It has never been more important for Fantasy Premier League managers to get their chip strategy right as we face more Blank and Double Gameweeks between now and the end of the 2020/21 season.

14 teams play twice in Double Gameweek 26 so the points-ceilings for a Wildcard, Free Hit, Triple Captain and Bench Boost are all higher than usual.

And, while preparing the biggest Double Gameweek of the season is very exciting, I still have half an eye on the tricky Blank Gameweeks in the months to come.

I have already used my Triple Captain chip in Double Gameweek 19 and my Bench Boost in Double Gameweek 24, so I am deploying my Wildcard in Double Gameweek 26 to focus on moving my cash back into the starting XI after spreading it out on bench players.

This was my squad at the end of Gameweek 25:

I want to move out my contingent of West Ham and Burnley players and focus more money on the starting XI for the remainder of the season.

This is how my Wildcard squad is currently shaping up;:

I have made a total of eight changes, which is on par for what I would expect with the second Wildcard. I could have possibly done without it but I saw it as an opportunity to restructure my squad for the long-term, and also for Blank Gameweek 29.

Like Blank Gameweek 18, I am struggling to see fixtures I want to attack here.

Brighton v Newcastle, on paper, looks like an appealing fixture for the Seagulls but they are such an unpredictable team. No team has had more shots than Brighton (106) over the last six Gameweeks but no team has scored fewer goals (four). I would find it difficult to back the likes of Neal Maupay (£6.1m) and any more than one defender would feel a bridge too far given Newcastle’s need for points.

Aston Villa’s form is on a downward trajectory while Tottenham Hotspur are not exactly setting the league alight with their attacking displays. It feels like a 1-1 kind of fixture and I can’t pick a clear winner here. I’m likely going to have Son Heung-min (£9.5m), Harry Kane (£11.1m) and Emiliano Martinez (£5.3m).

With West Ham v Arsenal, again, I am struggling to pick a clear winner here. West Ham are arguably the favourites given their form this season but again I don’t see a blowout win for either team.

Fulham v Leeds is the fixture I really like. I’d want Raphinha (£5.4m) and Patrick Bamford (£6.9m) for this one and possibly one of Ademola Lookman (£5.0m) or Josh Maja (£5.5m).

If I were to use my Free Hit in Gameweek 29, it would probably look something like this:

It hardly fills me with confidence, and we could see another 30-40 point week. I can’t even pick a captain I really like here. There are also quite a few attackers up against the defenders so again the point ceiling is low.

I think it could be a case of quality over quantity. With Son, Kane, Martinez and Ben White (£4.4m) already in the squad, I can focus on bringing in four players for GW29 (three FT+a hit) which would likely be Raphinha, Patrick Bamford, Michail Antonio (£6.5m) and maybe Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.4m), depending on Arsenal’s form. I’d rather have Jack Grealish (£7.6m) if he’s fit though.

What appeals to me here is that Leeds have Sheffield United in Gameweek 30, so I am happy to retain their attackers for the following week. Harvey Barnes (£6.7m) is an easy transition to Raphinha, given Barnes has a blank in 29 and then Manchester City in 30. Antonio has Wolves, which is not too bad. Aubameyang has Liverpool, which isn’t as stern a test as it used to be. Villa have Fulham in Gameweek 30 too.

When will I use my Free Hit?

Gameweek 33 is the week of the League Cup Final which means Spurs, Man City and their originally scheduled league opponents Southampton and Fulham have a missing fixture. The fixtures in 33 are far more appealing in terms of points potential.

The Villa v West Brom, Liverpool v Newcastle and Leicester v Crystal Palace fixtures appeal as does Leeds v Manchester United. I would feel much more comfortable loading up on assets from these teams for a Free Hit and I see more potential for a bigger score here. The ticker colour coding gives it away – there are way more blue fixtures in this week.

It is worth mentioning Spurs play Sheffield United in Gameweek 34, so this would let you retain their assets for that fixture. Spurs in general have a good fixture run between 27-30 (Palace, Arsenal, Villa, Newcastle) so I don’t mind holding their assets, despite their stuttering form. Man City have Palace away too in 34.

Also, there is a small chance that the pending Spurs v Southampton fixture goes to Gameweek 32, if Man City beat Everton in the FA Cup. If that is the case, Spurs having a double in 32 and a blank in 33 would make things tricky to navigate without the Free Hit in 33.

Conclusion

A lot could change between now and Gameweek 29, but I am not seeing the upside in a Gameweek 29 Free Hit at the moment. Getting the right six-to-seven players should be enough to keep up with those who do use their Free Hit, as we saw in Gameweek 18.

We have covered Free Hit strategy as well as Double Gameweek 26 extensively in this week’s edition of The FPL Wire (https://youtu.be/xP3DuM_MFPM) where Lateriser and I are joined by fellow Pro Pundit Tom Freeman. I highly recommend a listen to get you prepped for the biggest double gameweek ever.

Good luck and hope you enjoyed reading.

