It’s been just over a fortnight since our last scan of the highest-owned players in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Here we take another look at how ownership levels are changing across the four Fantasy positions to see who is in vogue and who is falling out of favour.

We’ll again stress the caveat that the ownership figures of some players at certain price points (eg £5.5m defenders, £7.0m midfielders, £8.0m forwards etc) may be inflated due to being ‘auto-pick’ selections.

We’d expect these percentages to continue to drop between now and Gameweek 1 and we’ll see how those figures are doing again ahead of the start of 2021/22.

GOALKEEPERS

Meslier5.01095.7%-0.2%

Jordan Pickford (£5.0m) and Kasper Schmeichel (£5.0m) are the big movers from last time, each rising over 2.0% in the ownership stakes.

It’d be interesting to see just when their ascent in popularity began: the achievements of England and Denmark at EURO 2020 could well have something to do with it, given that the pair enjoyed a summer in the spotlight.

Everton and Leicester ranking fairly high in our Season Ticker in Gameweeks 1-6 are also upsides to the mid-priced duo.

Robert Sanchez (£4.5m) remains the second most-owned shot-stopper and still sits in more than one in four FPL squads, although his numbers have dropped slightly.

Brighton’s injury concerns at the back and the potential loss of Ben White (£4.5m) to Arsenal are possible factors, there.

DEFENDERS

Manquillo4.0121612.7%+2.4%

Luke Shaw (£5.5m) continues to climb in popularity and now trails only Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) in the ownership stakes across all positions.

The rise in demand has no doubt been influenced by his performances at EURO 2020, where he racked up four clean sheets and as many attacking returns.

But it’s that involvement at the European Championship which also causes concern: he won’t return to training at Manchester United until the beginning of August and is also recovering from broken ribs, although is confident of being available for Gameweek 1.

Liverpool’s two full-backs have experienced modest increases in popularity amid the falls elsewhere, with even Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) on the up outside of the top ten (8.8% to 9.8%).

The orange flag appearing next to Tariq Lamptey‘s (£4.5m) name hasn’t done the Brighton wing-back any favours but there was a shift underway anyway in the budget defender bracket.

Lamptey and Wesley Fofana (£4.5m) have suffered drops in popularity, with Ben White (£4.5m) and Javier Manquillo (£4.0m) on the rise: the former’s protracted move to Arsenal has brought him to public attention, while Manquillo’s improving ownership figure – despite zero pre-season involvement – suggests an increasing number of us are happy to plump for a non-playing fifth defender.

MIDFIELDERS

Son Heung-min (£10.0m) is the only midfielder in the top ten who has increased his ownership percentage figure, with his starring, ‘out of position’ role in Spurs’ pre-season win over Colchester United no doubt a contributing factor.

Emiliano Buendia (£6.5m) lurks just outside the top ten after experiencing a climb in popularity, with his own brace of assists in Aston Villa’s victory at Walsall increasing the momentum behind a move for the Argentine.

The fall in the bulk of the most-owned midfielders’ ownerships may well owe a lot to the arrival of Jadon Sancho (£9.5m).

The former Borussia Dortmund winger already sits in 10.6% of Fantasy squads despite only being priced up five days before this article went out.

He is now the 16th most-owned midfielder in the game.

Elsewhere, Billy Gilmour’s (£4.5m) ownership is up from 5.8% to 8.8% and Emile Smith Rowe (£5.5m) has climbed a couple of percentage points to 7.4% to reach the fringes of the top 20 most-popular midfield options.

FORWARDS

Perhaps the most headline-grabbing market move in this piece is the deposing of Ivan Toney (£6.5m) as the top dog in the forwards’ ownership race.

Toney still sits in just under one in three FPL squads but Ollie Watkins (£7.5m) has crept past him, with his brace against Walsall and Villa’s capture of another chance-creating playmaker in the form of Buendia perhaps influencing that.

Harry Kane (£12.5m) has consolidated third spot after some previous neck-and-neck competition with Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.0m), with those persistent rumours surrounding a move to Manchester City capturing some of our imaginations.

Again, like Shaw, Kane is another one whose rise in popularity comes in spite of some uncertainty over his Gameweek 1 availability.

