Picking last week’s Fantasy Bundesliga squad taught me several things.

Firstly, don’t go against your intuition (Manuel Riemann (5.4m), I hope you can forgive me).

Secondly, don’t go without Robert Lewandowski (17.3m).

I’ll try and follow both these rules ahead of an exciting Bundesliga Matchday 2.

SIGN UP TO FANTASY BUNDESLIGA AND PICK A TEAM HERE

GOALKEEPERS

Manuel Riemann (£5.4m), Philipp Pentke (1.0m)

A penalty save, six additional saves and 17 points is more than any of Riemann’s owners could have hoped for. The Bochum stopper saved his side’s blushes in Matchday 1 and may well be given the same task for Mainz’ visit to the Ruhrstadion this weekend. Bochum’s first home Bundesliga game in 11 years and their first competitive home match with fans for 18 months – the stage is set for Riemann to impress once again.

Philipp Pentke costs just 1.0m and is simply a budget filler.

DEFENDERS

Alphonso Davies (13.3m), Borna Sosa (11.4m), Moussa Niakhate (7.3m), Amos Pieper (6.1m), Josip Stanisic (3.2m)

Alphonso Davies (13.3m) was arguably Bayern Munich’s brightest spark in their 1-1 draw with Borussia Mönchengladbach, managing 12 points despite no goal contributions or a clean sheet. He grabbed eight points for duels, looked threatening throughout and is one of the first names on my teamsheet ahead of their tie against Köln.

Josip Stanisic (3.2m) also had a great game against Gladbach, picking up one less point than Davies for 10.1m less. He’ll keep his place for this game and looks to be a great budget pick.

Borna Sosa (11.4m) was imperious from left wing-back in Stuttgart’s 5-1 win over Greuther Fürth, managing three assists from seven key passes. His tie against RB Leipzig isn’t an easy one, but he’ll be involved in everything Stuttgart do and, as Jesse Marsch’s side proved against Mainz, they’re not quite firing on all cylinders just yet.

Moussa Niakhate (7.3m) faces a Bochum side who failed to offer anything in front of goal against Wolfsburg in Matchday 1. Niakhate, on the other hand, grabbed a goal against Leipzig and will be at the heart of Mainz’s efforts again this weekend. He’s on free-kicks and also takes penalties when Daniel Brosinski (5.9m) isn’t on the field.

Amos Pieper (6.1m) is in the squad by virtue of being Arminia Bielefeld’s premier threat from set-pieces. Fürth looked dire defending dead-ball situations against Stuttgart and with Masaya Okugawa (6.0m) and Alessandro Schöpf (6.1m) now providing much better service, Pieper could rack up the attacking points.

MIDFIELDERS

Joshua Kimmich (15.3m), Filip Kostic (14.0m), Lars Stindl (13.2m), Masaya Okugawa (6.0m), Lee Jae-sung (6.0m)

Joshua Kimmich (15.3m) provided a great set-piece assist for Lewandowski’s goal and was lively throughout Bayern’s game. He managed five key passes, was then bright in the Super Cup and I expect a strong showing in this week’s fixture against Köln.

Both Filip Kostic (14.0m) and Eintracht Frankfurt were poor against Borussia Dortmund, but they couldn’t really ask for a better game than Augsburg this week. Fresh from a 4-0 battering by Hoffenheim, Kostic has the perfect opportunity to rediscover last season’s form.

Lars Stindl (13.2m) was unlucky to finish the Bayern game with just nine points, looking lively throughout as he emphasised his role at the heart of this Gladbach attack. Bayer Leverkusen will be kinder opponents for the veteran German as he looks to recreate last season’s form, which saw him average above one goal contribution per-game.

Former Salzburg man Okugawa was Bielefeld’s brightest spark in their drab goalless draw against Freiburg last time out. Their game against a Fürth side fresh from an opening day defeat is incredibly kind and Okugawa also has a share of set-pieces.

