We round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Wolverhampton Wanderers v Leeds United in our latest Scout Notes.

All stats taken from this article are from our Premium Members Area.

WOLVES UNDERWHELM

Jimenez sent off as Wolves collapse in FPL Blank Gameweek 30 opener

In an incident-packed Blank Gameweek 30 opener, Raul Jimenez (£7.6m) was sent off as Wolves threw away a two-goal lead at Molineux.

The Mexicans red card after two cautions was undoubtedly the turning point, with the hosts in complete control during a first-half which saw goals from Jonny (£4.5m) and Francisco Trincao (£5.6m).

The latter, benefitting from an injury to Ruben Neves (£5.3m), appeared as a first-half substitute and made a real impact bagging a goal and assist. Remarkably, it was the on-loan Barcelona midfielders first goal of the campaign, having previously gone 21 Premier League matches without finding the net.

“In a couple of days we’ll know. He didn’t feel comfortable on his knee. We need to wait and see.” – Bruno Lage on Ruben Neves

As for Jimenez, as a result of his red card – his second of the season, he will now miss Gameweeks 31 and 32 through suspension. With a possible blank to follow subject to this weekend’s FA Cup results, heavy sales are now expected.

Max Kilman (£4.6m), meanwhile, surprisingly dropped to the bench on Friday, with Willy Boly (£4.9m) returning and featuring alongside Conor Coady (£4.9m) and Romain Saiss (£5.1m) at the back.

However, having shipping three goals in a match for the first time under Bruno Lage, the English centre-back will fancy his chances of a swift return to the starting XI following the international break.

BACK-TO-BACK WINS FOR LEEDS

After ending a run of six straight defeats by beating Norwich City last weekend, it’s now successive wins for Jesse Marsch, with his team seven points clear of the relegation zone with eight games to play.

From 2-0 down to 3-2 up, it was an excellent comeback from the visitors, although serious questions remain about their defence after another frantic display strewn with individual errors.

Notably, they have failed to keep a clean sheet in 16 league matches, the longest current sequence in the top-flight, with their 67 goals conceded at least four more than any other Premier League side.

“Yeah the first half wasn’t what we wanted and we knew Wolves are a good team and they were able to pull us apart more than we hoped and the second goal before half-time was a killer.

It’s a group that has big hearts, quality young men and I’m very thankful to be here with them and to be in a fight with them because even though I’ve only been here a short while I believe in them.

When we were a man up you hope we can push on and then we can push for the second goal and that’s what happened.

We are still learning and adjusting to the football I want us to play but, in the meantime, I know we can draw on the mentality and the identity of the club. I think we still have a lot of work to do and I am just focused on controlling our mentality and work ethic and if we control that then I think we have the quality to do well.” – Jesse Marsch

RAPHINHA/BAMFORD LATEST

Owners of Raphinha (£6.5m) were dealt a huge blow prior to kick-off, as the Brazilian has tested positive for Covid-19 and missed out for Leeds.

The 18.0% owned midfielder had started the last five matches in a row, and was showing signs of his best form in last Sunday’s 2-1 win over Norwich.

“He’s Covid positive right now. We didn’t find out until after our press conference yesterday. It’s obviously unfortunate for him with us right now and with the national team but hopefully, he won’t stay positive for long.” – Jesse Marsch

As a result, Raphinha could now miss Brazil’s forthcoming internationals, which Marsch touched on after the game:

“He has to stay put, you’re not allowed to travel with the restrictions. We’ll have to evaluate it. He’s establishing himself with the Brazilian national team which is amazing.” – Jesse Marsch

Elsewhere, injuries continue to hit hard, as the Whites had to make four enforced changes on Friday.

Patrick Bamford (£7.7m) went off injured in the first-half after he went down shortly after stretching to control a ball over the top. And things then went from bad to worse as they lost Diego Llorente (£4.5m) with a back problem, Mateusz Klich (£5.2m) with a head injury and goalkeeper Illan Meslier (£4.8m) following the collision that resulted in Jimenez’s red card.

“Bamford is not too bad. Planatar fasciitis just been sensitive over the last couple of weeks. Very disappointed and the reaction can look bad, but I don’t think it is. Just disappointed to come off.

