From the start of 2022/23, Premier League clubs will be allowed to make five substitutions per match.

We’re looking at how this rule will affect Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers next season and have already assessed what happened when five changes were previously – and briefly – allowed in 2019/20.

Now, we take a more focused look at the players from last season’s top five teams who look the likeliest to avoid a withdrawal and those who are most prone to being substituted.

In particular, we are hoping to find out more about defensive assets and their chances of making it to the magic 60-minute mark to bank clean sheet points.

For this article, we’ll look at how Pep Guardiola, Jurgen Klopp, Antonio Conte, Thomas Tuchel and Mikel Arteta handled their substitutions in 2020/21.

READ MOREWhich FPL assets played the most minutes in 2021/22?

MANCHESTER CITY

  • As mentioned in our last piece, Pep Guardiola made the fewest substitutions per match (2.1) of any Premier League manager in 2021/22.
  • Kevin De Bruyne was the joint-most-substituted City player of last season, being withdrawn in nine of his 25 starts. Seven of those nine substitutions came after 70 minutes, with only two before 60 minutes. In seven of the nine times in which he was hooked, he had already delivered an attacking return.
  • City’s three first-choice orthodox full-backs Joao Cancelo, Kyle Walker and Oleksandr Zinchenko made 66 starts between them but were only substituted off on a combined two occasions, with Walker’s half-time withdrawal in Gameweek 3 the only full-back change prior to 60 minutes.
  • Changes at centre-half were more commonplace. Aymeric Laporte, the stopper who Guardiola shaped his central defensive partnerships around, was withdrawn on five occasions in energy preservation exercises. Not one of the five withdrawals came before the 60-minute mark but there were two close-run things in Gameweeks 34 and 36.
  • 46.4% of Riyad Mahrez‘s run-outs came off the bench, with only 10 of his 28 appearances lasting the course. Mahrez had one of the best points-per-start averages (6.9) in FPL last season but it was feast or famine with the Algerian, who registered nine one-pointers as a substitute.

Son is one of the best players in the league, his minutes aren't going to drop that much. If anything it should help him avoid injuries from being flogged (Kane also).

Thanks Skonto, an important article. As well as looking back, we have to look forward. The pattern evolving as far as I can see is that clubs like Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs are adding key players to their squad, thus we can expect a lot of subbing and rotating of high priced-assets, but at the same time City are shedding theirs. I wonder if we'll see less Peptation and more Contation, Artation and Tuchtation. Will this make Foden a more viable asset than a similarly-priced Kulusevski, Mount or Saka?

      Valuable article. Bookmark worthy.

I'm surprised at how much Arteta rotated with such a thin squad and no Europe.

Mount was the least rotated Chelsea asset, so I'd much rather him than Foden.

Thanks, Andy, agree with you. As mentioned towards the end of the article, there's that condensed autumn schedule for Spurs/City/Liverpool/Chelsea between GW4-15 (also the three Europa League clubs but they'll probably mostly play the second string) which will only further boost the prospect of all five subs being taken up.

A little bit more so than in the PL and certaintly more minute-management in general, as they had five subs at their disposal in that competition last season. Liverpool also had the luxury of qualifying two games early last season and rotated thereafter.

    3. TheTinman

It's interesting. There's a few ways you can look at it so different managers will use the extra subs differently over the season.

But overall we should see a lower mean for the gametime of players at big teams, might not effect the smaller teams as much who have less options.

We will have to reassess the effect on player minutes as patterns emerge.

But for the moment it's probably better to play it safe.

It's an interesting thought. I've already been thinking Grealish will have a good season especially with some of his direct competition leaving / possibly moving position. I'm actually now beginning to consider risking going for him early on if he looks like he's first choice at LW.

Mahrez and Foden seem way ahead in the pecking order.

Also Grealish keeps getting pictured trashed on nights out, don't think Pep will appreciate that.

Oh god. What an idiot. I don't have twitter so didn't realise this was going on. I kind of had it in my head he would realise this is his big chance with Sterling gone and a push for the World Cup, but clearly not.

