We round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Saturday’s Gameweek 29 fixtures in our Scout Notes summary.

INJURIES AND BANS

Mohamed Salah‘s (£13.3m) run-out against Brighton was cut short by injury after 64 minutes but it might not be the end of his Double Gameweek 29.

Jurgen Klopp downplayed the severity of the issue after full-time, although that positive prognosis was based on the player’s own kneejerk assessment rather than that of the Liverpool medical team.

“We will see. He thinks it’s not serious but you can see when Mo is sitting down, something is not 100% right. I think it was the situation before when he hit the ball & got blocked, I think the foot got slightly overstretched.” – Jurgen Klopp on Mohamed Salah, in a post-match interview

“He got blocked before the penalty already. Overstretched his foot slightly. He then felt it a little bit higher on the knee. He is not concerned but not sure what it means exactly. Mo is not often injured, I hope it stays like this. He thinks it will be fine but he felt something and you could see he couldn’t walk properly. So we need further assessment for sure.” – Jurgen Klopp on Mohamed Salah, in his post-match press conference

There was some big team news from Old Trafford, too, as Bruno Fernandes (£11.6m) missed the Tottenham Hotspur game after picking up an illness.

David de Gea (£5.2m) was also set to sit out the evening kick-off after returning a positive Covid test but that was subsequently revealed to be of the ‘false’ nature.

“Bruno is ill, unfortunately. He couldn’t train yesterday and is therefore not available for the game. Hopefully, he will be back for Tuesday but, today, he is out.

“David had, to start with, a positive Covid test but, in the end, it turned out to be a false test. We did another test after that and it was negative so that is why he can play.” – Ralf Rangnick

FPL TALKING POINTS

TONEY AND ERIKSEN’S GAMEWEEK 30 AUDITION
The Salah injury latest 5

Pop quiz: who is joint-second with Harry Kane (£12.4m) among FPL forwards for goals scored this season? Jamie Vardy (£10.3m), perhaps? Michail Antonio (£7.5m)? Maybe Emmanuel Dennis (£6.1m)? You’re all wrong: it’s Ivan Toney (£6.5m), who scored his 10th and 11th top-flight goals of the season in Brentford’s 2-0 win over Burnley.

Seven of those strikes have come in his last four starts, with a 44-point blitz in those games helping him to reach his ‘century’ in FPL.

Yes, three of his seven recent goals have come from the penalty spot. But as we reported last week, Toney has started to look a bit more of a threat elsewhere too: his total of five shots from inside the six-yard box from Gameweeks 22-29 can’t be bettered by any other Premier League player:

Above: Players sorted by shots in the six-yard box from Gameweek 22 onwards

Above: Ivan Toney’s xG shotmaps from Gameweeks 1-21 (left) and Gameweeks 22-29 (right). There is a noticeably higher concentration of close-range shots in the latter.

Thomas Frank’s recent switch to a more attacking 4-3-3 looks to be benefitting Toney, with the striker now looking less isolated up top – the caveat being that he hadn’t had a single shot before his 84th-minute opener on Saturday.

The creativity of Christian Eriksen (£5.5m) from midfield can surely only benefit the forward, too, and it was the Dane who assisted Toney’s first goal with a sublime cross and provided the pass that led to the forward being fouled for his injury-time spot-kick.

“I feel like with a player like Christian Eriksen you have to stay focused at all times. I don’t think I had a shot before I scored today. I can’t thank him enough for being in the squad and helping us.

“I set a target. I’m not there yet but hopefully I can hit it before the end of the season.” – Ivan Toney

Eriksen has created a modest three chances in his 218 minutes of pitch-time at Brentford but with his set-piece expertise and Leicester’s proclivity to concede from free-kicks and corners, he’s an intriguing Gameweek 30 differential.

Toney, incidentally, is now top for transfers in ahead of Friday’s next FPL deadline.

