With the start of a new Premier League season moving ever closer, we switch our focus to Sky Sports Fantasy Football.

£50,000 is on offer to the game’s winner in 2021/22, with cash prizes of £5,000 and £1,000 dished out to those managers finishing in the other two podium places.

The fourth and fifth-placed managers are awarded games consoles, as are the highest-scoring Fantasy bosses of the month.

If you’re new to the Sky game or merely in need of a refresher of the rules and scoring system, we will go over the basics of the game in the article below.

FPL price reveal and launch reaction from three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser

HOW DO I PLAY?

TEAM SELECTION

Just like in Fantasy Premier League, managers select a team of players that will either earn attacking, defensive or bonus points in an attempt to score more than friends, colleagues and/or the rest of the world. However, this is not a squad-based game: you choose simply a starting XI and do not have a bench.

The budget, like in FPL, is £100m. There is no quota for players from the same club, however.

TRANSFERS

Game Weeks run from Friday to Thursday with managers allowed transfers in between Match Days, allowing the maximisation of potential points by bringing in an asset yet to play for one who has already been involved that week.

Instead of one free switch per Game Week as per FPL, the Sky Sports game allocates 40 transfers that can be used at any time during the season – with a limit of five in one Game Week – creating the need for a more long-term strategy.

CHIPS

‘Overhauls’ (the equivalent of Wildcards) are also available in Sky Sports, with two being allocated every season in specific periods.

CAPTAINCY

In the Sky Sports game, you can name more than one captain in a Game Week so long as the players in question are in action on different days. For example, if there were fixtures on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday in any given Game Week, a Sky Sports Fantasy manager could name a different skipper on each of those Match Days, providing they did so before that day’s deadline. Managers can also schedule their captains ahead of a Game Week, too.

HOW DO YOU SCORE POINTS?

The points structure is largely similar to FPL in Sky Sports Fantasy but tends to award more points for the actions mentioned below.

ActionPoints scored
Starting XI2
Substitution appearance1
Goal scored by a goalkeeper/defender7
Goal scored by a midfielder6
Goal scored by a striker5
Goal assist3
Clean sheet by a goalkeeper (must play 60+ mins)7
Clean sheet by a defender (must play 60+ mins)5
A penalty save by a goalkeeper5
Man of the Match3

CAN MY TEAM LOSE POINTS?

Unfortunately, just like in FPL there are a few ways to lose points too.

ActionPoints scored
Missing a penalty-3
Every goal conceded from the second goal onwards-1
Each yellow card-1
Each red card-3
Each own goal-2

HOW DO BONUS POINTS WORK?

Just like in FPL, there are additional points on offer for other events in matches – although the structure is slightly different, as you will see below:

Tier 1 ActionPoints scored
3 saves made (GK only)2
4 tackles won2
60 completed passes2
2 shots on target2
Tier 2 ActionPoints scored
5+ saves made (GK only)3
5+ tackles won3
70+ completed passes3
3+ shots on target3

head over to our Premium Members Area to see which players will potentially benefit from the Sky Sports bonus on offer for saves, tackles, passes and shots on target.

HOW DO I PLAY AGAINST MY FRIENDS?

There are a number of different ways to compete against others in the Sky Sports game. You can create or join a Free League with your friends and colleagues but there are ways to win money too.

Sky Sports can actually administer your money league for you to avoid any awkwardness post-season. You can choose the entry fee (either £2, £5, £10 or £20 per person) and the prize structure beforehand and Sky Sports will take care of the rest.

We have already set up our annual, free-to-enter Fantasy Football Scout mini-league, which you can enter by heading to the ‘Leagues’ tab and clicking ‘Join+’.

Is Sky Sports Fantasy Football only for Great Britan? Why wouldn’t Sky want people from other countries to play the game?

Because you can make a cash league. So it’s considered gambling.

You could move to the UK, but that's probably quite extreme just to play Sky FF.

Most likely unfortunately. Always looks lively and is a good player in general, just not a very good FPL asset. Too many assist of the assist which translates to no FPL points

How much do you want for 5.5?

Hendo got 116 points at just under 4ppg last time - that's a very tidy return for 5.5

4th best season value at Liverpool after the backs. 5th best season value of all teams in midfield

If Keita matches that or is better ...

