Who are the best FPL captain options for Gameweek 1?

Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers face a number of selection dilemmas as they put the finishing touches to their squads ahead of tonight’s 18:30 BST deadline, one of which, of course, concerns who to captain.

While one, all-too-familiar name leaps out as the leading candidate for the armband this week, there are other FPL assets whose cases deserve examining.

First, we will assess the fallout of the Gameweek 1 captain poll, then analyse the leading candidates and Rate My Team (RMT) ratings ahead of this evening’s curtain-raiser in Brentford.

THE CAPTAIN POLL

As you can see from the current results, Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) is the runaway leader of the Gameweek 1 captain poll. The Egyptian midfielder has accumulated 61.95% of total votes from our users at the time of writing.

Only one other player has garnered more than 10% of votes at this stage, with Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) currently in second place, backed by 14.68% of users.

There is also a surprise inclusion, as Ivan Toney (£6.5m) occupies third place with 4.62% of votes, with Sadio Mané (£12.0m) and Kai Havertz (£8.5m) just behind the Brentford forward.

      Makes no difference really, avoid blocking yourself out of three players from any team but I don't think these two make that an issue

    Trying to keep some money ITB to add Lukaku in a few weeks with minimal transfers and potentially keep Bruno, Shaw, Salah and TAA.

    Sanchez - Steele
    Shaw - TAA - Tsimikas - Ayling - ?
    Salah - Bruno - Raphinha - Benrahma - Brownhill
    Ings - Antonio - Toney

    2M ITB. 5th DEF options:

    Coufal would allow Toney + Ings > Lukaku + 4.5 (with a few weeks of data)
    Veltman would allow the same from Toney + Antonio (or Ings and a spare 0.5)

    Obviously price changes may affect this, but how do those options sound?

    Finding an extra 1m somewhere would allow similar for Kane.

    Just heard Arteta say that a lot will 'probably a lot of things will happen in the last week or so'. Of course, it doesn't mean a whole lot. It could be to appease the outside world, but it suggests the intention is to make transfers.

    I've seen suggested elsewhere that Arsenal and many teams are biding their time as a means to save money when opportunities arise rather than blow all their money early on. Tets also said, 'the ball starts to roll in a different speed in the last week or so'.

    ESR is still going to be a great option, regardless, but I would say his minutes are the most under threat. Anticlimax almost guaranteed, though...

    A) Benramha, Obafemi + 0.5
    B) Gilmour, Toney

    Pros with A is flexibility with 0.5 for say one of Greenwood -> Grealish, Benrahma -> Raphinha or Omo/Tsi -> 4.5. Also more appealing mids to swap around in the mid price bracket

    Pros with B is Gilmour over Obafemi and less risk of ending up with 3 non-playing subs (although 0.5 ITB can fix that in A)