Thanks for this. FH29 does not inspire confidence as you mention. Couple of thoughts

      - Have you considered not having Son and getting two defenders like Digne and Pereira (and one City defender) on the WC in a 4-4-2 and leaving a possibility of a Bruno to City mid (KDB) move in GW27 for a possible TC?

      - You will have to use one of your FTs in GW28. It is a gameweek where you wouldnt want Leeds assets and would have to keep DCL and Barnes as well.

I strongly believe that the city defenders are the best value assets in the game , city are not blowing teams away in an attacking sense so I don't want to spend more than 6m odd (gundo price) on their attackers.

I'm still hoping on dgw 28 which would make the transfer easy but if that's not the case I'll do the DCL to bamford move that week, Leeds can score against anyone

It's useful as usual. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. FH33 looks pretty more interesting than FH29 really.

I have 5 to play in BGW29 now. With 3 FTs and probably a hit, I could easily have 8-9 players for that week and it should be enough to prevent big red arrow.

I am on wc too and my team is about 80-90% similar.

Only difference I will carry 4-5 eve/avl players to attack possible DGW28 (maybe will use BB)

They benched castagne, perreira and Barnes which didn't help their goal threat. On the plus side they now will have a weeks rest between matches (after the dgw) so that can only be a positive

Interesting tactic, but I'm not sure I like it. I think we all agree the WC is the most powerful chip so why would you compromise it in order to avoid using the Free Hit. It feels like with this strategy you are making the best team for a DGW, then slowly destroying it over the next few weeks in order to make a team for what we both agree is a substandard GW. You cannot properly attack gameweeks 27 & 28 due to the trade off between bringing in BGW players over good players. You will still have a make do BGW team compared to the FH'ers (that may not be a major points difference but I think you will possible drop points that week). Then spend more time removing the bad BGW players over the following weeks including losing 1 transfer to use a FH. In the end your team will look nothing like your lovely original wildcard team and you have failed to properly attack every gameweek apart from GW26 & 33.

Do you think FH33 is going to be that big of a points swing? I don't know about you but it feels like you won't be able to fully utilise the WC. Making a WC team for the next 8 or so weeks and ignoring the BW is simple but I think the best way to use the WC.

Got that team for a hit, GTG?

    Maybe DCL TC punt?

    Or play Bam over Raph?

    Kane/DCL

    Martin/Bamford/Dallas/Coufal

This looks like a good wildcard with lots of small changes rather than huge, drastic ones for the sake of it.

People going with Salah in their wildcards, are you not worried about the effect on Liverpool of not having Henderson? That doesn’t seem to be talked about a lot.

I’m considering dropping Salah and bringing De Bruyne in on my wildcard.

Henderson impact is huge so yes. SHU missing 3 CBS, and Chelsea is breachable. Decent run arter and easy swap to auba or son in 29. Keb costs double of cancelo, foden, gundo, dias. I like the idea of 3 City assets for 18million.

A - Ings & Bednarek to Watkins and Digne
B - Ings, Sterling and Bednarek to Kane (TC), Barnes and Cancelo or Digne -4.

    Martinez
    Dallas, Dias, Bednarek
    Salah, Bruno, Sterling , Gundo
    DCL, Bamford, Ings

    Pope, Lowton, Coufal , Soucek

In order to do Bamford -> DCL (-4),I need to do Robertson -> Any defender (-4)

    1) Is the hit worth it?

    2) Best defender to bring in? Digne or Pereira?

Could pay off. DCL does hit gold from time to time.
Robertson to another cheaper DGW defender is a no brainer. They are woeful at the back -and there are excellent midfielders doing more for that price (barnes etc).

A)this ones easy: coufal and rudiger
      B) This is a tough one. Given his form and the potential banana skins of fixtures, with both matches involving decent defences, I’d say no. I went so far as to not bring him in for this gameweek. Up until a week ago he was a shoe in and money was not object, but decided to swap Ings and lowton for DCL and Digne instead. My current options for TC are DCL (given Everton’s fixtures), Salah (first game vs Sheffield who’s defence is missing main three centre halves) and Bruno (he has form massively on his side, plus they play Palace). I also have Sterling who would be tempting were it not for Pep roulette
and kdb and aguero coming back. I think City will start exploding again when aguero and kdb start regularly

On a WC and may bench boost in 27 or 28... which do you prefer below?

    Current team (playing BB):

    Martinez/McCarthy
    Dias/Cancelo/Shaw/Rudiger/Dallas
    Salah/Bruno/Gundo/Barnes/Raphinha
    Kane/DCL/Bamford

Any obvious moves? I’m considering another keeper, Digne, H Barnes & Watkins. I’m not too fussed about hits as it’s a DGW.

    Captaincy options breakdown...

Bruno: facing a Palace side that is back to basics and prioritising locking down their defence, then a Chelsea side which has been the best team in the league defensively since Tuchel has arrived.

Kane/Son: Spurs are out of form and the squad is struggling with fixture congestion. They will definitely be seeing out a 1-0 win, so if Kane/Son aren’t involved in the first goal then they most likely blank.