DIAZ’S MAN-OF-THE-MATCH DISPLAY

Catching the eye yet again on Saturday was Luis Diaz (£8.0m), who was voted man of the match by the BT Sport team after his goalscoring display at the Amex.

The young winger has now started five of Liverpool’s last six league matches and has two goals in that time, a decent enough start to his FPL career.

Above: Liverpool’s front three sorted by shots in the box since Luiz Diaz’s debut

Matching Mane for goal attempts in a similar amount of game-time, he nevertheless trails his two fellow Liverpool attackers for big chances, shots in the box and expected goal involvement (xGI) since making his debut.

Most of the plaudits have concentrated on his running power and off-the-ball graft so far and he’s yet to produce the Diogo Jota-esque (£8.3m) underlying numbers that jump off the page.

Still, there were some promising signs of his points potential on Saturday, with two big chances falling his way (one converted, one spurned) and another gilt-edged opportunity carved out by Diaz that Salah wasted.

Klopp indeed said after full-time that there’s more to come from the Colombian wide-man on the goals front.

“It’s not so easy to bring in a player in the winter without any kind of pre-season but with Luis, it was so interesting because the way he played at Porto is exactly the way we wanted him to play here, so he didn’t have to change really. Still has to adapt in moments, especially defensively, but he has speed and he can carry the ball pretty quick and his dribbling is not bad. I don’t think we saw already his full range of shooting skills. I saw when we scouted him a couple of really nice ones, so there is a lot of space for improvement. But, yes, he is a good player.” – Jurgen Klopp

BURNLEY/BRIGHTON: ATTACKS TO TARGET FOR CLEAN SHEETS

Burnley and Brighton both succumbed to defeats to nil on Saturday despite having periods of attacking pressure in their respective games.

It’s merely a continuation of a season-long profligate trend for both clubs, who languish in the bottom three for goals scored:

Burnley’s 3-0 win at the Amex last month hoodwinked many of us into a Wout Weghorst (£6.5m) captaincy in Double Gameweek 27 but that result was a real anomaly: discounting that victory on the south coast, Sean Dyche’s side have scored just five goals in their last 14 league matches.

The Clarets have another three as-yet-unannounced Double Gameweeks to come, so that’s a stat worth bearing in mind when DGW-itis infects us again after the March international break.

WLWLWLWLLWLWLWL
The Salah injury latest as in-form Toney tops FPL Gameweek 30 transfers in 4

Not a Welsh hamlet but rather Tottenham Hotspur’s form in all competitions in 2022. They’ve yet to string together back-to-back victories this calendar year; electric one week and disappointing the next, they’re a bit of a nightmare to predict from an FPL perspective.

Kane and Dejan Kulusevski (£6.2m) at least salvaged returns from Saturday’s defeat to Manchester United – slightly fortuitous ones, perhaps, as the Swede’s hopeful cross was needlessly handled by Alex Telles (£5.0m) to present Kane with the spot-kick opportunity he superbly converted.

Kane and Son Heung-min (£10.9m) produced unremarkable performances at Old Trafford, similar to the ones at Burnley and Middlesbrough, but as their goal and assist tallies under Antonio Conte will attest (12 apiece in 17 and 15 appearances respectively), we know that a haul probably isn’t too far away in the coming games.

Kulusevski, meanwhile, was arguably the pick of the Lilywhites’ front three and bagged his sixth attacking return in five starts; further fuel to some FPL managers’ argument that he might be able to ‘cover’ Son well enough, with a saving of £4.7m to spend elsewhere.

Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.3m) soared to the top of the FPL forwards’ points table with a hat-trick against the north Londoners: five of his 15 attacking returns this season have come against Spurs. The fact that he’s at the summit of the strikers’ list for both goals scored and points, after all the disappointment he has given his owners, is the biggest indictment yet of 2021/22’s forward pool.

