It was easy to miss due to the deluge of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) player price reveals but the summer pre-season friendlies got underway on Saturday.

Arsenal, Crystal Palace and Wolverhampton Wanderers were among the teams in action, all entertaining Football League clubs on their training grounds.

As ever, we’ll be documenting all the goals, assists and (where available) minutes played ahead of Gameweek 1 of the 2022/23 FPL season – and the dedicated Pre-Season tab is the place to find it.

This information might be of limited use at this early stage of course but it’s more and more meaningful the closer we get to the start of the new campaign. It is, for example, how John Lundstram came to attention as an ‘out of position’ defender three years ago. Said Benrahma’s pre-season minutes and form were also noteworthy last summer ahead of his early-season burst of form.

As for the action on Saturday, Arsenal thumped Ipswich at London Colney. A strong-ish XI swept into a 4-0 lead at the interval, with Eddie Nketiah (£7.0m) bagging a hat-trick and setting up Albert Sambi Lokonga’s tap-in. An advanced Lokonga, indeed, teed up Nketiah for two of his strikes.

The academy was brought out for the second half, with Folarin Balogun finding the net at the second attempt to round off the Gunners’ scoring.

Arsenal first-half XI: Leno, Bellerin, White, Mari, Cedric, Partey, Maitland-Niles, Sambi Lokonga, Pepe, Nketiah, Nelson

Arsenal second-half XI: Okonkwo, Walters, Kirk, Awe, Sousa, Smith, Oulad M’hand, Patino, Hutchinson, Balogun, Flores

Palace’s team selection mirrored that of Arsenal’s, with several first-teamers taking to the pitch in the first half but mostly youth team players brought on at the interval.

Jean-Philippe Mateta was assisted by Odsonne Edouard for the Eagles’ opener, with the visitors drawing level after a raft of substitutions at half-time.

Palace first-half XI: Guaita, Ward, Watson, Tomkins, Mitchell, Hughes, Eze, Schlupp, Rak-Sakyi, Mateta, Edouard

Palace second-half XI: Matthews, Clyne, Quick, Phillips, D. Boateng, Riedewald, McArthur, M. Boateng (Raymond 85), Plange, Benteke, Street

No footage or game-time detail has emerged from Wolves’ 4-1 win over Forest Green but the social media account for Bruno Lage’s side revealed that Pedro Neto (£5.5m), Chem Campbell, forgotten man Adama Traore and Bruno Jordao were on the scoresheet at Compton.

See a lot of Haaland but no love for KDB? Too expensive?

His price is a problem. He's like Mane last season - priced too close to Salah to be a sensible differential.
Premium city - most will go for Haaland. You don't go Haaland AND KDB.
Premium mid - you go Salah. If you want one of Haaland or Salah, your second choice is likely to be Son. Kev just falls through the cracks.

I don’t think we’ll get Spurs prices today I’m afraid.
    I think today we get:
Chelsea, West Ham, Newcastle, Southampton and Bournemouth
    (In that order)
    Then Monday will be:
Spurs, Leicester, Palace, Everton and Forest.

fine by me, i don't think i'll be getting any Spurs players anyway now, unless of course the value is there. I think Son is going to surprise people, 12.5, I'm thinking

I forgot that Kulu, in my draft, hasn't been priced yet. I'm assuming 8.0. Any higher will give me a headache.

I’ve wanted Kulusevski too but the signing of Richarlison worries me a bit from a rotation perspective.

        Agree.
I have really appreciated Rag’s pricing, but I can’t see how a Son who scored 60 pts more than KDB last season will come in as £0.5m cheaper than him.

I will prob have one of Son/Kulu.
Son’s threshold for me is probably £12.0m
Anymore and I don’t see the value in going him over Kulu (assuming an £8.0m price tag - which I think is about right)

Latest draft. Finding it difficult to pick a midfielder or striker in the 6.5m-9m bracket.

    Ederson
    Trent, Robertson, Trippier, Tomiyasu
    Salah, Saka, Maddison, Neto
    Kane, Johnson
    (Steel, Aït-Nouri, Elanga, Greenwood)

Chillwell at 6, gutted. Mendy, Mount and maybe havertz seem decent value (if they don’t sign a striker)

At 6m James would have to be the option over Chillwell?

Chillwell at coming in at 6 means I need Maddison to come in at 7.5 to be able to afford my draft now. At 6m I’d have to go for James too

        1. Brimble82
          • 7 Years

I think that Chilwell price is the first one I’ve felt mild ‘disappointment’ in.
Given his injury/lower score last season I’d assumed a lower price.

Tbh though, FPL Towers have administered a bit of ‘common sense’ - £5.5m for him would’ve been an absolute steal!

            • 8 Years
            4 years, 2 days ago

Arguably there is more competition for his spot assuming Alonso doesn’t leave, coupled with less points I was hoping for that .5 cheaper. But as you said it’s probably a fair price, I’m also disappointed

Okay, that's good. Easy to go without Chelsea - as it stands. Still much work to do: will they replace Lukaku? Get an alternative to Raphinha? Strengthen midfield? Which new centre backs will come?

Don’t think they’d price Kane below Haaland.
Haaland is still new and unproven.
Kane has season after season of PL G/A and FPL hauls.

At this rate Lloris will be 5 and I'm gonna be getting him

This is the most surprising prices I've ever seen, it's crazy. The whole set so far.

Outscored everyone (bar Salah) by +50pts - I’m not sure how £10m is even in the ballpark!

If he's less than 12m then everyone who doesn't have him is dumb

I like the new 5.5m goalkeeper cap. More people will go with premium goalkeepers now instead of the 4.5

Not with defenders from arsenal at 4.5 imo.

I feel like these prices are all a bit too low and there’s going to be a catch (bigger squad, or less budget)

Nah I think it’s widening the gaps to the premium forwards/mids on purpose to try to create more variety. I think it will work tbh. Choosing less premiums and spreading cash around the entire squad is more viable then it has ever been.

The danger being, you need captaincy picks still

Defenders have been underpriced for a few years now. Nothing new. They've changed the goalkeeper cap this year that's why Mendy is 5. I don't see any other surprises. United have been shite for 10 years now so those prices finally reflect that. Diaz the only underpriced one imo so far in mids and fwds for me.

With the prices so far I reckon there's no dedicated GK sub, just five subs.

I'm not expecting any changes - it just makes the game more accessible to newcomers.

Personally would like it to be a maximum of 2 players from any club instead of 3.

every competitively priced forward from a good team increases the appeal of going without Salah…

I'm quite enjoying that aspect so far. There will be a bit more diversification (from the pool of top teams). The bit I'm slightly confused about is now there are about 12 teams who you won't even think of picking a player from.

Also strikers look massively overpriced unless the scoring system is changing (which it won't imo).

Yeah, that’s the flip side of ‘diversification’

I don’t need to step outside the top-6! Or top-5 for that matter - do Utd even count anymore?

Can see a lot of triple LIV/MCI/ARS topped up with CHE/TOT

If Mount costs only £8m, Kulusevski has to be even cheaper. Nice!

8 million seems to be a theme for a lot of these players; Saka, Mount, Diaz, Foden, so probably Kulu and Bowen also

Yeah the pricing is really fun. I can see why the likes of Mark think it’s dangerous though. One or two standout budget options could lead to a rigid template with multiple premiums.
