The Gameweeks are coming in thick and fast and more often than not we forget to sit back and think macro.

Chelsea’s performance on Sunday was incredibly encouraging and with most Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers having no Blues assets, a few might be thinking of a Wildcard during the first international break which follows Gameweek 3.

So, I thought it might be a good time to look at the merits of a Gameweek 4 versus a Gameweek 7 Wildcard.

The idea of this article is to help you think about the factors involved, that is all. Whether you Wildcard or not obviously depends on the state of your team and I leave that decision to you.

GAMEWEEK 4 WILDCARD

Also, before I finish up, Fantasy Football Scout has been nominated along with our podcast ‘The FPL Wire’ for the Football Content Awards (Best Podcast – Fantasy Football).

Smith Rowe to Raphina for -4?

Price drop on ESR would price me out, also have Tsimikas to get rid of next week so thinking better to take the -4 now?

    Sanchez
TAA - Shaw - Ayling (Amartey, Tsim)
Salah - Greenwood - Grealish - ESR (Brownhill)
    Antonio - DCL - Lukaku

Is it me, or has the number of Moaning Minnies complaining about the game being too easy on this site increased significantly? It's a bit of fun and many "FPL experts" have messed it up. Taking advice from them isn't guaranteed to help you achieve a high rank.

The best FPL players don't complain because they know they're completing with the elite for the number 1 spot and don't concern themselves with the masses.

There will be different WC strategies. WC4, WC7 and later WC (so called MU WC). People will have to make decisions about premiums / heavy hitters worth keeping etc. Managing these transitions isn't going to be easy.

I think there is a ht about this matter. Casuals copying Andy would have been fun, but he has made it impossible now.

guess it's mainly because mini-leagues that were previous easy to win have got harder, which isn't a bad thing - but I do think people copying high-profile players is a problem and that's only possible because those people are getting paid to tell people who they are picking. Most fun things get ruined by people trying to make money from it, so no big deal really

High profile players sometimes bomb. I suspect a majority of those copying them will soon get bored and either play their own game or pack it in. What's so good about Andy's team? Haven't seen it myself.

I wasn't talking about Andy - yeah that is always possible, but when they don't bomb it's like they have thousands of teams themselves and that's not ideal

When things are rather predictable, template does well and it's boring. The game is then about 2-3 differential players kind of thing. Can't wait the likes of Kane, KDB, Lukaku to shake it up.

If you're wildcarding on GW3, that means your research beforehand wasn't great, what's the point in being competitive if you're not going do the right research beforehand?

Especially if you're on this website, the template established here was clear as day weeks before the season started.

If you're not serious, (not you, I mean generally) you might as well take hits and save the WC for a better period coming at GW7

Don’t entirely agree. Last year I tried to go without Salah at the beginning and had Pepe, Havertz, Werner, Doherty and messed up my team.

Wildcarded GW2 and brought in Martinez, Grealish, DCL, Fernandes who were complete differentials at the beginning and all went on to score very well There’s no right or wrong time to wildcard, it’s dependent on your team and if you see an avenue to gain.

        2. The Bad Seed
          • 8 Years

No. Wildcarding early does not at all mean poor research. I don't get that correlation at all.

I based my team on a GW 3-4 WC, the research was good.

Also, you don't "research" injuries or covid rules that were still not out there yet.

In fact, all seasons (without exception) in which i wildcarded early, yielded better finishes.

        3. @persecuted_by_mods
          4 years, 10 months ago

It doesn't matter what it means, the only thing that matters is getting more points with a wildcard and how many of them you can get compared with your old team

          Why who how is irrelevant

A lot of people who finished with very high ranks last year WC'd around this time. I wouldn't say it's too early per se; what I would say is GW3 is followed by the closing of the transfer window and a potentially chaotic international break.

A fair point was made re. covid and injuries. So I can accept that, other than that I stand by what I said. Gameweek 2 has just ended. It's been two weeks. Using your most powerful card this early on is too early.

By this point, with two transfers you would have 17 players to pick from, if you're contemplating an early wildcard you'd surely even be considering 2 hits worth. That's 19 players.

People WC right now would be cutting Salah/Bruno for Lukaku when the two former players have decent fixtures. You'd be considering Antonio and Benny who can both fit in if you downgrade current players. Everyone has a 8mil striker and a 7mil midfielder.

WC right now and you've still got to play an International Break with unknown circumstances along with being stuck with teams with thin squads with Europe coming up.

Catching price rises? The only two players which will give you overall bigger value is Pogba and Tsimikas who would have needed to be bought at base value and sold now.

I don't buy it, way too early.

I dont normally get too concerned about team value but so many of my players have either already dropped in value or are about to. Ive already lost value in Gundogan and Sierralta and now Veltman and Barnes are close to drops with Toney not too far behind.

I like to patient with players but you get financially punished by all the knee jerkers!

Kneejerking is the phrase I would use. Ditching players because they haven't scored for 2 games and chasing points. Some people seem to expect players to deliver returns every week.

Early season is a time to build team value which conversely also means not losing team value. This is a big factor why people make transfers not solely down to knee-jerking

          • 9 Years

In fairness 2 of the players mentioned above are or were flagged, they are always vulnerable. You are unfortunate they were ill/injured but the decision of people to get rid is not a kneejerk, its entirely sensible. Barnes is being pressured by Benrahma's emergence. As for Sierralta, I have no idea who he is. Picking such a player at season start was always a massive risk in terms of losing value.