I don't see the issue in someone enjoying themselves in the off-season. If he's not doing it mid-season and turns up in shape and focused on football when the time for it comes around then what's the issue? Players were worse than this before social media and that was during the middle of the season. Foden supposedly wants to play on the right too and I'm never sure on Mahrez, last season people thought he was surely due to be first choice and then Pep played Torres at RW first followed by moving Jesus from CF to RW.

I don't have a problem with it, just thought Pep might. Didn't he drop him last time he was filmed getting sloshed?

But yeah, if they sell Sterling you'd think they'd buy a replacement for the left hand side to compete with Grealish anyway.

I think it was something a bit bigger, that was mid-season and I think he and Foden both went out and came back in a bad state to training, and as well I think it was during the time of vigorous covid testing so players were supposed to be sticking within bubbles. I'm not sure if Alvarez is possibly going to rotate across the front 3, I believe he played at RW a handful of times so maybe he'd be another opinion but I think I read Sam Lee saying that despite the departures City aren't targeting anyone other than their initial targets (Haaland, Phillips and Cucurella).

Thanks Neale, fantastic article. Great that you included context underneath. There are so many mitigating factors surrounding minutes; like injuries, fixture congestion, lack of competition etc... Just have been a nightmare to process it all.

For Cancelo to get so many minutes from Pep during the most congested season in history is astounding. With such unusually high xMins for a City player, it makes him super valuable.

Thanks, Giggs, glad you liked it 🙂 Cancelo really exceeded expectations on the minutes front last season, although Walker did spend quite a bit of time on the sidelines and Mendy was of course out of the equation early on. You'd think Cucurella would eat into Cancelo's minutes a bit in 2022/23 if he arrives.

Pep has been quoted saying Cancelo has unbelievable powers of recovery before too.

"Of course he is playing really well [Cancelo]. Consistent. His physicality, he can recover really well and play three times a week. But still I have the feeling he can do better. Hopefully he is open to accept that and we can move forward." Nov 2021

With Kyle Walker now 32 and picking up more injures, can you see Cancelo moving to RB next season?

Would help get more crosses into Haaland, and also explain the interest in Cucurella.

    1. Holmes

If they do sign Cucurella, then Cancelo should get more gametime at RB.

But wasnt there some theory/quotes which suggested that Pep avoids playing Mahrez and Cancelo on same side?

      1. Piggs Boson

        That does sound familiar.

Perhaps Foden is moving to the RW. Been hearing he wants to play there this season. Had a really good game there for England this year, putting in beautiful crosses from deep, Beckham esque.

Sam Lee, from The Athletic is reliable:
        https://www.sportbible.com/city-xtra/phil-foden-manchester-city-pep-guardiola-position-premier-league-20220620

Foden is left footed, so not the natural thing to be putting in crosses from the right. City haven't naturally been a crossing from deep kind of team. Despite Haaland signing, I can't see them fundamentally changing that.

          1. Piggs Boson
            • 14 Years

I don't think he'll crossing from deep for City as much, although KDB does that all the time, it's more that a reliable source says he wants to play there. To quote the article:

"As per a report by Sam Lee of the Athletic, sources close to Phil Foden have suggested that he would like to operate on the right-hand side of a front three in the 2022/23 season."

It's where he had his best games as a youth player too. Seems likely to happen given Jesus' departure...

it would make sense, as it gives more opportunity to cut in on his strong foot more than anything.

With the arrival of Cucurella, it must mean some shorter minutes for Cancelo. With Stones not in the best of form, I think Laporte looks the most minutey defender, and being cheaper than Cancelo, he's likely to be my go-to.

This looks/sounds spot on. And with 5 subs, there might be a more consistent starting 11 from Pep? Then just early hook offs.
          Maybe something like:

Is the general consensus that he's a good 'real life signing' for Spurs?
I'm not sure he offers that much more in backup than Moura/Bergjiwn (noted Bergwijn is pushing for the exit door).
              But at £50-60m, I don't think I would say it's a great signing, no.
Not a 'bad' signing per say.

              Just - meh.

And no, he won't be troubling my fantasy football squad... aside from stripping mins from the SKK.

I'd say that's a mark of success - especially when there's only realistically two CL spots up for grabs.

