salah
        • 9 Years

It’s a thought, I really want Pereira as a little differential punt, yes Chelsea could effect whether I start with Son or not, will monitor them.

Yeah it’s a concern for the first 3 GWs (if all goes to plan one of the 4.0s is out at GW4)

    4. Bullet Eder

Bench is far too weak imo and starting Soucek every week is not a good thing

        I’ll agree with this

Maybe downgrade Son as you have Kane and upgrade bench

I’ve noticed you plan to do this in GW2 but maybe it’ll save you a transfer

Is Son does do something then one GW worth of points isn’t a season wrecker

        1. Scapegoat Salah
          • 9 Years

Would leave me with 10 players in GW1

I'd get Doherty from the start. No point in booking a defensive transfer IMO.

Son to a Chelsea Midfielder can work out easily to give you the money

      1. Scapegoat Salah
        • 9 Years
        5 years, 6 months ago

Cheers Amey, that would leave 7.5 so would have to be Mount, who I’m unsure about.

Unless I give up on Pereira and have say ASM/Armstrong & Ziyech

        1. Scapegoat Salah
          • 9 Years

Of which I’m a little against the latter as it feels like I’m then moving too close to the template 🙂

Yup, boils down to basically seeing these guys in pre season:

            - ASM
            - Armstrong
            - Pereira
            - Mount
            - Ziyech
            - Havertz?

Fair enough, I think if you have a clear plan it can help with not kneejerking and remembering the reasoning/knowledge you used in the first place to create a team.
My plan is fairly simple and only involves moving a few players, the main issue will be price changes which could tempt into an early WC, which tbf is neither good nor bad.

          Similar team / plans

After GW2 Auba & Maddie > KDB & Greenwood (Kane > Aguero if not performing)

          McCarthy
          TAA VVD Doherty
          Salah Auba Maddie Armstrong ASM
          Kane Mitrovic

Nyland Vinagre Ferguson or Mitchell & Davis.

I wonder which Aston Villa we'll be getting. They really tightened up after the lockdown, Douglas Luiz was quality and Dean Smith finally decided to secure his defense with two defensive midfielders. The display vs Arsenal particularly impressed me, great backs to the wall performance. Keeping Grealish will be key, as will signing better quality in the wide areas - Watkins is close to a move - and they should be able to survive. I don't see myself owning their assets anytime soon but things can change quickly.

What do you think about this team?

    McCarthy
    Alexander-Arnold / Van Dijk / Doherty / Vinagre
    Salah / Bruno Fernandes / De Bruyne / Saint-Maximin
    Ings / Mitrovic

    Nyland / Douglas / Stephens / Davis

I will probably switch Bruno Fernandes or De Bruyne for Aubameyang on GW1

How do you afford this? See my team below. I don’t understand how you have so many premium defenders. Your budget is more than £100m?

        4,5
        7,5 / 6,5 / 4,5 / 6
        11,5 / 10,5 / 12 / 5,5
        8,5 / 6

        4 / 4 / 4,5 / 4,5

Only reasonS why I will not do same is you’d have two non-playing Manchester premiums GW1, plus you are locked in to 4-4-2, and double double defence is high risk - even though Wolves and Lpool were most solid last season

That's a good sign that he's made a valuable team. It is affordable. It's mainly because of his cheap midfielders and relatively budget forwards.

Although he can't do Bruno and/or KdB > Auba without making some sacrifices.

        1. The Frenchie

the good thing about starting with Kane/vardy/werner is it's an easy swap to anyone

if you start with Jimi and ings and one of the expensive strikers starts fast or you want augero it's a tricky move and downgrading a mid to get them

Ings played excelent last season, and now he hS great fixtures....but i dont think that he worth 8.5. So Mitro for 2.5 less and good fixtures is my choice

Bottomed: Other than wishful thinking, what evidence is there that Ferguson will be this season’s AWB/Lundstram? We aren’t owed a 4.0 starting defender, it doesn’t happen every season and while preseason will obviously tell us more, there isn’t much evidence to suggest he is nailed for a starting spot.

He was literally bought to replace AWB who left a hole at RB last season which they filled via an OOP Kelly and Ward(who they initially replaced with AWB). So I'd say literally by definition that Ferguson could be an AWB

I toyed with the 5 atb idea.
Only way going there is triple Pool Defense IMO.

What i like about my draft is can have Salah for plum home games and get Bruno or Raz in 1 FT if I want to © them. Triple Pool locks us out of that option.

Like that you've also limited budget attackers number. I have 2 in 11 and happy to ride with them only. Too many of them are just unreliable ....

Rather A out of the 2 as spurs fixtures are too good to turn down in the first 8. My team looks similar but I’m going VVD instead with TAA at the moment but they may change closer to the start

    Opinions?

    Ryan / Button
    TAA / Doherty / Vinagre / KWP / Ferguson
    Auba / Salah / Son / Greenwood / ASM
    Vardy / Brewster / Davis

    GW3: Auba > KDB
    GW4: Son > 4.5 & Davis > Jiménez

Not sure about the Wolves defensive double-up or Vardy over Werner/Kane etc... Hoping Brewster gets that loan to a PL club too!

    Thanks!

We have practically the same team. I like the flexibility. By GW3 though I think we may go in different directions but for the first few games this draft will do very well imo.

I will tear this whole thing up though if Vinagre isn't nailed.

Son won't play ST and Ispwich Town GW1.

Soucek is not that bad an option against Newcastle honestly. Also I don't want book transfers for the first 2 gameweeks. Things can change very quickly in FPL.