I wanted a Watford defender as they had some impressive defensive stats from last season and have a good set of opening fixtures. I had no idea who the likely starters were so trusted the FFS predicted line ups who had Sierralta starting.

I dunno, £4.5m on a Watford defender when there were Brighton defenders, Ayling and White who are much more nailed on, playing for better teams, and are better players in their own right for the same price? I think you've tried to be a bit clever there rather than playing the percentages. At least its a lesson learned 🙂

Nope. No lesson learned. I already had both Sanchez and a Brighton defender (Veltman) and Ayling. White would not have been in my first 11 for either of the first 3 games so felt pointless having him.

Saiss and Kilman are playing either side currently.
Boly is currently injured and most likely to come back in for Kilman, however Kilman has been playing so well.
Mosquera is also a new addition who's looked good in pre-season.

Preferred line-up at the back is:
      Semedo - Boly - Coady - Saiss - Marcal

I think the fact there will be 4 really good premiums and we cant have them all, a GW4 wildcard with 2 weeks time to build your team value is pretty viable, as we are likely able to afford 3 premiums with a balanced squad earlier than other managers.

Also the team I´d get in GW7 wouldnt be too far off a GW4 Wc team and I think by GW7 you can get to a fairly similar team to those wildcarding in 7 with using the free transfers, and with likely having more team value...so in the end it comes down to whether Lukaku can keep up with a Bruno over GW4-6...
I am currently looking at Bruno +Lukaku in GW4 and then move Bruno to Salah in GW5 potentially ...

Interesting. I had just assumed Bruno to Lukaku in GW7, but I reckon Lukaku could match Bruno in 4,5,6. Makes me think it might be worth bringing Lukaku in sooner. Also be good for TV as Lukaku could rise 0.5m by GW7 while unlikely Bruno goes up much.

Tsimi + Bruno + Wilson to James +Greenwood+ Lukaku. Seems good next week, unfortunately I have exact funds now so unlikely to happen

(Gw4 Salah has Leeds away, don't think that's a bad fixture)

      1. ja194
        • 5 Years
        4 years, 10 months ago

yes true Salah vs Leeds or Bruno vs Newcastle could be close, I think you can just go for salah 4,5 & 6 and not bank a transfer in 5

also why I want to Wc early is to maybe get 3 playing Liverpool for 5,6 so shifting Tsimi to a Jota without using transfers to do that...I actually think Jota+Trent long term might convince me to go without Salah when the fixtures are good&bad now & then...so maybe even Lukaku +Kane from gw8 onwards if he goes to City

but other than that a Gw4 wc compared to 7 is really just 2/3 positions different...like Lukaku and Jota instead of Wilson and bruno for ex and already some good long term Leeds/chelsea/maybe arsenal wolves assets...and I think the possible Team value made by going early is worth it...
2 weeks time to just get random players in some positions that go up 0,2 possibly starting from next Saturday...Im very tempted...also could attack gw3 with 2 ft s now... like a salah to Son move and reguilon aswell maybe...we´ll see

For me the Salah GW5 fixture is the problem. I look at it is: My non-WC team could keep up until GW7, then in GW7 I have fewer tough calls to make. I'll be down maybe 0.3-0.5 on Lukaku, but apart from that there's no bandwagon which is going to run away from me.

    Sanchez Gunn
    TAA Shaw Livramento White* Tsimikas*
    Salah Bruno Mahrez Benny Gilmour
    Antonio Ings Toney
    2FT 0ITB

What would you do with this lot? Toney, Mahrez and the defence the main issues atm

Chelsea x3 from GW7-GW13 looks inevitable, no?

      Yup

      Rudiger/James
      Mount
      Lukaku

Will be in almost every team

Yup - I have Lukaku and James and will try and add Chilwell by GW7

Really considering the wildcard. Been hampered with the bench of, Veltman, White and Perica. Could move into Kane/Lukaku well before the trend.

Anyone making move for Calvert Lewin today itself? (Price rise coming tonight)

Usually I like to wait till Friday but feel like I should be attacking Team Value more with no midweek games.

Too much Digne in my team i feel - it has been like this for years...Thinking Digne to Duffy and save the money and two free transfers for gw4. Other suggestions for this team?

    Sánchez
    Shaw, Alonso, Digne
    Son, Salah, Fernandes, Mbeumo
    Ings, Antonio, Toney

    Steele, Tsimikas, Gilmour, Amartey
2 free transfers, 0.5 million in the bank

Alonso to Duffy I like more tbh

Yeah Alonso got big comp on lb with Chilwell, and they also have Liverpool, Spurs and City 3/4 next fixtures

Thnks both! I could change Alonso instead - but I like having him in my team even with the fixtures.

    Does this plan seem sensible?

This week - Tsimikas to Livramento
Next week - Barnes to Sarr or another cheap midfielder and Ings to DCL

Happy to leave White for his good fixtures

    Sanchez
    TAA Ayling Shaw
    Fernandes Salah Barnes Benrahma Greenwood
    Ings Antonio

    Steele Tsimikas White Perica

Do these look like sensible moves?
    Gilmour and Toney to
    Benrahma and Dennis

Gives me 0.2itb to do Ings to DCL next week.

    Sanchez Foster
    TAA Shaw White Ayling Livramento
    Salah Bruno Jota Raphinha Gilmour
    Ings Antonio Toney

    Cheers!

looks good to switch formations. Not sure if I would prefer the 3rd fwd as a dead spot and bank the money to use elsewhere

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. I'm fairly happy with the funds in my defence. So, it could go to upgrading Jota or somehow to Lukaku.
        Thanks
