Who are the best FPL captain options for Gameweek 1?

Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers face a number of selection dilemmas as they put the finishing touches to their squads ahead of tonight’s 18:30 BST deadline, one of which, of course, concerns who to captain.

While one, all-too-familiar name leaps out as the leading candidate for the armband this week, there are other FPL assets whose cases deserve examining.

First, we will assess the fallout of the Gameweek 1 captain poll, then analyse the leading candidates and Rate My Team (RMT) ratings ahead of this evening’s curtain-raiser in Brentford.

THE CAPTAIN POLL

As you can see from the current results, Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) is the runaway leader of the Gameweek 1 captain poll. The Egyptian midfielder has accumulated 61.95% of total votes from our users at the time of writing.

Only one other player has garnered more than 10% of votes at this stage, with Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) currently in second place, backed by 14.68% of users.

There is also a surprise inclusion, as Ivan Toney (£6.5m) occupies third place with 4.62% of votes, with Sadio Mané (£12.0m) and Kai Havertz (£8.5m) just behind the Brentford forward.

      I had something similar but I really do feel this Tsimikas / Amartey is a disaster waiting to happen.

      If they aren't playing and another of your defenders gets injured/out of favour then you're going to have to waste transfers to get rid of one of tsimi/amartey.

        ESR likes to float wide (left and right) so Odegaard would likely be the 10 most weeks in that formation, with ESR competing with him as well as Saka, Pepe, Willian, Aubameyang, Martinelli, Nelson for 3 spots. Although it's more like ESR, Pepe and Saka competing for 2 positions (Auba and Laca competing for 1).

      I wonder about Ayling as a bench option. He is a good choice, but he will take a Leeds spot. I think 2 Leeds attackers will be in most teams at some point soon. I think having Ayling on the bench restricts getting a 3rd Leeds player of choice, but maybe you choose Ayling anyway.
      The rest of the team has a nice balance.

      Watkins is an injury doubt.

      No Salah is high risk bit you have Mane. Prefer to see Salah in there esp as he is on pens etc.

        Mane I think will hit the ground running. only owned by 4.5% so could be a big differential. He's banged goals in pre-season and will be hungry to avenge what he sees as a poor season last year. I don't see it as that big a gamble but I can see why you'd say so.