Value is not the perfect metric. You need to consider how much more points is he giving you per million than a base midfielder (4.5m)

          Another argument is : Auba + Keita (230+120) =350
Werner and Ziyech( or any 2 mid/fwd in the 8-9, price range) could easily outscore 350!

Not arguing that Werner Ziyech might match total but any team early season needs something 5.5 and below.

Base midfielders don’t exist. Likely points in weeks 1-8 = 8 likely if you spot the right one 🙂

In isolation probably yes, but if you think about those who want to move quickly between big hitters (Auba, Salah, Mane, KDB, Bruno, Sterling ...) including captaincy, then it's different story. Not as straightforward as it looks.

Are you planning on playing both each week or rotating?

I went with two rotating 5ms a couple of seasons ago (Gelder Costa and Tom Cairney)

Was a disaster. Problem is neither was good enough to play and both were too expensive to bench. Really regretted it. Took a wildcard until I could sort it out.

At the risk of being a laughing stock - I would say Lallana. Feel like he will want to prove that he is worth more than his bench role in Pool. Had he been priced at 6.0 I would have considered him. Could hit the ground running though.

Definitely not, Sesse is likely to be rotated. Davies looks pretty nailed, he's the type of consistent defender Mou loves and plays for 38 matches and 90 minutes each. Unlikely he will get many attacking returns though.

It's a Mourinho second season team with a new DM and decent fixtures. I'm confident they'll keep clean sheets, so I've doubled up with Lloris and Davies.

The bloke scored 175 points in around 1900 minutes and I don't see any reason why he will get any less minutes.
I think he gets more minutes : Foden/Bilva who featured on the RW quite often , now have to fill Dilva's slot.

      On here, Jimenez.

The most reliable striker in the league for two seasons. Just set and forget and the points steadily tick in.

Amazing fixtures after first couple too. An easy pick at 8.5m, and one you'll probably want by GW5 when he's in the top three points scoring strikers by then.

Bottomed earlier. Do you think a 4.5 defender scores more than a 5.5 mid? Racking my brain over either going with

    A. Doherty + Bruno + 5.5 mid
    B. 4.5 def + Rashford + Ziyech

My thinking is that Bruno and Doherty likely score the same as Rashfors and Ziyech, so it comes down more so to the 4.5 def vs 5.5 mid. Any thoughts? Cheers!

I think the 4.5 def will score more. With the possible exception of Moutinho there is not a lot of 5.5 mids to look at. However I would pick A. Think Bruno and Doh will outscore Rash and Ziyech.

Maybe not the best use of a Wolves slot though.

A because if he stays healthy Doherty blows away pretty much any £5.5 mid you can get.

In my opinion the midfield spot is being overrated by people on here. After the £9m point the drop off in what you’re likely to get for genuine nailed on mids is quite severe.

I don’t see much difference between some of the £5-5.5m and the £7m mids.

To me you’re better off getting the cheapies and spend that money on premium defenders, who are going to score similar to what some of the premium mids will get you.

Has anyone looked at a 4-5-1 with two 4.5 bench strikers and starting four 4.5 defenders?

    McCarthy (Steer)
    Saliba-Vinagre-Manquillo-Justin
    Son-Aubameyang-Salah-Mane-ASM
    Werner (Brewster - Davis)

    Could Brewster be Sterling 2012?
In this idea people are going to go on about price points and no flexibility. But in two/three transfers with any of the three 12m in midfield can go anywhere you wish.

Not sure I will go with this myself. But if Brewster goes on loan I am tempted. I have not seen it in many RMT's

Yes, I am looking at 2 x 4.5 strikers myself as an option but it is dependant on Brewster getting a loan to another PL club.

      Wouldn't with 4 x 4.5 defenders though.

It would be more of a short term team as I do not see Liverpool keeping many clean sheets in the first few. And no 5m - 5.5 stands out to me as having a nice possible run of clean sheets. Spurs maybe..

But I still feel that it is too hard to ignore a rotation of Adams/Mitrovic to go with this formation of 4-5-1

The budget forwards are a lottery this season, slim pickings.