City assets: not a option unless you’re looking at Ederson, though he does have a pretty low ceiling. Going to be a SGW for most City assets this week so it’s a no go for me.

DCL: Everton side is back to full strength for the first time in a long time. Soton by far the worst team in the league defensively in the last 6 games, and Digne will be abusing that left flank with KWP injured, will be crosses galore for DCL. Low block West Brom side is also good news and suits DCL.

Conclusion, DCL is your man. Thank me later 😉

I was leaning this way, hard to ignore those two fixtures for Everton... but, we've been awful at home (SOU) to weaker teams this season. We don't have a way to fire up the motors the same way we do against tougher oppositon when we can break with pace on the flanks. WBA is the sort of game that looks like a banker but Sam could frustrate and they nick something.

Allan fit again does change this mind you. It was a walkover a few times earlier in the season when Him Doucoure + Gomes were all firing.

Bruno still edges it for me. He's just so captainable. They'll be too strong for Palace. Pens is a good margin too over DCL - Man U get a good few — and he can knock in a worldy against any team regardless Tuchel.

Maddison might not be out. I still think Vardy does Vardy regardless. It's not a Son/Kane scenario - Vardy does what he does. When fit, he's usually in my team pissing off my ML rivals.

The more I think about it, the more I think it's HAS to be the week for the TC dice roll.

      Salah *
      Bruno *
      DCL *
      Kane / Son *
      Vardy *
      Gundo * / Sterling

Getting the TC right (or wrong) on any of these players is going to upturn mini leagues and see massive green (or red) arrows. (*I have starred players.)

For me it's between DCL (SOU/wba) or Bruno (che/cpl). I'm likely to throw it all on Blue tonight — it's been a poetic season for Everton, at times, and DCL is in for the Golden boot. A pair of goals + assist + 3-4 baps not unimaginable. Note: I've not that much to lose as I'm 45pts off runaway ML leader who's flirting with 10k.

Considering TC or BB. Have wc but no FH.

    A) Ings to DCL for free
    2) Ings, son and Antonio-> Kane, Barnes and Dcl (-8)

    Current:
    Pope Martinez
    Stones Mee Coufal Cancelo Dallas
    Salah Bruno Son Gundo Raph
    Bamford Antonio Ings

    1Ft 1,9 ITb

    Cheers for any thoughts!

    So think I’m going with

    Johnstone
    Dallas/Dias/targett
    Salah/son/Bruno/Barnes/gundogan
    Kane/bamford

Am I right to TC Kane and go for it?

Is Triple Captain DCL worth a shot?

Just not that confident with Bruno or Son at this point, and can see Sterling only playing one of the games

If i wasnt using my free hit i would definitely be considering it. with everton hitting form again and a poor defence in Southampton & WBA i expect a big point haul

Finally one of the Pros mentions FH33 > FH29. I was with "them" keeping it quiet for so long, there was some sort of conspiracy going on.

Still undecided whether to FH or WC.
    This is my current team:
    Martinez (Johnstone)
Coufal - Stones - Cancelo (Dallas Coufal)
Son - Bruno - Sterling - Barnes (Raphinha)
    Bamford - Cavani - Antonio

    What would you with it?
    1) WC now to the team below with BGW29 in mind, FH in GW33
    Martinez (Fabri)
Stones- Cancelo - Shaw (Burn, Strujik)
Gundo - Salah - Bruno - Barnes -Son
    Dcl - Kane (Maja)

    2) FH to this team, WC in GW31
    Ederson
    Dias -Pereira- Shaw
    Gundo - Salah -Bruno -Barnes
    Kane - Dcl - Watkins
    Subs: Fabri, Burn, Mitchell, 4.4mid

    1) Areola or Johnstone for dgw26 only? Won't play them again till wc31

    2) Take out Lowton or Dallas >> Konsa (-4) for BB26? Taking out dallas gives me an extra doubler but means one less player for bgw29. Taking out Lowton is a bit sideways but means an extra gw29 player

Thinking of doing Bamford to either A) DCL -4
    B) Richarlison -4.

What do you reckon? Or should I just keep Bamford?

    Anything else worth a -4? 2.0ITB

    On BB

    Areola Martinez
    Shaw Cancelo Stones Digne Rudiger
    Bruno Gundogan Son Barnes Raphinha*
    Kane DCL Bamford*

    On BB, 1FT, 0ITB
    Martinez/Areola
    Cancelo/shaw/pereira/taylor/rudiger
    KDB/Bruno/Son/Raph/Reed
    Kane/Bam/Watkins
The lack of gundo is scary with 2 DGW.
    Should i do
    a) -4 for rap+bam > Gundo+Maja
    b) -4 for rap+shaw > Gundo+El Mohamady
    c) just keep the FT and live without Gundo for another week
    d) maybe try a punt with Raph>Pereira(West Brom)

Anyone recall what happened last season when Maddison got injured? Was that when their poor run happened? Or am I completely misremembering?