Anyone thinking about riding the tide this GW and may be using the first FH in 31? These are some of the fixtures you could target that week:

    Liverpool vs Watford
    Burnely vs City
    Chelsea vs Brentford
    United vs Leicester
    Wham vs Everton
    Spurs vs Newcastle
    Palace vs Arsenal

Yeah, good move that. Used my WC in 24, so couldn't plan for this. I'm in a dilemma if I should use one this GW or just ride it out and use in next GW.

WC GW 27 and well set with 2FHs and BB left until after GW 31. maby getting one of Maddison, Barnes, Bowen or Mount to replace Raphina if he continues to blank

Yeah, I do. In GW31, bar injury & ban, I should have players from 3 games of Liverpool, Spurs, and Arsenal.

It’d be good to have players from City, Chelsea, or West Ham too. I probably try it with 2 FT to shift fund on Coutinho & Digne.

Coutinho to Havertz here. Keeping Digne vs Wolves, then he becomes James/T.Silva in GW32, I hope

Spurs assets would likely blank or be restricted to one return vs Newcastle. They're not a juicy fixture

Agree with the rest. Could be a surprising goalfest at Palace, with both defences stuttering

But, then again... I'll have many of these with FTs, except City. Staying away from City (Sterling and Cancelo) until GW34

1 FT & 0.1 ITB. Apart of Broja > Hwang, I don’t see any interesting move to improve my team for GW30. And I think Hwang is also uncertain to start every game. Good chance to save FT.

    Ramsdale
    Doherty, Amartey, Digne
    Son, Saka, Odegaard, Coutinho
    Kane, Gelhardt, Broja
Bench : Sanchez + Salah, TAA, Robbo

I’m looking forwards to GW31 and see that I have no idea yet who I want to sell / buy. Early thoughts are
    - Chelsea def / attack
    - West Ham attack [?]

There will be a chance for additional DGW in GW31, right? Probably best to wait.

Save FT is definitely an option for you, unless you want a Leicester mid for the run in. I'm looking to bring James & Havertz back in 31. May have one further midfield spot open & considering Bowen/Sancho, or maybe just keep Martinelli a bit longer. Doubles in 31/2 would only be Burnley/Everton which I'm ignoring

    2. Ze_Austin
      • 7 Years
      3 years, 8 months ago

Nice team. I've ignored Kane to spread the funds. Prefer saving FT to getting Hwang, yes

The GW31 DGW is likely Everton and Burnley. I'm quite sure I'll ignore it

Set on Coutinho to Havertz here. It seems Lukaku is done (didn't get Havertz in GW28 because I thought Lukaku still had a chance), and those fixtures are lovely

Keeping my Chelsea def spot until James is back fit, unless he's announced out for a long time. Nobody else comes close, and the sideways move for a hit would always feel wrong

Ze - sounds like you might have missed it, but we were getting reports here that James' injury timeframe has been reduced to 5-14 days. Havent seen it confirmed from official source yet though

Similar Team and thoughts. However have you considered moving early for a WHAM attacker to replace Broja? Possibly using Robbo to Dawson? Is a -4 but actually also then gives a bench player too! ???

Have 11 playing GW 30 and well set up for GW 31. Will be hard finding 2 very tempting GWs to spend my 2 FHs, agree that 36 is better points potential for building up BB than FH.

    Probably doing Dennis -> Toney.
Or would you FH this team?
    If not, worth any hits?

(1FT, 2.1 itb, WC, BB and 1FH left)

    Ramsdale
    Doherty/Dawson
    Saka/Kulusevski/Raphinha/Coutinho
    Laca/Antonio

Ronaldo finally found his scoring boots, 29 game weeks into the season - that's one reason.

Collective brain fart at Spurs is the other, never seen so many misplaced passes and players falling on their own in PL game before.

No, if he is rested thats because of fatigue, etc. Performance wise, Spurs were decent and as Conte did say, it was a good game with two quality teams. Conte knows what he gets with Doherty, he is not stupid. And like with Moses, who was not perfect defender you get a goal and assist machine from rwb.