I assume Doherty is first choice with Spence backup. But remember when Doh went missing for half a season? Could happen any time. I mean, fair enough if you own him you sell him, but both FPL player and club manager might struggle to judge when under par evolves into a disastrous slump. I'll be looking to defenders who are not just nail on minutes-wise, but are reliable year in year out.

Their fixtures come good GW6. With Arsenal's turning nasty GW8 I'll be looking to jump on Newcastle assets in that period. Bruno could be same price or less than Odegaard, and the defenders could be priced the same. Trippier would probably be my first choice, but by then I'll have seen enough of them to make informed choices.

    3. Conners
      • 7 Years
      4 years, 1 month ago

If you're likely to want Newcastle players as early as gw6, I'd consider starting with them.

For a start you'll save the transfers, but more importantly you could find you're priced out of an easy move, especially if the likes of Wilson or Bruno G get a haul in the opening fixture against Forest.

No, of course not. But after many years, Spurs have a decent backup for him should he get injured. But BOT is right, if any of Kane, Son or Kulu get an injury that rules them out for a few GWs, Rich will suddenly be a major bandwagon.

We say this every year but it’s because we have a tendency to exaggerate how much new signing are going to play. Kane and Son are arguably the most effective partnership in PL history - they are still going to get the vast majority of minutes. Kulu maybe a different story. And bissouma doesn’t really change anything as Hojberg and Bentacur aren’t really fpl assets anyway.

Absolutely he’s a good shout - my current template has no space for a 5.5 so not looking at him.

That said when I did my fixture analysis Villa came out as solid but not spectacular. First three games as tasty but then West Ham, Arsenal, City and Leicester in a row aren’t great for defensive assets.

If we find a defender that’s consistently being subbed at 60-70 mins, say Lamptey/James/Jonny/Perisic, does that actually make them better picks? Is a 65min Lamptey better than a 90min Lamptey?

If you are very confident they reach 60 mins every time I’d say at best it’s neutral. Downsides:

      1. The players you mention - and most people it would be relevant for - are at least partially in your team for attacker returns, this is less time for those.

      2. Often the players that do 60-70 are more likely to get starts rotated and have 20-30 min camoes every few GWs.

I’d say the Lamptey train is very much on pause for now anyway. He’s playing time was all over the place last season and for all his exciting play is actual attacking returns to date aren’t that dreamy at all.

Question - do we think / know if fpl have some sort of idea of how much they want the total prices of all players in the game to be.

I ask because, for me very sadly, we look to be at most 12 months from Salah leaving fpl. When he does do all other medium priced / premiums have to get more expensive as suddenly you have a consistent 50% + owned super premium out of the game so everyone has more spare budget?

Mane is a bit different as ownership was typically lower.

think it's an interesting question - i bet there someone plotting graphs of the price distribution year-to-year.

it gets tricky though because there are expensive players that become less owned, so I wonder how much the distribution effects the "buying power" of the $100m budget.

They definitely price the popular picks (to varying degrees of success) in a way it makes it tough to have a balanced squad (if you want 2/3/4 premiums etc) and decisions have to be made.

They won't care too much about total of all players as that's fairly immaterial. However they definitely have to price players relatively to get a good distribution of prices. You could ask what the effect of Haaland is coming in as surely he'll be an additional high-ownership premium. But Lukaku is gone etc, as is Mane to a lesser extent.

Don't forget across the season it varies anyway - I finished last season with Son, KDB and Salah comfortably in my squad, with Cancelo, Dias, TAA and James at the back, and that wasn't uncommon. No way we'll be able to start next season with such luxury!

Putting together a disco team (playing with a back three):

    GK: Gloria Gaynor
    DEF: The Bee Gees
MID: Amii Stewart, Donna Summer (c), Boney M, CHIC
FWD: Diana Ross, KC&The Sunshine Band, Soft Cell

Bench is fodder. Boney M defensive mid, Soft Cell a new wave differential. Grateful thoughts before I finalise.

Too much Boney M, would bring in the Village People to leap off the bench when needed.

Notoriously he will replace one with the other at half time. Might only get a 45 from each.

Fair enough, but with the Pips beside her, I don’t see her conceding many…