Llorente back spasm bothering him. Probably stay here during the break. Klich had concussion, but seems to be okay. Illan (Meslier) hip contusion, don’t think it’s too bad.” – Jesse Marsch on injuries

However, in better news, Kalvin Phillips (£4.7m) and Liam Cooper (£4.4m) returned to the bench after more than three months out.

“Kalvin (Phillips) was never gonna play. He’s not ready yet to be in the match. Liam (Cooper) could have played 10-15 mins fit. And then Joffy (Gelhardt) didn’t train all week. The plan was for him play against Man U with the Under 23s. We put him through a little training session this morning. But when Patrick (Bamford) went off there’s no way Joffy could’ve gone the whole game. We ran out of subs in the 50th minute.” – Jesse Marsch

Wolverhampton Wanderers XI: Sa, Boly, Coady, Saiss, Jonny (Silva 90+3), Neves (Trincao 25), Moutinho, Ait-Nouri, Dendoncker (Chiquinho 90+3), Podence (Hwang 78), Jimenez

Leeds United XI: Meslier (Klaesson 55), Ayling, Llorente (Koch 40), Struijk, Dallas, Klich (Cresswell 45+9), Forshaw, James, Rodrigo, Harrison, Bamford (Greenwood 23)

What a crazy game, thought Saiss would get subbed at halftime, next thing it was 2-2 then Ayling scores the winner with a great celebration.

I've only seen the highlights but the proverbial game of 2 halves then Wolves looking to equalise in injury time.

      Entertainment value.

Massive points for Leeds, that perhaps they may not have got if Raphinha had played?

      Bizarrely.

More nonsensical refereeing favoring the keeper (who could easily have been given a straight red) over the attacker. After Sanchez got away with assault on Diaz this doesn’t shock me any more. Total bonkers game.

The keeper beat the attacker to the ball, no way the keeper deserves even a foul.

Its a 50/50 challenge ; Meslier not exactly in control. It was unfortunate, booking Jiminez was insane.

turned out to be correct decision.
Let say as a player, which option would you choose? off the pitch by red card and cant play for few games or get off the pitch by injury for months?

It’s not about the injury. Even if Meslier didn’t get injured that’s a yellow

        That was a clear yellow…

Jimmy got to the ball second, and laid his tackle on the player not on the ball. Anywhere on the pitch that’s a yellow you can’t just kick an opponent just because you’re late to a 50/50

More of a pre-cautionary pre-planning mindset. For example, should everyone remain fit, do we think Ziyech is still a good shout? I will probably need City, but who and at what cost?

  8. Holmes

Little bit modified from 1st draft but this draft does looks more premium.

    Ramsdale
    Trent, Robertson, Cancelo, Doherty
    Salah, Havertz, Mount, Kulu, Martinelli
    Ronaldo

Bench : Cucho, S. Greenwood, Williams

Have sacrificed Mahrez for Robertson. I guess Ronaldo(LEI, eve) can outscore Kane(NEW, avl), so taking punt on him for 2 weeks. IDeally wanted a WHM mid but 0.5 short, so Martinelli is being used as an enabler. Overall, looks like a differential yet safe team for the run. With FH33 in mind, one issue I can see is hits in GW34 as I would like to change Mount and Ronaldo to some other players but -4 will hopefully do the job. Cucho can be used in 32 and 35 vs LEE and BUR.

Then one of the GKs/Adams/Livramento/Smith Rowe are not really required, you can downgrade them to get some cash and upgrade Keane/Smith Rowe.

      My thoughts;

You've said 0.5 short of WHU midfield, does this include Lanzini, if not, does Mount to Ziyech free up 0.2M to then do Martinelli to Lanzini?

I personally think you're missing out on Chelsea defence and I would take Gelhardt over Greenwood, but understand funds seem to be a bit tight. Also would go with Amartey over Williams.

      1. Holmes
        • 12 Years
        3 years, 8 months ago

Only interested in Benrahma/Fornals tbh. Ziyech, I'm not sure if he is even nailed?

Tried to add Chelsea defenders but not possible as 4th defender and I dont think they provide anything extra over TRC plus occasional rotation to deal with.