Kulu is a good pick, but I'm not sure he should be compared with Son

Son plays differently. He's a very direct threat, and that threat has actually gone up (not down) in this recent attacking surge from Spurs. The main thing that has changed is his finishing: clinical to scarily poor, like what happened to Mané at some point. This change doesn't feel permanent though

Not sure many FPL players can cover a clinical Son with good fixtures (Son's good fixtures are the teams that will attack Spurs, no matter their level; his bad fixtures are low blocks like Newcastle and Burnley). But when taken as individual picks, Kulu is excellently underpriced and allows you spend that cash in good ways, yes

From what i have seen, Kulu looks like a Fpl player, the way he picks up pockets in between lines, his left foot is very accurate. Yeh, and right ly, not compare with son but with similar price bracket, and in some extent, a possible better combination with Kane than SON due to lack of strikers but a lot of midfielders.

Agree with Ze, he's no Son, but he's great value. I have Kane & Son atm too but it was just for 29-30, too expensive to hold long-term.

          Kane (Broja, Gelhardt)

It looks like it will be a series of home wins today, with the possible exception of Everton and West Ham, but they’d be hoping to win too.

5 home wins and a draw is my guess.

Sounds about right to me. Maybe not that many goals until Ars/Lei. Hoping for some sneaky Gelhardt pts - bumped him up to 1st bench, likely to fill in for Cancelo

As long as Leeds play well.

And we'll see which Watford turn up.

I think West Ham beat Villa but that's tough to predict and Everton v Wolves could easily be a draw or go either way.

Everton are bookie favourites for a home win.

Everton (4), Burnley & Leicester (3) have the most fixtures yet to be rearranged.

So after Blank GW30 is out the way who are you targeting from those teams with your FT’s?

I'm assuming anyone on on fh30 will end up with almost identical teams?

    1. The Mentaculus

Actually, I feel like there might be a bit more variation than in GW27 when everyone (myself included) had virtually the same team. Maybe because these fixtures, although fewer, are a bit tougher to call so there's more scope to follow your own read of them rather than piling on obviously one-sided games like City v Everton?

Yeah, I have 2 FHs left so defo using one in 30. I dont think teams will be too similar. Kane will be only common striker. Other options are Ings, Laca, Toney, Daka, Jiminez, even Antonio against that awful spurs defence.

    Which option:

    A) Weg to Gelhardt in 30. Davies to James(if fit) in 31.
    B) Weg to Hwang in 30. Tierney to James(if fit) in 31. Davies to White in 32.
    C) Weg to Hwang in 30. Davies ro Alonso/ Silva in 31.

    Thanks!

I’m really not sold on him and Eriksen doesn’t feel like a good use of a midfield slot given it’s effectively unlimited funds on a FH (is it even possible to go over budget with these fixtures?!)

But as third striker or first bench, it’s him or Jimenez. Will see how the second Wolves games goes and make a decision

And tbf, already punished enough, if VAR not broken Salah would have been 40 minutes on the pitch with 10 Brighton players. And he should have scored one more. Tc cappers deserve that i think.

That is a good point. Playing Dewsbury-Hall in a more advanced position did worry me a bit. If Rodgers feels he needs another presser in the AM strata it could be bad news for Maddison. Still prefer him to Barnes if both play but will be monitoring tactics

If on FH then Daka. BR prefers Daka at CF when I look at who started last time when Vardy was injured.

Not sure using a FT to bring Daka in though. Vardy due back in GW31 after IB

    Sa
    Doherty Digne
    Odegaard Son Saka Maddison Coutinho
    Kane (c)

    Good enough as a -4…

    Or Dennis to Hwang -8??

No chips or hits & set for GW30, GTG?

    Still got FH & BB.

Going forward thinking Sa to Schmeichel/Pickford for 31 onwards.

Not falling for the Burnley trap again.

    Ramsdale,
    Doch, Digne, Kilman
    Saka, Kulu, Raphinha, Ramsey,
    Toney, Kane, Laca

    Sa,, Thiago, Trent, Salah,