Summer signing Lee Jae-sung (6.0m) started up top for Mainz against Leipzig and will do the same against Bochum after Jean-Paul Boetius (6.9m) wasn’t included in the squad. The former Kiel winger looked dangerous in that game and also scored against this weekends opponents last season.

FORWARDS

Robert Lewandowski (17.3m), Erling Haaland (16.4m), Andrej Kramaric (14.4m)

Lewandowski looked incredibly dangerous against Gladbach. He was unlucky to just get the one goal, and then followed it up with two against Dortmund in the Super Cup. Sign him, he’s Robert Lewandowski.

Erling Haaland (16.4m) had the highest expected goal (xG) total on Matchday 1 and grabbed two goals and three assists, following on from his Pokal hat-trick.

As a result, only one forward spot is really up for debate this week.

I’ve put Hoffenheim’s Andrej Kramaric (14.4m) in that spot. He managed three assists in Matchday 1 from three big chances created, while Union Berlin have just played in Europe and Kramaric may have the chance to take advantage of some tired legs.

Who makes way to get Lukaku in? Have TAA, Bruno and Mo. Feels like TAA should be the sacrificial lamb but just can’t bring myself to pull the trigger on him.

Do you think TAA and one of the strikers at 7.5 or 8 will score less points than Lukaku and a cheap defender though?

At that point I suppose you'd need to factor in Fernandes/Salah as normal captain options.

No rush for me. Think I'll probably end up waiting til the turn in fixtures allow him to bed in. Depending on form, Bruno probably the one to make way.

Too much of a stretch owning three captaincy choices this early in the season, and he's hardly likely to outscore Mo & Bruno by a huge margin. I'd sooner have a decent squad.

Been on the fence about transfering out Gundo all week. Signs look good for him to play, especially with KdB out.

fplstats has him going down in price overnight - so still unsure if I should hold. Tempted to get Benrahma, Sarr or Greenwood in - with Ben my team would be far too template tho

    Thoughts?

If he point scores on Sunday, his price will rise anyway, in theory negating the price drop. A goal and assist and you could be looking £0.2m increase

My Gameweek 2 Best Punts & Differentials

After some sweet success with an Alonso pick in GW 1, along with its myopia induced early transfer issues 😆 I thought I’d pick out a few punts in GW 2 for fun. Used to do these in community articles casually back in 2015ish, although sadly community articles don’t really seem to be that popular anymore. Anyway, have some spare time so thought I’d just have a cheeky go this season!

    LEON BAILEY

Bailey came on with just 30 minutes to go, and really impressed off the bench against Watford. He looked good on the wing whipping in cross after cross and it was only after he came on that Villa scored their 2 consolation goals - Bailey assisting McGinn’s goal with a great cross into the box. In the short period he was on as a sub he managed 1 Key Pass and 2 shots on goal. With 1 of those shots coming inside the box, the joint highest number of SiB of all Aston Villa players including a 90 minute Ings and that was his penalty…

With an impressive substitute performance, Villa fans are hoping for him to be ready to start against a very leaky Newcastle backline this weekend. Coming to the PL with a great goalscoring and assists record of 15 goals and 12 assists in all comps last season, if he’s on the pitch from the get-go I think he could be a great differential pick at 2.7% ownership and BRE up next after. Although, perhaps, one to watch for the more cautious FPL player 🙂

Here's some special stats for other members to help cement the case! (@Buendia/Ings owners too):

    https://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/12342/

    PAUL POGBA

Despite all the Pogba naysayers, I honestly think Pogba could impress this season and particularly, in the coming gameweeks. He had an absolutely stellar performance in game week 1 with a staggering 4 assists, and nobody’s saying he’s going to recreate that every week. But we all do know how creative he can be, and with Bruno virtually playing as a 2nd striker right now, Pogba has taken up the role of chief creator in that United team playing off the left – 5 Key Passes in GW 1. Aside from creativity, Pogba is more than capable of chipping in with goals, with his highest goalscoring tally in the 18/19 season coming up to 13 goals! Not saying he’ll hit that again this season, but we all know he’s capable, and he was unlucky not to come away with a goal against Leeds after a bad miss in in a 1-on-1 during the first half.