In fact, up to Richarlison @ 8.0 there is nothing screaming at you. Only from 8.5 can you start seeing decent regular returns.

LFC will be much better at the back with a fit Alisson from the start of the season. There is no way I would even go a cheap defence like that for 1 match.

But Ferguson is likely to start plus KWP is always another option loads of 4.5's. As I said people seem to forget that teams are not set in stone and strategic transfers can be made. .5 itb as well. I think many will be wildcarding gw3/4 in any case.

The reason you haven’t seen Brewster in RMTs is because he hasn’t been loaned. If he does then everyone’s Davis become Brewster, obvs.

Personally think part of FPL is identifying those players who are underpriced and so you can hold them for most of the season and they accumulate points at a rate above which you purchased them for. These are typically players who rise in value by more than £0.5m in the season and stay there (think of TAA, Ings, KDB last season)

This season I would consider the following in that potential pool:

Arsenal: Leno / Martinez (whoever is the starter), Saka
    Chelsea: Ziyech, Pulisic, Werner
    Everton: Keane
    Liverpool: TAA, VVD, Gomez
Man City: Laporte, Ake, Foden, Mahrez
Man Utd: AWB, Maguire, Greenwood, Fernandes, Martial
    Newcastle: Saint-Maximin
Southampton: McCarthy / Gunn (whoever is the starter), KWP, Armstrong
    Spurs: Aurier, Davies, Son
    Wolves: Vinagre, Boly, Traore
    West Ham: Soucek, Antonio

Lots of these will fall away because they won't end up being nailed (e.g. Vinagre, Saka, Foden, Ake), won't end up handling the PL (Ziyech, Werner), play for a poorer team and hence get sucked down (KWP, ASM, Soucek, Keane) etc., but hopefully it is a good starting point and gives people something to think about to make their own list.

Everton could do well if they sign the right players in 2-3 positions.

Thing with City defence is even they are now prone to rotation.
Not sure when Pep will learn that too much rotation doesn't work.

ASM will do well if Newcastle sign a striker

United need to sign a CDM

Keane feels £0.5m underpriced to me. He should be similar to Mina, but less than Digne. Everton can keep CS although they gave up towards the end of the season when they had nothing to play for.

Even with the 2x4m not playing, over the season those 3 will bag you a ton of points. Better to get a 4.5 (Vinny to start with) but not a disaster if you don't.

What are peoples thoughts on formation this season.
I've usually played 434 but last season used 352 a lot more.
Looking at the new season I'm tempted by 442 as I see a lot of value in defence with a big hitting midfield.
Not really liking the budget forwards for three up front.

I predict if anyone manages 4-3-4 they will win fpl! 😀

4-4-2 - 3-5-2 or 4-5-1 all decent options this year.
I am going 3-5-2 rotate Adams - Mitrovic

I focus on form & fixtures, not formation. I can have 3 or 4 at the back, 4 or 5 in midfield, 2 or 3 up front.

    (0.5 ITB)
    McCarthy Nyland
    TAA Doherty Vinagre Justin Ferguson

    McCarthy
    TAA - Dier - Vinagre
    Auba - Ziyech - H.Barnes - Armstrong - Keita

    Nyland - Justin - Ferguson - *Martial*

In fairness people raving about ziyech (could be changed to Greenwood either)
Kieta can chip in assists or goals.
Barnes capable of hot streaks nice fixtures
Dier definite spurs starter - ok fixtures

Doesn't fit into Ancelotti's system but was still often shoehorned in because of a lack of alternatives, was playing badly before that too, Everton fans seem to be completely sick of him from what I've seen.

Means he is going 4-4-2 having an OK team saving Greenwood for gw2 switching to 3-5-2

dshv has a decent keeper nice fixtures cheap:
              *Mccarthy*

Ok this defence maybe slightly risky (justin and vinagre). But even if one of them do not start Ferguson could start - so should give 4 defenders starting gw1.

              *Taa vinagre egan ferguson justin*

If Vinagre does not look likely to start Manquillo and KWP are viable alternatives

              *Salah son auba greenwood ASM*

Four starters in midfield and benching Greenwood gw1 means that it avoids potential price rise gw2/3 and leaves another transfer free if needed.

Has two starters up front to finish the 4-4-2 gw1
