Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) and Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) scored a combined 37 points on Saturday as the two 50%+ owned Fantasy Premier League (FPL) midfielders started the 2021/22 campaign with a bang.

Our usual Scout Notes will follow for all of today’s games but in the meantime, our long-dormant Scoreboard series – a ‘Match of the Day’-style, condensed recap of the day’s action – rounds up the key goings-on.

Many of the graphics below are taken from LiveFPL, Ragabolly’s excellent and ever-expanding website that has spawned many imitators – not least FPL themselves, who have begun updating ranks after the completion of games.

GOALS, ASSISTS AND PROJECTED BONUS

INJURY WATCH

FPL winner Simon March's team reveal: £5.0m 'keeper, Barnes in and Watkins out? 1

Ollie Watkins (£7.5m) missed out on Aston Villa’s defeat at Watford with the bruised knee he picked up in the Villans’ final pre-season match.

Emmanuel Dennis (£5.0m), who bagged a double-digit haul against Dean Smith’s troops, seemed to limp off midway through the second half at Vicarage Road.

Graham Potter said that Joel Veltman (£4.5m) was absent today because he had come into close contact with a person who had tested positive for Covid-19. Percy Tau and Aaron Connolly (£5.5m) were out for “personal reasons”.

Coronavirus was also the cause of Ryan Bertrand‘s (£5.0m) absence from Leicester City’s win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, while James Maddison (£7.0m) will be assessed for a knock picked up in that game.

“Ryan [Bertrand], it was unfortunate – he had a lateral flow test which showed up positive. I just need to get more information from the guys tomorrow.” – Brendan Rodgers

The previously yellow flagged N’Golo Kante (£5.0m) and budget defender Andrew Omobamidele (£4.0m) failed to recover from injury and illness respectively for Saturday’s games, meanwhile.

FPL OWNERSHIP AND CAPTAINCY

Among the most-owned FPL assets, Fernandes and Salah were by some distance the biggest winners from Saturday’s games.

They were the only players with an effective ownership of greater than 10% who banked double-digit hauls.

It wasn’t a day for differential captains: the two aforementioned premium midfielders scored as many points combined than the rest of the above players managed in total.

STAT WATCH

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.0m) marked his return from injury with a goal in Everton’s win over Southampton and tops the expected goal involvement (xGI) table in Gameweek 1 so far, with his tally of five shots in the box not trumped by any other player, either.

Paul Pogba (£7.5m) bagged four assists from five chances created in Manchester United’s 5-1 win over Leeds United.

Budget forward Dennis’s shot count of five was bolstered by three chances created in an impressive showing at Vicarage Road.

Of course I will watch the game tomorrow first but started thinking about doing Barnes to one of the cheaper Spurs mids - maybe Lucas, as a punt for the upcoming weeks - thoughts?

I’m not saying it is urgent, just trying to find some nice differential for the coming weeks. Next three fixtures are potentially in favour of Spurs and Barnes wasn’t actually good today anyway.

Are price rises/falls the same for a first week as any other?
i.e. is there any merit in doing transfers today.
    Can't remember what happens gwk1.

The principle is the same every week but it's usually a bit slower since there are no previous transfers in or out yet. There shouldn't be any price changes before Monday (although you never know) but Pogba (and maybe Fernandes) will probably rise on price yearly next week.

You can bench White for a few GWs. Brentford & Toney looked good last night while Palace looked very poor today.

Hold, this GWs points are done, chase next weeks not this weeks...

Rolling the transfer seems like a best way to go since you can always bench White so no need to ship him out yet. Toney looked promising so I'm going to follow him for a couple of weeks at least.

Unless your players won't be playing next GW you should be rolling your transfer.

I never understand why people make transfers after GW1 otherwise. Aside from showing the least possible amount of patience with the players they backed in their starting team, they're passing up the opportunity to instead use that ft when they have literally double the amount of games to base their decisions on.

That’s where BPS is flawed - Ings scores a pointless 97th minute penalty consolidation in a losing match and gets a BAP.