Fun fact - Pogba had just as many shots in the box as the far more popular Mason Greenwood in GW 1, whilst Greenwood’s single Key pass pales in comparison to Pogba’s 5. Maybe the choice for the potential 3rd United spot is not as clear cut as most people think, and we all know Pogba is more than capable of going on a big run. I think he’ll retain that spot on the left for the foreseeable future, but am confident of returns wherever he plays in the current form he’s in. Fixtures of Southampton next along with Wolves, Newcastle, West Ham and Villa make him a tasty proposition in my eyes, and he’d be a pretty sweet inclusion for GW2 against a depleted Saints backline.

    DOMINIC CALVERT LEWIN

DCL was a huge part of the template pre-season that suddenly disappeared with his minor toe injury. Fortunately, managers who decided to risk starting doubts and keep him in their sides were rewarded with a nice goal from the Toffees’ striker in GW 1. The striker had the highest shots in the box of all forwards in the gameweek and looks to be a real danger once again this season after his 16 goals in 20/21. Everton’s style of play under Rafa seems to be focused on playing direct balls and crosses into the box for their danger men, and this seems perfectly suited to DCL’s specific goalscoring talents and aerial prowess for the 6”1 striker. With Leeds conceding 5 goals last gameweek, he looks to have a pretty decent fixture along with Brighton, Burnley, Villa and Norwich as his next 4, and could prove to be a nice differential with less than half of the ownership of more popular FWD picks like Antonio and Ings. (A third of Ings’ ownership % even!)

Cheeky members’ table with Everton to note for DCL:

I think it's a tight 50/50, tbh. Alonso got match fitness and a goal performance on his side despite Chilwell being the no.1 choice generally. I'm starting him anyway!

Week to early for Bailey imo as the word from Villa is that Smith won’t be starting him. I’m looking to the Brentford game, by which time Watkins should be back. Think the chances of Bailey starting that game is high

Brentford's probably a bit too late to bring him in tho with the horrid fixtures coming up. If anybody wanted him, I'd think probs best to hop for a start or risk a sub against a horrendous NEW backline and then a start against BRE!

"Despite his impressive cameo from off the bench, Smith has admitted that the Jamaican is probably just short of fitness to start against Newcastle on Saturday.

"I'm not sure he's got enough minutes in at the moment (to start)," said the manager. "He pulled out of the Gold Cup; Jamaica got to the quarter-finals but he pulled out with an injury so he came to us pretty much under-cooked so it's a slowly-slowly approach with him."

As for Pogba he was under 10% ownership last I checked....it seems he's rocketed to 14% now 😆 Still not too bad under 15% though! Less than even Grealish still.

Yeap I've got DCL in my team alrdy and it looks good! Cheers

Away fixtures against a Leeds side that conceded 5 and the next against Brighton who are horrible at defending set pieces! 2 decent fixtures for big man DCL in my books, especially with BUR, avl, and NOR up after.

          Anytime goalscorer odds this week:
          Ings 2.3
          DCL 2.6

So both look good, but Ings home vs Newcastle who conceded 4 last time is probably slightly better option.

        3) Ings has two plum home fixtures. So now is not the time to sell him. Ings to DCL after gw3 is what everyone is planning to do atm.

I only have Jota at the moment, but was planning on selling him next week...Was playing with the idea of going Jota to Gundogan this week because I am worried about Jota's playing time, then Mahrez to Son (C) & Wilson to ASM next week

I don't know how popular this opinion is, but I think Gundogan is a mainstay of Pep's team. He's like the glue that makes the midfield tick and is excellent at arriving in the box to finish chances. 13 goals from 28 starts last season.