It’s a fairly quiet picture elsewhere with little movement among the most popular forwards but Kelechi Iheanacho (£7.5m) has become less in demand, with unease over a potential deeper role and indeed the rotation risk that comes with Leicester having a fatter, fitter squad; Patson Daka (£7.5m) has arrived at the King Power this summer and the previously injured Harvey Barnes (£7.0m) is nearing a return.

It's good, very solid. When you want to drop Targett GW4-5, White steps up with easy games. It works.

I hope White will be in Arsenal to make easy , its either Ayling or White for me. If white stay in brighton , will switch to Ayling before deadline.

Morning. Been playing around I've somehow found a team I don't hate with 1.0M left over
Things will obviously change but with this loose structure-

    Sanchez
    TAA Dias Coufal
    Salah Raphina Bruno Buendia
    Toney Wilson Watkins

    4.0 Cody Brownhill 4.0
    1.0 M ITB

    Sanchez to Henderson? Leaves 0.5M
    Coufal to Shaw? Leave 0.5
    Dias to Robertson? Leaves 0
Happy to have one dead spot 4.0 def
    Cody could be any 4.5
Sanchez could be the WAT GK
Loose plan of Bunedia to Saka/ Leeds mid when fixtures turn
Wavering on Wilson but want to be a little different
Have I spent too much in def with so many 'good' 4.5 defenders about?

Any general thoughts really welcome, would love to be able to keep a little in the bank for once to ride out early price changes (wont happen!)

    Thanks for any thoughts

I'd say it's a very good squad. I agree with Coady to Shaw. It means come GW4 and Villa's bad fixtures, you can bench one and sell the other if you feel so inclined.

Cheers, hadnt seen this move. Think I will still then make Coufal a 4.5 as think there is value there. Will leave 0.5 ITB

That's a good idea. 0.5 itb helps you catch that bandwagon who's already risen 0.1 in price.
I have an eye on Ait-Nouri. Same price as Coady but could get attacking returns if nailed.

      Nice team

Dubious about Dias with that low ceiling of his and would back either James or Chilwell to match him if you intend to hold for any length of time and have cover at the back. Chelsea to get cs in red fixtures? I think so.

Leicester and Arsenal had the same number of clean sheets last season, I think. So there's nothing to choose between Fofana and White. What slightly edges it for me is Euros for Leicester and no extra games for Arsenal.

Don't ever count on an Arsenal defensive asset for clean sheet points. Save yourself the headache. I'm happy to be wrong, but i bet Leicester has the better D this season.

As well as adding White, Partey will be starting the season - he should screen the defence alright. Easy to jump off a 4.5 if I'm wrong, but I'm minded that other than GW2-3 when Ayling plays, Arsenal have an easy opening set of fixtures.

Coufal to Chilwell would appeal. If I did that I would move one of the 4.5s to a 4.0 if you can use the 0.5

Will likely have a similar sort of dilemma here when I set up

Right now I'm thinking to hold off over-investment in defence and ideally keep 0.5 itb. All the big defences are a tad unpredictable from the evidence of the last 2/3 seasons and run hot and cold rather than consistent through the season.

My thought is to wait and see which starts to fore early and on hop on then rather than commit early.

I'm also wondering whether it will be easier to move money back from a mid priced mid than start with a (extra) 5.5/6.0 type at the back. You can reach any defender you want from a mid-priced attacker including VVD/Robbo.

Set it up last season - about 40 entrants. Around 50% in and around top 100k and a smattering in top 10k.

Devised to be for people without fantastic records but I won't be booting people out if they have actually made the top 10k already. Had fun tracking how people coped with triumph and disaster.

Hoping Kane Joins City I found a new template I like very much.

      Pickford
      TAA, Digne, Shaw
      Salah, Raphina, Buendia, Bowen
      Kane, Antonio, Watkins

      Foster, White, Manquillo, Bissouma

I know midfielders might be a gamble but could be a jackpot...

You just mistimed it last season mate

It's all very well having a sprint finish in your locker but you need to be on the shoulder coming into the straight and not boxed in back in the bunch.