Jota scores the winning goal for Liverpool and not a single BAP anywhere in sight.

Well whenever Jota was mentioned on here it was met with scorn most of the time. Greenwood was better but still quite a lot of people threw shade on his selection. So going on that sentiment, choosing those was fairly lucky given the mindset of the majority.

Watching Mane play, it’s crazy how Arsenal fans slate Aubameyang after he carried us for 3 years. Both players are way off form but yet one of them is called a mercenary, etc. Outside of FPL, you hardly hear about Mane’s form.

          • 14 Years

But that's it. He's supposed to be the main goalscorer so when results don't go their way Aubameyang is an easy scapegoat. Pool goals shared between Mane and Salah with Firmino contributing a few. Can Dijk injury deflected too much from Mane not contributing more. Aubameyang losing form after signing contract last season, for whatever reason, was a bad look with many people at home because of COVID. No-one cares that he carried Arsenal for 3 years when he's getting paid to improve them now. Both are getting well paid to deal with the pressure. Hopefully they pay no heed to social media opinion.

            • 10 Years

Yeah I think he’s an easy scapegoat tbh. And all I meant was that we’ve seen his class since he signed for Arsenal but he just doesn’t play for a very good team. I don’t personally believe that him signing the new contract has meant he’s stopped trying. He’s getting older and the system and lack of creativity is a huge factor imo.

Just to clear up the grammar misunderstanding, my comment is that “I’m loving all the Arsenal fans complaining about white” meaning those fans who are complying, not that “I’m loving that all the Arsenal fans are complaining about White”

Said on here the other day, wish we’d signed Zaha instead of Pepe. Would have been better for us and for both players careers.

Again, only because what we currently have is tragically bad. I’d prefer if we signed Maddison and there’s some rumours we’re very interested but why would he wanna join?

There are better players around Europe at a lesser price, Arsenal just need to find them. Their level of recruitment should be similar to Leicester or Villa, not £50m+ players like Chelsea, United & City.

Didn't catch the early game today - I know it's probably hard to say considering the scoreline but did Raphina look at all threatening? If not threatening, then at least sharp? Of course no need to get rid if not, but would be helpful to know

Leeds will be fine but I honestly thought Raphinha was dreadful, gave the ball away a ridiculous amount of times and was poor in every department. I won't get rid of course, I expect a response next week from Leeds at home and probably especially Raphinha but I've never seen him play so poorly.

Honestly, he was wasteful and should have been subbed off. Too many errant long passes, and could have tracked Pogba back harder for one of United's goals. His pace works against him at times and he needs a bit more composure.

That being said, I'm happy to keep all season as I think he's great value in an attacking side.

What stats provider do FFS use for the xG figures?

0.72 xGI for Bruno seems a mile off

    1. grumpyman
      • 9 Years

The better the goals, the lower the xG.

His goals came from two one-on-ones and a shot with the keeper off his line, they were definitely higher quality chances than the figure suggests.

Bruno's goals were not easy. 1st was amazing touch, then good finish.

2nd was not from an easy position in reference to position and distance from goal line.

3rd again, great finish. Not an easy take.

they were easier than the figure suggests though, two of them were essentially 1-on-1 and the other was with the keeper off his line. It's clear FFS are still using the raw xG based on shot location and not factoring in the keeper position, defender position, type of shot etc.

I didn't see the game but sounded like Villa looked very disjointed today. Have the money itb for Ings to Lukaku who'll likely debut against an Arsenal team that were dreadful last night and couldn't handle anything physical so I can't say I'm not thinking of doing it (was going to be GW4 otherwise)

I have a bit of dilemma for goalkeeper next gameweek, that I did not think I would have

    Schmeichel v West Ham (a)

    OR

    Sanchez v Watford (h)

    --
Before today I was assuming that West Ham will likely score against Leicester and that Brighton would get the clean sheet v Watford.

But after today Brighton do not seem as defensively sound as I thought and Watford look like they are flying.
Plus Schmeichel got three saves today v Wolves all in the end of the game.