With Fernandinho a year older, Pep not fully trusting Rodri, and Bernardo Silva seemingly on the way out, then I can't think of a threat to his position. It's conceivable when KdB is fit, he'll play Grealish and KdB as a pair of 8's with Rodri ro Fernandinho anchoring, but at this stage of the season that isn't a concern, yet.

Soucek is so seriously over-looked because of Benrhama. Soucek is a great pick regardless of Ben, I havent even looked at stats but I bet he performed better then Ben last week, and he certainly will in the long run.
Only people who have him are those who started with him, when Antonio invetibaly gets injured I think I will get Soucek to go with Ben if Ben keeps his form

    1. Old and Slow
      • 6 Years

His stats were very good. West Ham has too many good options.... But once they start really hitting out of league play, it will be interesting to see how they do....

    2. Bartowski
      • 15 Years
      4 years, 7 months ago

I think it was more because in pre season games Benrhama was taking up a higher position than Antonio while Soucek is very much further back. Obvs he will still score well but Benrhama was clearly more pivotal when they attack.

      1. have you seen cyan

True, just his aerial threat is a constant nuisance, he is always sniffing around for goals, even nearly took Cresswells last week. By a fine margin he doesnt have two goals (probably was offside but still close).

          • 15 Years

Benrahma should be 0.5 more than Soucek based on his position so it's not really fair to him.

Does anyone know how Fernandes Home v Away points compare. Is it weighted or broadly similar?

Like a lot, Fernandes v Salah for captain.

Just seen Fabinho is likley to be out, which is swaying me away from my Salah choice, but if Fernandes more of a home hauler, then I may stick

He came on at half time against West Ham when we had fans in the stadium and ripped us to shreds. I want to say we were winning 1 nil at half time and comfortable. Then Bruno happened and we lost 3:1.

        He came off bench obviously.

Just seen on sky sports he is likely to be missing due to a family bereavement, and if that means flying home..... he could be out next game too I suspect.

Not that I own him, but do feel it affects our attack when he doesn't play midfield

If only one could purchase access to such statistics; perhaps through the form of a membership? It could allow us to compare home and away form over the last few years even. I think I’ve just come up with a great business idea - I’m glad no one does that sort of thing already!

massive uncertainty around quality and functioning of villa attack without grealish and watkins. poor attacking stats and performance against watford, extremely lucky to score last game. if you check any major statistical indicator, there are options with much higher expected points.

I don't know the Newcastle starting 11 as well as an engaged FPL manager should but wouldn't Schar and Lascelles be their first choice centre backs. They both missed last week's game but are not flagged. Will they start?

Barnes for Torres? Plan on getting kane in when he has moved lol so torres won't be for long but he could bag a couple against Norwich

Will he start? Surely that’s up in the air. Jesus could feature at centre forward.

Ha! No, genuinely! If anyone does know how an administrator can remove someone from a league I’d appreciate to know how. I’ve struggled to find how - only how to leave a league myself.

Does the new approach from Wolves not have a bearing, though?

It’s not like Son has played Wolves every season over a ten year period with different coaches and has a psychological issue facing the Old Gold?

That’s most likely true, I’m not just more minded to feel it was Nuno’s deep defence that denied Son the room he needs to exploit with his pace.

It seems more likely that was the reason than something about Wolverhampton Wanderers as a club.

Salah: 1+4 in seven games, starting five of those and subbed in in two. Not terrible I'd say.

Statistically speaking..... You just never get enough of a sample size for a player vs a specific team to really count it seems. I can draw any line through one point.... And practically any curve through a few points...

He's only just come and we don't know how is he gonna play. It's perfect to watch him over the course of few next GW's and then bring him in on a WC in GW7.

Yea there isnt much there, just too early to know if Tanganga is nailed. Another option would be Lowton but he doesnt have great fixtures, him or Ayling imo. But im probably forgetting about someone, someone else probably got a better suggestion

Tough choices, none of those Tottenham players are guaranteed starters and Ayling plays for a terrible defence. Webster would be the pick of those but even he is underwhelming.