I've dropped Bruno for Sancho. It's a risk of course, but with Salah dominating the captaincy most weeks, Bruno isn't needed for that. Son fills in GW3 very nicely though. Until Kane does his thing, I'm happy with just the one premium (over 10M) player for now.

I see. I am toying with a 532 that can be 442 at times.
It does become difficult though to jump on to bamdwagons in attack.
Also there arent many cs in the earlier stages. Thats what is putting me off.
But i fully expect someone like Cancelo/Digne/Shaw to outscore a 6.5 mid that i would pick.

It might be better to go big 5 later on rather than from the off. Teams like City are liable to go on long winning/CS streaks once they get up a head of steam.

Exactly the same. It's the last major decision i have. Not comfortable going without a Pool premium wingback wizard, so that and Bruno and Son is a bridge too far for my defense.

Not considering for the time...got burned too many times with moves like that.
Not making my decisions on "wishful thinking" any more. Proven results only.
For the time I'm sticking with Bruno, whom I'll happily sell for Sancho, Son or likes with the cash to spare - if he doesn't meet expectations of course.

        Start and nailed.
No one wants a premium keeper or striker (until Kane moves), so that leaves enough money for a strong defence and midfield. A decent 4 is quite straightforward. 5 does require some sacrifice elsewhere.

Looking through that week 1 fixture here - minimal preseason for City after Euros and it's been a while since they were bomb proof.

I do have a route to Son alongside Mo and Bruno but clearly Alli is less of a commitment and easier to slot in and has definite upside (from memory).

I’m happy to wait on Nacho for the time being, but he’s an easy move if I want him.
Saying that he’ll probably grab a brace in the Comm Shield and we’ll all have him. 😉

Seems good.. I would've personally liked to beef up that defense a bit. RAN is not nailed, which leaves you with 3 playing Def. West Ham might be stretched with Europe this season

Mahrez in a two man midfield a step too far for me

Actually started with Soucek as a third mid last season in a de facto midfield two and that would have turned out fine had I held through week 3 and short term I think a light midfield can work in principle but with Raph/Buendia/Bowen available I don't see the logic this season.

Still going through options at the cheap end of the scale.

Fraser? Same price point as ESR. If he's nailed is he equally viable as ESR? Has FPL record and the Wilson connection. Willock I suppose is the one with the recent record but is an inconvenient 6.0.

(Have now written off Mbeumo as my other option there )

Depends on formation deployed by Bruce. If he plays 4 at the back then I think Fraser could be a shout at that price if he stays fit.

I think Smith-Rowe is the safest one to start with a decent GW1 fixture and then can be benched for a couple of GWs and you can assess other options. A few decent 4.5 defs he can be rotated with.

My first draft.. Any areas for improvement?

    Meslier.
    TAA. Digne. Cresswell.
    Salah(c). Bruno. Buendia. Raphinha.
    Watkins. Wilson. Toney.

    Foster. Lowton. Holding. Gibbs-White. 0itb. 0fts.

Will monitor returning defenders like Shaw/Stones/CHE.
All defenders are proven, on all set pieces, great fixtures, nailed.
    5 pen takers.
Creative midfield that will tick over consistently.

Fabrizio: "Arsenal always had clear position regarding Martin Ødegaard. He’s always been considered the main target as number 10 - also if ‘complicated’. #AFC ...but if Real Madrid decide to let Ødegaard leave, Arsenal will be ready to make a proposal to sign Martin on permanent deal."

Sounds like it's unlikely to happen but not impossible, if it did then this will naturally have a big effect on ESR's viability

Come transfer deadline day and it's clear to Odegaard that he won't be in Real's first team, he'll return. That'll likely be after GW1

    Here we go - GW1

    GK Sanchez
    DEF TAA, Fofana, Williams, Digne
    MID Sancho, KDB, Salah
    FWD Antonio, Toney, Watkins

    Subs (Foster, ESR, White(Arsenal), Brownhill

    0 in bank

    Thoughts

Williams (Man Utd) could play GW1 and get a price rise

Mahrez is popular but a transfer waiting to happen so KDB safer?

Is Brownhill a price drop waiting to happen if he's the popular 4.5 mid?