A is less risky so perhaps you could expect a more steady/consistent return with the PL proven Mitrovic and the mighty Moe.

Option B might be explosive/disappointing depending on how fast ziyech could adapt and whether Kane could continue his post Covid form( probably will).

Personally i would go with option A since its still the start of the season with no one to chase.

I'm just really looking at the first 5-6 weeks. I have a roadmap for the first 4. You don't hang on to a budget striker for life.

Yes that's why I said have a closer look at Ayew's first 4 fixtures and you won't get him if you're looking short term.

          DCL/Antonio/Mitro would be my picks.

Template teams, benching United players, transfer plans that won't be followed. Boring!

Where is the originality? Attack early-season with all you've got. A very high finish is facilitated by a very fast start. You don't get that by posting a 90% template RMT with all replies pushing you towards 100% template.

GW1 - GW12, be bold with selections, take hits if necessary, be daring with captaincy.
GW13 - GW25, reign it in, consolidate, don't take hits, save transfer where possible, go with sheep captains.
GW26 - GW38, selective aggression to find opportunities to out-wit the dreaded straight jacket that is EO.

Yeah people often disagree with me but I keep churning out high finishes by ignoring the incessant noise of boring FPL managers cofirming each others biases.

I don't get good start. I think because i trust too many midpriced attackers. Trying to solve that by going 4 atb from the start and limiting those midpriced attackers to 2 (Armstrong & Mitro)

I'm original though. Will fail mostly 😛

      1) Identify the players that will stick in your team for most of the season. Typically these are the players that rise £0.5m+ in price and keep going up (e.g. last season it was Pope, TAA, Lundstram, KDB, Vardy, Ings, but in previous seasons we have had Kane, Alli, AWB, Mahrez, Vardy, King, Wilson, Fraser, Jimenez, Doherty, Heaton etc)
      2) Choose a premium defence that will score points over the course of the season. That way you can focus on using your transfers to rotate the captaincy. Making defensive transfers is rarely worth it except where you are going on for the long term because you made a mistake in your original selection
      3) Rotate the big hitters in midfield and forward based on fixtures
      4) Have a lot of luck

I agree with all your points however I will personally be implementing those strategies on my WC1, which will be early, not my GW1 squad.
GW zero to GW wildcard1 is the perfect time to go all out jugular mode.

After GW2 Auba & Maddie > KDB & Greenwood (Kane > Aguero if not performing)

    McCarthy
    TAA VVD Doherty
    Salah Auba Maddie Armstrong ASM
    Kane Mitrovic

Nyland Vinagre Ferguson or Mitchell & Davis.

I like it, similar to mine. Although I don't have VVD and have Son instead of Maddison.

He's back up mate. Pep will never start two left footed CBs and I can't imagine him starting ahead of Laporte.

Looks likely City will bag other Silva (?), meaning Ake is 4th in pecking order.

Decent option. but i am going with Arnold+ 3 (4.5) Defenders + Ferguso.
Which i think most are doing since more funds are needed in attack this year

Might be unpopular but after Gameweek 2 and 3 I'm not sure If I would want a united asset that desperately. The palace and Brighton games are good but then 3 tough home games in the next 4.

Maybe but they'll score goals against those teams because they particularly do well when counter attacking.

Also they are top captaincy candidates in GW2 & 3 imo.

Prefer city asset from gameweek 3 tbh. Sterling is going to explode this year I think, barely being mentioned on here.

Auba will be my Gameweek 2 captain and will probably aim for a
city asset in Gameweek 3 for captaincy. Not sure if united will be able to counter attack against Arsenal and Spurs, they have canny managers who will sit back against them and look to frustrate imo.

United struggle when teams sit back....

Maybe I will eat my words if they hammer palace and Brighton!

So it's basically an option between KDB or Bruno. Those who are getting 2 prem mids will have to make the decision of going with one of them.

I think Bruno(c) or even Martial will be a good differential in GW2.

I could end up with both and Salah with my current set up, think its best to leave the option for 3 premium mids open.

Not sure about differential as it seems that loads will be benching them ready to go in gameweek 2, not a fan of that personally.

It works both ways. I can see alot of people booking 2-3 transfers already. Things change so fast in FPL that planned transfers will lead to a wildcard in no time.

Agreed its best not to book in too many transfers. Aubameyang for first 2 games and then make the switch to city is quite an easy pick though.

Personally I want to get to Gameweek 3 with 2 free transfers then I can assess which way I want to go, will be looking to attack the premiums to start the season and will wildcard into a more balanced squad with a better defence!

Definitely. Who knows how they will start. Credit due, they were great for FPL attacking assets after the re-start but with dweeby fake Brodgers in charge anything could happen. All it could take is Pogba telling them all on the players wattsapp group to down tools and they implode again.

Yeah they were great after the restart but they did have an insane run of games and loads of penalties and screamers from range...

I was worried by end of season performances as when the chips were down against Leicester and in Europa league they were reliant on winning penalties. Have been told by united fans that they have no seen a better squad since Fergie. On paper its a fair argument but I do think they will still struggle if teams sit back and they can't attack with pace

Thoughts on these options, currently set on keepers and defence.

    McCarthy / (Nyland)
    Trent / Virgil / Vinagre / (Mitchell / Taylor)

The first option gives me 0.5m in case of prices rises or to upgrade Stephens to Soucek.

Mo / Auba / Saint Max / Ziyech / (Stephens)
    Werner / Mitrovic / Antonio

    Or

    Mo / Auba / Jota / Ziyech / (Stephens)
    Werner / Mitrovic / Adams