        1. Zenith UK
          • 9 Years
          3 years, 8 months ago

Benrahma lost his place (WH fan). Lanzini been playing very well and tends to be kept whether it's in the front four or part of a three man midfield/double pivot. I understand why you want these though.

Ziyech, touch and go, same with any of the Chelsea attackers really. When GW28 came round and people were screaming for Havertz I never understood it. He had started three of his last ten with no attacking returns in the league whereas Ziyech had started six of his last ten with three goals and four assists. Granted Havertz scored in the Club WC Final (penalty) and UCL game against Lille (which was assisted by Ziyech)

I get what you mean with TRC. I actually had Trent, Robbo, Cancelo, James and Rudi in GW28. Lost Cancelo to fund Kane effectively.

Will go with that till the end of the season. Robertson has definitely looked more attacking. Plan is to play this starting 31 and make changes in the mid/ strikers based on fixtures:

        Pope

I’m finding FPL hard this season. The variance is extreme. I had Jiminez captain last night, Ait Nouri and Coady. -2 points from the players. Meanwhile, my ML rival had Jonny who scored 7 points. He only had him due to lack of funds and (bluntly) a lack of planning. I also have Ramsdale, Saka, Thomas and Tierney, all of whom are now rumoured to be injured. I’ve carefully worked towards having 11 players for this GW and it seems that was pointless. Does anybody else feel like the planning element of this game has been demolished these last couple of seasons, and rarely rewarded?

Ouch. There does seem to have been a lot of big swings and if you have been on the wrong side of those, it must feel rubbish.
Hopefully things go back to normal next season....

I found lack of funds did well in this season.

Cash vs Digne (when Cash 5.0 and Digne 5.1)
      Kulu vs Son
      Marti vs Saka

      Still some usual cases anyway

      James vs T.Silva / Rudiger
      Adams vs Broja

Son as it stands os the 3rd highest scoring midfielder this season, yes lately dipped in form a bit which paired with returns from shiny new toy - Kulusevski, that's all.

Saka is way better than Martinelli, not only nailed and focal to Gunners offensive play but also in great form and scored 50 points more than Brazilian.

It happens actually I don't know how 😛 but this season I also haven't got so much joy. Called 50/50s wrong, bench points galore. WC prep for 30 out of the door with Digne, Raph and then last night Jimenez. If any saving grace, got at plan with 8 GWs to go with 2FHs to get into 100K 🙁 But as you said planning too long term is rather useless (for me) ...

I don't think I've got a 50/50 right yet this year, resulting in dropping from 49k OR on New Year's Day to 259k now. New Year is when I normally start to rise up the OR not plummet like a stone.

Looking at my options for GW31. Which one do you feel best to go on GW31/32

    A: James + Mount + Coutinho
    B: James + Kulu + Coutinho
    C: James + Barnes + Coutinho
    D: T.Silva + Havertz + Coutinho
    E: T.Silva + Son + Gordon*

    Notes
    - Gordon have DGW31

I think I also can re-phrase and ask these questions.

Q1. Which option is better : Mount / Kulu / Barnes?

Q2. Is it worth to go T.Silva (not James) and have Haverts instead of the options in Q1?

Q3: Is it worth keeping Son and go with E compared to other options?

I'd say Kulu on form. All three are good though and I'd suggest consider getting 2 of them in.

I've gone Havertz so yes. T Silva will cover from a defence perspective but won't get explosive hauls so try get the right players in who'll move rank.

I've dropped Son this week, I think leaving him out opens up value across the pitch. He's funded Havertz and Laca last week as well as Jonny for me this week.

          • 15 Years

Keeping my faith on Son since GW27 and seen Kulu outscored him have been painful. Just hope Son to get his haul in this BGW30 and show the value to his price.

Btw, selling Son to release funds and strengthen several players in squad look like good strategy. If James is fit, I think it's time for me to do the same.

          Cheers.

A of those. Not thrilled with Coutinho over Havertz though... is a -4 for James, Havertz & Mount too much?

        • 15 Years

0.5m needed. The only way I could fund Havertz + Mount is to have T.Silva instead of James.

I actually like the look of Silva + Havertz + Mount. They are not firing many goals but BRE / sou on next two GWs look interesting.

UCL games, in the same period, probably make the line-up uncertain though.