    Card subject to change!

Williams could be good but you will need a way out taking up a United slot.
Mahrez will be good for the first few weeks IMO but it will be temporary with Pep roulette.

Yes, I couldn't fit in a fourth midfielder among this group

Considered the following but rejected based on fixtures/ fitness/ expectations
Son, Fraser, Raphinha - fixture, Buendia (assists only , lesser goal threat - pls correct me if I'm wrong), Smith Rowe, Mahrez, Gundogan, Pepe (Arsenal not looking convincing, rotation with Willian, he's not on penalties either), kdb, Mane (salah better), Sarr (missing chances pre season, promoted team, risky), sancho - new, Harrison - fixture,

Hence thought of a stable defender as a safer option. Coufal/robertson have assist potential and good fixtures too - can rival any of the above midfielders in my opinion.

        What do you say?

Thanks @andy_social - can you point out some areas of improvement?

Cavani - I agree, and I hope he does start. I have seen this happen with Man Utd that we prefer to start experienced strikers who have quality - Ibra, rvp and now Cavani. Plus the #7 shirt and finish to last season are tempting for a player o his quality. Rashford's surgery may also mean Greenwood plays on the flank

        1. Andy_Social
          • 14 Years
          5 years, 27 days ago

Cavani is terrific if he starts, but might be rotated or come on as a sub. Probably he's fine, but it's a risk, and if you take risks you need better bench back-up.

So you could go obne of two ways - change Cavani for DCL, Bamford or another 7.5 and strengthen elsewhere, or keep Cavani and make another tweak or two.
Trossard - Brighton were great defensively but awful attacking last season. Don't see much change. For the same money, Buendia and Raphinha are so much better. Trossard has easier opening fixtures but I don't see him outscoring the other 2.
Your subs are 2 midfielders who'll never score more than 2-3 points and a non-playing defender. I might let Coufal go to have 3x4.5 defenders who rotate well so one or even two can step up if one of your Starting XI goes awol.
The other option that a lot including myself are doing is Bruno > Sancho. That 2.5 m can make a lot of difference. It would give you considerable midfield back up (good 3rd/4th mids)

      Good, solid, BUT....

Check Bissouma is still first team. It looked like he was leaving but then Brighton got silly money for White. Not sure if that means Bissou still starts or not.

Arsenal have very nice fixtures except GW2 and 3. Having both White and ESR with Bissou and non-playing Manq is risky imo.

Yeah, get him when I WC. Alternatively, do Bruno + an attacker to Kane + £7.5-£8.5 mid. Historically, Kane needs a couple of games to light it up at the beginning of the season, so not too bothered. He didn't last season, but I attribute that to a good rest. This time around I feel he may need a few games after the Euros to get to 100%

Based on opposition/fixtures. That early on - this is the only thing I think you should focus on, given that there is no "form" to speak of. All vastly dependant on the defence in front of them. Raya/Bachmann are pretty tied at the top of that list.

Sanchez is definitely the best £4.5 GK imo.

I would love to get Meslier as I think he would be great value this season.

Southampton are just as likely to get their net ripped. All £4.5 GK are a bit meh this season. Sanchez arguably the best choice of the bunch.

        Guaita fit

Hennessey now at Burnley iirc with Butland the second keeper who is so far very much second choice but perhaps some danger but likely when only things go wrong

Saves probable anyway. He had a horrid XGC last season but reading around that is a deeply unreliable stat and in his case probably predicated on being behind 4th and 5th choice CBs almost the whole season. Both fans and players picked Guaita as player of the season last time and that is an indication of his real life worth.

Stretch to ignore Sanchez for him of course.

Oh yeh, sorry. It's Pope who's not fit. 4.5 Hennessy to start at Burnley. Still to be avoided though!

    What is a better combo?

    a) Sancho and Son

    b) Bruno and Maddison (or another 7m)

I would rather Bruno + Raphina and use £0.5 elsewhere.

Difficult to predict how much A will score. We don't know how quickly Sancho will settle in. Son is a proven beast though.

      How about Bruno + Alli?
Alli seems getting minute and Nuno love him. Why not? (Haaland tone)
