Who are the best FPL captain options for Gameweek 1?

Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers face a number of selection dilemmas as they put the finishing touches to their squads ahead of tonight’s 18:30 BST deadline, one of which, of course, concerns who to captain.

While one, all-too-familiar name leaps out as the leading candidate for the armband this week, there are other FPL assets whose cases deserve examining.

First, we will assess the fallout of the Gameweek 1 captain poll, then analyse the leading candidates and Rate My Team (RMT) ratings ahead of this evening’s curtain-raiser in Brentford.

THE CAPTAIN POLL

As you can see from the current results, Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) is the runaway leader of the Gameweek 1 captain poll. The Egyptian midfielder has accumulated 61.95% of total votes from our users at the time of writing.

Only one other player has garnered more than 10% of votes at this stage, with Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) currently in second place, backed by 14.68% of users.

There is also a surprise inclusion, as Ivan Toney (£6.5m) occupies third place with 4.62% of votes, with Sadio Mané (£12.0m) and Kai Havertz (£8.5m) just behind the Brentford forward.

      You will be told your bench is too strong. With Barnes, Tsimikas, Grealish and Buendia question marks I disagree.

        Thanks, keeping my options open. Things I keep telling myself:
        Buendia been declared available, Barnes should start (not expecting him to last a full game). Grealish should play but can still do damage from the bench. Tsimikas is a gift if it pays off.

          I'd suggest to make a team for only 3 gameweeks as there is a very strong chance you might end up playing the wildcard after that as lots of scenarios occur and gems appear...hence it's no point keeping all that money in the bench...you can easily upgrade to Bruno / Son with that money

            I tend to play the wildcard later and bank a transfer to play a mini WC. Happy to go without Bruno for now and Son i'm monitoring (easy enough to upgrade him with the money itb). I just like to keep the options open for the start of the season.

      I was thinking of a bench boost too, but I'd save it up for double gameweeks....it happens at least 3 to 4 times in a season with Fa and carabao cup....so good option to play the WC during IB, but as far as the other chips are concerned I'd save them if I had the choice and put out a weaker bench and strong main 11

      Almost the same as my BB team. So much rotation these days I struggled to use it the whole of last season. The risk is that if the stars align, a WC/BB combo might present itself later in the season for big points. Also not guaranteed all will start of course

        Given the expensive striker options in the shape of Lukaku and Kane that will be arriving very soon the chances of being able to get a full team of 15 decent playing assets later in the season is very remote so I am also BB this gameweek for the first time.

    What's the worst-case scenario for every member of your GW1 squad? Does this scenario necessitate a transfer, or can you roll?

    Some things are far from worst-case scenarios, like a blank. Don't sell a 6-GW-fixture-run asset because he blanked in GW1. Especially Toney. Toney vs Palace, Gundo/Mahrez vs Norwich in GW2 can quickly bite a jerked knee

    If you need a mental anchor to hold those knees, remember this from last season: Bamford "missed too many clear chances" in GW1 to keep Rodrygo out of the team long-term. Spurs "looked horrible" in GW1
